[Bug 1833586] Re: open-iscsi unconditionally requires ib_iser module which is not built on all Ubuntu kernels

2019-06-21 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Glad to find this discussed and solved already when waking up - thanks
Ryan and Steve!

To complete the discussions I'm adding a little reference as on IRC it seemed
this question was left open:
"[20:40] rharper: right, I also fundamentally question why the
open-iscsi package should hard-code the modules for loading if there's
additional configuration required (not necessarily extra packages, but at least
non-default config options that should maybe be detected to trigger on-demand
module loading)"

I think the history on this is [1] which was converting an old
unconditional load (that would do || true, and therefore never make it
fail/bad) into something else which instead of the old code had the
negative effect that Steve reported here initially.

[Bug 1832859] Re: during shutdown libvirt-guests gets stopped after file system unmount

2019-06-21 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
It seems - somewhat expected - that the solution needs to be a bit
bigger due to further service dependencies that might create a loop.
Until that solution is sorted out upstream we should not implement
another custom emergency fix that might cause more trouble.

Instead while we wait on the final solution by upstream I'd recommend
that everybody affected needs to evaluate his own system if the
modification suggested in comment #8 would suffice as a workaround for
you.

[Bug 1833660] Re: /lib/udev/rules.d/99-gce.rules tries to apply 'scheduler=none' to partitions

2019-06-21 Thread kkm
** Description changed:

  Xfer: https://github.com/GoogleCloudPlatform/compute-image-
  packages/issues/783

  I initially reported the bug there, but it appears the file is owned by
  you guys?

  I see this bug in Google Cloud images of 18.04 in
  --image=ubuntu-1804-bionic-v20190514 --image-project=gce-uefi-images.

  What happens is, the image contains the file
  /lib/udev/rules.d/99-gce.rules with the following rule:

  # Switch to using NOOP as the default scheduler per GCE request
  SUBSYSTEM=="block", ACTION=="add|change", ENV{ID_VENDOR}=="*Google*",
ATTR{queue/scheduler}="noop"

  The rule matches both devices (/sda) and partitions (/sda1), but the
  scheduler is a device property and does not apply to partition. These
  lines are logged multiple times during the first boot of the image, when
  the partition and the filesystem is grown, and once on every subsequent
  boot, once per every partition:

  To repro, no GCE necessary; you can boot any VM with the guest using the
  virtio driver, drop in this file, and run e. g. parted, or any program
  opening the raw device, as it triggers kernel uevents. Start parted, and
  the messages are logged. Quit parted, and they are logged again.

  This issue is harmless, but when you ingest logs, you'd rather have them
  as error-level message free as possible.

  I can think of 3 ways to solve this issue:

  1. Make the rule not match partitions. I drop-replace this file in all
  my images with the following:

- SUBSYSTEM=="block", ENV{DEVTYPE}!="partition", ACTION=="add|change",
+ SUBSYSTEM=="block", ENV{DEVTYPE}!="partition", ACTION=="add|change",
  ENV{ID_VENDOR}=="*Google*", ATTR{queue/scheduler}="noop"

  2. Since Ubuntu is providing GCE images, kernel command line option
  'elevator=none' sets the I/O scheduler to all applicable devices by
  default; no udev integration necessary. The default is not locked, so if
  anyone needs to change it (e. g. for a physical disk directly attached
  to a VM, not a GCE setup but in a local VM it's possible), they can
  select a different elevator strategy with udev rules. This is the
  setting widely recommended by other Linux-based system, e. g. there is a
  RHEL support page recommending that. It obviously a better choice shift
  the I/O elevation job to the host, as it handles requests from all
  guests, and can prioritize I/O much better, as it has all consolidated
  information available at any moment for the physical device actually
  doing the block I/O.

- 3. Since these GCE images come with a special kernel build (it has a
- '-gcp' version suffix), the default of none can be simply selected at
- compile time. It also make sense to compile in virtio into the kernel;
- as it is, the device is probed from initramfs. Since all VM boot drives

[Bug 1833679] [NEW] Missing libspreadsheet-parsexlsx-perl package

2019-06-21 Thread AlainKnaff
Public bug reported:

libspreadsheet-read-perl (perl package Spreadsheet::Read) needs
Spreadsheet::ParseXLSX to work correctly. However, by default Ubuntu
includes Spreadsheet::XLSX (libspreadsheet-xlsx-perl) instead, which
munges date cells, and text cells that contain HTML escapable
characters.

