The communities artwork should be in tune with whatever the grownups are

if the official gui is -for example- pink.

Why? Where is there anything saying that what we do has to be in line

I have always thought that they should complement each other. When a
user chooses to install the community packages, he or she is looking for
artwork to boost the default install right?
What stops (or what /should/ stop) anyone from coming in and leading an

In this particular example, hopefully the gag reflex. :-)
I am not saying that there should be rules/guidelines on what we can or
cannot produce, I am saying that knowing what the officials are doing
would help us produce complementary artwork, if we wish to.

That's your personal opinion. :) Maybe I or another user wants another

Again, personal feelings. :) Blubuntu is a great theme that many Ubuntu

I don't mean to be a pain at all I just mean to get you thinking a

For sure, *if* Canonical wants anything from us what you are looking for

[ubuntu-art] [Breathe] Shadowing

2009-03-28 Thread Cory K.
I've noticed our shadowing is a bit inconsistent lately.

I'm going to say that everything with a strait-on perspective needs to
have a have a top-down shadow. Except mimes where I feel its fine.

I'm sure there's also a few exceptions here where it makes a little
artistic sense but we should go back and review what's there and see
what should be changed.

I think the new webcam and the update manager icon are 2 I can quickly
think of. I'll review more myself today.

In my experience making icon themes, you tend to make a lot of icons then
decide that the normal shadow doesn't fit on all of them. Finding the optimal
solution might take some time (iterations) and it is something we'll end up
doing again and again.

Shadows on the ground. Yes. As I said in my initial post. Except for
mimes and the occasional artistic exceptions. Objects, actual things,
should cast shadows on the ground. The shadow/halo thing doesn't fit on

Ken,

What is the desire for submissions that missed the cut? My thoughts are
to push them to gnome-look and its sibling sites. Although designed with
Ubuntu in mind they may add value to other open source projects. :)

It would have been nice to see some items land in community-themes but
that effort did not bear fruit. As you plan for Karmic that should be a
topic for discussion.

I'm not sure what the plans are, but Impression seemed to get a lot of
support. Shiki-colors did as well, but I personally think there are
some issues with putting it in the community-themes packages. It's
actually five different themes, they really should have the
corresponding icon themes, ect... I'll be submitting shiki-colors and
gnome-colors packages for Debian soon. Hopefully they'll get accepted.
When they are synced into Karmic we can backport them to Jaunty.

I went ahead and updated my personal branch of community-themes to
remove Dust and New Wave and add Impression. What about Kin, do we
still want it? Are there any other themes that should be added? Should
I ask for this to be uploaded?

Who makes these decisions? The community? If so, how? You?

My branch can be found here:

Hope that helps. It would be a shame for nothing to happen to the package...

Hi Moz,

Thanks for the suggestions, but still no success. This is what i did.

first checked ls /dev/ttyU*

your right there were no ttyUSBO or USB1

so did
-$sudo mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 0
-$sudo mknod /dev/ttyUSB1 c 188 1

voila next time it did ls /dev/ttyU*
i got
/dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/ttyUSB1

edited RC Local with the lines'
sudo -S modprobe usbserial vendor=0x0451 product=0x3401 /home/ram/foo/foo.txt
sudo mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 0
sudo mknod /dev/ttyUSB1 c 188 1

edited the line in wvdial crtcts to crtscts

tried wvdial 93

got error
--- cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0 . No such device

restarted and found that the ttyUSB0 had disappeared so did mknod
again and tried
tried wvdial 93
same error

edited the line containing crtscts and # it out completely

same error.

So back to square one

Very frustrating.

I tried the same thing on Opensuse 11.1 and get the same errors.

