[Bug 1755640] [NEW] Pitch-Bend Control Wrong On Java MIDI Interface

2018-03-13 Thread Aere Greenway
Public bug reported:

When using a Java MIDI interface to connect a MIDI keyboard to either
the Java Sound Synthesizer, or to an external MIDI synthesizer (via a
hardware MIDI interface), the pitch-bend MIDI message is two half-steps
(one note) low (out-of-tune).

It appears that the data1 (least-significant byte), and data2 (most-
significant byte) values are interpreted as a signed 14-bit number
(whose mid-point is 0), rather than an unsigned 14-bit number whose mid-
point is X'00', X'40' = X'0200', as specified in the MIDI spec.

This results in all further notes played being a whole-step too low, and
the pitch-bend values within the range of the MIDI keyboard not being a
smooth progression from low to high.

Here is information from the MIDI trace:

Input IDLE.
Input ACTIVE.
Forwarded MIDI = E0, 00, 40 (this message generated by the code to compensate
for being out-of-tune)

This is different from how it works on Oracle Java 8, where the value
for 'no pitch-bend' shows up as E0, 00, 40.

It is possible to send the proper pitch-bend values from a Java-
implemented MIDI transmitter, but received pitch-bend values (coming in
on an input MIDI interface) get transformed to an improper value.

This problem has probably been in-existence from the first release of
open Java. I tested on an old system having Open Java 7, and the
problem was there too.

Until I created 'wrapper code' for the Java Sound (Gervill) Synthesizer,
I had no way to test this functionality.

My expectation is that Open Java will handle pitch-bend messages the
same way as Oracle Java does.

I am using Lubuntu 17.10, but the problem also occurs on Lubuntu
16.04.4.

[Bug 1755640] Re: Pitch-Bend Control Wrong On Java MIDI Interface

2018-03-13 Thread Aere Greenway
The attached JAR-file has online help (click the Help button) to explain
how to use it. Unfortunately, Java cannot 'see' ALSA MIDI devices, so
you have to use a hardware MIDI interface (such as a USB MIDI keyboard).

The code to compensate for the out-of-tune pitch-bend makes things
worse, but you can see everything coming in from the MIDI keyboard
traced (printed on the terminal).

I can supply a Java Web Start version of jSynth, if you would prefer
that.

[Bug 1430578] Re: Drag'n'drop a file onto a zip file gives nonsense error message

2018-03-13 Thread Ads20000
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all
reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since
that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some
of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently
supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly
upload the updated logs by running only once:
apport-collect 1430578

and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

[Bug 1466926] Re: reload apache2 with mpm_event cause scoreboard is full

2018-03-13 Thread Haw Loeung
We ran into this with the main Ubuntu Archive servers
(archive.ubuntu.com). They were only configured to reload/graceful on
log rotation. Basically workers were held up and eventually all full and
not servicing requests.

We've now switched from MPM event to worker but would like this
backported so we can switch back to event.

[Bug 1754506] Re: AutoFS does not automatically umount SMB shares

2018-03-13 Thread Alexander Lochmann
As far as I know, just a few steps are necessary to reproduce this issue:
1. Setup a simple smb server on machine a, like the one I've attached to this
report.
2. Create a smb user on machine a: smbpasswd -a $username
3. Enable smb in auto.master on machine b (and set the timeout to something
small, e.g., 30 secs):
/media/smb/ program:/etc/auto.smb
4. Save the credentials on machine b: echo
"username=$username\npassword=$password" > /etc/creds/machineb
5. Try to access the home directory from machine b:
user@machineb:~$ ls -lh /media/smb/machineb/$username
6. The smb mount is still there after more than 30 seconds

[Bug 1700827] Re: [MIR] pcp package

2018-03-13 Thread Nathan Scott
Hi Eric, all,

| The only thing missing that I can think of right now are to release the
| upstream fixes for which I think has been merged upstream in 4.0.0 version

Just a heads up that the pcp-4.0.0 release happened a few weeks back, and
included all of Eric's fixes as well as several others related to Debian/
Ubuntu packaging for pcp (as per Matthias' list above the python deps and
binary-indep/binary-arch fixes are also included there).

cheers.

