[Bug 54246] Re: DMRAID stopped to work in kernels 2.6.15

2006-10-29 Thread Richard Bailey
If you want to get more information during boot, to troubleshoot why it
hangs for a few minutes or any other issue, when grub comes up edit the
grub command and remove the quiet and splash options from the end.

In fact, remove the splash option first and see if you can see your
error message, removing quiet floods the screen with boot messages and
the error might get lost.

[Bug 69383] Re: Key can_suspend_to_ram missing

2006-10-31 Thread Richard Hughes
The gconf can_suspend_to_* keys are dead - only can_hibernate and
can_suspend should exist in 2.16.x and 2.17.x releases.

The message you are refering to come from:

/**

 * @hal: This hal class instance
 * Return value: TRUE if kernel suspend support is compiled in
 *
 * Finds out if HAL indicates that we can suspend
 **/
gboolean

gboolean can_suspend;

g_return_val_if_fail (GPM_IS_HAL (hal), FALSE);

/* TODO: Change to can_suspend when rely on newer HAL */
exists = gpm_hal_device_get_bool (hal, HAL_ROOT_COMPUTER,

  can_suspend);
if (exists == FALSE) {
gpm_warning (gpm_hal_can_suspend: Key can_suspend_to_ram

power_management.can_suspend_to_ram is depreciated, but still provided
by HAL.

[Bug 69531] Re: ImageMagick Font Issues

2006-10-31 Thread Richard Laager
Perhaps this package should be using Defoma: Defoma, which stands for
DEbian FOnt MAnager, provides a framework for automatic font
configuration. An application whose configuration of fonts usually
requires manual intervention can automate the process through Defoma, by
installing a Defoma-configuration script. The script gets called
whenever a font is installed and removed, so that the script may update
the application configuration.

[Bug 67586] Re: default homepage nonexistant

2006-10-31 Thread Richard Johnson
This isn't a Kubuntu docs issue either I don't believe, but this should
fix your problem:

At the command line (terminal, console) type:

sudo update-alternatives --config firefox-homepage

enter your password

Select the option that looks like:

/usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/firefox-index.html

In my case it is option 1, so I would type 1 and press enter. If it is
option 2 for you, then select 2 and press enter. You want the firefox-
index.html selected. I think this is due to borkage from upgrading from
Breezy to Dapper to Edgy. Possibly locations and/or filenames changed
during these times and didn't upgraded correctly.

Re: [Bug 67606] Re: dmraid is initialized before udev

2006-10-31 Thread Richard Bailey
In addition to the scripts in the initramfs dmraid's initialization is
switched. It did affect me hence the reason for opening the bug. You can see
my comment in the main bug about it. If you want to test it out you can
remove /etc/rcS.d/S11dmraid from your system and see if everything works
fine.

NB: I wasn't booting into the raid, I booted into hda but I had other
partitions I wanted to access post boot that were on raid, but before my
update (moving dmraid from S03 to S11) I could not access them without
running dmraid -ay maunally.

Yes, I have confirmed that our dmraid package differs from debian's by
setting up dmraid in the initramfs. The rc scripts just run it for a

[Bug 69531] ImageMagick Font Issues

2006-10-31 Thread Richard Laager
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libmagick9

Regarding one of our web servers, a co-worker of mine filed an internal
bug with this text:

ImageMagick fonts don't get properly configured -- this seems like it
may be a package bug to me, though I'm not sure.
 Basically /usr/lib/ImageMagick-6.2.4/config/type.xml, as installed,
refers to type-ghostscript.xml, which refers to fonts that are not
installed (we don't have any Type 1 fonts installed). The ImageMagick
 examples page ( http://www.cit.gu.edu.au/~anthony/graphics/imagick6/ )
suggests using a script to enumerate fonts:
 http://www.cit.gu.edu.au/~anthony/graphics/imagick6/scripts/imagick_type_gen
(this produces a replacement for type.xml). I did that and it seems to work
fine. The proper way would probably involve having every installed font
package add a file to be included in type.xml. (Well, ideally, there would be
 a type.d directory, I suppose :) )

Our needing to edit a configuration file which is stored
in /usr/lib/ImageMagick-6.2.4/config makes me nervous. It's going to get
overwritten on upgrades, since it's not a conffile, right?

there is no way to select OK using either the mouse or the keyboard.