 Hi Ram,

So far so good. But why did you not give the mknod command right after
 this, before configuring wvdial

PPPD Options = crtcts multilink usepeerdns lock defaultroute

Wonder why you need PPPD options. I don't with my ETS1201. But there is
a spelling error above. Did you copy-paste? It should be crtscts.
Then tried the options given by Moz and Onkar

 1 Made a file called
 :~$ sudo gedit /etc/rc.local

Added the following lines (without the -S and the path to the password file)
 sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x0451 product=0x3410
 sudo mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 0
 sudo mknod /dev/ttyUSB1 c 188 1
 exit 0

I am currently using the above, but without any modifications to any
/etc/modprobe.d/ . I did that because it might conflict. But no idea. I
also tried everything else, but only the above (without any other
 modifications) works.
Then checked to see if there was a file called /dev/ttyUSB0

 this is the result
  -$ls /dev/ttyu*
 /dev/ttyu0 /dev/ttyu3 /dev/ttyu6 /dev/ttyu9 /dev/ttyuc /dev/ttyuf
 /dev/ttyu1 /dev/ttyu4 /dev/ttyu7 /dev/ttyua /dev/ttyud
 /dev/ttyu2 /dev/ttyu5 /dev/ttyu8 /dev/ttyub /dev/ttyue

 So no ttyUSB0 or 1

You did not look for ttyUSB0, you looked for something with ttyu*, which
 is different than ttyU*.
While setting up in 7.10 the following are the things done
 dmesg

the lines below are dmesg output from 7.10 (note the difference)

after which a rules file is setup
Now we have to make one rule file in
/etc/udev/rules.d/026_ti_usb_3410.rules . with the following lines
 #TI USB 3410

 SUBSYSTEM==usb_device ACTION==add
 SYSFS{idVendor}==0451,SYSFS{idProduct}==3410 \

 SYSFS{bNumConfigurations}==2 \

 SYSFS{bConfigurationValue}==1 \

 RUN+=/bin/sh -c 'echo 2 /sys%p/device/bConfigurationValue'

after which when dmesg is queried we get
 dmesg

 [ 2081.24] usb 1-2: TI USB 3410 1 port adapter converter now

and then the device works well.

 ***
So the question is what is this
 [ 1642.274280] firmware: requesting ti_usb-3410.bin

and why am i getting the /dev/ttyUSB0 error

Since there are many devices being setup would like to know if anyone
has got this device ets2288 working on Ubuntu 8.04 or 8.10

I have been using ETS1201 under Ubuntu 8.04 (64 bit) and earlier under
Ubuntu 8.10 (32 bit) for months now. And in between I also used it under
Kubuntu 8.10 for a short while. And I had no problems. I had problems
only when I tinkered with the config as per advice by Onkar, and my
internet connection stopped working. But I do think that that is a more
correct way of doing, only that someone more knowledgeable than me has
to figure out the exact method, I can not do that.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Continuing Problems with Huawei ETS2288

2009-03-28 Thread Moz
Hi Ram

edited RC Local with the lines'
 sudo -S modprobe usbserial vendor=0x0451 product=0x3401
 /home/ram/foo/foo.txt
 sudo mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 0
 sudo mknod /dev/ttyUSB1 c 188 1
When I was trying the configuration for the first time I did all this
from the command line, not from rc.local or anywhere else. So, lets try
this:

1. Change your rc.local to the original state.
2. Change your /etc/modprobe.d/ to the original state too.
3. run the above commands without the password file, just enter the
password manually, all three in the above sequence.
4. backup your /etc/wvdial.conf and create a clean /etc/wvdial.conf,
with the following lines:

[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Init1 = ATZ
Phone = #777
Username = cdma
Password = cdma
New PPPD = yes
Stupid Mode = 1

This is the exact wvdial.conf I am using. As you can notice, there are
no pppd options.

And try connecting using sudo wvdial. Sometimes, it will take almost 90
seconds to connect, so go make tea or have a cup or coffee or something,
in case it is taking unusually long to connect. It just might after a
long time.

5. If this does not work, try installing minicom or something similar
and try sending commands to the ETS2288 directly using mincom and see if
it responds correctly.

I got my ETS1201 working as above first, used that, and found no one
could deal with running wvdial from the shellprompt, so I have installed

find something about it.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Continuing Problems with Huawei ETS2288

2009-03-28 Thread Ninad Pundalik
Hi,

in the /etc/rc.local there are two lines on top
 #!/bin/sh -e

 # rc.local

does the first line need to be un#ed , tried editing the hash out but
nothing happedn /dev/ttyUSB did not get created on start up

Please do not remove the '#' from the first line. The entire line is
known as a 'shebang' among other names, and is used to tell the system
what shell to run it in. The line has to be the first line in a shell
script, for it to be correctly recognised and run as a shell script
across all systems.