The correct perl package Spreadsheet::ParseXLSX (which would be called
libspreadsheet-parsexlsx-perl package) is not even available in the apt
repositories, and currently needs to be installed manually using CPAN.

Please include this package, and make libspreadsheet-read-perl depend on
it, rather than on the broken libspreadsheet-xlsx-perl

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS

[Bug 1786344] Re: Default IBus input method ignored in live session

2019-06-21 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I have tested the daily build ISO from this morning UTC. If I enter
Ubiquity's welcome screen, select zh_CN from there and "Try Ubuntu",
"Intelligent Pinyin" is now - unlike before - active in the resulting
session, and I can select it via the input source indicator or
+ and start inputting Chinese instantly. Also tried ja_JP,
also with a positive result.

If I enter the isolinux menu, select e.g. ja_JP from there and "Try
Ubuntu before installing", it looks exactly as previously, i.e. "Mozc"
is available together with one Japanse XKB layout. (No regression, in
other words.)

Due to these positive results I will submit a bionic merge proposal with
this change, and with the goal to have this improvement make it to the
18.04.3 ISO.

You also didn't answer the part about the screen going back, is that the

Upgrading to kernel package linux-image-5.0.0-16-generic and linux-
image-5.0.0-17-generic cause the keyboard which is a USB 2 device
connected to a USB C hub on my Dell XPS 13 to behave erratically. The
keyboard is fine when plugged directly into the laptop's USB rather than
into the USB C hub on 5.0.0-16, so it seems to be a USB-C problem in
5.0.0-16.

The previous kernel (linux-image-5.0.0-15-generic) doesn't have this
problem.

All USB bugs should be sent to the linux-...@vger.kernel.org mailing
list, and not entered into bugzilla. Please bring this issue up there,
if it is still a problem in the latest kernel release.

[Bug 1833067] Re: FTBFS on amd64 / i386 when compiled with new hardening defaults in eoan

2019-06-21 Thread Alex Murray
I am a bit stumped on this one - glibc_2.29-0ubuntu3 built fine in my
PPA (https://launchpad.net/~alexmurray/+archive/ubuntu/gcc-stack-clash-
protection2) but FTBFS on amd64/i386 for eoan-proposed - but I cannot
reproduce the same failure locally either in an schroot or in an eoan VM
- however, it does still FTBFS in both cases locally BUT with different
tests failing (and different than the eoan-proposed failures):

Failures from eoan-proposed:
-
FAIL: debug/tst-backtrace5
FAIL: nptl/tst-cancel24
FAIL: nptl/tst-cancelx16
FAIL: nptl/tst-cancelx18
FAIL: nptl/tst-cancelx20
FAIL: nptl/tst-cancelx21
FAIL: nptl/tst-cancelx4
FAIL: nptl/tst-cancelx5
FAIL: nptl/tst-oncex3
FAIL: nptl/tst-oncex4

Failures from an eoan schroot running on a bionic (with hwe kernel) host:
-
FAIL: io/tst-copy_file_range

Failures from an eoan VM building glibc_2.29-0ubuntu3 locally:
--
FAIL: nptl/test-condattr-printers
FAIL: nptl/test-cond-printers
FAIL: nptl/test-mutexattr-printers
FAIL: nptl/test-mutex-printers
FAIL: nptl/test-rwlockattr-printers
FAIL: nptl/test-rwlock-printers

I am currently trying to see if perhaps a different host kernel behaves
differently for the schroot build case.

[Bug 1793640] Re: Pulseaudio fails to detect sound card, while timidity is installed

2019-06-21 Thread Lastique
A user in that bug already verified that it works. What I'm pointing out
is that the user/group fix is not implemented in the Debian or Ubuntu
package, and as long as that bug is closed it's not likely become
implemented.

[Bug 1833211] Re: New upstream microreleases 9.5.18, 10.9 and 11.5

2019-06-21 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
B/C got published as well:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/postgresql-10/10.9-0ubuntu0.18.10.1
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/postgresql-10/10.9-0ubuntu0.18.04.1

Setting those releases to Fix Released as well.

As discussed before Xenial will follow the non-security SRU path.
Since this is now public I'm opened up the bug visibility and uploaded to
xenial -unapproved.