[Bug 1755600] Re: grub2 installing ubuntu failed

Was this a fresh install or via dist-upgrade?

This line in your Syslog got my attention: Mar 13 21:20:19 ubuntu
ubiquity: grub-install: error: cannot find EFI directory.

Can you confirm if you have an EFI directory in your disk partition?

[Bug 1755624] [NEW] With intel-microcode 3.20180312, kernel reports as broken spectre v2 microcode

2018-03-13 Thread Steve Beattie
Public bug reported:

With an intel-microcode package based off of
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27591/Linux-Processor-
Microcode-Data-File, when booting, the kernel 4.15.0-10.11-generic
reports the following in dmesg:

[0.00] microcode: microcode updated early to revision 0x84, date =
2018-01-21
[0.00] Intel Spectre v2 broken microcode detected; disabling
Speculation Control

And indeed, none of ibrs, ibpb, or stibp show up in /proc/cpuinfo. Other
testers of the updated microcode report seeing the same thing.

The processor this is being tested on is:

cpu family : 6
model : 142
model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz
stepping: 9
microcode : 0x84

The test for the microcode is in https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/bionic/tree/arch/x86/kernel/cpu/intel.c#n178
; specifically, it looks like bad_spectre_microcode(c) is returning
true.

It seems
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=d37fc6d360a404b208547ba112e7dabb6533c7fc
has not been pulled in yet (though it's staged as
3e442a86b70eea274d01569244584d91e2f287e7 in bionic/master-next and is in
4.15.0-12.13 in bionic-proposed), which addresses things for Kaby Lake
processors, but other processers may need to be verified for
correctness.

2018-03-13 Thread Michael Marley
I see the same issue on my Skylake desktop (sig=0x506e3). The microcode
updates at startup (microcode: microcode updated early to revision 0xc2,
date = 2017-11-16) but I still get "Intel Spectre v2 broken microcode
detected; disabling Speculation Control". I also tested it on Ivy
Bridge, Broadwell, and another Skylake system (0x406e3) and it works
properly on all those.

[Bug 1754888] Re: Menulibre: invalid desktop files detected!

2018-03-13 Thread Sean Davis
After reviewing the package for vim, it doesn't seem like there's a good
way to resolve this issue for the vim source package. So this leaves two
options.

1) Xubuntu provides vim instead of vim-tiny.
2) MenuLibre adds a way to ignore errors, and Xubuntu provides this override
for the base install.

It's still reasonable to leave this bug open since the provided .desktop
file is invalid.

[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2018-03-13 Thread Blake Riley
I experienced this issue twice in the last 24 hours on 16.04. Both
times, I waited over an hour after the computer froze before performing
a hard reset on the machine. (The expected time for the operation to
complete was under 10 minutes.) In my case, the computer goes directly
from working as expected to being completely unresponsive, freezing all
input (keyboard, mouse, power button) and output (screen, file
transfer).

The bug does not appear consistently, though. After restarting the
computer, performing the same file transfer worked without any issue.

Those tests were against an EC2 instance running Ubuntu 4.4.0-116.140-generic
4.4.98 per /proc/version_signature

Normally this would not be the biggest concern but we have tooling that
gathers instance info on a schedule, including sysctl output, thus
resulting in the kernel ring buffer being full of nothing but said
output in most cases and hindering live troubleshooting as a result.