Hope this helps in removing one of your doubts in solving your
problem. Sadly, I don't have the answer to your complete problem.

Hi Aravind,

You need a good hardware for setting up the server, Internet connection with
large amount of bandwidth (atm its bit costly here in India).

This should do. Rest is little work of setting up a script on cron to sync the
files from a master server.

[ubuntu-in] [X-Post] Freenode is looking for donations

2009-03-28 Thread Parthan SR
- Forwarded Content --

I will try to keep this brief and to the point. This message has been
cross posted to several lists which will explain why you might get
more than one copy. I hope you find it informative too. Send all
flames to me, not to the lists.

I'm taking off the other hats I wear for a moment to ask for you or
your company's support of Freenode [1] (technically the Peer-Directed
Projects Center or PDPC) now based in the United Kingdom. For those
that don't know, Freenode is an IRC [2] network supporting Open Source
and Free Software communities globally. Another PDPC activity is the
annual FOSSCON conference in the fall. PDPC is specifically [3]
raising funds in order to be recognized by the UK as an official
charitable organization. This status has many benefits, however they
need to raise a certain amount of money by March, 2009. There are
just a few days left in the fundraising campaign.

Canonical Ltd. (the company created by Mark Shuttleworth that drives
Ubuntu Linux) has graciously stepped forward to provide dollar for
dollar matching, magnifying the impact of your donations to PDPC. The
fund raising goal has almost been reached but your contribution is
needed. Brainstorming by the PDPC board of directors for how to use
any funds not used for operations includes hosting live conference
events in Europe and the US, extending current services and improving
the reliability of the freenode network by hosting a few of their own
hubs and backup systems. Freenode is growing rapidly [4] supporting
up to 57,000 concurrent users up from a maximum of about 40,000 18
months ago.

Some people may not be aware that IRC is used by a huge array of Open
Source and Free Software projects. The list of groups [5] Freenode
works with is truly impressive. I feel it is not at all hyperbole to
say that the work done over freenode and OFTC [6] are the real-time
backbone of open source collaboration throughout the world, Coders
use the IRC network to develop applications used by millions of people
every day and provide *end user support*. If you use any open source
software you may be an indirect beneficiary of the services Freenode
provides. I encourage those who are interested to try launching an
IRC client such as Pidgin [7] and see for yourself. You won't be
sorry you did.

While I have used Freenode for many years, this year I too became a
contributor for the first time. For a one time contribution
http://freenode.net/pdpc_donations.shtml of as little as $8 you can
join me in supporting Freenode and the many Open Source
projects they serve.

Thanks for your consideration,

[Ubuntu-QC] Java annonce OpenOffice...

2009-03-28 Thread Donald Pinet

Merci beaucoup de me mettre à jour,

Hiya,

I've got a USB wireless dongle that uses this chipset and have had
similar problems. There is a very old bug report at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/275302 and I've
emailed the people who are listed as the module developers, but had no
response. It looks like the device just randomly drops a LOT of packets.
I've had a quick look at trying to fix it myself, but I don't really
understand how these things work!

Not very helpful I know, some people have had some success with
ndiswrapper, a horrible hack I know, but if it works?

Hello, Gordon.

I had a similar problem with the Broadcom WiFi chipset on my Asus A6K

 Hello Winton,

Since you are with Internode, why not use the routers that they recommend.
They are a little more expensive than if you were to buy any of them from
another source but they do come to you fully configured with your account
details as well as a warranty.  The warranty means that if you were to
suffer damage to your router, all you have to do is to phone Internode and
they will send you a replacement including a bag to return the damaged
item.  That seems pretty decent of them.

Another advantage is that if you were to use their Nodephone service the
 router is VoIP capable.

Connecting two machines is not a problem, there are four sockets and of
course there is WiFi as well.  Yes, they are plug and play.