** Information type changed from Private Security to Public Security

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ * MRE for latest stable fixes of Postgres.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * The Postgres MREs traditionally rely on the large pack of autopkgtests
+to run for verification. In a PPA those are all already pre-checked to
+be good for this upload.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * Upstreams tests are usually great and also in the Archive there are
+plenty of autopkgtests that in the past catched issues before released.
+But never the less
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ * This is a reoccurring MRE, see below and all the references
+
+ ---
+
  Current versions in supported releases:
   postgresql-9.5 | 9.5.17-0ubuntu0.16.04 xenial
   postgresql-10 | 10.8-0ubuntu0.18.04.1 bionic
   postgresql-10 | 10.8-0ubuntu0.18.10.1 cosmic
   postgresql-11 | 11.3-0ubuntu0.19.04.1 disco
   postgresql-11 | 11.3-1 eoan

  Special cases:
  - Eoan will as usual be synced from Debian

  Last relevant related stable updates: 9.5.18, 10.9, 11.4

  This is out of the usual cycle for CVE: CVE-2019-10164

  Standing MRE - Consider last updates as template:
  - pad.lv/1637236
  - pad.lv/1664478
  - pad.lv/1690730
  - pad.lv/1713979

  - pad.lv/1752271
  - pad.lv/1786938
  - pad.lv/1815665
  - pad.lv/1828012

  As usual we test and prep from the PPA and then push through
  SRU/Security as applicable.

  Regression potential:
  - usually this works smoothly except a few test hickups that need to be
    clarified to be sure. Pre-checks will catch those to be discussed (as last
time)

  Note: opening private as it is not yet announced
  Public announce will on this Thursday.

[Bug 1679392] Re: Missing dep8 tests

2019-06-21 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
We have made other tests work using scsi_debug module [1] which usually is
available and would work at least in "isolation-machine" environments.
One could check if/what sg tools can query from that.

Another case that could be used to learn from are the tests of packages tgt and
multipath-tools.
There we set up iscsi using TGT, if sg_tools can query something that we can
construct we could check if the data is as expected.

[Bug 1833671] [NEW] bond interfaces stop working after restart of systemd-networkd

2019-06-21 Thread Tom Hughes
Public bug reported:

Running systemd-networkd from systemd 237-3ubuntu10.23 on Ubuntu 18.04.2
I have one machine where, every time systemd-networkd restarts (ie every
time there is an update to systemd) the bond0 interface stops working.

I see both physical interfaces go soft down and then come back again:

Jun 21 07:28:24 odin.openstreetmap.org systemd[1]: systemd 237 running in
system mode. (+PAM +AUDIT +SELINUX +IMA +APPARMOR +SMACK +SYSVINIT +UTMP

after 200 ms for interface eno2
Jun 21 07:28:25 odin.openstreetmap.org kernel: bond0: link status up again
after 100 ms for interface eno1

and after that nothing until I stop systemd-networkd, delete the bond
interface, and then start systemd-networkd again.

On most machines the cycle seems to take a bit longer and the interfaces
reach a hard down start before coming back and in that case there seems
to be no problem.

I think this is likely an instance of this upstream bug:

https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/10118

which has a fix here:

https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/10465

[Bug 1833331] Re: 10mail script should use sendmail command, not the mail command

2019-06-21 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
"invoke sendmail* if available on the system"

Might OTOH be too much of a departure from expected/usual behavior for other
users of this.
I wonder if it really is that easy to alternate between mailx/sendmail if that
could be done via a config file that defaults to mailx but could be changed to
sendmail.

That would not affect the behavior by magic, but would allow to change
the config for those who want that. I think that would be the best
option for distributions but you'd not want to deviate with that
behavior or you get a long term maintenance debt.

@Christian F. - would such a configurability of the used mailer be
something that upstream would want add?

[Bug 1814146] Re: libspice-server1 >=0.14.0-1 causes Win7 guest bsod in qxldd.sys

2019-06-21 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
[1] breaks some projects rebuilds.
Most are good I think, but we probably need 0.36/0.37 of [2] spice-gtk.
Unfortunately this is complex as the fix is actually in spice-common path but
packaged into spice-gtk.

spice-common/common/generated_client_marshallers.c:303:if (src->type ==
SPICE_TUNNEL_SERVICE_TYPE_IPP) {
spice-common/common/generated_server_demarshallers.c:1487:if
(type__value == SPICE_TUNNEL_SERVICE_TYPE_IPP) {
spice-common/common/generated_server_demarshallers.c:1541:if (out->type ==
SPICE_TUNNEL_SERVICE_TYPE_IPP) {

This isn't in git at all, it only is in the 0.37 tarball [3] of spice-gtk but
with a change to the paths that need changes to the build ...
Arrr, this should be so easy.

