2008-09-29 Thread Sjoerd
This did solve the problem for me.
Thanks.

Does this resolve the problem of the crashing rastertoqpdl?

[Bug 712377] Re: Opening a known good *.deb with software centre, fails to install as lintian errors cannot be overidden

2011-04-15 Thread Sjoerd
I can confirm that this problem is fixed.
It still gives the error, but with the option to 'ignore and install'.

The only thing I don't get is why World of Goo for example never gave any
errors in previous Ubuntu releases.
Did the software center become more strict in scanning packages, or is this
quality check entirely new?

[Bug 712377] Re: Opening a known good *.deb with software centre, fails to install as lintian errors cannot be overidden

2011-04-07 Thread Sjoerd
I have tried installing World of Goo but I got the same problem again. I've got
the download from the humble bundle site, so it's perfectly trusted. I get the
same problem too with Google App Inventor, so it's not a bug in the World of
Goo package.
I've also tried installing Skype, this does work for some mysterious reason.

I'm running 11.04 with the latest updates.
Please note that I do have a PPA with the latest daily of Unity, but I don't
think that's the problem.

Here's the error message (with Google App Inventor, from the regular Google
site):

The package is of bad quality
The installation of a package which violates the quality standards isn't
allowed. This could cause serious problems on your computer. Please contact the
person or organisation who provided this package file and include the details
beneath.
And here are more details:
Lintian check results for /home/sjoerd/Downloads/appinventor-setup_1.1_all.deb:
E: appinventor-setup: arch-independent-package-contains-binary-or-object
./usr/google/appinventor/commands-for-Appinventor/adb

E: appinventor-setup: arch-independent-package-contains-binary-or-object
./usr/google/appinventor/commands-for-Appinventor/emulator

E: appinventor-setup: arch-independent-package-contains-binary-or-object
./usr/google/appinventor/commands-for-Appinventor/mksdcard

I run Ubuntu 11.04, latest updates. I do run the 64-bit edition.
And again, Skype didn't install before and now it does. But the fix doesn't
work for all software, in fact, it doesn't work for most software.

Altough I don't think it's really relevant, here are my hardware specs:
AMD Athlon II X4 640 3.0GHz
2GB DDR2 RAM 800MHz
500GB Hard disk, 7200RPM
ATI RADEON HD3450 Videocard, 256Mb
And the basic stuff (17 Monitor, USB, disk drive etc..)

2011-04-12 Thread Sjoerd
I'm sorry if I'm doing it wrong, but I wanted to say that the status is wrong...
The problem still exists with a lot of packages. At the moment I'm not able to
install World Of Goo or Google App Inventor for example. Both well-known
products from reliable and trusted sources.

I should tell you that I am able to install Skype since the 'fix'. I wasn't
before (in Natty).
The only problem is that it still doesn't work on a lot of other (trusted)
packages.

[Bug 567292] [NEW] Ugly (old) volume icon in Totem (and other players)

2010-04-20 Thread Sjoerd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Hey, I'm sorry if I'm reporting this bug incorrectly, this is my first
bug report ever so I hope you'll understand.

Since a couple of days the volume icon in Totem, Rhythmbox, and pretty much all
players who use the default icon have lost their monochrome icon that they
should have.
It has been replaced by the old, ugly icon which appeared in the early Lucid
stages as a placeholder for the current icon.
Here is a picture: http://i.imgur.com/UBpfP.png

I'm pretty sure this is not what Canonical intended.
With the release candidate within a few days this should be solved pretty soon!
Since this is a easy to solve issue, I do not see why this hasn't been solved
yet.

By the way, since that time Xv video output doesn't work anymore with
Gstreamer. I do not know if it is related, but if it is.. It can be useful
information. Here a link for more details concerning the Xv issue:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1457205
(Again, I don't think it is related, but if it is.. It may be useful)

The issue pretty much has been confirmed, there are a lot of other
Ubuntu users with this issue, here's a link with more information:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1455848

I'm Running Ubuntu 10.04 with the latest updates. Totem, Rhythmbox or
any other players don't give any errors.. It looks like this issue is
theme-related..