My experience with routers is limited but I can tell you that if you have a
Siemens router you will be able to fry an egg on it.

The Billion 7401 looks like it would do the job nicely.

 Thanks for the suggestions,
unfortunately cannot use Internode for broadband, no access here, can
access Telstra NextG wireless, but don't
feel like mortgaging my house to pay for it. Extremely expensive.
After my dial up experience getting dropped off 36 time between Jan 26
and March 26, (stopped logging disconnects after dialog with Telstra)
would rather not any more to do with Telstra than I have to, besides
with satellite I can dump my land line, which I would have to keep if
I went Next G wireless. In my area I have to have a NextG mobile,
 normal mobiles have no coverage.
May still buy router from Internode though, have been very happy with
their service, sorry to be leaving them.
 Thanks again

I've hit this many times and is why I run 2 installs at all times.

Quick fix: Grab latest disk and do a clean install. (better to wait for

Otherwise, wait around for someone who knows how to diagnose better than

Straying from what's shipped with a self-compiled ALSA can also
introduce many problems where you could think it's a Ubuntu bug.

Have you had your self-compiled ALSA work anywhere else? Debian install

My drivers have worked great on Studio until a day or so ago. I have a Creative
X-fi card and I love how it works.
I have also not have any problems running wine sound programs on Studio. Wine
as you probably know is incompatible with pulseaudio, so I have to purge
pulseaudio before I do anything else.
I went on the Ubuntu bug website, and someone else just reported recent sound
problems with wine, and they did not compile their own drivers. So I added info
to that bug. I will also inform the wine site that there may be a problem.

You know what also happened? Updates. ;) Things like kernel updates
happen that will make you rebase you compiled drivers aginst these new
changes. Make sure you have latest kernel headers and all that.

Also just watch what you call a bug when you're not using the distro as
designed. More often that not, it's user error. I can't tell you how
many times even now I personally just missed something.

If you are completely up to date (note that you have to make sure you
have all current headers and such installed. don't just rely on the
update manager) and you purged then re-compiled drivers still don't
work, hopefully we can get you some help and see if this really is a bug.

tapco Link.MIDI - works

2009-03-28 Thread Atom Smasher
here's one for the archives. last i checked, there was no info about using
this with ubuntu-studio.

http://www.tapcoworld.com/products/linkmidi/index.html

i just got a chance to test this out, and it just works. all 4 ports
show up. for the price ($50-60 US) it seems to beat anything else i've
seen, especially since it doesn't require any extra (proprietary)
packages.

i even upgraded the firmware without any problems: download the windows
installer; unzip; use amidi to send the sysex file; wait for the lights to
turn off; unplug; re-plug; done.

i haven't done any torture-testing, just midi dumps. i'm planning on just
using it for backing up midi stuff to the computer, so for me it passed
the test.

2009-03-28 Thread Cristina Fernandes Silva

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#dvd
Don't be confused, even though DVDs can hold far more data than the typical
Ubuntu CD, the main benefit of the DVD downloads is to get access to all of
the available language packs. *Most people will be fine with the standard CD
installer.

Don't be confused, even though DVDs can hold far more data than the typical
Ubuntu CD, the main benefit of the DVD downloads is to get access to all of
the available language packs. *Most people will be fine with the standard CD

[Ubuntu-BR] Aumentando Partição Swap

2009-03-28 Thread Nilson Chagas
Pessoal, estou precisando instalar o Oracle Xe, e ele tá me pedindo pelo

Alguém pode me ajudar???

É estranho o GParted não mostrar. Caso tenhas o Windows instalado, tenta com
o Partition Magic.

Valew a dica ae pessoal.

link http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/linux/install/xe-on-kubuntu.html

E com este comando:dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1M count=600

Resolvi o problema, estou no meio da instalção.

Obrigado.

Editing Ubiquity

2009-03-28 Thread linux
Dear all,
We are trying to edit Ubiquity's Dialog Boxes in order to make a
customised Version of Ubuntu using Remastersys. We have edited the .glade
files available at -/usr/share/ubiquity/glade. But the change is not
reflected in the ISO built by Remastersys.