[Bug 34233] Re: g-p-m failing to use DPMS to power off display

2006-11-02 Thread Richard Hughes
Meaning if lid=closed you will never get a running screensaver nor will it
ever dpms.
Only if lid=open it will dpms !!!

Incorrect. If the lid is closed then the automatic DPMS timeout is
disabled, and the lid DPMS is forced off. When the lid id re-opened,
then the DPMS is turned on, and the timeout restored. It sounds like you
may be suffering from an ACPI problem (or a bios or hardware problem)
where the lid status is not being detected correctly.

Richard.

[Bug 68827] Re: Moving sheet tabs results in wrong order or crash

2006-11-02 Thread Richard Ferguson
I only saw the crash once.. and It might have been related to renaming
tabs and not moving them. If I can get it to repeat i'll capture and
backtrace and file a report for it.

I am seeing this with the new Edgy release, not sure the version, I can
look it up when I get home. I also see it with Dapper and gnumeric
version 1.6.3

Steps to reproduce it on dapper. (May work with edgy too)

Open gnumeric
Right click on sheet 3 and append a new sheet.
Right click on sheet 4 and append a new sheet. ( Repeat until 8 sheets are
present and in order)
Now drag sheet 8 from the end and and drop between sheets 2 and 3.
The new order should be 1,2,8,3,4,5,6,7.
What I get is 1,2,4,3,6,5,8,7.

I can then drag sheet 8 back to the end and all the sheets flip back to
their original locations, i.e. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8.

The only way I can get the sheets in the right order is to drag and drop
sheet 8 one location at a time.

2006-11-02 Thread Richard Hughes
Should be:

==
Version 2.16.1
==

Released September 29, 2006

General

 - Use the step value we computed (rather than one) to fix pressing
brightness-down on the Macbook Pro. (David Zeuthen) #358067
 - Remove the FIXME to fix #334212. It's breaking more laptops that it
was intended to fix and also breaks my (already broken) iBook.
 - Also ignore DBUS_GERROR_REMOTE_EXCEPTION as this prevents the
'HAL failed to suspend' when actually it suspended fine but the bus
   timed out.
 - Fix a couple of small memory leaks where we don't free an icon name.
 - Don't rescan buttons every minute. #356170.
 - Fix hotplug add and remove of wireless mice.
 - Add the new battery types so we don't print a warning with
   newer than HAL 0.5.8.1
 - Increase dep of libgnome to 2.14.0 because we are using
GNOME_PARAM_GOPTION_CONTEXT, which was introduced in 2-14
   (Mart Raudsepp) #355437

I'd recommend against uploading 2.0.0beta4. There were some regressions
in beta4. Some have been fixed, some will be fixed shortly (and then
we'll release a beta4.1 or something), and some might take more time to
be fixed properly.

2006-11-02 Thread Richard Laager
Well, libnm-glib causing gaim to hang infinitely on startup is a bad
regression. This affects Dapper, so it might cause problems for Edgy.
They'd have to be careful to disable libnm support until we fix that.
There are some more, Sean or Luke would know more. When we get beta5 out
shortly, only the libnm problem should be left.

[Bug 70145] Nautilus integration with seahorse results in crash

2006-11-03 Thread Richard Ferguson
Public bug reported:

Trying to sign files using the nautilus context menu results in and
error or crash. When trying to sign a file with the 'Sign' menu option
results in an error. When encrypting a file with the 'Encrypt...' menu
option and also self signing the file, results in a crash.

'Sign' Menu Option

I right click on a file and select 'Sign'
Seahorse pops open a dialog so I can select who to sign as.
After I select the key and click OK, I get an error dialog 'Couldn't load
keys', 'End of file'.
I expect a prompt to enter my passphrase.

'Encrypt...' Menu Option
I right click on a file and select 'Encrypt...'
Seahorse pops open a dialog so I can select who to encrypt for.
I select the recipients, and also select to sign the message too.
When I then click OK I get bug buddy telling me seahorse has crashed.

