[Bug 1925530] [NEW] Backport Metro Exodus Mesa fix into Hirsute

2021-04-22 Thread AsciiWolf
Public bug reported:

Please, consider backporting an important fix for "memory leak on
descriptor pool reset with layout_size=0" into Ubuntu 21.04 Mesa.
Without this fix, Metro Exodus and possibly other games cause system to
hang or crash after playing for some time.

Here is a MR with the fix:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/merge_requests/10317

It is already staged to be backported into current stable Mesa releases
and so it should be fine to apply it as a downstream patch for Mesa
21.0.1 in Ubuntu Hirsute.

[Bug 1754864] Re: Flatpak related refs are not installed when using GNOME Software on Ubuntu 18.04

2018-10-30 Thread AsciiWolf
You're right. I can confirm that the runtime related refs are now
installed without any issue, however the new code seems to have problems
with downgrades. :-( Unfortunately, I am not a good in C so I cannot fix
it myself and Joaquim Rocha doesn't work on GNOME Software anymore.

Other possible solution to the related refs issue is to switch to the
new GNOME Software 3.30.* version in Bionic instead of using an older
one. This solution is recommended by GS devs because the new GS has many
fixes (not only the Flatpak ones).

By the way, GS developer told me that they didn't want to merge it
because they don't have enough people and time to further maintain it.
So if someone from Canonical would be willing to maintain it in the
gnome-3-28 branch, there should not be any problem having the patches
upstream.

[Bug 1754864] Re: Flatpak runtime extensions are not installed when using GNOME Software on Ubuntu

2018-09-23 Thread AsciiWolf
So the MR !58 got closed and upstream doesn't seem to be interested in
maintaining the Flatpak code in the gnome-3-28 branch anymore. They are
focusing on the new code that is using the FlatpakTransaction API (and
most likely won't be backported into the older GS branch) instead.

[Bug 1864635] Re: "Steam Installer" not available in Software app since latest Steam update

2020-02-27 Thread AsciiWolf
Another possible solution could be to revert the Steam Installer
AppStream file changes completely (keep just the http/https changes and
appdata/metainfo file rename). The .desktop suffix in tag is not
used anymore and the stock icon type is not good according to the
appstream-util validator, but it made appstream-generator happy and
everything worked fine (except launching Steam directly from the
Software app, but that is a minor thing in my opinion).

[Bug 1865063] [NEW] snapd package hangs on deb postinst

2020-02-27 Thread AsciiWolf
Public bug reported:

The snapd package version 2.44~pre1+20.04 on latest Ubuntu 20.04 hangs

This is printed on stdout before it hangs forever:

snapd.snap-repair.service is a disabled or a static unit, not starting it.

How to reproduce:
Upgrade snapd deb package to a new version or manually run "sudo

[Bug 1754864] Re: Flatpak related refs are not installed when using GNOME Software on Ubuntu 18.04

2019-03-31 Thread AsciiWolf
This bug was mentioned in the Ubuntu 18.04.2 release notes as "fixed",
however this issue was not fixed in Ubuntu 18.04 and probably won't be.

As far as I know, Joaquim Rocha now works again on GNOME Software at
Endless, so we could ask him to provide a better patches, but I don't
think the patches will be good enough to include them in Ubuntu
(because, unfortunately, even the upstream Flatpak plugin quality was
bad in the pre-3.30 GNOME Software).

[Bug 1861112] [NEW] Steam package is outdated

2020-01-28 Thread AsciiWolf
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1796464 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1796464

Public bug reported:

The steam/steam-devices packages are outdated in Ubuntu, including
latest Ubuntu Focal. They were last updated two years ago. The outdated
version (1.0.0.54) does not contain proper udev rules for Steam
Controller and VR, does not have conflicts with the official Valve
package solved, and has many other issues that the latest (1.0.0.61-2)
Debian package has already solved.

This will cause many issues for users (most users will probably use it
instead of the official Valve package) when Ubuntu Focal is released.
Please, update the steam package before Ubuntu Focal is released or
remove it (see #1759715).

