[Bug 900901]
I have the same version of gcc 4.6.1 ($ gcc --version gcc (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.1-9ubuntu3) 4.6.1) and I've compiled wine-1.4-rc5 with and without additional flags. The version compiled without flags doesn't work with Steam in-game overlay, but the second one works. I've used those flags: CFLAGS=-O3 -pipe -fno-strict-aliasing -fomit-frame-pointer -ffunction- sections -fdata-sections -maccumulate-outgoing-args -mno-push-args -freorder-blocks-and-partition LDFLAGS=-s This means that the gcc bug is still present, because the old gcc 4.5 ($ gcc-4.5 --version gcc-4.5 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.5.3-9ubuntu1) 4.5.4) doesn't need any extra flags for working overlay. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/900901 Title: Steam overlay does not work due to GCC-4.6 issues To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/wine/+bug/900901/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1199877] Re: unity-panel-service memory leak and 100% CPU usage
I upgraded to 13.10 in time of Final Beta release and I observed a much higher use of RAM compared to 13.04. This is very bad to the point that my SWAP which is 4 GB (6 GB of DDR2 RAM) becomes filled sometimes and is always used in more than 2 GB after couple hours. I've noticed that unity-panel-service uses large portions of RAM in one case it was 1 GB but also I'm observing today unity-sope-home using 390 MB. Also running the command mentioned earlier: watch -n 0,5 ps -o rss= `pgrep unity-panel` I see that the value goes up and up and it doesn't stop. [Bug 1199877] Re: unity-panel-service memory leak and 100% CPU usage
The worst impact on unity-panel-service have programs that are heavy in menus department. People already mentioned Gimp, Inkscape, LibreOffice and Sublime Text 3 and I would also add Geany to that list. You launch any of this programs and the unity-panel-service increases it's memory usage and hovering on the menus makes things even worse. I discovered something that most likely decreased RAM usage of unity- panel-service in my case. Since I upgraded to 13.10 some of my indicators (Weather-Indicator and Syspeek) displayed only part of their menu. I've finally found a way to bring back the missing menu items and apparently it had a big impact on u-p-s because now in worst moments it's about 80 MiB in Gnome System Monitor and before it would be as high as 200 MiB. https://answers.launchpad.net/weather-indicator/+question/237754 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1199877 Title: unity-panel-service memory leak and 100% CPU usage To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-power-consumption/+bug/1199877/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity Global Menu
The patch provided by Ryan Koesters works when applied to Unity in 13.10. I've build Unity and then I had a new GSettings option. When I checked that menubar-always-visible the global menu became visible all the time for all programs. This should be available in 14.04 LTS for the people that don't like the default hiding of global menu. Of course it would be even better if this could be toggled from Appearance settings instead of dconf-editor. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/682788 Title: Improve Unity Global Menu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/682788/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity Global Menu
@Ryan Koesters: I've build today Unity and unity-control-center with your patches on Ubuntu 14.04 both worked without problems. I had to manually specify the files to patch unity-control-center because I probably used wrong -p option: patch -p1 To install the packages I had to remove gnome-control-center-unity because it was in conflict with this new unity-control-center. This is screenshot of u-c-c with always show the global menu bar option. http://ubuntuone.com/1JH80LwIm4Su2OM6gkYK5i I had troubles with building the current Unity for 14.04 but not because of your patches so I used the daily build from Unity daily stack preparation PPA. https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-unity/+archive/daily-build Your patch applied successfully but there were some offsets. [Bug 1257505] Re: Create Unity Control Center so can remain on old GNOME Control Center version
I've recently build unity-contol-center on my own to test a patch that adds option for always showing the global menu (it also needs patched Unity). https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/682788 (that patches are attached here) When I tried to install those packages there was one conflict with gnome-control-center-unity package so I removed it and installed u-c-c without removing other gnome-control-center packages. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1257505 Title: Create Unity Control Center so can remain on old GNOME Control Center version To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/activity-log-manager/+bug/1257505/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1257505] Re: Create Unity Control Center so can remain on old GNOME Control Center version
After installing todays packages from PPA I observed several problems. The icon in the launcher still doesn't launch u-c-c but gnome-control- center. The dimensions of the u-c-c are not as they supposed to be and the window is wider but the height remains unchainged from the dafault. I couldn't use Privacy and Online Accounts settings. [Bug 1257505] Re: Create Unity Control Center so can remain on old GNOME Control Center version
Now the icon launcher starts unity-control-center but if I launch System settings... from the indicator there are two icons on the launcher. I've seen on the mailing lists that translations have been imported but apparently not all of them. I checked with my native language which is Polish and u-c-c doesn't have all the translated texts that are in g-c-c. I've made three example screenshots for each of the Control Centers. http://ubuntuone.com/51mNx0hjWTVxWKJtmmNwq4 There is also a screenshot which shows that when I search in Unity Dash for Privacy settings I get not only the Unity settings but also Gnome. [Bug 1257505] Re: Create Unity Control Center so can remain on old GNOME Control Center version
I purged the PPA today and reinstalled it again because you asked for it in mailing list. Normally the translations are there for this labels in System settings... All settings Appearance but in unity-control-center I don't see the Polish labels. Also all the labels in Appearance settings still display in English language but normally they are translated. There is one label in Brightness and blocking settings still in English. The rest of the labels display properly in Polish except Text Entry and Backup (which looks different than in 13.10) but that isn't translated normally. The settings for Online Accounts and Privacy finally work but clicking on the latter results in window becoming to wide and it also crashed.

