[Bug 281348] Re: Firefox only shows default icons in toolbars

2008-11-14 Thread ken manheimer
me too, and in case it helps here are the collection of symptoms i see
on kubuntu 8.10, firefox 3.0.3 2008101315, when both ubuntu firefox
options (current as of writing) and tab mix plus (default version as
well as the most recent dev build, 0.3.7pre.081003)

- customize toolbars collection of icons reduced to minimal set
- add-on icons i situated on toolbars gone - eg, Clear Cache, Grab and Drag,
Google toolbar auto-fill
- Add-on toolbars (eg, google toolbar, web developer) appear empty, or
extremely reduced
- toolbar reconfigurations (i move the search box to the empty space in the
navigation toobar) are cancelled (so the search box is back crowding the
address bar)

it may be unrelated, but firefox has crashed several times in the past
few days, just as i've been noticing my toolbar customizations
disappearing. it may be unrelated, but it's a serious problem, and i
strongly suspect a connections.

if i deactivate either tab mix plus or ubuntu firefox options add-ons,
or both, and restart, then i see the full repertoire of available icons
and regain all my customizations. (i haven't been running long enough
to be sure i'm clear of browser crashes.)

i should add that it has *never* been clear to me what i sacrifice by
disabling ubuntu firefox options. i vaguely understand that it enables
firefox add-ons to be installed as debian packages, but don't know how
essential that is to operation. tab mix plus is important enough to my
moment-to-moment browser operation that i go with the uncertain choice
of disabling ubuntu firefox options. i'm hoping you all can fix the
interaction problem, particularly if this is going to disrupt something
important.

[Bug 298173] [NEW] sun-java6-plugin description faulty

2008-11-14 Thread Ken Hays
Public bug reported:

The description of the sun-java6-plugin package says that it is included in the
JRE. This was not true for sun-java6-jre.
It took me a while to decide to install the plugin despite the description.
Works great. But, description needs corrected, at least for the
sun-java6-plugin variant.

1) Ubuntu 8.04 - the Hardy Heron - released in April 2008.
2) 0.61ubuntu9
3) I expected to have the plugin included in the JRE package
4) The plugin was not included

I realize this is not a synaptic bug. However, the Help/Report a Problem
made it easy to submit.

Re: [Bug 321009] Re: 'Broken Pipe' in Evolution email

2009-01-26 Thread Ken Anderson
My apologies, I upgraded to Hardy Heron last week. I was putting together pics
into an email, clicked on send and received message. 'Error while performing
operation - Could not send message; broken pipe'. Upon looking at outgoing
mail, I see I have 29 messages not sent. I began using Evolution in 12/08 and
have not sent out a single email. My 1st failed attemp at Evolution (12/08)
was to Ubuntu us...@list for help w/ Sunjava5, it would not install (still
doesn't). It didn't go out then so I sent it thru my yahoo account. They sent
back an auto-reply stating because I was not registered w/ them, they would
review message to see if they would even respond...no answer back yet. I am
sorry for making this so long but I have 2 problems. 1st is Sunjava 5 install
(doesn't install) which I have reported to Launchpad.  2nd is the Evolution
'broken pipe'. I have looked at other bugs listed but none seem to point to
solution. Thank you for your time, please let
me know what I can do. Ken

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't
include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report
bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html.
We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of
the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Which precise audio/video applications were active when you were playing

[Bug 277915] Re: XBox 360 Controller Automatically becomes mouse in Xorg

2009-01-10 Thread Ken Neely
I found that the fix/workaround helps, but there is one extra weird bug
I am getting here: When ever I run a windows game in wine 1.1.12 that
uses a controller (and worked fine on my logitech dual action) the
screen begins to spin around (???) despite having run this fix. It is as
if wine is registering that my XBox360 controller has a stuck analog
controller.

Also note: I am running games that predate the XBox360 controller
(Stubbs the Zombie and Legacy of Kain Defiance). I Also have a script
that automatically disables compiz whenever I run one of my games.

[Bug 285843] Re: When changed Screen Resolution, theme changed temporarily.

2009-01-11 Thread Ken Resander
I confirm this.

In my case changing screen resolution from 800x600 to 640x480 causes
change of appearance.

Using Ubuntu 8.10.
uname -a
Linux ken-desktop 2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 21:57:00 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

I am using the ubuntu's default theme Human. When changing screen
resolution from 800x600 to 640x480 via System-Preferences-Appearance
the screen appearance changes to that of theme Glider (the first listed
by the Appearance GUI).

To produce: start Ubuntu, set resolution to 800x600 via
System-Preferences-Screen Resolution. Then change resolution to
640x480 via same GUI. Appearance changes to Glider.

Work around: select System-Preferences-Appearance and do nothing. This
causes the Human appearance theme to show.

