[Bug 263160] Re: hardy / ibex - raid5 - ata#: hard resetting link
Pretty fed up with people saying this could be so many different issues. So much so that i finally decided to risk my data to prove it read the following. ***___This has got to be the card / chipset / sata_mv driver._*** Short and simple version of my issues: - This does not depend on drive types - Appears to be caused by MV88SX6081 chipset - Could be a problem in SATA_MV driver - I need replacement controller suggestions Details to all non believers (it’s not a power / hardware issue): I moved 5 of the 7 drives to my onboard controller (have 6 sata ports on the mobo, last was used by the system drive). Left 2 of the western digital drives on the MV88SX6081 8-port SATA II: - sdg - sdh After the advice of some through email, I unplugged everything that wasn't needed. They assumed that it could have been power giving the number of drives I had in the machine. What was left on a tx750w corsair power supply: - mobo (c2d, 4gb ram) - 7 sata raid drives - spread across multiple power supply rails - 1 sata system drive - Super Micro SAT2-MV8 (MV88SX6081 8-port SATA II) - intel pcie 10/100/1000 network card Then I replaced the sate cables 1 more time with old cables I knew worked. I also threw in the brand new controller card as well (have a few spares lying around). I brought everything up and upgraded to: Then I started to rebuild the raid. Everything went fine, no freezes. **This was the first indication that this only happens under heavy load on multiple ports as has been brought up before. So then I started copying data over. About 180GB's the card hard reset both of the drives attached to it and knocked them both out of the raid. **This was also significantly different from before when I was utilizing all the ports as it seemed to work great for quite some time, it wasn't until I was well into the process that the card finally gave up. See the attached dmesg and /var/log/messages. This is the 2nd time I’ve had this card degrade my raid and almost give me a heart attack. The cards are going in the trash at this point. I'm open to suggestions as to possibly replacement. I don’t need a hardware raid card, just a decent controller with great *nix support and lots of ports. ::sigh:: I don’t know who to contact but this is the end of the line for me with this controller and hopefully my issues. Attempting to get my data back as we speak with 2 failed drives in a raid 5... wonderful times. dmsg of the event: [ 1061.040118] md: recovery of RAID array md1 [ 1061.040120] md: minimum _guaranteed_ speed: 1000 KB/sec/disk. [Bug 255217] [NEW] 100% cpu after imap error
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird Whenever my mail server sends an unexpected error, I get 100% cpu usage in Thunderbird until I dismiss the error dialog. The text of the dialog is "mail.blah.blah has sent an incorrect or unexpected message. Error Code: -12263". I realize my isp's imap mail server very likely has some issues, but Thunderbird shouldn't peg the cpu until an error dialog is dismissed. I see this problem almost daily. I'll often have several of the dialogs stacked (I have multiple imap accounts). This has been happening since at least Edgy and still happens in Hardy. Required info: Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1 Release: 8.04 mozilla-thunderbird: Installed: 2.0.0.16+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 Candidate: 2.0.0.16+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 Version table: *** 2.0.0.16+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-updates/main Packages 500 http://security.ubuntu.com hardy-security/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 2.0.0.12+nobinonly-0ubuntu1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages Expected Result: CPU should not be pegged when an error dialog. [Bug 255217] Re: 100% cpu after imap error
One additional comment. When I only have one such error, the cpu normally does not peg. It's when all four accounts have stacked errors does the cpu peg. Only one error dialog shows at a time. Once you dismiss the first, the next pops up. -- 100% cpu after imap error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/255217 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 263160] [NEW] hardy / ibex - raid5 - ata#: hard resetting link
Public bug reported: Running 7 disk raid 5 array with the following card: SCSI storage controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. MV88SX6081 8-port SATA II PCI-X Controller (rev 09) file system is XFS. Trying to do a 'cp' from the system drive (IDE, XFS) to the raid would constantly lead to the process stalling (state: D+) and leading to a cold reset. I believe network transfers are also suffering from this. Hardy wasn't reporting _any_ of these errors in dmesg or /var/log/messages. Upgraded to Ibex to try and help track down what was going on and got the following _when_ transferring to the raid. dmesg: [11285.918535] ata9.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x1 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen [11285.918567] ata9.00: cmd 61/03:00:49:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/40 tag 0 ncq 1536 out [11285.918568] res 40/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x4 (timeout) [11285.918619] ata9.00: status: { DRDY } [11285.918635] ata9: hard resetting link [11286.420039] ata9: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) [11286.460065] ata9.00: max_sectors limited to 256 for NCQ [11286.520054] ata9.00: max_sectors limited to 256 for NCQ [11286.520059] ata9.00: configured for UDMA/133 [11286.520077] ata9: EH complete [11286.520119] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdd] 976773168 512-byte hardware sectors (500108 MB) [11286.520132] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdd] Write Protect is off [11286.520134] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdd] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 [11286.520154] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdd] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA [11326.988529] ata8.