[Bug 567292] Re: Ugly (old) volume icon in Totem (and other players)

2010-04-20 Thread Sjoerd
The monochrome volume icon in Rhythmbox, Totem, Banshee etc... has been
replaced by an older icon..
Here is a screenshot how it should be:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FJH0hYZmVtc/S8Hbpok_74I/HVo/4V1-1EQfXWc/s1600/Selection_004.png

Here is a screenshot how it actually is:
http://img706.imageshack.us/i/schermafdrukmuziekspele.png/

Notice the difference between the volume icons?
It has been displaying the previous icon correctly... But it looks like they've
changed it. (It has the 'ugly' icon in the latest daily builts too)

Is there any reason at all why they didn't stick with this one? (See

They used this one in the beta releases, I think we all can agree that it fits
better in the new theme than the other one.. (see previous attachement)

[Bug 26436] Re: gtkmozembed crashs with python

2007-05-01 Thread Sjoerd Hemminga
Problem still exists on Feisty Fawn (this is an amd64 machine; previous
machine was i386). The ld.so.conf work-around mentioned above still
works (for the Python test case and for Newton Desktop Wiki). I didn't
test the RPATH fixes, but I suppose they should still work as well.

Boris, I wanted to try your fix, but I don't have the file
/usr/lib/firefox/components/compreg.dat. The only compreg.dat on my
system exists in my personal profile in my home directory. Removing that
doesn't seem to achieve any effect. Is this the same bug?

Is anybody working on this problem, or is the GTK Mozilla component a
lost cause for Python+Ubuntu?

2007-05-02 Thread Sjoerd Hemminga

I think the most natural thing would be to fix this on
python-gtkmozembed side for now. rpath sounds good. ld.so.conf might
interfere with other gecko apps that ship their own gecko libs.

The rpath fix would need to be applied to Firefox. python-gtkmozembed
(python-gnome2-extras) already has the rpath set to contain /usr/lib/firefox.
I'm not sure if this will cause problems for other packages.

If the ld.so.conf work-around is considered, I would suggest
using /etc/ld.so.conf.d/. This will make uninstallation of the package less
of a nightmare.

It is of note that /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/run-mozilla.sh
and /usr/lib/firefox/firefox both set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to contain their
respective mozilla library directories. Adding the ld.so.conf(.d) work
around might not have as big an impact as we fear, but I do believe other
alternatives might be better; if we have any.

For applications that live in the gnome panel LD_LIBRARY_PATH is not an
option.

How do other distributions solve this problem with Firefox and
python-gtkmozembed? I imagine that Debian's Iceweasel has similar problems.

why rpath on firefox side? why not on python?

The gtkmozembed component already has its rpath set and it doesn't work.
Setting the rpath on the python executable might work; I haven't tried this.
I lack knowledge about the resolve mechanisms of the run-time linker to judge
this.

Re: [Bug 398451] Re: b43 gives fatal dma error on amd athlon based machine(s)

2009-12-23 Thread Schipper Sjoerd
I've booted my machine into 9.10 and was able to successfully connect my
machine. No dma errors as far as I could see. In the past I managed to
establish a connection sometimes, but after a few minutes it always
disconnected. Or rather failed to transmit any data without actually
disconnecting. Now everything seems perfectly fine.
In Lucid Lynx however, connecting froze my system immediately until I
removed the wifi-card from my machine. But of course 10.04 is in alpha
stage, so problems could be expected. (I've experienced freezes on my
'working' machine with this wifi-card and 9.04, but I should give it a
try on 9.10 to see if that's still an issue).
So, problem solved!

If the issue remains, could you run the following command from a

I was now able to reproduce this problem here with the

 not
capture this error condition that properly and continues. The sanity
check about ubuntu-minimal later is then hit and the upgrade aborted.
The good news is that nothing is changed and the jaunty system will be
in its original state. I'm working now on capturing the error

[Bug 26436] Re: gtkmozembed crashs with python

2007-06-19 Thread Sjoerd Hemminga
I just reread this bug report. It seems to me there really are two bugs
here. The bug that is reported upstream is definitely not the bug I, and
apparently others, are experiencing. The C test worked, while the Python
version is consistently not working. The LD_LIBRARY_PATH work around
works for some while others report it non-working.

I'm not sure which bug the reporter was experiencing, but if I had to
wager a guess, it would not be the LD_LIBRARY_PATH bug. I think this bug
report needs to be split. (Is something like that possible?)

[Bug 26436] Re: gtkmozembed crashs with python

2007-03-04 Thread Sjoerd Hemminga
I have been hunting this bug yesterday. It annoyed me I haven't been
able to use Newton Desktop Wiki since I started using Dapper.

