[Bug 285654] Re: f-spot error with italian install ~/Photos no such file or directory

2008-11-03 Thread Martin Reiche
Same problem with Ubuntu 8.10 final (amd64 and i386).

F-spot complains that photos directory does not exist. It should look for
Bilder as I am from Germany and so use german localisation.
I also can't change the default import directory of f-spot. It's just greyed
out.

Another thing (different from this bug): I have no sidebar with the tags
anymore. Maybe this is related?

Hi,
I think I have at least found a workaround (after someone else pushed me in the
right direction): if you do

sudo su
echo enable,0xff /proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey

both buttons generate acpi events and show the OSD.
But now: how to make it permanent?

[Bug 337283] [NEW] Laserjet 4 5M: Printout not in the middle of paper but a bit off to the right side

2009-03-03 Thread Martin Reiche
Public bug reported:

If I try to print something to my LaserJet 4 (LaserJet 4 - CUPS+Gutenprint
v5.2.0-rc1) or my LaserJet 5M (LaserJet 5 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.0-rc1) then
the resulting printout is not in the middle of the paper but a bit off to the
right side.
If I try then the more generic PCL-driver (for LaserJet 4 = LaserJet PCL 4/5;
for LaserJet 5M = LaserJet PCL 6 CUPS) the printout is perfectly in the
middle of the paper.

Is there maybe something wrong/different within the ppds?

I'm on Ubuntu 8.10 with all updates as of today installed.
I attached two scaned example printouts from the LaserJet 5M only as the
problem looks same with the LaserJet 4.

[Bug 302596] Re: Evince doesn't print all content of pdf-file to PS-printer but to PCL-printer

2008-12-11 Thread Martin Reiche
1) Yes. I have the same printer installed twice with different drivers
PCL -- HP LaserJet 4 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.0-rc1
PS -- HP LaserJet 4/4M 600DPI Postscript

2) Distinguish: I have no idea how to distinguish if a PDF will print ok
or not. Sometimes there is missing text and sometimes there are missing
pictures and so on.

Is there maybe another program to open and print PDF-files? So I could
try to reproduce the problem.

[Bug 302596] Re: Evince doesn't print all content of pdf-file to PS-printer but to PCL-printer

2008-12-11 Thread Martin Reiche
I tried xpdf-reader a second ago and could not print as my PC is
connected via jet-direct-card as my PC doesn't have a parport and I
don't know how to connect to the printer via lpr as it is the only
option in xpdf-reader.

But I have found xournal (GTK+ application for notetaking, sketching
and keeping a journal using a stylus. It can also be used to add
annotations to PDF files.) and I don't know why but it prints the page
I added as orig. to this report perfectly (but slow as hell).

So the problem seems to be related to evince (or something related with evince
and printing) as xournal prints ok.
But xournal uses an other looking printing-dialogue so maybe it makes things
differently when printing, uses an other library?

I installed Acroread from Medibuntu and it prints perfectly with PCL.
With PS it prints nearly perfect. The only difference I can see between
those to printouts is that the PS-print does not print those brackets
from the formular of the bottom slide from page 11 from the orig. PDF I
attached to this report.

I should mention that all my tests relate to this one page 11 of the
orig. PDF as that is one of those sites the printer has problems with.

- Opensuse 11.0 Live-CD: kernel panic with surroundview enabled in BIOS.
- Ubuntu 8.04.1 Live-CD: kernel panic with surroundview enabled in BIOS.
but
- Knoppix 5.1 Live-CD: NO kernel panic with surroundview enabled in BIOS!
So with a kernel 2.6.19 (Knoppix) it seems to run without kernel panic.

[Bug 305165] Re: M3A-H/HDMI: Kernel Panic when using surroundview (enable Hybrid-Crossfire)

2009-01-12 Thread Martin Reiche
I compiled the latest stable kernel and the problem still persists.
So my question is: what can I do so someone will look at the problem? I read at
kernel.org that it would be helpfull to compile kernel with serial-console
support and that one can even use a parport-printer to send the output from
screen to. I have a parport-printer but no idea how to set it up to work with
serial-console. So maybe someone can help?
The bug was also reported here:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12352
It looks like it does not help to send pictures of what one can see on screen
so it may be helpfull to set up this serial-console-thing but how?