Note, If I don't try to sign the message when I encrypt it, it works
fine. Appears to be related to the signing part of seahorse.

[Bug 61986] Re: tango icon set

2006-09-23 Thread Richard Laager
Regarding the first, it's very important that you not replace the about
box logo with something that says GAIM. The program is always to be
referred to as Gaim or gaim, as outlined in the FAQ.

Gaim 2.0.0 has a number of icons from lokheed's previous icon theme.

Regarding the specific icons...

The Gaim developers are split on the clock vs. notepad icon for away.

I don't think it's a good idea to replace the generic Jabber icon with
an icon clearly based on the Google Talk icon.

The Yahoo icon is even less recognizable than the current one we have in
Gaim.

I don't like the replacement of the Gaim dude icons wholesale. The
status ones incorporate the icon for a web browser, which is really
confusing. The dialog ones are nice, but the Gaim Cool icon has been
replaced with something that indicates a clear lack of understanding
about what that icon is used for.

I really with the creator of these icons would've brought them to us for
inclusion upstream, but he didn't. I found a previous version from a
user's suggestion. As I mentioned, I included many of them upstream.
However, the creator of those icons wasn't willing to work with us on
changing some icons to meet the developers' requirements. To be fair, I
rejected some of them right away without providing reasons (which I
intended on getting to later) which set a bad tone.

I could detail more issues, which are not as critical, but it's really
late here...

Regarding the second set... I like some of those better, but I'm not
going to detail it.

All in all, if you feel there are specific icons in these themes that
are better than those in Gaim 2.0.0 now, I'd be willing to look at
including them upstream, which seems like a far better thing for
everyone involved. I'd really rather not see Ubuntu with different icons
(unless their entire desktop theme were to vary a lot from the
respective upstream projects). It increases the support costs on both
sides, and deprives Gaim users on other distros of nicer icons.

[Bug 62050] [Kubuntu Edgy] KDM X Do Not Start Automatically

2006-09-23 Thread Richard Johnson
Public bug reported:

This could either be a duplicate of bug 59242, or very similar. I didn't
want to hijack that bug and it not be the same thing, plus that bug
didn't have enough info.

When booting, after all updates as of 2006-09-23 16:30 UTC, KDM and X do
not start automatically. It will boot, get past the usplash, and then
just present a blank (black) screen.

I am able to press 'alt+f1' and get to term to login. Once logged in,
StartX crashes saying that it is already running. However, if I do 'sudo
/etc/init.d/kdm restart' it starts up just fine. I will attach
Xorg.0.log and kdm.log for you to view.

If there are any other things you can recommend, please do so. Thanks

[Bug 58382] Similar problems on a Powerbook G3, x-session-manager hangs

2006-09-23 Thread Richard Theil
I see problems that are very similar to what is described here on a
Powerbook G3 that has been dist-upgraded from breezy to dapper. In a
low, but important percentage of cases, launching applications after a
wakeup from standby fails. Restarting Gnome restores a working
condition. I can't confirm points 4-6, but here I see an occasional
message bubble from the gnome-power icon that standby failed (or so).

Anticipating it to happen again, I left a terminal open and tried to trace an

With this read blocking, I had a look what process 4361 might be, and it was

So my particular instance of this problem seems to be x-session-manager
becoming unresponsive.

[Bug 59358] Re: gaim2.0b3 crashes when contacts sorted by log size

2006-09-23 Thread Richard Laager
For the record, if the log files are corrupt, we still shouldn't crash.
However, given the way the code works, nothing even looks at the
contents of the log files to determine their size. It's obtained from a
stat() call. So, getting a backtrace is the most useful next step here.