The Python script above reproduced the problem for me and I used this to
test my solutions. Setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH to /usr/lib/firefox as is
mentioned by some above and in other places did work.

gtkmozembed.so provided by python-gnome2-extras already has an RPATH set
to /usr/lib/firefox, so it does not help this library. But
/usr/lib/firefox/libgtkembedmoz.so has no such RPATH set.

My theory is that the crash is due to some dynamic loading of libraries
by the component. Python loads gtkmozembed.so, which loads
libgtkembedmoz.so which (I think) tries to load some additional libs
that reside in /usr/lib/firefox. It cannot find these, because they are
not in the linker's search path. Due to some missing or broken error
handling, this results in a crash instead of a friendly error message.
This is my theory.

I tested this by compiling Firefox (and therefore libgtkembedmoz.so)
with RPATH set. This resulted in a working test case. Good. The
attached patch fixes the Firefox package.

In Debian Policy RPATH is frowned upon. I don't know if this is the same
in Ubuntu. Seeing that gnome-python-extras uses RPATH, I think not. But
it can be a one off error. In that case, the same problem can also be
solved by creating a file /etc/ld.so.conf.d/firefox.conf with
/usr/lib/firefox as contents. (Run ldconfig after that.)

A good work-around while this isn't fixed is adding /usr/lib/firefox to
/etc/ld.so.conf and running ldconfig.

It is interesting to note that xulrunner puts libgtkembedmoz.so and
friends in /usr/lib, thereby bypassing this whole issue.

I hope this bug can be fixed before Feisty, since I would really, really
like to be able to use Newton out of the box again.

I think Elliott's bug is a different one.

[Bug 309006] [NEW] Kopete doesn't escape HTML in receiving messages

2008-12-17 Thread Sjoerd Hemminga
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdenetwork

When receiving a message that contains HTML code, Kopete will interpret
the HTML and display a parsed version of it. E.g. a
href=http://www.example.com/;Hi/a will display as a link to
example.com. I've seen this behaviour on ICQ, where the other person was
using CenterIM, and on MSN, where the other party was using Trillian.

It is quite annoying when people send you messages like http://link/
-- Check this out or an HTML paste. I'm not sure if this can be
abused. I tried some simple tests with Javascript, which didn't work,
but that was in no way exhaustive.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 and Kopete 4.1.3.

That bug (and it's duplicate bug #283495), are about sending text. This
bug is about received text. While those issues may be related, I don't
think they are the same.

[Bug 95532] moosic client throws ProtocolError

2007-03-24 Thread Sjoerd Hemminga
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: moosic

The moosic client dies with a ProtocolError when connecting to the
moosicd daemon. moosicd doesn't give any helpful output at that point,
but moosic itself shows this traceback:

I tried running over TCP/IP (same problem) and faking to be a client (by
using it's message to an earlier faked server) using nc, I got the
following session:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ nc localhost 9090

I also ran both client and server in Python 2.4. This worked. So it
seems the problem is with Python 2.5. It's also not a problem for a
client in Python 2.5 to talk to a server in Python 2.4. A Python 2.4
client talking to a Python 2.5 client throws the same error.

[Bug 945877] [NEW] GPU lockup when using glPolygonMode(GL_BACK, GL_LINE)

2012-03-03 Thread Sjoerd Cranen
Public bug reported:

I am making an application using OpenGL. Everything works fine, but if I

[Bug 788683] Re: Unity grid is broken for multi-monitor with right-hand side primary

2012-02-14 Thread Sjoerd Cranen
This bug seems to be solved in unity 4.28.0 already.

The only related (minor) flaw I can detect is that if you try to dock a
window on the right side of the left-hand monitor, and you move your
mouse pointer a little bit onto the other monitor, the indicator shows
it will be docked on the left monitor, but releasing the mouse button
docks the window on the left side of the right-hand monitor. That's no
biggie though, and I guess I should be filing a different bugreport for
that.

2011-10-19 Thread Sjoerd Zandstra
This is a VERY important system utility - my hardware depends on it.
Worked fine before the 11.10 upgrade but now seems broken. Please tell
me there is some setting that fixes this issue in an easy way.