[Bug 1759715] Re: Remove steam and add to sync blacklist

2020-02-04 Thread AsciiWolf
Some updates regarding points from the original Bug Description:

ad 1. This should be (partially) fixed in the updated Debian version of
steam package: "Add Conflicts/Replaces on steam-launcher."

ad 2. Maybe gnome-software could be fixed to show 32-bit deb packages?
32-bit Steam rpm package from RPM Fusion is displayed without any issue
on Fedora and can be installed without any issue.

Uninstalling is not an issue anymore, because PackageKit now seems to
uninstall unused dependencies on Ubuntu.

ad 3. This does not seem to be a problem anymore. GNOME Software on
Ubuntu shows the Steam Installer without any issue on latest Ubuntu
Focal, just with a generic icon displayed instead of the Steam one (but
I suspect this being caused by another issue since generic icons seem to
be displayed for many apps in Focal).

ad 4. The Flathub version has its own issues, for example devices like
Steam Controller or VR that require own udev rules do not work properly
+ some features like the new, containerised "Steam Linux Runtime" are
also not working at all inside Flatpak. Also, Flatpak is not installed
by-default on Ubuntu and if user do not enable the third-party Flatpak
ppa, it tends to get pretty outdated and problematic, especially on LTS
Ubuntu releases.

ad 5. The Solus Steam integration project development seems to be
stalled (although they moved to a new repo that sees occasional
activity) and their Snap on Snap Store does not seem to be updated
anymore + still requires "--edge" and "--devmode".

ad 6. I fully agree, but since the Flatpak version is problematic and
usable Snap version does not exist anymore, the deb version (just not
the outdated package that is currently in Ubuntu) is the best and least
problematic one that Ubuntu can offer to users.

2020-01-15 Thread AsciiWolf
(It may, however, be another issue, pofiles for 20.04 are not
translatable yet using Launchpad so I am checking it against
translations from 19.10 where only a "_Quit" string was available for
translation and was translated.)

Oops, ignore my previous comments. The "Quit" string seems to be
available in upstream pofiles and is now fully translated in my (Czech)
language.

[Bug 1859960] [NEW] Livepatch polkit rules strings are not translatable

2020-01-16 Thread AsciiWolf
Public bug reported:

The "Manage Livepatch" and "Authentication is required to enable
Livepatch" translatable strings from
/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/com.ubuntu.welcome.policy do not seem to be
available to translate on Launchpad. They were translatable and their
translation was correctly applied in Bionic, however since then (Cosmic,
Disco, Eoan, Focal), they are untranslated and not available on
Launchpad.

[Bug 1731070] Re: "_Skip" button label not translatable

2020-01-16 Thread AsciiWolf
I have just tried installing Ubuntu Focal from latest daily iso and the
Skip button was correctly translated only when clicking "Try Ubuntu" on
the Ubiquity main screen, then running the installer manually using a
desktop icon. When I ran the installer directly using "Install Ubuntu"
button, the Skip button was still untranslated for some reason.

[Bug 1859963] [NEW] Info package on Ubuntu Focal comes preinstalled with desktop file

2020-01-16 Thread AsciiWolf
Public bug reported:

The "info" package that is preinstalled on Ubuntu Focal ships with a
"info.desktop" file that adds a "TeXInfo" desktop launcher displayed
among other apps. The launcher opens a terminal application that is
confusing and user unfriendly for many users. Users that actually want
to use info can do it using a terminal. Please, consider removing the
desktop file or at least set it to not show among other apps.

** Changed in: ubiquity (Ubuntu)

** Summary changed:

- "_Skip" button label not translatable
+ "_Skip" button label translation not correctly applied

** Description changed:

  The "Skip" string is showing as untranslated in non-English Ubuntu

  "_Skip" is not. (See comment #7.)