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x1 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen [11326.988554] ata8.00: cmd 61/03:00:49:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/40 tag 0 ncq 1536 out [11326.988555] res 40/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x4 (timeout) [11326.988606] ata8.00: status: { DRDY } [11326.988623] ata8: hard resetting link [11327.500037] ata8: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) [11327.580053] ata8.00: max_sectors limited to 256 for NCQ [11327.657199] ata8.00: max_sectors limited to 256 for NCQ [11327.657202] ata8.00: configured for UDMA/133 [11327.657207] ata8: EH complete [11327.657257] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdc] 976773168 512-byte hardware sectors (500108 MB) [11327.657272] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdc] Write Protect is off [11327.657273] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdc] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 [11327.657296] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdc] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA [11377.938532] ata7.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x1 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen [11377.938557] ata7.00: cmd 61/03:00:49:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/40 tag 0 ncq 1536 out [11377.938558] res 40/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x4 (timeout) [11377.938608] ata7.00: status: { DRDY } [11377.938624] ata7: hard resetting link [11378.440037] ata7: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) [11378.520056] ata7.00: max_sectors limited to 256 for NCQ [11378.600065] ata7.00: max_sectors limited to 256 for NCQ [11378.600068] ata7.00: configured for UDMA/133 [11378.600073] ata7: EH complete [11378.600120] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] 976773168 512-byte hardware sectors (500108 MB) [11378.600133] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off [11378.600135] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 [11378.600155] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA [11711.718523] ata9.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x1 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen [11711.718548] ata9.00: cmd 61/03:00:49:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/40 tag 0 ncq 1536 out [11711.718549] res 40/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x4 (timeout) [11711.718600] ata9.00: status: { DRDY } [11711.718616] ata9: hard resetting link [11712.220041] ata9: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) [11712.260058] ata9.00: max_sectors limited to 256 for NCQ [11712.320057] ata9.00: max_sectors limited to 256 for NCQ [11712.320066] ata9.00: configured for UDMA/133 [11712.320072] ata9: EH complete [11712.320112] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdd] 976773168 512-byte hardware sectors (500108 MB) [11712.320125] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdd] Write Protect is off [11712.320127] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdd] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 [11712.320148] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdd] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA [11849.328524] ata7.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x1 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen [11849.328549] ata7.00: cmd 61/03:00:49:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/40 tag 0 ncq 1536 out [11849.328549] res 40/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x4 (timeout) [11849.328600] ata7.00: status: { DRDY } [11849.328617] ata7: hard resetting link [11849.830037] ata7: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) [11849.910070] ata7.00: max_sectors limited to 256 for NCQ [11849.990053] ata7.00: max_sectors limited to 256 for NCQ [11849.990057] ata7.00: configured for UDMA/133 [11849.990069] ata7: EH complete [11849.990109] sd 6:0:0:

[Bug 109845] Epiphany "Download link" always opens destination folder
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: epiphany-browser This is new behavior with Feisty. Edgy did not behave this way. If you right-click a link in Epiphany and select "Download link", it will download and the target folder will open automatically when the download completes. This happens even when the folder is already open. If the download path is the desktop, no folder is opened. I created a new user with no existing config files and this behavior still exists. Steps: 1) Configure epiphany to download to a custom path. Disable the open option (this does not seem to make any different) 2) Browse to a web site in Epihpany with download links (I was using attachments from gmail) 3) Right-click the link and select "Download link" from the context menu --> when the download completes, the target folder is opened Expected Result: The target folder never opens ** Affects: epiphany-browser (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Epiphany "Download link" always opens destination folder https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109845 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 19552] Re: Crash after firefox is opening a new window (when it should open the new URL in the same window/tab) - No More Crash Report Please!