[Bug 1032276] Re: [nvidia] Graphics freeze when I close or minimize a window
I too have this bug and I can confirm that it's related to Compiz drawing the desktop (Nautilus show desktop disabled). I have it in 13.04 and 13.10 running in VirtualBox and also booting the ISO image with Grub entry created by grml-rescueboot. It happens with NVIDIA drivers (tested on 13.04) and Nouveau, LLVMpipe and VirtualBox drivers (tested on 13.10). The easiest way to reproduce this bug is to open terminal (it must be the only visible window). Then type nautilus -q which will temporarily kill Nautilus (desktop will be rendered with Compiz). The last step minimize or close terminal window. This results in animation hang and entire desktop hang. Unity doesn't respond on keys being pressed (Super, Alt (Tap), Alt + F2 or F10). Public bug reported: Now that the Bug #1118838 has been fixed in Saucy I think that there is still one thing that should be changed for Ambiance. When you right click in Firefox on a webpage the menu background is white the same goes for it's tabs. Also right click menu on any window decoration has white background. To make those backgrounds black: 1. Open /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc with your prefered text editor 2. Search for line containing: style menu 3. Add this after: = dark 4. [Bug 911706] Re: USC relies on NM to be online, can't force online if not using NM
USC runs that ping test only when Network Manager service is disabled. I can disable upstart job for NM (it's upstart so rcconf won't help here) and then it doesn't interfere with USC and Ubuntu One online status (the connection is managed by WvDial). End users shouldn't be requiered to do all of that just to get working two default Ubuntu programs. Most of them won't even know why this things don't work. I myself use Synaptic but when I launched USC and the install buttons were dimmed I was very confused and I didn't know why it's like that. The exact steps are as follows (connected through WvDial): - Network Manager service is enabled and running - open terminal and use this command software-center 21 | tee USC_network_manager.log - USC install buttons are dimmed and there is information about no internet connection - there was no ping test USC_network_manager.log - Network Manager service is stopped - open terminal and use this command software-center 21 | tee USC_only_wvdial.log - USC is online and all the functions work - there was a ping test USC_only_wvdial.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/911706 Title: USC relies on NM to be online, can't force online if not using NM To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/911706/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 911706] Re: USC relies on NM to be online, can't force online if not using NM
The problem is that no other programs require to disable Network Manager service to function properly. I've mentioned it before all of the browsers (besides default Firefox) work when connected through WvDial and NM service running. Thunderbird works and downloads mails without interference in it's offline settings. Transmission have no problems with downloads nor do qBittorrent or wget, gPodder, Steam (native and Wine), Desura / Desurium (native and Wine). This means that the only programs that don't work when internet connection is managed through something other than Network Manager (and the service is running, which is default setting) are the ones installed with every Ubuntu. USC has the ping status checker but it's of no use because it only runs with NM disabled. Ubuntu One and Firefox don't have any kind of online status checker and they simply assume that if there is nothing in NM then user doesn't have internet connection. How can anybody think that this things are right is beyond my imagination. Ubuntu Software Center and Ubuntu One have serious design flaws if they stupidly rely on one program for providing online status information. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/911706 Title: USC relies on NM to be online, can't force online if not using NM To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/911706/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Funny thing that there are multiple programs that can be used to connect the type of internet dial-up I'm using for Windows. There are also problems for Windows users to get auto-reconnect working the tutorials for configuring it look more complicated than WvDial configuration (atleast from my perspective because Windows users think differently). http://translate.google.pl/translate?sl=pltl=enjs=nprev=_thl=plie=UTF-8eotf=1u=http%3A%2F%2Fjdtech.pl%2F2011%2F08%2Faero2-%E2%80%93 -automatyczne-wznawianie-polaczen.html (Aero2 - Automatic resume calls) Programs mentioned in the article (including the comments section): HUAWEI Mobile Partner (which also has a Linux native version) Top_NetInfo AutoConnect aero2auto-reconnect I assume that people using those programs on Windows should have the same kind of problems that Ubuntu gives when not using the system integrated solution.
[Bug 911706] Re: USC relies on NM to be online, can't force online if not using NM
Why this bug has status Fix Released when it's clearly not resolved. Obviously Ubuntu developers think that users should search for half-assed workarounds on forums and bugtrackers. I'm using wvdial for my connection because it's a better option. My internet disconnects once an hour passed and then I have to make new connection (it's a free internet and this is one of it's limitations the other is 60 KB/s max). NetworkManager in this case requiers baby sitting. While wvdial connects automatically. With NM I have to put out the modem than plug it in and make a connection. http://dug.net.pl/tekst/197/aero2_z_modemem_huawei_e3131/ http://translate.google.pl/translate?sl=pltl=enjs=nprev=_thl=plie=UTF-8eotf=1u=http%3A%2F%2Fdug.net.pl%2Ftekst%2F197%2Faero2_z_modemem_huawei_e3131%2F (the same site as above translated with Google) Ubuntu Software Center isn't the only program with this bug. Ubuntu One Client also doesn't work with wvdial until I run sudo stop network-manager (it doesn't sync files). USC and UbuntuOne are the only programs that rely solely on Network Manager and that's wrong. I don't have to do anything for other programs to use them online. WvDial connection works for: Chrome / Chromium Opera and Opera Next Konqueror and rekonq Transmission and qBittorrent gPodder (Podcast client) Steam native and Wine Desura / Desurium native and Wine Gnome System Monitor (displays all internet related information) WiMP service like Spotify (it's a program made in Adobe AIR) Nuvola Player Thunderbird JDownloader and this list could go on and on. I'm also sure that all mentioned programs wouldn't have problems if I would connect through Wicd or PPPoE but of course Ubuntu Software Center and Ubuntu One are better because they use the one and only Network Manager.

However when running Heaven benchmark in fullscreen 1920 x 1080 Unity was slower than pure Compiz. Unity Gnome Classic (Compiz) 8.1 13.2 203 333 3.9 8.3 17.429.1 This was true for every time I run Heaven 3.0 in this screen resolution.