+ edit: I have re-opened this ticket. The "_Skip" button is now

[Bug 1759715] Re: Remove steam and add to sync blacklist

2020-01-20 Thread AsciiWolf
Here is a changelog from Debian that contains all the new versions that
happened after 1.0.0.54+repack-5ubuntu1:

steam (1.0.0.61-2) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Upload to unstable
  * d/control: Make Homepage more specific
  * Standards-Version: 4.4.0 (no changes required)
  * Use debhelper-compat 12

 -- Simon McVittie   Tue, 16 Jul 2019 08:50:02 +0100

steam (1.0.0.61-1) experimental; urgency=medium

  * New upstream release
- Adds udev rules for NVIDIA Shield input hardware
- d/p/udev-uinput.patch: Drop, applied upstream
- d/p/udev-permissions.patch: Drop, mostly applied upstream.
  The only remaining differences in our package were:
  + Setting TAG+="uaccess" twice on SteamVR device nodes, which
we can drop since it's redundant (once is enough)
  + Setting MODE="0660" on /dev/uinput, which is the default anyway

 -- Simon McVittie   Fri, 21 Jun 2019 13:10:31 +0100

steam (1.0.0.59-4) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Demote steam-devices to a recommendation.

 -- Michael Gilbert   Mon, 04 Feb 2019 02:41:50
+

steam (1.0.0.59-3) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Add Conflicts/Replaces on steam-launcher.
steam-launcher is a Valve-provided package containing the same
launcher as Debian's steam package, and the same udev rules as
Debian's steam-devices package. They are not co-installable: please
install the steam and steam-devices packages from Debian non-free,
*or* the steam and steam-launcher packages from Valve, but do not
mix the two sources.
  * steam-devices: Add Breaks/Replaces on non-matching versions of
steam. This should prevent mixing Debian's steam and steam-devices
with Valve's steam-launcher and steam, while allowing switching
between the two to work. (Closes: #920600)
  * d/scripts/steam: Delete libxcb-dri3.so.0 from the Steam Runtime,
and add a versioned dependency on a newer version for the host
system. This library added ABI without increasing the -version-info,
which means the Steam launcher script can't decide that Debian's
copy is newer and use it in preference to the Steam Runtime copy.
(Closes: #921026)
  * Version the dependencies on libgpg-error0 and libxinerama1 to make
sure the copies on the host system are at least as new as those
provided by the Steam Runtime.
  * d/steam.bug-control: Add more information to bug reports

 -- Simon McVittie   Fri, 01 Feb 2019 11:34:54 +

steam (1.0.0.59-2) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Revert "Adjust VCS metadata for debian/experimental branch"
  * Use DEP-14 branch name debian/master
  * Upload to unstable

 -- Simon McVittie   Fri, 25 Jan 2019 11:24:26 +

steam (1.0.0.59-1) experimental; urgency=medium

  * New upstream release
  * get-orig-source: Use chdist to download Valve's "source" package
with secure-APT authentication
- d/valve-steam-keyring.gpg: Add the signing key for Valve's apt
  repository
  * d/p/udev-permissions.patch: Update for new upstream udev rules
- new HID device 28de:2102 is now included in 60-steam-vr.rules
  * d/gbp.conf: Explicitly disable pristine-tar for this package.
We don't keep upstream "source" in the git repository since that
mostly consists of binary blobs.
  * Display a debconf note if the Nvidia proprietary kernel module is
loaded, but the corresponding i386 libraries are not found.
This seems to be the best we can do without adding a Recommends
on the i386 libraries, which would pull in the binary driver even
on systems that do not have Nvidia hardware. (See #918996)
  * d/scripts/steam: Cope with different installation directories,
such as ~/.local/share/Steam from Valve's official packaging,
without data loss (Closes: #919467)
  * d/scripts/steam: Install to a subdirectory of ~/.steam for new
installations, to avoid ~/.steam/steam trying to be two things
at once (Closes: #916303)
  * Adjust VCS metadata for debian/experimental branch

 -- Simon McVittie   Tue, 22 Jan 2019 10:05:36 +

steam (1.0.0.56-2) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Add myself to Uploaders
  * Import debian/ into salsa.debian.org git (Closes: #913651)
  * d/copyright.in: Really refer to the https form of copyright-format.
d/copyright is generated from d/copyright.in and license files.
(Closes: #916300)
  * Upgrade steam-devices to a hard dependency.
The udev rules are increasingly used by the Steam client for input
remapping, even if no Steam-specific hardware is used. (Closes: #916298)
  * Allow cross-compilation for i386 on a non-i386 build machine
(Closes: #916301)
  * steam-devices: Mark as Multi-Arch: foreign.
Otherwise, this package can't satisfy the steam package's dependency
when installed with `dpkg -i` on an amd64 system (at which time it is
assumed to belong to the host architecture), as opposed to when it
is found in the Packages file for an i386 apt repository.
  * d/scripts/steam: Quote variables defensively
  * Demote nvidia-dr

