[Bug 537451] Re: Confusing comments in /etc/default/ntpdate

2012-07-24 Thread Kevin
I respect the package maintainers decision to let this one slide but the
comment in /etc/default/ntpdate is confusing. You shouldn't have to read
the code to figure out that if /etc/ntp.conf doesn't exist that a
different NTP server will be used. Thanks for the clarification via
Launchpad.

This directory was just created earlier on in the installation, so the
fact that it doesn't exist now probably indicates a problem with your
hard disk. If the disk is getting old, it might be worth looking into a
replacement.

[Bug 192784] [NEW] OpenOffice auto correct notification is a persistant annoyance.

2008-02-17 Thread Kevin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Short version: Love the autocorrect in OO 2.3.0, don't like the
autocorrect notification icon.

Longer version:
OpenOffice 2.3.0 autocorrect notification (light bulb life preserver ring)
comes up all the time, doesn't disappear after a word or two of typing and
there isn't an easy option to turn off the notifications, not the autocorrect.
Even more aggravating is that I spend most of my typing time in OpenOffice at
the bottom of the page where the notification comes up and it won't go away
even if I type right up to it and under the icon. Please make this go away.

Thanks,
  Kevin

[Bug 200000] [NEW] small QT program removes desktop panels

2008-03-08 Thread Kevin
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure if this is a QT widgets bug, or an ubuntu bug. I can report
this to QT (trolltech) if you want.

But anyways, running the sort file in the bad sort folder (which is in the
sort_bug.tar.gz archive) from the terminal (by running ./sort) will make my
screen flicker and then remove my panel (I only use one).
Running the program by double clicking on the sort file works fine.

The good sort folder (which is in the sort_bug.tar.gz archive)
contains a sort file that always works fine.

The difference between the two files is that the bad one has source
files with capital letters, such as SortDialog.cpp and the good one
has all lowercase letter file names (of course the #include headers are
changed accordingly).

Note that the buttons aren't supposed to do anything.

My point is that disappearing panels seems to be a common problem and this
simple program, which actually came from the QT manual, shouldn't create this
kind of behavior (Ubuntu shouldn't be this fragile).

You can recompile with make if you delete the sort file. You can do a full
recompile if you delete all the files that don't end in a .h or .cpp, delete
the file that begins with _ui, and then run
qmake -project
qmake sort
make

[Bug 189834] [NEW] Broadcomm wireless utility doesn't work as well as it could.

2008-02-07 Thread Kevin
Public bug reported:

This is documented well in Question #22913
(https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/22913). Long story short
is that Ubuntu 7.10 doesn't handle BCM94311MDG WLAN cards out of the box
but the instructions at http://invaleed.wordpress.com/2007/11/20
/install-bcm94311mcg-wlan-mini-pci-ubuntu-710/#comment-8087 have worked
for me twice and by rough count on the web site another 40 people.

I don't have the technical chops to figure out what isn't working with
the default firmware cutter and restricted drivers and what is working
with this but it works and is repeatable which should make it close to
being fixable. With the exception of getting the microcode distributed
which is a licensing issue but that is a different issue.

Thanks,
  Kevin

[Bug 223764] Re: Java applets are working only one time from launching Mozilla Firefox 3 b5...

2008-05-14 Thread Kevin
I got similar behaviour. Same system java version.
When I open an applet it is shown correct. Then after reloading or opening a
new applet/java-window it is most times grey (sometimes its shown normal).
The problem can be solved the same way like the compitz-swing-problem:

export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit

But I don't like this workaround, because it just looks ugly and is
buggy.

Java 5 is working correct in Firefox. And in Epiphany even java 6 works.
So I'm using Epiphany for all java applets...

I have a Compaq Presario C756CA Laptop (which is in the C700 family),
which has an Intel 3945 a/b/g wireless, Integrated Intel 3100 graphics
chipset (using whatever free driver installs by default in Ubuntu),
Samsung LCD display, Syntek Integrated Web-camera, Alps touch pad
(running apparently with the synaptic driver), SATA 160 gb hdd, 2gb ram,
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6 ghz CPU. I have upgraded the firmware on the laptop
to the latest, which I believe is F31 (released in March 2008).

Running Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy), fully updated as of May 24, 2008. ( Linux
2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:23:42 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux ).
This problem fails out of the box. I also get the same behavior on
Fedora 9 RTM out of the box.