How can we change the Ubiquity's Dialog Box Texts to make a custom version
of Ubuntu for our internal use?

please help us.

RE: ubuntu purpose

2009-03-28 Thread MAILLAN-XID, Stephane
Thanks for your fast answer

In the meantime I downloaded kickseed and looked at code and figured out that
you handled %include directive.

There was no error in syslog because I was making use of the syntax :

%pre
(

python .

} /tmp/pre.log 2 1

So STDERR and STDOUT were redirected
After removing this redirection I relooked at syslog again and in same time of
your answer i have the following :

kickseed: /var/spool/kickseed/parse/pre.section: line 6: python: not found
kickseed: /var/spool/kickseed/parse/pre.section: line 9: python: not found

So I will definitively wget to make what python was doing or maybe use wget to
retrieve the python interpreter to execute my python code.

I was using python to import file but also to perform some stuff about the
particular option :

part swap --recommended

this option is not well programmed in anaconda and do not even respect the own
RedHat specification in regards on amount of memory and corresponding swap that
has to be sized.

My own python code do what the specification say and this is why I execute it
in %pre section to dynamically create the needed amount of swap
(if you want I can share this part of code)

Is there any chance to ever have python available for %pre , or maybe it is
more on purpose to add it directly in the netboot image ???

Another question regarding kickseed is the support of option : kssendmac

I do not success to have this working and finally I added directly the MAC like
this :

ks=http://my_cgi_script_that_generate_ks_fileMAC=

Finaly I do not define me as an expert programmer but I have some experience in
automatic deployment and if there is a need to help on kickseed this will be
with pleasure.

Thanks again
Regards
Stephane

Please use my Ubuntu e-mail address rather than my personal one. In
future, ubuntu-installer@lists.ubuntu.com would be better anyway.

I would like to know if the %include directive of kickstart is
supported within kickseed , here is the process :

Yes, it is.

%pre section import the disk partitioning scheme and the package list within
 /tmp (/tmp/disk_profile and /tmp/pkg_profile)
The import is done with python call :

 python -c import
 urllib;urllib.urlretrieve('http://${PATH}/${DISK_PROFILE}','/tmp/disk_profile')
 python -c import
 urllib;urllib.urlretrieve('http://${PATH}/${PKG_PROFILE}','/tmp/pkg_profile')

You can't use python in %pre sections in Ubuntu Kickstart files, though;
it isn't available in the installation environment. Only the shell is
available. Instead, you can use the wget command to fetch files from the
network.

/var/log/syslog indicate that pre script exited in 0 exit status

I'm surprised that there wasn't some indication in the syslog that this
failed because python doesn't exist. The exited with error code 0
rather than a non-zero code is a bug, obvious now that I look at it;
I'll get that fixed.

[Bug 350291] [NEW] Samba cannot resolv ip

2009-03-28 Thread Ravic
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu version: Jaunty Beta
Samba Version: 2:3.3.2-1ubuntu3

My environment is a wireless LAN at my home, with a router that is a bridge to
every pc as client with 192.168.1.XXX subnet ip range.
I cannot browse samba's share neither with nautilus, nor with smbclient, nor
with smbtree...
I can browse only my own shared folder, but, when I try to browse other
client's shares, any client looks at a wrong ip...

The samba server is configured correctly. In fact, if I use windows, I
can access all the shared folders. So the problem is the client.

This is my smbtree output, where PC-CHIARA is a WIndows client.

WORKGROUP
\\PC-CHIARA
timeout connecting to 195.210.87.131:445

\\LORD-LAPTOP\printer LaserJet 1018

I can solve this problem by adding the correct ip of PC-CHIARA in /etc/hosts,
but it is useless if that PC uses a dynamic ip.

I think if the error prompt for this type of issue should be the
following:

It is possible the hostname %my-hostname is already in use on the network. A
hostname is a unique name that identifies your system on a Local Area Network
(LAN). To connect to %some-computer please enter a new and unique hostname:

Re: Atteindre menu.lst sur autre disque

 Michel Andreu a écrit :