Try the user/group fix mentioned there first:

If that works then we know what kind of fix to propose to Ubuntu or

If that doesn't work then please email 901...@bugs.debian.org pointing

[Bug 1833660] [NEW] /lib/udev/rules.d/99-gce.rules tries to apply 'scheduler=none' to partitions

2019-06-21 Thread kkm
Public bug reported:

Xfer: https://github.com/GoogleCloudPlatform/compute-image-
packages/issues/783

I initially reported the bug there, but it appears the file is owned by
you guys?

I see this bug in Google Cloud images of 18.04 in
--image=ubuntu-1804-bionic-v20190514 --image-project=gce-uefi-images.

What happens is, the image contains the file
/lib/udev/rules.d/99-gce.rules with the following rule:

# Switch to using NOOP as the default scheduler per GCE request
SUBSYSTEM=="block", ACTION=="add|change", ENV{ID_VENDOR}=="*Google*",
ATTR{queue/scheduler}="noop"

The rule matches both devices (/sda) and partitions (/sda1), but the
scheduler is a device property and does not apply to partition. These
lines are logged multiple times during the first boot of the image, when
the partition and the filesystem is grown, and once on every subsequent
boot, once per every partition:

Jun  3 04:46:49 toy-sec-1 systemd-udevd[1442]: error opening
ATTR{/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:03.0/virtio0/host0/target0:0:1/0:0:1:0/block/sda/sda1/queue/scheduler}
 for writing: No such file or directory
Jun  3 04:46:49 toy-sec-1 systemd-udevd[1438]: error opening
ATTR{/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:03.0/virtio0/host0/target0:0:1/0:0:1:0/block/sda/sda15/queue/scheduler}
 for writing: No such file or directory
Jun  3 04:46:49 toy-sec-1 systemd-udevd[1437]: error opening
ATTR{/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:03.0/virtio0/host0/target0:0:1/0:0:1:0/block/sda/sda14/queue/scheduler}
 for writing: No such file or directory

To repro, no GCE necessary; you can boot any VM with the guest using the
virtio driver, drop in this file, and run e. g. parted, or any program
opening the raw device, as it triggers kernel uevents. Start parted, and
the messages are logged. Quit parted, and they are logged again.

This issue is harmless, but when you ingest logs, you'd rather have them
as error-level message free as possible.

I can think of 3 ways to solve this issue:

1. Make the rule not match partitions. I drop-replace this file in all
my images with the following:

SUBSYSTEM=="block", ENV{DEVTYPE}!="partition", ACTION=="add|change",
ENV{ID_VENDOR}=="*Google*", ATTR{queue/scheduler}="noop"

3. Since these GCE images come with a special kernel build (it has a
'-gcp' version suffix), the default of none can be simply selected at
compile time. It also make sense to compile in virtio into the kernel;
as it is, the device is probed from initramfs. Since all VM boot drives
are virtio, it is probably a sensible choice to have it compiled-in;
definitely so for the GCP-specific kernel build.

Thanks, you'll probably know better than me which of these (or maybe
other options I could not think of right now), as you probably
understand all the implications I'm likely unaware of, so I'm just
sharing my thoughts on this issue, not preferring any of these.

I did not check other images available from the same GCE project, but
I'm sure if the rule is there, the result will be identical--it's a
kernel thing, and partitions do not have I/O schedulers by design.

[Bug 1832915] Re: numad crashes while running kvm guest

2019-06-21 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Interesting, for me the issue was no more reproducible with the fix
applied.

Maybe there is another bug in the same code that you hit now.
Could you tell me all details about the involved setup in triggering this crash
still?

Further this should have created a crash dump /var/crash/.
Probably best is to clean this up, let it crash again and then attach the crash
here so I can take a look at where/why it might crash still for you.

[Bug 1793640] Re: Pulseaudio fails to detect sound card, while timidity is installed

2019-06-21 Thread Lastique
I have tested on Kubuntu 19.04:

1. After installing timidity-daemon, the timidity user is automatically created
and added to the audio group. After reboot, the primary audio output device is
inaccessible in PulseAudio.
2. After removing timidity user from audio group and rebooting, PulseAudio is
able to use all audio output devices, as expected. I don't know how to test
whether timidity works.
3. Purging timidity-daemon and timidity packages does *not* remove the timidity
user. So, if the packages were installed before, after purging the user stays
in the system and in the audio group. You have to manually remove the user
(either completely or just from the audio group) using deluser. I think, that
the user stays in the system may be a bug on its own.