This happens to me about once a day. It is usually seen when cnn.com reloads in one of my open tabs. I see the tab reloading, then the cnn web site pops up in a frameless window (the frame becomes blank). If I close the frameless window, Firefox crashes. If I right click the cnn tab and select Close, the tab closes and the frameless window also closes. I can continue browsing with other open tabs. I have had this issue for at least a year with both Dapper and Edgy. ** Attachment added: "crash file" http://librarian.launchpad.net/6424730/_usr_lib_firefox_firefox-bin.1000.crash.gz -- Crash after firefox is opening a new window (when it should open the new URL in the same window/tab) - No More Crash Report Please! https://launchpad.net/bugs/19552 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
In addition to comment 1647 ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1/comments/1647 ) I'd like to shed some additional light that may help in debugging: http://glyphobet.net/blog/essay/140 . >From my personal experience, I have seen similar things happening with the whole bunch of linux kernel USB 2.0 problems -- see e.g. comment 594 ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux- source-2.6.20/+bug/88746/comments/594 ) for bug 88746 ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/88746 ) . Please note that this comment was added more than three years after the initial bug was filed! ( After living for several years with this bug, and a lot of digging, I have finally realized how complex the situation was, and for me it seems to have almost gone -- two more years later and with a backported kernel, but from a new user's point of view -- no one even have _tried_ to explain all the difficulties and intrinsic details for USB 2.0 support in the linux kernel! All we've got from Canonical was "declined / won't fix" ) As a more general thing -- if then, back in the times of 7.10, the installation procedure for Ubuntu to an average computer looked like "click a few times" -- then around 9.04 it was more like "click a few times and then fix one or two minor things". Now it is a nightmare ( "plug and pray", "and prepare to spend from days to weeks on the forums, digging into the problem(s), testing patches, etc" ). I have stopped even trying anything but LTS releases long ago, and still wait for every next upgrade with fear and trembling. [Bug 61235] Re: USB mass storage stops working after a while
I am seeing this problem in one or another form since ~2006, and it looks like it will be with us for a while. My understanding is that there may be a *number* of issues with USB 2.0 + that end with more or less similar symptoms, producing lots of confusion. A number of workarounds exist, the above is just one of them; basically it all goes down to some way of limiting the connection speed, after what the USB connection seems to survive; the most robust ( and the worst in the terms of efficiency ) is switching down to USB 1.0 : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount/USB#USB_2_Issues http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_USB_2.0 Please note that for the most of the distributions we can't just do "rmmod ehci_hcd" anymore and have to "unbind" the driver from the usb hub -- or even from a specific port : http://lists.en.qi- hardware.com/pipermail/discussion/2011-August/008508.html ( The obscure numbers behind this magic are described here : http://www.makelinux.net/ldd3/?u=chp-12-sect-1, here : http://www.mail- archive.com/linux-usb-us...@lists.sourceforge.net/msg16895.html and here : http://www.linux-usb.org/FAQ.html#i6 ; this also contains a great introduction in sysfs: http://www.reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html ) At USB 2.* level, limiting the speed normally solves most of the issues except for some "intellectual" hardware that likes to go offline to save power etc and never wakes up ; one of these is changing the "max_sectors" value: http://www.linux-usb.org/FAQ.html#i5 ; it may have to do something with setting the proper buffer size as well ) in old days one have had to either write an udev rule ( see the link above ), or add the device into "unusual devs" and then recompile the kernel: http://www.phildev.net/linux/usb-unusualdevs-notes.html, http://lxr.free-electrons.com/source/include/linux/usb_usual.h, http://lxr.free-electrons.com/source/drivers/usb/storage/unusual_devs.h, http://yarchive.net/comp/linux/quirks.html ; nowadays things are probably better : http://ftp.dei.uc.pt/pub/linux/kernel/people/gregkh/usb/2.6/2.6.28/usb- storage-make-the-quirks-module-parameter-writable.patch, http://lxr .free-electrons.com/source/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt#L3444 and one can pass certain parameters to the kernel at the boot time : http://lxr.free-electrons.com/source/Documentation/kernel- parameters.txt#L9, e.g. http://anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=49138 . Back to limiting the connection speed. My favorite way to go is via cgroups ( http://linux.oracle.com/documentation/EL6/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux-6 -Resource_Management_Guide-en-US.pdf, http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/cgroups.txt, http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/cgroups/devices.txt, http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/servers-storage-admin /resource-controllers-linux-1506602.html, etc ) along with a related udev rule ; this seems to work well in most of the cases. I will skip a number of related workarounds to keep this comment at a reasonable size ; returning back to the "intellectual" hardware, there are at least two quirk parameters to mention: "autosuspend" and "old_scheme_first" . First allows us to disable auto-suspending: http://lxr.free- electrons.com/source/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt#L3407, http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW- TO:Suspend_and_wake_in_Ubuntu#Disable_Usbcore_Autosuspend, http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/usb/power-management.txt, e.g. : http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Leadtek_WinFast_DTV2000DS#Losing_1_tuner ; the second one is normally advised as a random shot when there is "some unknown bad magic happening", and I list it only for some very rare occasions ; here is a link: http://www.linux-usb.org/FAQ.html#ts10 . hth, /t13 PS. In some specific case, reading around the above links may also help ) -- -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/61235 Title: USB mass storage stops working after a while To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/61235/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 322331] Re: Hard disk clicks and increasing Load_Retry_Count
Had the same problem and disk model, tried -S0 (didn't help), then -B255 : Load_Retry_Count has indeed slowed down (~twice in 30 minutes), but then Load_Cycle_Count started growing ; I have returned the values to -B254, and, weird enough, now they grow both, though slowly again . -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/322331 Title: Hard disk clicks and increasing Load_Retry_Count To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support/+bug/322331/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 123631] Re: vncviewer -listen allows connections from UltraVNC SC clients, but doesn't display the window
Hi, at least in my case the problem was that the "SingleClick" VNC server reported the protocol version 3.16 and the client's top version was the infamous 3.8 ; unfortunately, the client thinks that 3.8 is the maximum version that would be available ever and behaves (in)appropriately. In my case the solution was fixing the code to use protocol version 3.3 when uncertain and using "hextile" for the encoding parameter ( i.e. replacing ">= 8" to "== 8" in the file 'rfbproto.c' at line 241 ) : 1. sudo apt-get install build-essential xutils-dev # and may be sth else; basically you'll need make & gcc sudo apt-get build-dep xtightvncviewer 2. wget http://www.tightvnc.com/download/1.3.10/tightvnc-1.3.10_unixsrc.tar.gz tar xzvf tightvnc-1.3.10_unixsrc.tar.gz patch -p0 = 8" comparison near line 241 with a simple check for "== 8" ; (b) there are two more ">= 8" entries in the protocol file, I didn't explore that, as the listen mode was all I wanted . ** Patch added: "change "server_minor >= 8" to "server_minor == 8" at line 241" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tightvnc/+bug/123631/+attachment/3705529/+files/rfbproto.patch -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/123631 Title: vncviewer -listen allows connections from UltraVNC SC clients, but doesn't display the window To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tightvnc/+bug/123631/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 537241] Re: My computer updates are very slow since latest dpkg update
We use a PXE environment to deploy user laptops based on Ubuntu. The installation process is a real pain due to this issue. On Hardy I cannot achieve persistence, I follow the tutorial on wiki (LiveUSBPenDrivePersistent) and the Ubuntu starts but finish on a initramfs and as I a novice I have to reboot. AFAIK and reading this looong conversation looks like as someone else downgrade something and the persistent on USB thumb or HD fails in the final release after this guys fixed the persistent problem. The problem is still there, because on www.pendrivelinux.com for ubuntu gutsy only convert the USB on Live Ubuntu but without persistence, and in some other forums and articles everybody ask about persistence unsuccessfully or we need to edit some files as http://www.ryancloke.com/ubuntu-804-hardy-heron-live-usb-how-to/";> this link shows (for me it doesn´t work neither) and on somewhere else the line mentioned in the link mount ${cowdevice} -t ${cow_fstype} -o rw,noatime /cow || panic "Can not mount $cowdevice on /cow" is treated differently, because the solution from ryan is remove mode=775 and the solution from that site was defining another variable $cow_cowopt=rw,noatime,mode=775 (or 755 I don´t remember) and after the if before that line I have put the persistence before the else (I'm searching again the web page if I found it I put the link) and in the line mentioned by Ryan I have to replace after the -o option for the new variable. In that page explain that the problem isn´t the mode instead something isn't there that avoid that persistence option were taked in account. This behavior has always existed, AFAIK, but