- Turn off sound coming to your desktop. Sound transfer from rdesktop

moves about a bit ip 20, 21, 22. If I select the new IP and leave the

[Bug 303294] Re: [FF 3.0.4] Downloads hang and must be paused/resumed to continue

2008-11-30 Thread Ken Resander
I confirm this.
It also manifests itself for much smaller files. It can stop stop several times
for files no larger than 20MB. I cannot recall downloads 100MB or larger
running without stopping. It is totally unpredictable.

I have also had a similar problem when saving a single page. The save
causes a download progress bar to appear. For certain pages (don't know
what is peculiar about them) the 'download' stops, but this time the
resume workaround does not work. Instead an error message pops up saying
source file could not be read.

[Bug 303294] Re: [FF 3.0.4] Downloads hang and must be paused/resumed to continue

2008-11-30 Thread Ken Resander
I confirm this.
It also manifests itself for much smaller files. It can stop stop several times
for files no larger than 20MB. I cannot recall downloads 100MB or larger
running without stopping. It is totally unpredictable.

I have also had a similar problem when saving a single page. The save
causes a download progress bar to appear. For certain pages (don't know
what is peculiar about them) the 'download' stops, but this time the
resume workaround does not work. Instead an error message pops up saying
source file could not be read.

[Bug 224307] Re: Firefox does not load encrypted page if the certificate is not trusted

2008-11-30 Thread Ken Sturmer
I am having the same problem. The url of the page I am trying to load
is: http://prague.tv/around-town/prague-directory/

I have been subscribed to this site for over three years! And now all of a
sudden I am unable to find it! If this continues with this or any other site. I
guess I will search for another browser. Evolution was fine, so why did they
screw it up? ( update )
I am not a computer geek, so please do not waste my time with some geeky
explanation. I can understand getting a warning about a page, and allowing the
user to decide for themselves. Not blocking the site from viewing is not user
friendly. In case you don't understand user friendly use your logic. This is
a trusted site, I have been using for three years. Now I cannot view it.

Today I tried it again, this time the page loaded normally. I don't

I receive DAILY. Why I kept getting that error message was beyond me,
and very annoying. I have had this happen before almost always on
European sites.

[Bug 444170] Re: empathy started automatically on incoming message

2009-11-18 Thread Ken VanDine
This isn't really related to the indicator-applet, it is related to the
session applet which can set your status. With empathy, the underlying
telepathy framework has the ability to be online when the empathy
client isn't running. The session applet can set your status to online.
If it does that, and you receive a message it could then open empathy as
a handler for incoming messages. I am not sure what status the
session applet defaults to on login, but I suspect the last known state.

@Ted, can you clarify that?

[Bug 485271] [NEW] Invalid Drop Target results in stuck mouse

2009-11-19 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

If you attempt to drag an icon of off the Applications-Accessories menu
quickly, you will sometimes get a dialog pop-up stating something like
Invalid Drop Target. This occurs without letting go the left mouse
button. Once it does occur, the mouse gets stuck in drop mode and you
can not interact with the desktop or any open application. You are
forced to go to a virtual terminal and kill the gnome-session to
recover. My exact reproducible scenario is to try to quickly drag the
gnome-terminal icon from the Applications-Accessories menu to the
Docky bar in gnome-do.

[Bug 189248] Re: the printer print a blank page

2010-01-05 Thread Ken Corbin
My daughter is having this problem with an HP Deskjet 3650. Acts like
like is printing something, moves the printhead back and forth like it
is printing something, but no ink ever hits the paper. It has done this
ever since I switched her from Windows to Uuntu karmic. Printer still
works OK when we hook it to the Windows box.

This sounds exactly like the problem reported in beg 409962, except that
it is still happening even with packages where this problem is supposed
to be fixed. We are running karmic with cups 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1 and
libpoppler 0.12.0-0ubuntu2.1 and hplip3.9.8-1 ubuntu2. We never had an
earlier version of Ubuntu installed on this system, so I can't tell if
it used to work sometime in the past. The printer still works perfectly
when we hook it up to a Windows system.

If this is the same problem, it would be a ghostscript rather than a
cups issue. The symptom of moving the printhead but not printing any
paper kind of hint at a hplip or ghostscript issue. We need to get this
fixed, tax season is fast approaching and she needs a printer.

[Bug 503786] [NEW] HTML formatted GPG encrypted email not properly handled

2010-01-06 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

If you receive a PGP (GPG) encrypted email from someone using
Thunderbird, and the sender formatted the email using HTML, evolution
will not recognize it as an enciphered block. If the sender chooses the
text format option when writing the email, all is well. I assume
Thunderbird to Thunderbird PGP HTML formatted email works fine. It
would be nice for evolution to support this as well.