** Description changed:

  For the customer OpenStack deployment we deploy infra nodes on Dell R630
  servers. The servers have onboard Broadcom's NetXtreme II BCM57800 NIC
  (quad port: 2x1G ports, 2x10G ports). For each port in UP state, we
  observe 100% CPU load. So in total, we observe 4 CPUs with 100% load.

  perf report shows function bnx2x_ptp_task taking up much of the CPUs
  time: https://pastebin.canonical.com/p/kfrpd6Pwh5/

  Also, /var/log/syslog contains the following outputs every few seconds:

- [1738143.581721] bnx2x: [bnx2x_start_xmit:3855(eno4)]The device supports only
a single outstanding packet to timestamp, this packet will not be timestamped
- [1738176.727642] bnx2x: [bnx2x_start_xmit:3855(eno1)]The device supports only
a single outstanding packet to timestamp, this packet will not be timestamped
- [1738207.988310] bnx2x: [bnx2x_start_xmit:3855(eno3)]The device supports only
a single outstanding packet to timestamp, this packet will not be timestamped
- [1738240.227333] bnx2x: [bnx2x_start_xmit:3855(eno2)]The device supports only
a single outstanding packet to timestamp, this packet will not be timestamped
+ [1738143.581721] bnx2x: [bnx2x_start_xmit:3855(eno4)]The device supports only
a single outstanding packet to timestamp, this packet will not be timestamped

+ [1738240.227333] bnx2x: [bnx2x_start_xmit:3855(eno2)]The device supports only
a single outstanding packet to timestamp, this packet will not be timestamped

  So, the problem seems to be in a "timestampped" TX packet; the driver
  for some reason (to be yet understood) get an unexpected value from a
  register and then, it that same function, reschedule itself to try again
  this register read, read gets a bad value again, and so on infinitely.

  This is showing in the system as the 100% CPU usage kthreads; the
  message "The device supports only a single outstanding packet to
  timestamp, this packet will not be timestamped" happens because the
  driver can only timestamp a single TX packet at a time, and given it's
  stuck trying, it cannot accept another packet in this "queue".

  The infinite loop appears to be:

- static void bnx2x_ptp_task(struct work_struct *work)
- {
- struct bnx2x *bp = container_of(work, struct bnx2x, ptp_task);
- int port = BP_PORT(bp);
- u32 val_seq;
- u64 timestamp, ns;
- struct skb_shared_hwtstamps shhwtstamps;
+ static void bnx2x_ptp_task(struct work_struct *work)
+ {
+ struct bnx2x *bp = container_of(work, struct bnx2x,

[Bug 1833556] Re: Default, encrypted install runs out of /boot space after 2 months

2019-06-21 Thread Jackalux
** Description changed:

  This bug is about the installer defaults, not this symptom of the bug.

- I installed a fresh install of 18.04 on a laptop with a 750GB HDD.  The
- update-manager reported that I'd ran out of space within 2 months and
- could not perform updates.
+ I installed a fresh encrypted* install of 18.04 on a laptop with a 750GB HDD.
 The update-manager reported that I'd ran out of space within 2 months and
could not perform updates.
+ * AFAIK, encrypted installs place /boot in a separate partition

  'apt autoremove' didn't remove anything and only running the advice from
  http://tuxtweaks.com/2010/10/remove-old-kernels-in-ubuntu-with-one-
  command/ worked, which seems to leave me with no backup kernel.

  This would turn off Noobs who want something that doesn't require almost
  immediate, then ongoing, tech intervention.

  Does the installer need to change the allocated size of /boot in new
  installs? Noobs will run back to Windoze if they encounter this... it
  looks like a fresh install has a shelf life of two months unless you
  learn to fiddle around under the bonnet/hood.

  Blessed are the coders!

[Bug 1793640] Re: Pulseaudio fails to detect sound card, while timidity is installed

2019-06-21 Thread Walter Garcia-Fontes
I confirm that timidity works after removing the timidity user. So
instead of removing timidity all together, another workaround for this
bug is to remove the timidity user and make sure the audio group is
empty.

[Bug 1292041] Re: Lockscreen doesn't turn off the screen

2019-06-21 Thread Digulla-hepe
Same problem as everyone else: Locking the screen with Win+L turns off
the monitors (I get "Signal lost" warnings on them) but after a minute
or so, something turns them back on.

xset q reports:

DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 0Suspend: 0Off: 0
  DPMS is Enabled
  Monitor is On

Note: The same happens when I force the monitors to turn off with

xset dpms force off

In the journal, I see these entries after shutting off the monitors at