you imply that in Feisty that background color was synchronized with your GDM choice. Is that the case? That color you see between login and Gnome is the root X window, which exists "below" the GDM and typical Gnome Desktop levels. So you will see it "poke through" between the time GDM exits and Gnome finishes loading. To change it by hand, you can edit the file /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default and change the BACKCOLOR variable defined around line 61 of that file. It is default set to "#dab082", which is the camel color you describe. To make it black instead, set it to "#00". I will continue to look into this and see if it syncs to my GDM choice on a Feisty box. ** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: None => gdm Assignee: (unassigned) => Q Hartman Status: New => Confirmed -- login background color is hardcoded https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/132833 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 129928] Re: [Gutsy] after this mornings updates gnome took >5minutes to load
Was updatedb running again? Updatedb updates the search database that "locate" uses, it is not directly related to Gnome. It seems odd that it would be running at boot time consistently. Re: [Bug 129928] Re: [Gutsy] after this mornings updates gnome took >5minutes to load
I'd wager that the poor performance is the combination of updatedb running and having only 256MB of RAM. Updatedb is creating a lot of IO and consuming a fair amount of RAM, possibly causing swap, which in turn creates more IO, which hurts the performance of the system. I'm not sure of the best way to handle this, especially not as a "bug", given that it seems as if your computer is simply being asked to do more than it can easily handle, and is slowing down as a result. Disabling updatedb is the "obvious" solution, but that will have some unintended consequences. This thread in the forums talks about disabling it, which should serve as a starting point for you, though I don't recommend disabling the running of updatedb. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=6279 Perhaps setting updatedb to run weekly instead of daily would be a good middle ground? if you move the "slocate" and "find.notslocate" files in "/etc/cron.daily" to "/etc/cron.weekly" that will make it run less often and should alleviate the problem. I agree with your assessment that blaming the machine is not a way to fix the bug, hence my comment about not really knowing the best way to handle it. On one hand, your machine is rather low-spec by today's standards, which is probably why this was overlooked. On the other, as you pointed out, it does match the minimum spec stated for Ubuntu, and therefore this behavior should not be there. I don't want us falling into the trap where minimum spec means "It works, but it's not really usable" like so many other software producers use. -- -Regards- -Quentin Hartman- -- [Gutsy] after this mornings updates gnome took >5minutes to load https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/129928 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

If you want to disable the automatic database updates and run it by hand, that is fine. Most people don't want to to worry about it. To run it by hand, simply execute "sudo updatedb" and enter your password. That will manually update the database. Another option you have is to set the updatedb process to run at another time. Is there a time when your computer is usually on, but you are not using it? By default, the daily cronjob runs at 6:25 AM. If you edit the "/etc/crontab" file as root, you can change the time that those are run. There are a number of guides online that can explain how to edit this file, or a "man crontab" will help. Another consideration is that if your computer is typically not on at that time, anacron may be kicking in to run those jobs. It checks to see if a scheduled job has not run in x (defaults to 1) days, and if not, waits y (defaults to 5) minutes and then runs those jobs. Since you are consistently seeing this behavior at boot, it seems likely that anacron is kicking the job off. If you edit the "/etc/anacrontab" file, you can see anacron's schedule. The first uncommented line looks like "1 5 cron.daily nice run-parts --report /etc/cron.daily". If you change that so that the delay is longer, it will hopefully trigger when your system is less busy. You can do this by changing the "5" to a larger value, say 45 minutes. That way, you should be in your system, most of the programs you are using are loaded to RAM already, and your disk IO will be lower. You can also make the "1" a higher value, which will make anacron wait longer before it runs missed daily cron jobs. While we're looking at this, let's make sure your hard disk is using DMA. If not, that will result in really poor IO performance. Would you run "sudo hdparm /dev/hda" and "sudo hdparm -tT /dev/hda" paste the output into this bug? If your system drive is not "hda", replace that with an appropriate value. -- -Regards- -Quentin Hartman- -- [Gutsy] after this mornings updates gnome took >5minutes to load https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/129928 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
