I believe nspluginwrapper would actually keep the firefox window running
even if the flash plugin crashes.. but I'm using the native 64-bit flash
plugin as well, we'll see how it goes :)

I've tested it several times on 8.10 intrepid, new installations
(along with the packages that were mentioned in the dpkg log), but the
install finishes successfully, perhaps it was a one-time bug.

Backup your acidlab configuration if you want, but can you purge acidlab?
sudo apt-get purge acidlab
sudo rm -rf /etc/acidlab

[Bug 205218] Re: [unmet dependencies] glife requires libglade-gnome0, but that doesn't exists

2008-11-20 Thread Savvas Radevic
I tried to port it, just for practice..
It requires gnome-config command (libgnome-dev)
Also, /usr/include/gnome-xml seems to be required and missing (libxml-dev).
I tried using libxml2-dev, but I got stuck at compiling:
glife.c:299: error: ‘LifeData’ has no member named ‘xml’
glife.c:300: error: ‘LifeData’ has no member named ‘xml’

But I'm not that good with C programming.

I'm attaching the files I've changed:
1) configure:
echo $ac_n "checking for Glade libraries...""... $ac_c" 1>&6
echo "configure:2132: checking for Glade libraries..." >&5

LIBGLADE_LIBS="-rdynamic -L/usr/lib -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lglade-gnome -lglade

2008-11-20 Thread Savvas Radevic
OK, it looks like to resolve this you have to do: sudo dpkg-reconfigure --force
acidlab
..and customize it from there.

Or:
sudo apt-get purge acidlab
sudo rm -rf /etc/acidlab
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install acidlab

But I think the debian package should be able to resolve this
automatically

[Bug 300997] [NEW] monthcalendar on ubuntu wikis - unattractive brown/red colours

[Bug 23475] Re: Cannot create a user "håkan "

2008-11-23 Thread Savvas Radevic
It seems there is a standard problem:
$ sudo adduser håkan
adduser: To avoid problems, the username should consist only of
letters, digits, underscores, periods, at signs and dashes, and not start with
a dash (as defined by IEEE Std 1003.1-2001). For compatibility with Samba
machine accounts $ is also supported at the end of the username

http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/basedefs/xbd_chap06.html#tag_06_01
http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/basedefs/xbd_chap03.html
Alias Name:
"In the shell command language, a word consisting solely of underscores,
digits, and alphabetics from the portable character set and any of the
following characters: '!', '%', ',', '@'.
Implementations may allow other characters within alias names as an extension. "
and Name:
"In the shell command language, a word consisting solely of underscores,
digits, and alphabetics from the portable character set. The first character of
a name is not a digit. "

On the other hand, I've used the useradd command instead of adduser:
sudo useradd -m håkan

and the user got listed in /etc/passwd:
håkan:x:1004:1004::/home/håkan:/bin/sh

I could login and use it, but I wonder if it will break any programs..

mp3 and firefox work as far as I can see.. who says linux can't support
non-ascii? :)

** Also affects: adduser (Ubuntu)

** Changed in: shadow
   Status: Incomplete => Invalid

** Description changed:

This is on the latest Ubuntu preview release.

If I filed this bug on the wrong package, feel free to move it - thanks!

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Run the installer and go to the step where you create a new user.
  2. Real name doesn't seem to matter.
  3. Put in username "håkan" (without the quotes)
  4. Type in password, and click OK.

Actual behaviour: The guide goes back to step 1, ignoring to create the
desired
user. Probably it can't handle the character 'å', and fails silently.

Expected behaviour: I would like to be able to use my first name as
  username.

+ Tested software packages/commands:
+ user-setup: failed
+ adduser: failed
+ useradd: passed

doubts whether someone will be able to send to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Definitely this is not a problem if it is just a standard desktop, but even
then it is worth checking what happens when e.g. cron sends you an email. For
example, will you be able to receive emails for root, if root's mail is aliased
to your username? This might be an experiment worth trying."

[Bug 33011] Re: Resize doesn't work

2008-11-16 Thread Savvas Radevic
You need to provide more information:
1) output of command: apt-cache policy gparted
2) output of command: ls -l /dev/disk/by-id/
3) output of command: sudo fdisk -l
4) output of command: mount

I'd suggest to try and resize your hard drive when you're within a live cd
environment, see if you have the same problems.
Another thing I would suggest is to check your hard drive partitions manually
even before resizing. (In gnome partition editor, right-click on partition and
select "Check").
A third suggestion would be to actually do the same checking on your own:
sudo e2fck /dev/sda1
(where /dev/sda1 should be replaced with the partition in question)

Because:
a) they are third-party repositories, not used in Ubuntu and not
supported officially.
b) they can and probably will create problems while upgrading.
c) people usually report the problems of the third-party repositories
and connect it to Ubuntu packages and forget to mention that they even
use third-party software. This can be really confusing for the
developers and the bug squad.

