[Bug 1771223] Re: Cannot connect to L2TP network

2018-05-16 Thread Fredrik Ålund
There firewall is ok. But I found that something got messed up when trying to
connect to the VPN from inside our office. The VPN should be used outside the
office of course, but I just wanted to test it. I don't know why, but it
started working after doing "apt purge --auto-remove network-manager-l2tp*
strongswan* xl2tpd && apt install network-manager-l2tp
network-manager-l2tp-gnome" and then NOT connect from inside our office. If I
did, I hade to run "apt purge..." again.
Anyway, it's working for me now. Thank you very much for your help.

[Bug 1771520] [NEW] Xsane delays to start receiving data until scan finishes

2018-05-16 Thread Victor Marin
Public bug reported:

In all Ubuntu / Kubuntu versions I have used, Xsane always started to
receive data as soon as the scanner starts exploring the document.

But in Kubuntu 18.04 Xsane waits to start receiving data until the
scanner has finished exploring, which it makes much slower to scan
several documents.

[Bug 1771345] Re: lscpu possible crash in min/max frequency

2018-05-16 Thread Julian Andres Klode
** Description changed:

- The following fixes are in 2.32 and also need to be backported to
- bionic, artful, and xenial:
+ [Impact]
+ lscpu prior to 2.32 does not correctly check for NULL members in min/max CPU
frequency arrays and can call atof() on them, leading to crashes. It seems
that's what caused the verification to fail for bug 1732865. The following
fixes have been committed upstream:

-
https://github.com/karelzak/util-linux/commit/0145d84a381fc2fcd7d37e0dbf3d9dff69609ecd
-
https://github.com/karelzak/util-linux/commit/95f09bc63c564c50ec2c393352801cc056faaea2
+ from 2.30: https://github.com/karelzak/util-
+ linux/commit/0145d84a381fc2fcd7d37e0dbf3d9dff69609ecd

- This should also fix the crash in bug 1732865
+ from 2.32: https://github.com/karelzak/util-
+ linux/commit/95f09bc63c564c50ec2c393352801cc056faaea2
+
+ I plan to backport them to xenial (both patches); and artful, bionic
+ (second patch, they are > 2.30).
+
+ [Regression potential]
+ The worst possible regression is that lscpu would fail to correctly report
min/max frequencies, but it seems unlikely, as we're only adding checks against
null pointers / move an atof into a loop.
+
+ [Test case]
+ I'm afraid I don't have a test case, the bugs only manifest on some CPUs, and
I don't know which.

[Bug 1771525] Re: Scanner not detected if plugged once Kubuntu 18.04 is running

2018-05-16 Thread Victor Marin
Also, I just confirmed that although Xsane and other scan programs like
Simple Scan and Skanlite detect the scanner (only if it is already
plugged in when Kubuntu 18.04 starts), however only Xsane works Ok
(except that in this 18.04 version of Kubuntu Xsane program only starts
receiving data once the exploration of the document has finished, which
makes much slower scanning several documents, as I describe in the Bug
#1771520.

Simple Scan and Skanlite detects the EPSON Perfection V39 scanner (if
already plugged before starting Kubuntu 18.04 as above said) but don't
start scanning.

[Bug 1771534] [NEW] Upgrade Vulkan loader to 1.1 version in Xenial to support 1.1 features

2018-05-16 Thread Sandeep
Public bug reported:

Current loader version on Xenial (16.04) is 1.0.42 where as on bionic
it's 1.1.70, which supports all the APIs which are part of Vulkan 1.1
specification.

Xenial should also upgrade to Vulkan 1.1 loader version so that app
using it's APIs will work.

[Bug 1771329] Re: Can't open apps due to Too many open files

2018-05-16 Thread Joe Littlejohn
I think there's a strong argument that the default max open files for
Ubuntu Desktop should be higher than it is now. Modern apps use a lot of
file handles.

[Bug 1771539] [NEW] Xorg crash

2018-05-16 Thread Mario Costa
Public bug reported:

When I try to use ubuntu with dual desktop display it crashes
continuously, and entering into login mode.