[Bug 1755629] [NEW] ephemeral-disk-warning yields /mnt 0444 immutable on package update when /mnt is bind-mounted

2018-03-13 Thread Paul Meyer via ubuntu-bugs
Public bug reported:

Both /etc/init/ephemeral-disk-warning.conf and /usr/sbin/ephemeral-disk-
warning contain code to determine where the ephemeral disk is mounted,
write a warning file, and set that file read-only (0444) and immutable
(+i). In the case where the ephemeral drive is bind-mounted to several
places (e.g. using it as a docker backing storage, etc.) an execution of
one of these scripts will yield /mnt 0444 and immutable, usually
breaking whatever was using the storage space.

We had one customer who had a large number of yarn nodes go bad because
of this. Output from `journalctl -u ephemeral-disk-warning.service`:

Which was right after the walinuxagent package was updated to
2.2.21+really2.2.20-0ubuntu1~16.04.1
I was able to repro the problematic lines on my dev box, where I have two
directories bind-mounted to my home dir:

$ dev_resource=$(readlink -f /dev/disk/azure/resource-part1)
$ dev_resource_mp=$(awk '$1==R {print$2}' "R=${dev_resource}" /proc/mounts)
$ echo $dev_resource_mp
/mnt /home/paulmey/packer_work /home/paulmey/packer_cache
$ cat /proc/mounts |grep sdb1
/dev/sdb1 /mnt ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 0
/dev/sdb1 /home/paulmey/packer_work ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 0
/dev/sdb1 /home/paulmey/packer_cache ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 0

It looks like this script needs to be more specific in determining the
mountpoint, or maybe even make its own temporary mount point for the ephemeral
drive, since /proc/mount does not indicate which mounts are bind mounts (and
what the source directory for that bind mount was).
It looks like LP#1626318 is also an example of this bug.

[Bug 1746088] Re: [Ubuntu 16.04.4] Unable to analyze the vmcore generated by kdump on 4.13.0-26-generic kernel

2018-03-13 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
@breno re: point release meaning vs updates

Please note point releases refer to installation media only, which is a
consistent snapshot of cloud images, container images, server ISO, d-i,
etc. Built from xenial-updates & xenial-security pockets as published at
the time of the respin. xenial-updates/-security themselves are a moving
target.

It's impossible to ship something in "16.04.2" today, as there is no
package archive that refers to "16.04.2". One simply continuously ships
updates in xenial-updates.

Thus the point of point-releases installation media, is to have
installers available with a newer kernel which hopefully supports more
hardware, and newer packages making post-install security/updates
upgrades quicker & smaller, as one does not need to catch up 2 years+ of
updates, just a few weeks of updates.

This issue does not appear to impact the installation media /
installation success, therefore it is not critical to ship in
installation media as respun for a point release. Hence it is targetted
to ship simply as any other SRU in xenial-updates.

Once the solution to this bug is found that is.

[Bug 1755634] [NEW] tp-smapi 0.41-1 can't load by Kernel 4.4.0-116

2018-03-13 Thread stk76
Public bug reported:

I recognized the last days that tp-smapi 0.41-1 can't load by Kernel
4.4.0-116, while with all 4.4.0-xxx-Kernels before it gives no problems.
TLP (for example) says that tp-smapi can't load by kernel and is
"inactive".

I tried different tips from forums and compiled the actual tp-smapi 0.42
too - but all with the same effect: tp-smapi(-dkms) is able to install
und is compiled right, modules are found by "modinfo" but the modul is
not loading with Kernel during startup!

Tried to load it with terminal command but there is coming a warning
about an exec-format-error.

So if i install and compile tp-smapi with older 4.4.0-xxx-Kernels, there
is no error message and the tp-smapi-module is loaded and active.

tested on:
-
Ubuntu 14.04, Linux Mint 17.3, MATE, 64bit, Kernel 4.4.0-116 (LTS)
-

Could it be an incompability with the newest Spectre/Meltdown-Patches in
Kernel(s)?

I heard about a lot of work and changes because of this.

So i hope tp-smapi (or the Kernel) could be fixed and running stable
with next Kernel-or tp-smapi-upgrade.

Thank's for caring!