However, I'm just providing my opinion about this, I'm not an official
representative - Ubuntu might has a different stand on this :)

It's probably just gst, since there was a fix provided for it in an

Re: [Bug 200868] Re: nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf

2009-06-23 Thread Savvas Radevic
> Again, if you have a BETTER solution, then implement it.  Don't just
> talk about it.  Otherwise I'll keep advising people to do what works

I'd have to agree with this comment, Ubuntu is (or should be) all
about the human needs, not the "proper" thing to do (which seems to
take enough time to be implemented).

> Hacks are not fixes. Also, is this program even installed by default?
> Paper cuts are only for things installed by default.

I don't know about that, but the papercut specifications include
these: https://launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts
a) - bugs that impact standard workflows (like connecting to the
network, copying files, browsing folders, etc.), rather than
specialised or corner case workflows

It is a standard workflow, people install the nvidia driver all the
time. Even though nvidia-settings is in universe, nvidia-settings _is
suggested_ by System > Preferences > Display: "It appears that your
graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this
tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?"
(which opens up nvidia-settings)

b) - bugs that are easy to address, rather that ones that require
significant design or development efforts

I don't know and probably will not be the judge of this one, but if
the PolicyKit seems hard, there is the alternative issue of applying a
mere workaround for the time being, using gksu in the menu item.

c) - bugs that relate to usability and design (like size of the
notification bubbles), rather than broken software (e.g. notifications
flickering in fullscreen)

It is highly related to usability.

> I would say just making a full GUI app run as root is enough of a bug to
> not implement this 'fix'.

That's a bug *everyone* could live with, until the proper fix comes out.

> You are certainly welcome to advise them of your workaround for this
> bug. I just don't believe such a thing should be added to the package.

I have posted this as a papercut because it just is and there is an
easy solution (at least one of the available ones).

If we implement the gksu usage as an easy temporary solution, people
will have less to think about while fixing up their resolution issues.
This way, the developer would not be rushed into making a fix and
would make a properly defined fix with the PolicyKit patch.

Right now, I see an easy workaround, which you don't want to implement
just because it's not "proper", and a hard one, which will probably
take time to be implemented. It is a papercut issue to me and probably
(IMHO) some other people trying to help out their fellow humans how to
install their driver properly.

Sanity check:

1. Did you use:
a) the diff from
https://code.launchpad.net/~medigeek/software-properties/kde_deb_and_deb-src_unicode_fix/+merge/4956
?
*or*
b) the revision 558 from

2. Can you provide a screenshot?

3. Which release? jaunty 9.04?

"Código fuente" works in software-properties-gtk so the problem seems
to be to the way kde handles utf-8 (?).

If it matters, the .sh had an sh hashbang:
#!/bin/sh

Just so that there aren't any misconceptions, sync is done quite
*frequently*!

Synchonization of the packages is an automatic process taken care of by a
bot. The actual command for the sync of all packages is issued by a person,
administrators who have such authorization, and it's done manually (when
they remember to do that).

I'm not much of a help, since I'm not a MOTU nor part of the contributors
team (not yet at least), so consider me as a "freelancer" contributor. :)

So far I could not understand who are the people in Ubuntu who would care

Each package from Debian is allowed to be synchronized until the June 25th
2009 for future release Ubuntu 9.10. Here's the schedule:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KarmicReleaseSchedule

After the "Debian import freeze" date, you can still ask for a new release
until the "Feature freeze" date, August 27th.

Bugfix software releases are accepted even after that date as far as I know,
if you lay down the changes included and the bugs that got fix.

The channel for general contributors and MOTU (people who take care of the
packages in "universe" and "multiverse" repostitories) is considered to be
#ubuntu-motu - there you can find people interested to package your
software, or help/guide you to package it properly.

[Bug 193558] Re: [Wishlist] Include limit-rate bandwidth option

2009-06-15 Thread Savvas Radevic
Until the solution comes:
(A) execute in Terminal: sudo apt-get -o Acquire::http::Dl-Limit=80 upgrade
It will limit the download to 80kb/s
or

(B) 1. Execute in Terminal:

gksu gedit /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/custom-limit-bandwidth

 2. Add these lines:

Acquire
{
  http
  {
Dl-Limit "80";// 80Kb/sec maximum download rate
  };
};

 3. Edit "80" to your preference.
 4. Save and close gedit (text editor)

 5. Execute in Terminal:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

 5. Enjoy!