I am able to send HTML PGP encrypted email to Thunderbird users without
a problem. I just can't reciprocate. So I require them to format email
to me in text if they want to encrypt - not very neighborly.

Not a bug really, just a cool feature that is in Thunderbird. My
Windows Thunderbird using friends are busting on my Linux again 'cause
of this...

[Bug 493339] Re: Kernel Oops when enabling Intel Wireless on laptop

2009-12-07 Thread Ken Pratt
Now when I shutdown the start up the laptop, I have to go through
several module removals and insertions until I see a Kernel Oops. Once
that occurs, the wireless comes up and all is well - at least until I
shutdown again.

** Description changed:

- I think my laptop was put in suspend mode then I reported. When I did
- the wireless was no longer working and Network Manager shows wireless
- disabled. When I attempt to enable it via the FN-F2 key, I get the
- following oops:
-
- Everything worked fine a week before last. however, I had never
- attempted to place the laptop in suspend mode. I am runung an up2date
- Karmic (9.10) 64 bit desktop distro. The laptop is a Dell Precision
- M6300 and the wireless card is a iwl3945. I can no longer use the
- wireless in my laptop.
-
+ I think my laptop was put in suspend mode then I rebooted it. When I
+ did, the wireless was no longer working and Network Manager shows
+ wireless disabled. When I attempt to enable it via the FN-F2 key, I get
+ the following oops:

[Bug 494059] [NEW] Does not stop one stream after another is started

2009-12-08 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

This seems to be a regression as I see a bug reported against Ubuntu
7.10 that is similar to this.

Start playing the radio stream at:

http://scds20.iad.llnw.net/citadelcc_WMAL_AM?MSWMExt=.asf

Then, using the Last.fm plugin, start playing your Personal Radio by
selecting it then waiting for the song list to file then double clicking
on the first song. The new selection will start playing and the
original stream will continue to play indefinitely.

As an aside, it may be a good idea to un-depress the play button when
the user selects a track that is not the current track. Then a single
click on the play button when a different track is selected will start
it playing.

[Bug 494773] [NEW] Shows Your files are up to date. but icon shows two arrows indicating otherwise

2009-12-09 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

I logged in and see an icon with two arrows chasing each other as the
UbuntuOne icon. When I allow the hover help to pop up it states,
Updatinfg files If I then left click on the icon it indicates
Your files are up to date. The icon changes to a cloud containing an
exclamation point after about 2 minutes. The status message remain the
same. This is confusing.

What does a cloud with an exclamation point in it mean? I'm sure it
makes perfect sense to the developer, but not to me. That icon should
indicate a problem. And, hovering over it or left clicking it should
tell me what the problem is. Instead it says all is ok. I don't
believe it.

[Bug 488299] Re: Can't set Syntax Highlighting

2009-11-27 Thread Ken Fallon
I'm trying to set the syntax highlighting.

Kate recognises xml and not XML and previously I was able to add the
option for files with the extension XML but now there is no option.

According to the Kate site the option should be there.

Just want to add that once the CPU spinning begins I have to kill the

[Bug 434786] Re: tty1 is displayed on boot/shutdown

2009-12-28 Thread Ken B
Symptoms similar to Chaghaboo describes.

System was fine after initial clean installation (complete format of
hard drive) of Ubuntu 9.10. Installed on a Dell Inspiron 1501. After
installation, I searched for hardware drivers within the Ubuntu GUI
interface and installed the wireless drivers. [see below]

(Administration - Hardware Drivers - Broadcom STA wireless driver for
the Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driverfor use with Broadcom's
BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, andBCM4322- based hardware)

Next, I used the update manager to perform the recommended updates.
After updates the system suggests a restart to finalize installation of
said updates. This is where the problem of hanging at the command line
for 1.5 to 2 minutes takes place. I am able to do startx and log into
the system GUI immediately but without wireless option. However, if I
do this I *still* will be logged into the GUI by the system after the
1.5 to 2 minutes. This happens while I am already within the GUI! I
will see the screen flash black - then a circular mouse image spinning -
then the Ubuntu desktop with wireless keyring prompt - everything
working properly at that point. The next time I shut the computer down
or restart the computer, the command line prompt comes back with a 1.5
minute to 2 minute delay before going into the GUI. It is worth noting
that this command line prompt can sit without any keyboard input and
move into the GUI by itself after the 1.5 to 2 minutes have surpassed.

I have recreated this bug now three times. I was relieved to find this
forum suggesting this is a bug and not something I am doing wrong.

Questions:

Is there currently a known fix for this bug?

If no fix is available, is there a work around?

My current workaround thought is that I simply not install the
recommended updates. It is NOT until I install the recommended updates
that this bug begins.