[Bug 305165] [NEW] M3A-H/HDMI: Kernel Panic when using surroundview (enable Hybrid-Crossfire)

2008-12-04 Thread Martin Reiche
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-generic

In order to use Hybrid-Crossfire with Windows I have to enable surroundview in
BIOS. But if I enable surroundview and start Ubuntu 8.10 (amd64) I get a kernel
panic.
So: I have two graphic-adapters in my machine (onboard and discrete hd 3470) in
order to use Hybrid-Crossfire. It doesn't matter which card I set as primary
adapter in BIOS as long as I not enable surroundview. Without surroundview both
cards will work with linux. If I choose the onboard-graphic it will work
(discrete card still in machine but disabled because sourroundview is not
enabled)) and if I choose the discrete card it will also work (as long as
surroundview is not enabled).
Ubuntu itself has all updates.
Maybe someone can help?

If I try to use the 8.10 live-DVD I get a kernel panic too. It doesn't
matter if the DVD contains the i386- or the amd64-image.

Hmmm... to get this straight: I would like to use Hybrid-Crossfire in Ubuntu
but I know that it does not work. So at the moment I would be happy if Linux
would just start and doesn't do a kernel panic :-)
If more infos are needed: just ask for it :-)

likely to see any further work. On such systems EXA should be enabled.
Without making changes to xorg.conf 9.10 RC starts per default with XAA
enabled. If XAA is not maintained anymore this should be changed soewhere?

[Bug 438021] [NEW] epiphany-webkit ignores icedtea6-plugin

2009-09-28 Thread Martin Reiche
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-webkit

It seems that the icedtea6-plugin will be ignored by epiphany-webkit in
Karmic with system complete up2date.

Sites to test:
http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
http://www.heise.de/security/dienste/browsercheck/tests/java.shtml

With firefox it does work well.

Flash (via gnash) does work also so it does not look like there are
problems with plugins in general.

[Bug 459753] Re: No notification on IBM Thinkpad X31 (Karmic)

2009-10-25 Thread Martin Reiche
I know that this is no forum but may I ask if compiz works for you (at
all)?

If I look at your screenshot it looks pretty much like my Desktop after I tried
the 9.10 RC live-CD with disabled compiz.
Even worse: when enabling compiz I get artifacts all over my Desktop.

As I have an IBM X31 too so this might be related.

I will attach my screenshots.

BTW: i made no changes in the live-CD session at all... only tried it
with and without enabled compiz.

[Bug 416001] Re: Notification and similar dialogs are displaying corrupted after update on Karmic

2009-11-02 Thread Martin Reiche
As I had the same problems I tried to modify my xorg.conf. What helps
was to disable DRI2 and enable DRI. My working xorg.conf for my radeon
7000 (M6LY):

Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
Option AGPMode 4
Option AGPSize 32
Option DRI true
Option DRI2 false
EndSection

RenderAccel is XAA per default.

Working means that notifications and compiz work as expected.

[Bug 355155] Re: Clocksource tsc unstable leads to lockups in Ubuntu Jaunty

2009-06-21 Thread Martin Reiche
After I had the same problems as descripted in this report I decided to
give jaunty a last chance: a complete newinstall. Before I had the 64bit
Version of Ubuntu 9.04 (cleaninstall) and it crashed as reported without
any for me obvious reason several times the day. Now I tried the 32bit
version with the same problems in the begining. But: at some point It
looked for me that my wifi-card maybe the problem as it had problems to
connect to my AP. Dmesg gave me something like phy0: tx overflow. So I
removed it from my PC and no problems since 6 hours while using the PC
as with the old installation. It's not that long but at least a begining
:-)

For my PC:
AMD Athlon64 4850e
Asus M3A-H/HDMI with onboard grafic and discrete ATI RadeonHD 3470 (Hybrid
Crossfire) fglrx 9.6
Allnet all0271 Wifi-Card -- removed
Ubuntu 9.04 32bit ext3
Linux bruno 2.6.28-13-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 2 07:57:31 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/Linux

All in all I have not installed all software that I had installed before
in the 64bit-installation but that seems to be no problem as Jaunty
32bit crashed even without all the software (as possible sources of
errors) installed.

Maybe that helps as if I remember right someone else had the idea with
some sort of a wifi-problem before.

[Bug 337283] Re: Laserjet 4 5M: Printout not in the middle of paper but a bit off to the right side

2010-10-28 Thread Martin Reiche
I printed the CUPS Testpage (now with 10.10) and I think I found the problem.
The Mediendruckgrenzen (don't know the translation) are different. I think it
translates to something like the area where something can be printed.