[Bug 878010] Re: hdaps installed 11.10 amd64

2011-10-19 Thread Sjoerd Zandstra
Hi Evgeni, thank you for your prompt reply. I am running a Lenovo R60
Type 9456-HTG - Intel Centrino Duo, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD (Hitachi
Travelstar 80 GB 5400 rpm, SATA-100). I am not sure about tp-smapi - I
tried to install it using a how-to on the web but I don't get the
impression it was successful. HDD protection did work in 11.04. I have
installed the AWN applet and it says: sda protected from shocks but
when I move my laptop it doesn't actually park the heads!??!

Since this report seems to be open for discussion, I'll add my two

to be quite small and too close to the close button. It's easy to miss

[Bug 368868] [NEW] moosic warns about popen2 deprecation

2009-04-28 Thread Sjoerd Hemminga
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: moosic

A minor issue: when running the moosic command a warning is given about
the deprecation of popen2:

sjo...@hannibal:~$ moosic list
/var/lib/python-support/python2.6/moosic/client/factory.py:34:
DeprecationWarning: The popen2 module is deprecated. Use the subprocess module.
import xmlrpclib, urllib, httplib, socket, os, os.path, popen2, sys

This causes no problems, so it's merely a cosmetic issue and one of
preparing for the future.

[Bug 769277] Re: Eclipse shows overlay scrollbar but when i hover there is no scroll handles

2011-05-27 Thread Sjoerd Cranen
On Ubuntu 11.04 amd64, I installed Eclipse as follows:
  apt-get install eclipse-platform eclipse-cdt
This installed Eclipse Galileo. Overlay scrollbars were apparently not
blacklisted. I uninstalled overlay-scrollbar:
  apt-get remove overlay-scrollbar
Then found this thread, so though I would try again:
  apt-get install overlay-scrollbar
I now have overlay-scrollbar 0.1.12-0ubuntu1 installed, but still Eclipse is
not blacklisted. Can't use the tool Andrea posted on amd64, so couldn't say
what name should have been blacklisted.

[Bug 502433] Re: Lucid: b43 fatal DMA error on Dell Mini 9

2010-01-20 Thread Schipper Sjoerd
FYI

I suffer from the same error in Lucid (actually, in Karmic as well) on my Acer
Aspire 1350. Wifi-card works well on my other machine (Thinkpad A31).
Specs:
Acer Aspire 1350: AMD Athlon 2.6GHz processor, 500 MB ram
Thinkpad A31: Intel P4 1,6 GHz processor, 1,0 GB ram
Networkmanager shows a connection, IP-address gets assigned, everything looks
OK. But no data is transferred.
The wifi-card (Asus wl-100ge) does work on the Aspire if running windows.

Unfortunately my test system for this is i386 not amd64, any chance you
could do debs for that platform ? Also extra kudos if you have a package
combining the fix for this and #1064921 as it's the same system :)

[Bug 374221] Re: bad colours with Adobe reader 9

2013-03-04 Thread Sjoerd Cranen
My original bugreport was probably invalid. I was generating PDF files
with LaTeX, and the oversaturated colours only appeared when I included
images in my document. The workaround for my problem seems to be to
force Adobe Reader to use the right colorspace using the following hack:

\pdfpageattr {/Group  /S /Transparency /I true /CS /DeviceRGB}

I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature; the hack is not needed in
Evince.

[Bug 1064924] Re: Please add LVDS quirk for the zotac zbox

2014-01-02 Thread Sjoerd Simons
Yes this bug remains an issue for me, the problem really is there is no
solution that works for everyone.

Just to recap the problem with these machines is that they have an
external HDMI encoder which is hooked up to the LVDS output of the GPU.
Linux itself doesn't support configuring that encoder, so unless you're
lucky enough that the bios/default hardware setup of the encoder matches
the equipment hooked up to it HDMI output doesn't work. Which leaves two
options:

0) Add a no-lvds quirk, which disables the LVDS output alltogether
1) Not adding a quirk, which does mean HDMI out works if the stars align just
right but causes issues for those not using HDMI
or those that are less lucky.

Linux upstream picked solution 1, as option 0 causes regression for
those folks which have correctly aligned stars. Which means i'll keep
seeing the issue as i'm not using the HDMI out.

The only real solution for this would be for someone to add support for
the external encoder to the kernel, which is a non-trivial amount of
work and is relatively unlikely to happen as it's a quite old chipset by
now.

While the Zotac does have such an LVDI to HDMI bridge i've never seen it
working on any of my boxes and they're in general not properly supported
in linux (No real hotplug detection etc).

Which zotac model do you have for which this works and can you add the
output from DMI decode?