Suspend to RAM works the first time. Resuming is fine, the first time.

Suspending to RAM a subsequent time completely freezes the machine.
Can't switch to terminal window. Have to hard reboot (press and hold
power or pull battery)

Hibernate works most of the time, although half of the time it comes
back and says Hibernate failed (After I've already resumed from the
hiberfile ;))

Symptoms on second resume: No video. No image. No LCD Backlight; I
believe webcam cycles on and off once and hard drive accesses once, Caps
lock key is NOT flashing (kernel doesnt seem to be panicking). Does not
respond to terminal switches (ALT+F1, F2, F3, etc), makes no difference
if X is running or not.

I have tried some of the HAL fixes on
http://people.freedesktop.org/~hughsient/quirk/index.html . No success.
I have tried competely disabling everything USB using RMMOD, disabling my Intel
3945 wireless using both RMMOD and editing the suspend modules list, no success.

sudo pm-suspend adequately reproduces the problem, various --vesa
options seem to make no difference, although I'm game to try a specific
combo if someone has one that works for this config. I tried using the
sleep.sh script in ubuntu, it produces the same behavior.

I will attach my HAL list, a DMESG report on first suspend, and a DMESG
report on the second suspend (which requires a hard reboot), although
I'm not sure that the second DMESG dump is good.

[Bug 234519] Re: Compaq Presario C700 series (C756CA) always freezes the second time when resuming from Suspend to RAM

2008-05-24 Thread Kevin
I forgot to mention that it looks in the DMESG dump like it might be the
UVCVIDEO as well as the wireless, but it DOESNT * seem * to be because
of either of them. I did an RMMOD on both (I only mentioned disabling
the wireless in the original report), and it still died. Since UVCVIDEO
magically restarts itself even though its module was removed, I killed
the entire USB modules. At that point UVCVIDEO was definitely dead
(webcam wouldnt restart), and problem STILL exhibits itself (still
freezes on second resume)

[Bug 235392] [NEW] Compaq Presario C700 Series (C756CA) Network Disable Indicator always indicates disabled

2008-05-27 Thread Kevin
Public bug reported:

I have a Compaq Presario C756CA (from the C700 series).

This laptop features a hardware network WiFi disable switch that sits
above the keyboard. It is a standard click button -- press it once, the
wifi card is disabled. Press it again, it is enabled.

The button works correctly -- network wifi will disable and enable at
the click of the button.

However, the button is illuminated -- and there is another wifi
indicator on the front led status panel which mirrors this button
indication. It should be BLUE when the Wifi is enabled, and ORANGE when
it is disabled.

In Hardy, WIFI Enabled indicator is ALWAYS disabled (aka, displays
ORANGE) -- never indicates enabled (BLUE).

[Bug 235393] [NEW] Battery runtime remaining / recharge time indicator doesnt switch for different batteries

2008-05-27 Thread Kevin
Public bug reported:

In Hardy (Ubuntu 8.04)
Linux hellspawn 2.6.24-17-generic #1 SMP Thu May 1 14:31:33 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

I have two batteries; one is a 12 cell, one is a 6 cell. They are both
Hewlett-packard mfgr ID'd.
Ubuntu was installed with the lower cap battery present.

gnome power tray applet always reports based on lower cap battery, even
when double cap battery is installed -- including after complete reboot,
even after a complete charge on the 12 cell. It never re-calculates
available battery life or battery charge time when switching batteries
-- possibly because they're both HP's? (maybe it checks to see if the
battery is different by mfgr?)

Not sure what information is needed to post here, so will post HAL dump
for now. Feel free to inquire for more. I will supply if able.

Hi Rich,

I was using one of the pre-release Feisty builds, either herd 5 or the
beta. At this point I do not remember which. I have the current Feisty
installed, and it is fully updated. I am not receiving this error any
longer.

Regards

Kevin

Also happens with wma files, however both MP3s and WMA files play fine in
Rhythmbox 0.10.0. Tried playing Divx files in Totem, sound is ok but video
doesn't show
unless in full screen mode.

Ran totem from terminal window.. eventually. No error messages. Nothing
unusual in system log.
If the track is paused and rerun from start it plays perfectly. So it is
only when a file is
run initially as if totem was having difficulty decoding the track. Strange.