PCL (HP LaserJet 5M - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.6):
Mediendruckgrenzen
0.14 x 0.17 bis 8.12 x 11.53 Zoll
4 x 4 bis 206 x 293 Millimeter
Treibername
STP01545.PPD

PS (HP LaserJet 5M Foomatic/Postscript)
Mediendruckgrenzen
0.25 x 0.50 bis 8.01 x 11.19 Zoll
6 x 13 bis 204 x 284 Millimeter
Treibername
POSTSCRI.PPD

I wonder why the same printer has different Mediendruckgrenzen. Maybe this
should be corrected.
If you ask me, the PS one is the correct one as it prints in the middle of the
paper.

2010-11-01 Thread Martin Reiche
I've changed the ImageableArea from the gutenprint PPD to the values from the
PS PPD but that does not help.
Both CUPS Test Pages show

Mediendruckgrenzen
0.25 x 0.50 bis 8.01 x 11.19 Zoll
6 x 13 bis 204 x 284 Millimeter

but the PCL printout is still not centered.

[Bug 567313] Re: Lucid: empathy voice chat stuttering sound

2010-04-22 Thread Martin Reiche
Ok. I think I found the problem: per default there is the package
telepathy-haze installed. After deinstallation of telepathy-haze voice
chat over Jabber does work without stuttering!

So it seems the problem is with telepathy-haze and not empathy. Maybe
someone can change this in this bug-report? TY.

[Bug 550401] Re: thinkpad X3x series suspend and hibernate hang

2010-04-29 Thread Martin Reiche
I installed 10.04 (i386) final today (clean install) and had the same
problem on my X31. After trying a bit I found the following:

- disabled KMS + disabled compiz + disabled metacity-compositor -- suspend and
hibernate both work
- disabled KMS + enabled compiz + disabled metacity-compositor -- complete
garbled screen (no further testing)
- disabled KMS + disabled compiz + enabled metacity-compositor -- suspend and
hibernate both work

So... wild guess: its a problem with enabled KMS and compiz.

[Bug 574037] [NEW] Lucid: pulseaudio causes many wakeups while playing music

2010-05-02 Thread Martin Reiche
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

While playing music in rhythmbox or totem pulseaudio causes many CPU-
wakeups as can be seen with powertop. When rhythmbox is on but not
playing any music the CPU-wakeups are much lower.

I will attach the output from 'powertop -d' while
- rhythmbox playing music (playing)
- rhythmbox not playing music but loaded (idle)

As I can't remember ever seen such behavior in previous versions of
Ubuntu I think this is a bug.

[Bug 597821] Re: me-tv segfaults

2010-06-23 Thread Martin Reiche
As I have no idea what to do to get a backtrace I googled and found this site:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace
I tried the steps in Generation on that page but that does not work. Symptoms
like in this post
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/me-tv/+bug/395430/comments/5
appear.
So I am following your advice in your comment below on that page (enable
apport).
Hopefully that does help :-)

If something else should be done instead please tell me.

So long I will try it as descriped above. Could take a while as the segfault
happens to me yesterday once and today a second time but I don't know how to
provoke it (except running me TV in fullscreen).
We will see.

[Bug 594371] [NEW] Lucid: Totem missing to suggest gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad when playing encrypted DVD

2010-06-14 Thread Martin Reiche
Public bug reported:

After a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 (64bit) Totem is unable to play any DVD.
So I installed libdvdread4 and executed
/usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
After that I fired up totem and started a DVD. Totem starts searching for the
missing codecs and suggests only DVD-Quelle (DVD-source?) and not the missing
plugin gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad. At least I think that is the missing plugin
because after I had Rhythmbox looking through my Music-folder it installed some
plugins... one of them gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad. After that I started Totem
again and the DVD plays without any further problems.

So: is this intended behavior of totem or a bug? I don't know for sure?
I think totem should suggest the right missing plugins... else totem
should just suggest nothing ;-)

[Bug 595136] [NEW] Lucid: Totem + DVB-T = Could not receive message. (Timeout while waiting for server response)

2010-06-16 Thread Martin Reiche
Public bug reported:

In order to watch TV per DVB-T with totem I installed totem-plugins-dvb-daemon.
After totem started and I selected Watch TV a setup tool for DVB-T opened and
created a channels_DVB-T.conf in .config/gnome-dvb-daemon. After that I closed

[Bug 588713] [NEW] Lucid: possibly memory leak in CUPS?

2010-06-02 Thread Martin Reiche
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

I tried 2 times to print a PDF (~7 MB = 225 pages) to my HP LaserJet 5M
per evince and with the PCL-driver (not Postscript).

- The first time (pages 1-225) at some point the PC slows down to a
crawl with much disk activity until Gnome more or less died. Died means
Gnome didn't response anymore and I could at some point only see the
silhouette of the programs that where open... means: I could see where
my programs have been but could not see their content. From that first
try I will attach the relevant part from my syslog.