[Bug 1875649] Re: Screen flickering in Kubuntu 20.04 on Lenovo Yoga C940 14-IIL

2020-04-28 Thread Sjoerd Nijboer
This is a small piece of the log when watching a log.
the i915 eDP driver receives a "hotplug event received", which corresponds with
a slingle flickering of the screen.
So I assume something goes wrong with retraining the link, or for some reason
the screen thinks that the pc is disconnected and triggers an interrupt, which
then for some other reason flickers the screen.

I'm not well-versed with eDP 1.4, so I assume to be totally wrong.

[Bug 1875649] [NEW] Screen flickering in Kubuntu 20.04 on Lenovo Yoga C940 14-IIL

2020-04-28 Thread Sjoerd Nijboer
Public bug reported:

Screen flickering in Kubuntu 20.04 on Lenovo Yoga C940 14-IIL

I am filing this bug again in accordance with:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1875073/comments/3
I've deleted the repository and checked again, and the bug still persists.
Old bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1875073

My screen flickers on Kubuntu 20.04LTS.
See: https://imgur.com/a/FoWI1sp

Also affected:
Kubuntu 19.10
Fedora 31

System:
inxi -Gxxx
Graphics: Device-1: Intel Iris Plus Graphics G7 vendor: Lenovo driver: i915 v:
kernel bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:8a52
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.8 driver: modesetting compositor:
kwin_x11 resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel Iris Plus Graphics (ICL GT2) v: 4.6
Mesa 20.0.4 direct render: Yes

Reproduction scenario's:
1) Starting Kubuntu, screen flickers a couple of times during startup and turns
black for multiple seconds.
2) Start a youtube video, near-constant flickering. Audio works fine.
3) Open up various applications. Screen starts flickering every now and then.
4) Leave pc unattended for a long time, screen starts flickering sporadically.

Things I tried:
* Use various kernels
* linux kernel 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7rc2
* Ubuntu port of linux kernel 3.4.0-26-generic + patch
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/jkrzyszt/i915/-/commit/1ee48a61aa57dbdbc3cd2808d8b28df40d938e44
* intel-drm-next (kernel panic)
* Oibaf PPA

What I think is happening:
i915 is apperantly an unstable driver for eDP 1.4 screens.
That, in combination with a 10'th gen intel cpu is not a good combination.
According to dmesg the firmware of sof-audio-pci is restarting.

[ 324.775087] sof-audio-pci :00:1f.3: error: no reply expected,
received 0x0
[ 324.866267] sof-audio-pci :00:1f.3: firmware boot complete

Could the audio part of the eDP connection be breaking because of an issue
similar to the patch that is mentioned earlyer?

[Bug 1872760] Re: i915 - after return from suspend display is flickering

2020-04-25 Thread Sjoerd Nijboer
So it looks thesame (maybe a little less) but happens under different
circumstances?
I'm experiencing a similar issue and maybe got a temporary fix.
All I know is that with my laptop (Lenovo Yoga C940 14IL) i've got thesame
flickering as in that issue on Kubuntu 19.10, Kubuntu 20.04 and Fedora KDE 31.
Those are all 5.3.x and 5.4.x kernels if I got my kernel numbers right.
I've tried upgrading Kubuntu 20.04 to mainline kernel 5.6.0-050600 and that
didn't work.
Upgrading to 5.7-rc2 seems to work, but network card doesn't work out of the
box.

I've tried this issue with OpenGL 2.0, 3.1 and XRender with various
settings for vsync, that does have major effect to occurrence, and
that's why I think that how often it occurs isn't that important.

Could you try to install 5.6.0-050600 and 5.7-rc2 to confirm that the
underlying issue is thesame and fixed in 5.7?

[Bug 1872760] Re: i915 - after return from suspend display is flickering

2020-04-25 Thread Sjoerd Nijboer
There seems to be a known issue of i915 related screen flickering with
relation to power states, refresh rates and eDP for intel i915 in recent
kernels. (If i understand the issue correctly)

Can you confirm that the flickering is thesame as the videos in the
description of: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/272 ?

[Bug 1875073] [NEW] Screen flickering in Kubuntu 20.04 on Lenovo Yoga C940 14-IIL

2020-04-25 Thread Sjoerd Nijboer
Public bug reported:

I'm experiencing a problem extremely similar to
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/272
My screen flickers too on a fresh install of Kubuntu 20.04LTS
https://imgur.com/a/FoWI1sp

Results of `inxi -Gx`
`
Graphics: Device-1: Intel Iris Plus Graphics G7 vendor: Lenovo driver: i915 v:

`

I've tried 915.enable_psr=0 as a boot parameter, didn't work.
nomodeset does get me into a bootable image, but I'm looking into getting a
working driver.