[Bug 61381] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashes at login

Same problem here on up to date Feisty.
Uncommenting the following had no effect for me.

However, unchecking 'Enable Software Sound Mixing (ESD)' on the Sounds tab of
Sound Preferences seems to have solved the problem.
Gnome now starts quickly with no errors.

[Bug 61381] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashes at login

2007-05-06 Thread Kevin
Follow up...
Turned off Software Sound Mixing seemed to work at first. (No longer hung for
several minutes starting Gnome, no more error message)
Other strange things started happening though.. Clicking the shutdown button on
the panel caused it to freeze. Had to kill gnome panel.

Eventually I kill -9'd NetworkManagerDispatcher. Haven't had any problems
since. Even after a reboot.
Seems to be network related, as others have stated the problem went away while
not near a wireless access point.

[Bug 238111] Re: after install, can't make it work

2008-07-17 Thread Kevin
I'm experiencing the same problem. I can get to the start page
(http://localhost/ocsreports) which drops me into an authentication page
that is looking for a db login/password/host which will then run the
OCS Reports Setup which I assume will set up the database. No matter
what I put in for login's and passwords they are never accepted.

No authentication means no DB setup which make this install broken.

Web interface is provided by ocsinventory-reports.

[Bug 238111] Re: after install, can't make it work

2008-07-18 Thread Kevin
I have a work around.

There are two authentications that go on here. The first is for MySQL on
your server and that is the one with the pretty web interface you see in
all the documentation. You will need a root MySQL user login or another
login with similar privileges here.

The second login window that comes up that just asks for a login and password
but no host is at htaccess password. For some reason this authentication is not
working. To work around this edit /etc/ocsinventory/htpasswd.setup and change
the only line in the file from:
  admin:*
To:
  admin:

This will clear the admin password and you will be able to authenticate
correctly with the login: admin and a null password.

This is not optimal but it will get you through the install.

Another hitch worth noting is that it doesn't select a language by
default and all of the screens will have no text. Choose the appropriate
flag in the upper right of the index.php page and you'll get the text
your looking for.

I often have the installer stop during the setup phase. The message says
that either a file failed to download or ... etc. I quite Adept and load
Konsole and run 'desktop:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a'. I often have to
force Adept updater to quit to do this, otherwise the database is
occupied. Sometimes when I finish with the dpkg run in the terminal and
return to Adept, there are additional downloads, that don't seem to
download, but are already here, and still need to be installed. Other
times, there are new downloads, I guess that may just be timing as y'all
put stuff up.

Oh, I also have gotten a number of Adept start-up failures, and the
error system comes up, but there are 'There was an error commiting
changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the
commit would break packages. ' error messages, and no report.

In this instance, I had to quit Adept Updater and then ran I ran dpkg which
returned:

I then returned to Adept, and there were 10 more packages to upgrade,
all of which were already here. Then after 13% of completion on the

with the flash plugin? How/Where does that get reported?

[Bug 293062] Re: timeout error on multipartition iPod eject

2008-11-21 Thread kevin
Using 8.04 I managed my iPod using amarok. I had the eject command
tweaked to allow non-root user. At 8.10 this does not work anymore,
amarok fails to eject. So I switch to my desktop and right-click the
icon. This works, though results in error message above.

[Bug 220957] Re: Fails to see blank CD/DVDs for writing

2008-11-21 Thread kevin
I have been following this bug since a very similar thing has happened to me.
I'm running Kubuntu Hardy Heron with all updates applied. Kernel 2.6.24-21 is
in place. As recently as 2 - 3 weeks ago I was able to burn cd's and dvd's
with no problem. Could play dvd's that I burned, didn't try commercial dvd's.
Audio cd (both my burns and store bought) played perfectly well.
Some upgrade within that time period has completely futzed the cd/dvd system.
Putting in blank cd's or dvd's no long results in the blank cd/dvd dialog
popping up. Using k3b to set up and audio cd or dvd iso works up to the point
where it requests that blank media be inserted. Doing so doesn't result in the
media being recognized. At this point I haven't tried to play other dvd's or
cd's as I use this computer primarily for burning dvd's from my video camera.
The cd/dvd burner is a Lite-On but I don't know the model right now. I'm at
work, machine is at home. I plan to upgrade to Interpid over the weekend, so
perhaps that will fix the problem, but I can state without any reservation,
that Hardy worked fine up until very recently at which time some update must
have broken the sub-system responsible for detecting blank media.