[Bug 61578] Re: [Edgy] Wrong boot disk parameter since 2.6.17-7

2006-09-24 Thread Richard Kleeman
I had a similar problem which I originally reported as a kernel issue.
After 2.6.17-7 (8 and 9) the system would not boot with the error:

Begin: Waiting for root file system

My /etc/fstab shows:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# file system mount point type options dump pass
proc/proc procdefaults0 0
# /dev/sda10 -- converted during upgrade to edgy

/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0

But in /boot/grub/menu.lst the relevant boot line showed:

/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-9-generic root=/dev/sda10 ro

If I replaced this with the right root location according to
/etc/fstab i.e. with

/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-9-generic
root=UUID=67f18326-0ffc-4835-9de5-67d173f6ca84 ro

then the system booted without problem.

It seems that in upgrading from dapper the filesystem or partition
information in /etc/fstab has been changed but this change has not been
reflected in the grub entry.

Following a suggestion by Ben Collins I removed kopt lines in
/boot/grub/menu.lst and ran grub-update. This had the effect of replacing
root=/dev/sda10 with root=/dev/hda1 which was veru strange and this also did
not help the system boot.

I think this is a major bug because I installed a standard dapper and
then did a standard upgrade to edgy and the sytem did not boot.

[Bug 62050] Re: [Kubuntu Edgy] KDM X Do Not Start Automatically

2006-09-25 Thread Richard Johnson
For what it is worth...

There was a message when I did an apt-get update/upgrade and what not
telling me there was a ton of packages that I didn't need anymore, and
to clear them out do 'apt-get autoremove'. I did this, and it removed
pretty much the entire kubuntu-desktop package. Once it was complete I
did, apt-get install kubuntu-desktop, and rebooted w/o any problems.

So now, I had 2 issues fixed with the kubuntu-desktop 'reinstall'. My
computer now reboots, and KDM now starts automatically.

[Bug 48628] Re: gtodo.desktop: Missing Encoding Directive

2006-09-25 Thread Richard Wilbur
I just got the latest Dapper (PPC) network update and twice saw a
similar message as the update was being applied (see attached log).

I was surprised to see the problem in gtodo as it didn't obviously
appear to be part of the update. Further evidence:

/usr/share/applications$ ls -l gtodo.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 813 2006-04-06 21:40 gtodo.desktop

So, why haven't I seen this bug in the past? What would be the correct
contents of the Encoding line? (It's the last line of gtodo.desktop
in my case.)

[Bug 58382] Re: Suspend vs. Hibernation on this issue.

2006-09-25 Thread Richard Theil
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 49221 ***

This has nothing to do with hibernation!
 That's a whole 'nuther issue.

My Powerbook has the problem when waking up from _suspend_ (RAM
preserved, Power light pulsing), so from this point of view, it should
be filed here. The strace output with hanging gnome-session above (x
-session-manager is an alias for gnome-session) is the cause for the
failure on my Powerbook - but that is about identical to the traces
filed for the other bug. So it's likely that gnome-session has general
problems with sleep recovery.

[Bug 61578] Re: [Edgy] Wrong boot disk parameter since 2.6.17-7

2006-09-27 Thread Richard Kleeman
Latest update of grub and kernel (9/27) adds what appears to be a correct kopt
entry to /boot/grub/menu.lst (in my case
root=UUID=67f18326-0ffc-4835-9de5-67d173f6ca84 ro) however it also adds a /hda1
entry as well which causes update-grub to produce a root=/hda1 which causes the
boot to fail. If this latter kopt is removed an update-grub produces a
workeable menu.lst with root=UUID=67f18326-0ffc-4835-9de5-67d173f6ca84 ro
as a kernel option for the edgy kernels.

I do have a ide (as well as scsi) disk on hda which must be being
detected and incorrectly inserted in menu.lst (I never have a root file
system attached to the ide drive).

[Bug 40219] Re: Ubuntu-Server 6.06: dpkg returned an error code (1)

2006-09-28 Thread Richard H
I'm still getting this error and in looking at the debian bug tracker it looks
like it might be related to the following:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=352185

In there they release a -2 package that seems to have the fix, but
ubuntu seems to be shipping with a -1build1. I'm not 100% up on how
ubuntu repackages what, but I think updating this package from the
debian release should fix this.