I cannot use dual display.
To use an external monitor, I have to start the laptop with the computer closed.

It seems to be related to the graphic card, maybe dual graphic card of
the laptop.

[Bug 1771329] Re: Can't open apps due to Too many open files

2018-05-16 Thread Joe Littlejohn
I tried the following:

echo '* hard nofile 65535' | sudo tee -a /etc/security/limits.conf
echo '* soft nofile 65535' | sudo tee -a /etc/security/limits.conf
echo 'session required pam_limits.so' | sudo tee -a /etc/pam.d/common-session

then restarted.

This did not fix the issue. So that's one 'increase limits' strategy we
can rule out - it doesn't work for this particular problem.

[Bug 1728012] Re: Many 3rd party scanner drivers are broken by a sane change

2018-05-16 Thread Manuel
I'm affected as well, my scanner is an Epson GT-S50 (0x04b8 0x0137).

I've documented my observations and trials to resolve on askubuntu.com:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1034528/epson-gt-s50-scanner-not-
working-after-upgrade-to-18-04-from-16-04

I tried also to do a fresh install of Bionic, but same issue.

I tried to specify my scanner in /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf (I've added
"usb 0x04b8 0x0137" -without the double quotes- in the appropriate
section of the file) and added the following UDEV rules in a
55-libsane.rules file under /etc/udev/rules.d/

> SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", MODE=="0666"
SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", MODE=="0666"
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0137", MODE="0666",
GROUP="scanner", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

So far, no luck, scanner remains stubbornly undetected :'(

  We currently have no autopkgtest logs before snapd hits -proposed
  because we got asked to disable our autopkgtest integration as it was
  using too many resources from the autopkgtest infrastructure.

  The snappy team released a new release that we want SRU into xenial. The
  new process described in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SnapdUpdates was used
  and we have done integration-tests on the snappy images, autopkgtests on
  classic and unit tests.

[Bug 1771524] [NEW] Merge newer dovecot for Cosmic

2018-05-16 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
Public bug reported:

There are a few things that make this merge more uncommon than usual
1. Upstream has a new stable series 2.3 and are on 2.3.1 already.
   Debian is working on is, but still in experimental, but we'd like to do that
for Cosmic.
   Therefore syncing on https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=896674
2. a bunch of new build deps in Debian, but all are in main already
   libapparmor-dev, liblua5.3-dev, libsodium-dev, libicu-dev
3. We will drop mail-stack-delivery as what the addition provided is these days
done
   a) already in base package (like ssl setup)
   b) otherwise in external projects e.g. mail-in-a-box
   c) Users might volunteer to maintainer what mail-stack-delivery was, but do
so outside of the package

[Bug 1771524] Re: Merge newer dovecot for Cosmic

2018-05-16 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2018-March/040264.html
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2018-May/040324.html

I already answered, but I can't find it in the archive - so I quote my mail
here to be sure:
Hi Phillip, Serge and Mark,
I appreciate community interest in this - but from what I heard so far you'd be
just as good with an out of tree solution not part of the actual (dovecot)
packaging right?
The current mail-stack-delivery does modify config files for you, so you could
drive the same via e.g. a github project just as Mark does with his mail server
he mentioned.
If it finds a lot of followers it might become a next mail-in-a-box - and if
not it is fine as well - a community is meant to live and try out things.
If you want you can start with what today's mail-stack-delivery does, but I
think this is not required (maybe better from scratch).

@Phillip/Serge:
I don't know if you'd prefer a github project or similar that just provides a
bit of scripting or if you explicitly want to maintain it as a package?
I'd think it is not needed, but I'm fine with the latter as well, but in that
case I'd still want to take it out of the dovecot package this cycle and you
can then push it as a universe community package (or as a snap) separate to
that.
This would simplify the doveot packaging, but not prevent you from maintaining
the same the way you want - so would that be ok for you as well?