If you would like to see some dumps from my system, let me know, I'd be
happy to supply them before I do the upgrade.

[Bug 292761] Re: laptop screen flickers

2008-12-21 Thread Kevin
Hi,

I managed to get the new driver installed, and tried to get GDB to
function. The driver is not the answer. I was unable to complete this
task in linux, though I tried a couple of times. I will say that it
changed somewhat, I now get a red screen as the Xserver goes down, or
looses contact. So, from Windows here are my latest SystemLog, XorgLog,
and KernelLogs.

Please let me know if I can send something else.

Regards,

Kevin

[Bug 234519] Re: Compaq Presario C700 series (C756CA) always freezes the second time when resuming from Suspend to RAM

2008-12-24 Thread Kevin
Andres, I did actually include a DMESG dump from the first successful
suspend and subsequent (incomplete/failed) suspend. They are attached at
the very beginning of the thread (first two posts), and seem to be what
that DebuggingKernelSuspend article you link to are trying to get at..

Quoting the linked article:

You have about 3 minutes to start this boot process before the
information saved in the RTC gets corrupted.

Start a console and enter:

dmesg dmesg.txt

.. unless I'm missing something (which is entirely possible) that's what
I've provided with the original bug submission.

That said, this issue (and lack of resolution thus far) has forced me
back to Windows, so I'm unable to provide any additional information to
this bug report. However it looks like there are lots of other people
with similar problems -- as well as a few confirmations that this
happens with 8.10 as well -- so should you require more information
perhaps they could provide it?

cheers.

[Bug 217868] Re: rdesktop freezes shortly after successful connection

I've been experiencing the same problem connecting to my Windows servers
with RDP on Ubuntu. I don't know if Ubuntu does bounties on bugs but I'd
be willing to pay for some developer time to get this fixed.

[Bug 217868] Re: rdesktop freezes shortly after successful connection

2009-03-07 Thread Kevin
I take a bit of my previous comment back. If I use Kvpnc as my VPN front
end I don't run into the lockup problems. I'm disappointed that network
manager VPN front end doesn't seem to be setting this up correctly. Now
I'll put money behind getting the network manager VPN front end fixed so
I don't have to kludge around it like this.

[Bug 292263] Re: Xorg crashes on intrepid ibex and restarts

2008-12-08 Thread Kevin
Hi,

I was unable to run a proper backtrace. gdb attach pid# caused my
system to lock-up totally. Power off needed to reboot. Verifiable, did
it several times. Never the less here is my Xorg.log file, hoping it
will help.

This crash can happen as often as in the middle of the restart, to 30
seconds later, to sometimes I get a whole half hour. Doesn't seem to be
related to a particular program, though Firefox seems to get it more
than others. It might just as well be Shi Shen Sho or FreeCell.

Regards,

Kevin

[Bug 292788] Re: False Monitor Detection

2008-11-16 Thread Kevin
I am also having the same issue. Thinkpad R50e, had the issue when I
just did a distribution upgrade. I have since re-installed fresh from
and 8.10 live cd. For me, I am getting a 'logout' back to the login
screen, and a normal re-login thereafter. I have set the system to not
require a password on X crash, and I get my network back, and Amarok
reconnects to the radio station it was playing. This is happening as
often as every ten minutes or so, but varies widely. I have not been
able to note anything consistent about what was actually happening. It
has done this without any input or other activity at all.

I will subscribe to this thread. Please let me know what I can do to
help.

Regards,

Kevin

[Bug 316558] [NEW] Unable to SSH RDP to remote servers while on PPTP VPN

2009-01-12 Thread Kevin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-pptp

Networking isn't my best suit so I'm going to sketch out the problem and
if there is additional information needed let me know.

Running Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) essentially stock, network-manager + PPTP
VPN's will allow me to ping and nslookup remote servers over the VPN but
I can SSH, RDP, or browse the web over the VPN connection. Using KVpnc
this problem goes away but other problems surface. I would prefer to use
network manager to manage my VPN connections but that isn't an option at
this point.

I don't know where to start with diagnostics for this problem but I know
that this functionality is automatic on Windows and OS X computers
connecting to this VPN.