[Bug 1860425] [NEW] Manually installed deb package cannot be uninstalled

2020-01-21 Thread AsciiWolf
Public bug reported:

This happens on the latest GNOME Software 3.34.2 on Ubuntu Focal.
Manually installed deb package (that does not contain any AppData), for
example Steam from Valve (https://store.steampowered.com/about/), cannot
be uninstalled using Ubuntu Software. The manually installed package
appears under Add-ons section on the Installed tab, but it is gone after
Ubuntu Software is restarted. When right clicking the Steam icon in
GNOME Shell Overview mode and selecting "Show Details", details page
with Ubuntu repository version of steam-launcher is displayed instead.
The only way to remove the deb package using GUI is downloading it
again, clicking "Install", then clicking "Remove" before closing the app
details page.

[Bug 1860428] [NEW] Software sources are behaving strangely when an app is available as Snap

2020-01-21 Thread AsciiWolf
Public bug reported:

This happens on the latest GNOME Software 3.34.2 on Ubuntu Focal. When
an app is (also) available in Snap Store, its sources showed in the
"Sources" drop-down list in window header on app details page are
behaving strangely:

- When an app is available both in the Ubuntu repository and in Snap, default
source displayed is "Ubuntu" although the actual details page displayed is for
Snap version.
- When clicking the drop-down list and selecting a Snap source, the Ubuntu
source disappears.
- When clicking the drop-down list and selecting an Ubuntu source, the whole
drop-down list (so basically all Snap sources) disappears.
- Default source is displayed as "Ubuntu" even for apps that are not available
in Ubuntu repositories, only in Snap Store (for example the powershell).

[Bug 1860433] [NEW] Correct detail pages are not displayed for some apps when opening from Application tab in Settings

2020-01-21 Thread AsciiWolf
Public bug reported:

This happens on the latest GNOME Software 3.34.2 on Ubuntu Focal. When
opening the Settings (GNOME Control Center) app, switching to the
"Applications" tab, selecting some app and clicking "Open in Software"
button, in some cases a wrong details page is displayed. This happens
for example for Firefox that has some Shell Extension page displayed
instead, or for "Additional drivers" that have a details page for their
KDE version displayed instead.

[Bug 1860429] Re: Detail pages are not found for some Snap apps opened from Shell Overview

2020-01-23 Thread AsciiWolf
It seems that not only the Snap apps are matched incorrectly or not
found when clicking "Show Details". For example showing details for the
preinstalled "TeXInfo" app opens page for a "System Info" from Cinnamon
and when clicking a "Source" drop-down list in header of the page, there
is around ~30 different sources for various settings-related apps
displayed.

displayed in the main list) until Ubuntu Software is opened for a first

[Bug 1859963] Re: Info package on Ubuntu Focal comes preinstalled with desktop file

It probably won't be fixed by the Debian package maintainer so this

comment #2).

[Bug 1866841] Re: Add chrome-gnome-shell to ubuntu-desktop recommends

2020-03-24 Thread AsciiWolf
Martin, the new Extensions manager does not support installing new
extensions. It just contains instructions for users to open the
extensions.gnome.org page in their web browser. The functionality to
browse/install extensions via Extensions manager will be added in future
GNOME releases, but it is highly unlikely it will happen in 3.36.
Please, reconsider this. Not adding chrome-gnome-shell to the default
install in Ubuntu 20.04 will basically make it impossible for (non-
expert) users to install new GNOME Shell extensions.

Or did you mean adding the chrome-gnome-shell as a dependency for GNOME
Extensions after this app is moved to a separate package (as noted in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
shell/+bug/1867345/comments/2)?

[Bug 1596623] [NEW] Unity freezes when trying to drag applications between desktops in workspaces mode

2016-06-27 Thread AsciiWolf
Public bug reported:

Dragging the application window from one desktop to another in
workspaces mode causes Unity UI to freeze. The application itself has
focus and can still be controlled by keyboard (not by mouse), but the
Unity UI is frozen. After a minute or two, Compiz crashes on SIGSEGV in
CompWindow::move().