[Bug 1771525] [NEW] Scanner not detected if plugged once Kubuntu 18.04 is running

2018-05-16 Thread Victor Marin
Public bug reported:

In Kubuntu 16.04 the scanners were detected by Xsane or other scan
programs as soon as it were plugged in. Also, if you unplugged it then
plugged in again also Xsane detected it immediately.

But in Kubuntu 18.04 the scanner is not detected by Xsane if you plug in
once Kubuntu 18.04 already running. Only it's detected if you starts
session with the scanner already plugged in. And if you unplugg it then
plug it again it is not detected anymore and you must restart the
computer with the cable plugged into the USB, to be detected.

It happens the same thing with other scan programs like Skanlite or
Simple Scan.

[Bug 1771329] Re: Can't open apps due to Too many open files

2018-05-16 Thread Joe Littlejohn
Thanks @dino99. I've seen a lot of different suggestions for tackling
this error, so it would be good to understand exactly which config
change is the critical one.

I think this is a major bug on a newly installed system. As an Ubuntu
Desktop user I shouldn't be experiencing an issue where the OS stops me
from launching any new app once I have a few apps open. I shouldn't need
to go hunting through logs to and start googling for a solution, then
modify open file limits, just to run a handful of desktop applications.

[Bug 1728012] Re: Many 3rd party scanner drivers are broken by a sane change

2018-05-16 Thread luca.mg
After a bunch of Bionic updates the Brother MFC 1910W scanner gave up
working; I have had to install the libsane-extras package and add the
line "brother4" to the file /etc/sane.d/dll.d/libsane-extras to regain
control of the device. Weird enough the Epson scanner wasn't affected by
the updates.

[Bug 1771537] [NEW] Kexec -p Seems load kernel failed, and doesn't reboot after a panic

2018-05-16 Thread LovelyLich
Public bug reported:

After install linux-crashdump, everything seems successfully. But when I
trigger an panic over:
  echo c > /proc/sysrq-trigger
, kernel panics and hungs, and doesn't reboot. even if i do the following:
  echo 10 > /proc/sys/kernel/panic

And it is reproducible on my system.
Here is my system information:

rs@ubuntuDev$ uname -a
Linux ubuntuDev 3.19.0-80-generic #88~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 13 14:54:07
UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

And it is the lsb info:
rs@ubuntuDev$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
Release:14.04
Codename:   trusty
rs@ubuntuDev$

Here is result of kdump-config show before i trigger an panic:
rs@ubuntuDev$ kdump-config show
DUMP_MODE:kdump
USE_KDUMP:1
KDUMP_SYSCTL: kernel.panic_on_oops=1
KDUMP_COREDIR:/var/crash
crashkernel addr: 0x2d00
current state:ready to kdump

kexec command:
  /sbin/kexec -p --command-line="BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.19.0-80-generic
root=UUID=5f248d51-af51-4178-bd4d-763d4a6648b3 ro console=ttyS0 console=tty0
irqpoll maxcpus=1 nousb" --initrd=/boot/initrd.img-3.19.0-80-generic
/boot/vmlinuz-3.19.0-80-generic
rs@ubuntuDev$

And I have successfully solved this problem by these steps after the above
kdump-config show:
1: /sbin/kexec -p
--command-line="root=UUID=5f248d51-af51-4178-bd4d-763d4a6648b3 ro console=ttyS0
console=tty0 irqpoll maxcpus=1 nousb"
--initrd=/boot/initrd.img-3.19.0-80-generic /boot/vmlinuz-3.19.0-80-generic
2: echo c > /proc/sysrq-trigger
And this time, system successfully rebooted into the secondary kernel whiout
crashkernel param, and the vmcore is dumpped successfully.

So, It seems we should strip out the BOOT_IMAGE string from result of `cat
/proc/cmdline`.