Fedora 31 was having a similar issue, there was barely any flickering up untill
some recent kernel updates. (about a couple small ones every 10 minutes or so)
Kubuntu 19.10 was quite stable too, untill I installed a lenovo provided
firmware update (from AUCN45WW to AUCN54WW), which made it slightly worse.
I also tried a couple of other kernel parameters that haven't had any effect.
Running kernel 5.6 on Kubuntu did have thesame issue as regular kubuntu 20.04.
Running kernel 5.7-rc2 did fix the problem, but networking and sound was dead,
so it's only half a solution.
I highly suspect it's an issue with i915, but I don't know how I would trace it
down.
I don't know why and I don't know how.

[Bug 1875073] Re: Screen flickering in Kubuntu 20.04 on Lenovo Yoga C940 14-IIL

2020-04-26 Thread Sjoerd Nijboer
I tried getting a debug log of drm.i915 using "drm.debug=0x06" as a kernel
parameter.
In the log dmesg.txt there's a "hotplug event received" in batches, everytime
one of those appears, my screen flickers.
Which is weird to me since I don't unplug my fixed laptop screen.
It's likely that this is not a hardware faillure since this problem is not
reproducible on Windows.

bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1875254 mentions that
kernel 5.4.0-28 should've fixed the issue reported in that bug.
kernel 5.4.0-28 and the testkernel mentioned in that issue did not result in
different behaviour on my machine, the bug is still present.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1874010 mentions that
kernel 5.5.19 fixes the bug occuring in that pc.
For me it does not, it improves the complete flicker into horizontal lines of a
few pixels wide that are corrupted into random snow when watching video, and
occasionally the lines take up 1/3 of the screen and the screen goes black for
a second or two.

Nothing changed in the non-debug log on first glance.
So to me it looks like there's another uncovered bug happening.

[Bug 1875649] Re: [Ice Lake] Screen flickering in Kubuntu 20.04 on Lenovo Yoga C940 14-IIL

2020-04-29 Thread Sjoerd Nijboer
While https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plymouth/+bug/1873587 also
happens, I'm not that interested in it.
I get screen flicker during normal operation like watching video or opening a
program.
That is more important than some flickers during startup for me since screen
flickers during startup while annoying, don't stop me from using my laptop.
The cause might be thesame, but the symptoms aren't.

appeard.

So:
Ubuntu 18.04: no screen flicker
Kubuntuu 18.04: screen flicker
Ubuntu 20.04: screen flicker
Kubuntu 20.04: screen flicker

I noticed something I can't explain.

I tried Ubuntu 18.04 and that worked flawlessly.
Then I tried Kubuntu 18.04 and the flicker returns.
I don't know the important differences between these two distros in the
graphics stack to nail down the but.

2020-05-20 Thread Sjoerd Nijboer
Still occurs on 5.4.0-31 update, only less severe. Laptop is useable now as
long as no video is being played.
By the looks of it, i915.enable_psr=0 as kernel boot parameter doesn't have any
notable effect.

Instead of storms of hotplug events on 5.4.0-29, 5.4.0-31 has single hotplug
events that cause a single flicker, instead of a storm of hotplug events.
This makes the system almost useable.

In 5.4.0-31 I noticed something else.

It seems that the first that happens when watching a video or doing some
more heavy graphics related stuff for some reason causes the edp panel
to turn on, while it is already on and displaying video for some amounth
of time.

[Bug 801437] [NEW] parser too strict

2011-06-24 Thread Sjoerd de Vries
Public bug reported:

Hi everyone,
I spent the last few hours mounting and repairing my system from LiveCD because
of a failed update to 11.04. The reason why my system got corrupted was a
parsing error in /var/lib/dpkg/status and /available. It was caused by a .deb
package (compiz-switch) with a Priority: low annotation. Of course this is an
error of the .deb, but it seems to me that the dpkg parser is too strict in
marking it as junk and hanging the whole system on it. Everything worked fine
under 10.10. If the parser would treat any priorities it doesn't understand as
optional, I would be happy.

** Affects: dpkg (Ubuntu)
