Looks like the culprit is the last line of the script: pkcon remove

[Bug 1469069] [NEW] Two-way request for debug mode status should itself use a lenient timeout

2015-06-26 Thread Marcus Tomlinson
Public bug reported:

Upon determining whether a scope is in debug mode, the scope must be
located via the registry. The registry rightfully allows the scope to
startup slowly, but the originating locate() call enforces the regular
timeout.

This is causing premature timeout errors when trying debug a scope on
the desktop.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1470750

This reboot issue seems to occur on the nexus but not the bq. The bug
above describes behaviour experienced on the arale and bq when
uninstalling a scope, so that leads me to believe the reboot does not
occur on arale either.

Basically, upon uninstalling a scope we see the scope registry process
CPU usage shoot up. On the nexus, after a short time of eating the CPU
like this, the phone reboots. If however, I stop the registry process
somewhere between the uninstall and where I'd expect a reboot, the phone
does not reboot.

Therefore, I believe if we fix bug #1470750, we fix this one.

The CPU spike is triggered upon uninstalling a scope. A single install /
uninstall cycle reproduces this issue.

Ok, we've narrowed this issue down to a single change we made to delay
notifying the dash when a scope is removed. Makes sense that it was
triggered upon uninstalling a scope. A fix is in the pipeline.

The process timeout and locate timeouts in debug mode are currently

I'm seeing this in Vivid -> Wily too, but in a Xen VM, not an LXC
container. None of the above suggestions worked, it logs the same errors
as Serge.

[Bug 1502285] Re: api should provide translated "no network" and "no location" results

2015-10-18 Thread Marcus Tomlinson
There is an info() method on SearchReply and PreviewReply objects. This
method informs the shell that some non-fatal, warning condition has
occurred during the query. This method takes a OperationInfo argument
that can be configured to describe a number of warning conditions via an
enum such as: NoInternet, NoLocationData, ResultsIncomplete etc. You can
call this method multiple times for multiple warning conditions, for
example: NoInternet+ResultsIncomplete.

Now as far as I can see by the shell plugin code, we are relaying this
information to unity8 via the scope's status() getter, but I don't think
it has been decided on yet how the dash would deal with these
conditions. I'm adding unity8 to the affected projects.

[Bug 1502282] Re: "unknown" connectivity status problematic

2015-10-19 Thread Marcus Tomlinson
I think the bug here is that you are seeing an Unknown status at all.
That shouldn't happen. The shell sets the connectivity status before it
dispatches queries, so you should only get Connected or Disconnected.
Unknown is really more of an uninitialised state.

Could you please point me to the source code of a particular scope
effected by this Unknown connectivity status issue.

[Bug 1349252] Re: crypt(3) lacks Blowfish support

2015-10-16 Thread Marcus Bointon
For password hashing, bcrypt *is* better, by design. There's absolutely
no ambiguity here, the consensus is fully in favour of bcrypt. Hashes
like SHA512 are general purpose, designed to run really fast, whereas
bcrypt is explicitly for secure hashing and is deliberately, tuneably
slow. There are many articles on the subject, here are some (from *5
years ago*!):

http://codahale.com/how-to-safely-store-a-password/
http://blog.codinghorror.com/speed-hashing/

Frankly I'm shocked this is even being questioned. Without bcrypt in
libc, all apps that rely on libc for hashing (I've just run into it with
dovecot in 14.04) are not as secure as they should be. Hasn't this been
flagged by the Ubuntu security team?

2015-10-16 Thread Marcus Bointon
Please ignore my last comment. bcrypt is undoubtedly better than a
single round of SHA512 as a password hash (what I was on about), but
SHA512 is not the same thing as the multiple rounds used in SHA512-CRYPT
that's in libc and in Ulrich's paper.

[Bug 1502282] Re: "unknown" connectivity status problematic

2015-10-21 Thread Marcus Tomlinson
The discussion has derailed somewhat from the original issue, please
continue this elsewhere.

Coming back to this particular bug, we only provide the statuses
Connected and Disconnected to the scope from the shell. The Unknown
status is an uninitialised state and should never reach the scope.
Seeing that Kyle can no longer reproduce this, I'm setting the bug
status to Incomplete.