As I needed the PDF to get printed out and wanted to try to reproduce
the problem I started...

- The second time (pages 141-225). This time with the
Systemüberwachung (systemmonitor?) on my desktop so I could see what
happens to my RAM. I will attach a screenshot which will show the slowly
growing amount of RAM used while printing. This time syslog shows
nothing of interesst. Gnome just froze and I had to reboot.

Maybe interessting details:
Ubuntu 10.04 64bit
My PC has 2GB of RAM and 2,3 GB swap.
The PDF in question is a 7MB monster with a copied dissertation -- means:
someone copied the paperpages and put the resulting images in that PDF. I can't
upload it as I had to pay for it and I think that the copyright owner would not
like to see me uploading his work to launchpad :-)
The first print job (pages 1-225) was about ~30 MB in size. The second one
(pages 141-225) about ~10 MB. At least that was shown to me after clicking on
the icon for the print jobs in queue.
My LaserJet has 22MB RAM in total.
I tried to print 2 pages from the PDF to one paper page to cut down the paper
usage.

[Bug 588713] Re: Lucid: possibly memory leak in CUPS?

2010-06-02 Thread Martin Reiche
The third time I tried to print the last needed pages (185-225). This time I
tried to print from my IBM X31 with 1GB of RAM and a 10.04 32bit clean install
(I forget to mention that the before mentioned PC was updated from Beta 1 till
today). Also I could see the RAM usage rise to the celling of 1GB the Notebook
is equipt with it does not make any problems. Print job finished and RAM was
freed in the end.
As I have not enough paper to try the whole process from that notebook I can't
try to reproduce it there.

So maybe it's just a problem with that special sort of PDF and it is
totally normal to consume so much RAM while printing a big PDF? Never
observed that behavior before but I also had not looked at it either.

[Bug 564471] [NEW] Lucid: Plymouth looking garbled after removal of radeon-kms.conf on IBM X31 (radeon 7000)

2010-04-16 Thread Martin Reiche
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plymouth

With yesterdays (15.04.2010) updates the file /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf
was removed.
Sideeffect of this removal was:
- before this update I had no plymouth at all but some ASCII-art which looked
like what should look like a plymouth boot screen. As far as I know this was
intended for video-adapters with 32MB video-ram.
- after yesterdays removal of radeon-kms.conf it looks like I have working
plymouth boot screen but at start up it looked somewhat garbled (see attached
photo). However... after some time of booting the screen normalizes and looks
like how plymouth should look. Some time means some seconds before I can see
gdm.

My Notebook is an IBM X31 with a radeon 7000/ M6 LY graphics adapter with 16MB
of video-ram.
The X31 runs Lucid Beta 2 with all updates.

[Bug 574037] Re: Lucid: pulseaudio causes many wakeups while playing music

2010-08-22 Thread Martin Reiche
I installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic and powertop
reports 32,7 wakeups now when playing some music with rhythmbox. So it
is better. Don't know if it was better in previous versions.

The 10.10 RC has still this problem. At least with the Live-CD.
Can't comment on Mainline-Kernel as my X31 runs Debian now.

[Bug 654264] [NEW] Gameserver reports modified maps -- wrong md5sum of *.ogz?

2010-10-03 Thread Martin Reiche
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sauerbraten-data

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 (amd64) and installed the following packages from
maverick
- sauerbraten_0.0.20100728.dfsg-2_amd64.deb
- sauerbraten-data_0.0.20100728-1_all.deb
in order to play the latest sauerbraten without any problems.

Problem is that some servers check somehow (maybe md5sum) if you use modified
maps and report them so admins could for example kick you for using modified
maps.
So after installing those two packages an admin of psl.sauerleague.org
(gameserver) told me to not use modified maps. But as I had the packages just
installed before I went playing I couldn't have edited them... not even by
accident.

I checked the md5sum of the map I was accused to have modified and compared the
md5sum to the map included in the tar.bz2 which could be downloaded from
sauerbraten.org
- sauerbraten_2010_07_28_justice_edition_linux.tar.bz2
and they don't match.

- *.tar.bz2
md5sum shipwreck.ogz
4c0c8d6fec4ff1389bf958a683c931e0 shipwreck.ogz
- *.deb
md5sum shipwreck.ogz
f0354e7fa6b4561328e45333628c2d04 shipwreck.ogz

There are some more maps where the md5sum don't match.

So it would be cool if the package could be checked. The *.ogz files can be
found in:
sauerbraten/packages/base/