[Bug 62873] Re: 6.06 (Dapper Drake) and 6.10 (Edgy Eft) will not on 300 GB HD

2006-09-28 Thread Richard Johnson
Does the BIOS in the current system support that large of a drive? Grub
Error 18 is usually due to the drive being larger than the BIOS
supports. A couple of options would be to update the BIOS and see if
that helps. I know on my system, I am using the larger drives with PCI
Controller cards, as w/o them I would have the same problem as you do.

Do you get an error similar to:

kernel (hd1,4) /bzImage root=/dev/hdb7
Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds max supported by BIOS

Another thing to look at, if possible, is setting your drive to LBA
(Logical Block Addressing) in the BIOS as well.

See if any of this helps out at all. Thanks for the report!

[Bug 62917] Re: Real Player will not install even with Real Players instructions.

2006-09-29 Thread Richard Johnson
Real Player installs and operates fine here. I think the solution you
are seeking can be found via
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

Also, you can enable universe and multiverse repositories, and 'sudo
apt-get install mozilla-firefox' as that will help you out a little bit.

Also if possible, re-word your bugs in the future so they follow the
Ubuntu Code of Conduct (http://www.ubuntu.com/community/conduct). I know
it gets frustrating at times, but no reason to take it out here.
Everyone in the world is a so-called n00b as you put it, so no need to
talk down people who aren't as familiar with computers just yet.

Now migrating from Windows for your first time to Linux will take a
massive amount of patience. For some reason a lot of people think that
Linux is the same thing as Microsoft. Go over the Restricted Formats
page I posted and you should be fine. Any more issues arise we will be
more than happy to help. Thank you!

2006-09-29 Thread Richard Johnson
Kubuntu fix via command line, and Ubuntu and the rest should be similar:

##For /usr/lib/usplash link, do
sudo ln -s /etc/alternatives/usplash-artwork.so
/usr/lib/usplash/usplash-artwork.so

##For /etc/alternatives usplash link do.
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-kubuntu.so
/etc/alternatives/usplash-artwork.so

##Make sure usplash resolution is correct
sudo nano /etc/usplash.conf

should look like

# Usplash configuration file
xres=1024
yres=768

Once you have done all of that, then at the command line, do...

sudo update-initramfs -u

Then reboot and you should be enjoying your new usplash ;) Check the file
names, as the kubuntu theme is for kubuntu and so forth

Public bug reported:

Hi,

Installed Ubuntu Edgy Beta 1 yesterday. I am unable to install either
Google Earth or Enemy Territory. Both installers are in the form of a
.bin or .run file. I fear this problem may affect other installers (such
as Quake 4). Both throw up fairly similar errors:

As I'm running the amd64 version of Ubuntu, I feel it may be amd64
specific. I shall install the 32-bit version on a spare machine to test
later on today.

can you boot in safe mode (press escape at the Grub screen). Once you
are in there, you want to type

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

go through and answer the questions, defaults on most of these will be good.
You will come to the section about your monitor. You will need to locate the
horizontal and vertical refresh rates if you can, and type them in the correct
area. There are times, especially with laptops, and the newer ones as well,
where the refresh rates become confused and out of synch. Also if you can, get

[Bug 63335] patches in debian/patches are not applied

2006-10-01 Thread Richard Hult

The patches in the libnotify package are not applied, so the bugs that
they claim to fix are not actually fixed:

  * debian/patches/01_reopen-notification.patch:

bubble. Patch from upstream SVN (r2882)
  * debian/patches/02_fix-typo.patch:

[Bug 133786] Re: Bus error when running Firefox or Epiphany

2007-10-25 Thread Richard Ayotte
The corruption problems that I initially experienced went away until
after this morning's update. I can't even boot into my system because of
bus errors on the ttys. Could the libc6 update cause this? I'm not sure
how to repair now. Here's the output of xfs_check:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# xfs_check /dev/sdb1
agi unlinked bucket 44 is 96428 in ag 7 (inode=939620524)
agi unlinked bucket 50 is 96434 in ag 7 (inode=939620530)
allocated inode 939620524 has 0 link count
allocated inode 939620530 has 0 link count

This bug is definitely beyond Firefox or Epiphany and more likely a
libc6, kernel or driver problem. We could probably rule out bad hardware
at this point.