As a result, we need change kdump-config script from:
# Assemble the --commmand-line:
if [ -z "$KDUMP_CMDLINE" ] ; then
KDUMP_CMDLINE=`cat /proc/cmdline | \
sed -r -e 's/(^| )crashkernel=[^ ]*//g' \
   -e 's/(^| )hugepages=[^ ]*//g' \
   -e 's/(^| )hugepagesz=[^ ]*//g' \
   -e 's/(^| )abm=[^ ]*//g'`
fi

into:

# Assemble the --commmand-line:
if [ -z "$KDUMP_CMDLINE" ] ; then
KDUMP_CMDLINE=`cat /proc/cmdline | \
sed -r -e 's/(^| )crashkernel=[^ ]*//g' \
   -e 's/(^| )hugepages=[^ ]*//g' \
   -e 's/(^| )hugepagesz=[^ ]*//g' \
   -e 's/(^| )abm=[^ ]*//g'` \
   -e 's/(^| )BOOT_IMAGE=[^ ]*//g'
fi

Could you guys re-check this bug?
I can provide other information with pleasure, if needed.

[Bug 1771273] Re: Gnome-shell crashes when wake up after updated to 3.28.1-0ubuntu2

2018-05-16 Thread Zihang Ye
Hi Daniel, after read through your suggestion, I found some problem. I'm
actually using Wayland, so that shouldn't be a Xorg crash, right?
And in the /etc/gdm3/custom.conf, I saw this:
# Uncomment the line below to force the login screen to use Xorg
# WaylandEnabled=false
So does that mean during my usage of my system, I've never activated the Xorg
server? I don't know much about how things work.

[Bug 1728012] Re: Many 3rd party scanner drivers are broken by a sane change

2018-05-16 Thread Manuel
ADDENDUM to #129: Ah! Success!

I followed the advice of comment #28
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sane-
backends/+bug/1728012/comments/28), and it works !!!

Did the following:
$ sudo ln -sfr /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epkowa* /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane

Then:
1. Removed the "usb 0x04b8 0x0137" entry I had added to /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf
2. Added a 55-epson-libsane.rules file to /etc/udev/rules.d/ with the following
text:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", MODE=="0666"
SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", MODE=="0666"
ATTRS{manufacturer}=="EPSON", DRIVERS=="usb", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb",
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="*", MODE="0666"
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0137", MODE="0666",
GROUP="scanner", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

Finally I unplugged / plugged my scanner and tried:
$ scanimage -L

And got this encouraging answer:
device `epkowa:interpreter:003:011' is a Epson GT-S50 flatbed scanner

Then I started iscan (Image Scan!) and it immediately detected my scanner.
I then could successfully scan a page.

The workaround is thus effective! Thanks to all contributions :-)

[Bug 1771504] [NEW] Sometime cannot enter to Ubuntu 18.04

2018-05-16 Thread Andrey
Public bug reported:

I saw already on several machines with Ubuntu 18.04, that at loading it
is impossible to select users and to enter the password for an input,
only the pure screen. If you switch to another console and log in under
any user name and return to the graphical console, the selection menu
appears

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected bionic

** Description changed:

  On 4.13 kernels I cannot change brightness of my display. Other users of the
same laptop model also have the issue. Using kernel 4.10 the problem doesn't
happen and brightness can be changed using hardware buttons(fn+f5, fn+f6). On
4.13 I cannot find any settings that would allow me to change brightness.
  On 4.13 linux always starts with really dimmed screen which makes the
computer hard to use in any kind of daylight, even indoors.

[Bug 1771511] [NEW] Desktop lockdown vanished

2018-05-16 Thread Stefan
Public bug reported:

In 14.04 and 16.04, as desktop lockdown ("kiosk mode") we disabled the gsetting
"org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons".
Nautilus then disabled the context menu when a user right clicks on the
background and didn't show any icons, but still showed the wallpaper - nice!
I tested this with nautilus 1:3.18.4.is.3.14.3-0ubuntu6 and earlier.

In 18.04 (tested version 1:3.26.3-0ubuntu4), this flag is not honored,
any more. After source code inspection, I saw, the nautilus-desktop is
always started in mode "--forced" which ignores this flag, completely.

Then I tried to remove the option "--forced" from nautilus-
classic.desktop, but nautilus-desktop didn't start, the whole session
didn't start (I think this is lp bug #1633826).

What can I do to get the desktop locking, again? Thanks for your help.