Looks like we are missing some null checks in JsonCppNode. We have this
in only one of the get_node() methods but not in the other 2 overloads.
Looking at the crash report it is definitely one of the get_node()
methods attempting to dereference a null root node. I've linked a branch

[Bug 1496875] Re: smartscopesproxy uses a lot of CPU with bad internet

2015-09-18 Thread Marcus Tomlinson
Ok so I can reproduce this issue flawlessly by connecting to a
subscription hotspot nearby and refreshing any remote scope (In fact
there seems to generally be high CPU usage spikes coming from the
smartscopesproxy process even on a working wifi spot). This is on the
mako with:

build: 113
channel: ubuntu-touch/rc-proposed/bq-aquaris.en

I then upgraded to:

build: 115
channel: ubuntu-touch/rc-proposed/bq-aquaris.en

and didn't see the issue anymore. The smartscopesproxy process seemed to
work fine with no excessive CPU usage. However, I did see a completely
new issue:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/android/+bug/1497167. Perhaps
this masked smartscopesproxy's usage? Not sure.

Then I flashed my BQ with the latest image from ubuntu-touch/rc-proposed
/bq-aquaris.en:

current build number: 127
device name: krillin
channel: ubuntu-touch/rc-proposed/bq-aquaris.en
last update: 2015-09-18 04:54:49
version version: 127
version ubuntu: 20150918
version device: 20150821-736d127
version custom: 20150821-887-33-32-vivid

I tried the same test and did not experience any excessive CPU usage
from smartscopesproxy. I checked the version of libunity-scopes3 on both
the mako 113 and krillin 127, and both are at
0.6.19+15.04.20150724.3-0ubuntu1.

So to me this looks to be a mako specific problem. The same version of
smartscopesproxy is on both devices, yet on the mako it seems to eat the
CPU like crazy.

[Bug 1497167] [NEW] Binder_2 process using 100% CPU on mako

2015-09-18 Thread Marcus Tomlinson
Public bug reported:

I just bootstrap flashed the latest image from channel=ubuntu-touch/rc-
proposed/bq-aquaris.en onto my Nexus 4 (mako):

current build number: 115
device name: mako
channel: ubuntu-touch/rc-proposed/bq-aquaris.en
last update: 2015-09-18 08:08:10
version version: 115
version ubuntu: 20150918
version device: 20150911
version custom: mako-1.1

Using top I see the process "Binder_2" sitting at 100% CPU usage
constantly. No amount of waiting or rebooting seems to rectify the
problem. I see nothing interesting in syslog, but this is the output of
logcat:

phablet@ubuntu-phablet:~$ /system/bin/logcat
- beginning of /dev/alog/main
D/libEGL ( 5655): loaded /system/lib/egl/libEGL_adreno.so
D/libEGL ( 5655): loaded /system/lib/egl/libGLESv1_CM_adreno.so
D/libEGL ( 5655): loaded /system/lib/egl/libGLESv2_adreno.so
I/Adreno-EGL( 5655): : EGL 1.4 QUALCOMM Build:
I0404c4692afb8623f95c43aeb6d5e13ed4b30ddbDate: 11/06/13
W/Adreno-EGL( 5655): : EGL_BAD_CONTEXT

I then reflashed my phone with channel=ubuntu-touch/rc-proposed/ubuntu
and there was no Binder_2 CPU issue with that image:

current build number: 243
device name: mako
channel: ubuntu-touch/rc-proposed/ubuntu
last update: 2015-09-18 08:31:30
version version: 243
version ubuntu: 20150918
version device: 20150911
version custom: 20150918

Just a note for those who work on this:

There are currently 8 remote scopes in total:
Reddit
Yahoo! Finance
Open Library
Wikipedia
eBay
Amazon
7digital
The Weather Channel

[Bug 1522393] Re: [scopes] Request: Allow to navigate to favorite scopes by clicking the dot

2015-12-17 Thread Marcus Tomlinson
@Felix, sometimes a "Won't Fix" status being slapped on your bug can
come across a little dismissive, just want to let you know that we
really do appreciate the report :) In fact, I personally agree with your
suggestion to be able to navigate scopes via the dots, its definitely
intuitive.

As our UX team has pointed out, we're working on a new design that
should make navigating scopes a lot cleaner, so we will have to wait and
see how that plays out. Thanks for helping make Ubuntu better! Look
forward to seeing some more good suggestions like these.

[Bug 1586412] Re: Remote scopes are very often empty

2016-06-06 Thread Marcus Tomlinson
This issue actually turned out to be primarily due to a change made in
unity-scopes-api from json-cpp to json-glib, whereby the json returned
from the SSS was being mistreated in some places.

Thanks to Pawel's fixes to unity-scopes-api and Facundo's fix to the
eBay scope, all remote scopes are in working order again.

[Bug 1594880] Re: Location settings missing in scope until reboot

2016-06-22 Thread Marcus Tomlinson
Hey Kyle, after allowing location, how long did you wait until
refreshing the scope?

It can sometimes take upwards of 10s from allowing location access for
the scope to start receiving any location data (hence, until then, you
won't see the "Enable Location" setting either).