I am a new Ubuntu / Linux user loving the education! I am excited about
this open source project and hopefully my experiences somehow will
influence someone with more knowledge to fix this problem. I am a new
computer science student at IPFW in Fort Wayne, Indiana! Hopefully
within a couple years I am able to contribute more to this project.

Long live Open Source!

[Bug 501971] [NEW] After shutdown, and after re-login, amarok lost its voice, there is no audio.

2009-12-31 Thread Ken Johnson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: amarok

I installed phonon-4.4.3 a couple of days ago and amarok worked. It was
fun working thru the playlist because everything worked as in order.
Then, I shut the computer down completely ... amarok would not work when
I turned the computer back on this AM.

to no avail. The system is working but there is no audio to it.

[Bug 409962] Re: poppler 0.11.2 produces blank pages with cups

2009-12-18 Thread Ken Corbin
This may have come back. My daughters HP Deskjet 3650 has been printing
blank pages ever since I switched her to Ubuntu from Windows. Running
karmic with cups 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1 and libpoppler 0.12.0-0ubuntu2.1. We
never had an earlier version of Ubuntu installed on this system, so I
can't tell if it used to work sometime in the past. The printer still
works perfectly when we hook it up to a Windows system.

[Bug 497902] Re: Support Application Indicators

[Bug 500202] [NEW] Doubled directory

2009-12-24 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: soundconverter

If you have a source directory set up like this:

Alice in Chains/Facelift/(flac tracks)
Alice in Chains/MTV Unplugged/(flac tracks)

then the result of a conversion is:

Alice in Chains/Facelift/Facelift/(ogg tracs)
Alice in Chains/MTV Unplugged/MTV Unplugged/(ogg tracs)

The album name gets repeated. This seems to only occur when the source
directory has multiple albums under it.

I have the options set to copy the results into another dir and I have
checked the create subfolders. The Metadata in the .flac files is
correct. The source filestructure is artist/album/tracks. I am adding
by drag-n-drop from the artist level.

[Bug 484137] Re: Notified of subscription request but no way to accept it.

2009-12-02 Thread Ken VanDine
The authorization requests appear in the messaging menu, just like an IM
does. You have to click on that to get the Approve/Reject dialog.
Currently there is a problem with those dialogs getting raised properly
though, they stay below the current window. This can make it appear as
if selecting the authorization request in the messaging menu does
nothing.

That bug is
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/392153

This isn't really a dupe of that, we should probably distinguish
authorization requests from login and message events. We will keep it
on the radar for Lucid.

[Bug 479597] Re: HP Mini 311 - Does not always boot

2009-12-04 Thread Ken Drachnik
After multiple failed reboots was able to boot and blacklisting ssb seems to
have solved the booting problem. I downloaded the backports and the STA
driver, but wireless is still not recognized. On reboot hardware driver states
that the STA is activated but not currently in use. Seems this may be a bug
in that the Broadcomm crypto was not updated and doesn't work with Karmic. See
bugs 395630 and 484643 as well. (problems with 2.6.31.14 kernel as well) Have
submitted the issue.
In the meantime it boots fast and very reliably and I am using a Belkin usb
wifi stick that just worked automatically.

[Bug 496505] [NEW] X goes nuts and sometimes crashes when starting mplayer

2009-12-14 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This is a strange one and not easily reproducible. It only occurs if
gnome-do is running in docky mode AND I bring up a video by double
clicking on it. I have gmplayer set as my default video player for
nautilus.

Sometimes when in this situation, the X screen starts flipping like an
old TV and becomes completely non-responsive. CTRL-SHIFT-F1 sometimes
takes me to a virtual window where I can at least interact with the PC
locally. However, I can not kill the X process - even with a kill -9.
I can't even shutdown cleanly. The shutdown process halts. I am
forced to hard reset.

Most of the time I have no problems. It is as if each time bring up a
video in mplayer then close it down - some resource is being held. The
more I do this, the more likely I am too encounter this bug. I am in
the middle of ripping all of my DVDs to play on a media player so I am
looking at video all the time.

[Bug 497021] [NEW] provide a fallback for lack of application indicator support

2009-12-15 Thread Ken VanDine
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

The libappindicator patch to rhythmbox doesn't provide any fall back to
the original status icon. We should detect for interest from the
indicator (if it is present) and if not, fall back to displaying the
status icon.

[Bug 497062] [NEW] Accelerometer picked up as default input on MacBook

2009-12-15 Thread Ken Hawkins
Public bug reported:

On a default install of 10.4 Lucid on a 4,1 MacBook the internal
accelerometer was being picked up as an input in addition to the
trackpad. This gave the mouse a wobble effect and also caused the
mouse to automatically recenter.

Thus the system was unusable.

This also happened when running the live CD.

I used the x64 CD install.
