Envoyé: 18 avr, 2010 22:18

Hi there,

Hackers -are- saving the Planet at eth0:2010 Summer this August !

eth0:2010 Summer will be held from the 10th until the 13th of August in
Wieringerwerf, NL.

Regulars will recognize this location as the location of the 2008 summer
event and our (indoor) winter events.

As usual with our events, there's a busy schedule of lectures, workshops,
camping goodness and our spectacular lounge and bar like the one we did at
HAR2009 and our previous winter event.

The ticket shop for this summer's only Dutch hacker event is open for
business!
 https://secure.eth-0.nl/tickets/

Be sure to get your ticket early, as the first 100 tickets will be
eligable for a 35 euro discount. But if you can spare the money, think
about buying the regular ticket.

More info will follow on our website http://eth-0.nl/ , our wiki
http://wiki.eth-0.nl/index.php/Main_Page and please consider following our
twitter account (*...@*eth0_2010),

See you at 'Het Boshuis' this summer!

hacker greetings,
The eth0 crew.

2010-04-24 Thread Ramnarayan.K
2010/4/24 Mallikarjun mallik.v.ar...@gmail.com:
On second thoughts had some more questions
 1. What will google do with the mobile phone numbers (general question)

I don't think this question is valid. Bcoz, Google has way more valuable
information than your mobile number, like all your chats, e-mails, browsing
habits, and much more. I think you should be concerned about them rather
than mobile numbers. Maximum one can do with mobile number is sell to
 spammers.

true, i agree fully

however its not like if a phone number appears in an email google can
just take it, in this case we are legally giving it to them.

 2. Won't the folks cracking an account also start by changing the
 recovery information,

Mostly one can crack into your E-mail system via recovery options, unless
you have obvious passwords like password123.
Once they crack into, you can do very little if cracker changes password...
but they wont do that. They want to spy what you do.

My answer is It depends on the cracker.

so no really safe options, if i look at what all is in my gmall
already its quite easy for a cracker to just unplug me and become me,
absolutely scary, in fact i think i am going to start deleting mails
and reducing the size of my gmail account. Keep stuff offline

I changed the password within minuted after it was cracked but the harm was

Most crackers don't change password because they want to hide behind the
scene and spy the account.
Also no professional cracker will reveal his true IP address, the hide it.
So I think it a snooped IP address...

Also avoid top posting.

This entire topic is OT I think...

Anyway, I would suggest not to believe such proxy servers because, say

Without proxy -- Google will store all our browsing activites
With proxy -- Some one else (googlesharing.net) will have a chance to store
our browsing activites

Which is better??? I feel Google servers are more safe..

Worrying about Google cutting one off is a reasonable concern, as
there have apparently been such cases, and Google reserves the
right to do that.

However, being unable to download from Gmail is probably just a
configuration issue. I have used Google with Evolution till I
stopped using Evolution. However, this *was* before 2007, though I
am surprised to hear that it has problems with Gmail. Anyone
else using Evolution, Thunderbird, etc., with Gmail care to comment?

I have been using claws-mail happily for several years now, and it
has absolutely no problem with Gmail.

I have been using claws-mail happily for several years now, and it
has absolutely no problem with Gmail.

Am not sure when the problem originated, maybe it had something to do
with large attachments and some problems on my part with thunderbird.

You would know that in gmail when one enables pop services it offers
either from the beginning or from the current date, there is no option
for a randome user defined date.

So after about 2 years (2005, 06) of happy thunderbird and gmail
syncing in 2007 something when wrong maybe a changed distro or
something i cannot be sure and thunderbird stopped downloading gmail.
(i have used thnderbird in dual mode - i.e used by both M$ and linux
at the same time) and have upgraded thnderbird and the dsitribution
editions (it has always been ubuntu since 2005).

In an attempt to rectify the situation i reached a place with
broadband and attempted to restart the downloads - this is about mid
2007 when gmail / thunderbird got stuck. It did not work

I tried to migrate to evolution - this did not work

I redid my pop to again start from the begiining on a totally fresh
thunderbird install - and after a few days (stop start because of
internet access) it got stuck exactly at midway 2007.

After that i gave up , only recently i tried kontact and was happy to
note that it had begun downloading my mails from the stoppped point
and as of now its reached dec 2007.

However what does happen is that every time kontact starts up it and
begins downloading it shows me say as of now
201,608 kb remaining, downloading 106kb of 507 kb

The latter part is what is relevant - this would have started off at
say downloading xx of 11000 kb and as the days progress it continues
to reduce.

The overall remaining kb reduces but the immediate download figure
will grind to 0 and all downloading will stop.

The thing is i cannot figure out what is the issue and what there
should be this reducing inward flow.

Thats the reason for searching for an alternative to being able to
download gmail.

Bonjour Ronan!

direct...

merci encore pour l'aide!

hehe, I am not geeky, the opposite actually. Most of what I know, even
in windows is self taught, and I am 50, which makes it heard to remember
things, but I keep trying, most would say I'm very trying.

I am trying to learn the Terminal as well. Yesterday, on my website, I
needed to set up a database, phpmyadmin I just didnt have a clue about
it, cant get my head round it at all. I ended up setting up the db using
the terminal, and it worked first time. Talk about shocked. It was the
best feeling going.

I like using the interface of Ubuntu, but I also find that using the
Terminal can be so much easier sometimes, especially if you can find an
easy way of working out how to use it. That is why I stick with Ubuntu.
The problem is, sometimes the explanations of how to use the terminal
are over my head, and completely confusing. Which is why I am finding it
hard to learn faster.

Another problem I had, which bought the other thread up about the log in
screen, was my Netbook, couldnt get it past the log in screen, which
kept showing up every couple of minutes doing the final update for
Lucid. Finally, I got a message saying something about going into
reduced graphics mode. I ended up going into the grub, clicking on the
recovery mode option, and fixing it. Using the bit that had the 'fix
broken bits' option, then doing updates using the non graphical
interface, and now it works, like a dream. Well, it did last night, I
have to turn it on again this morning.

Somebody very kindly advised me to get more RAM memory for my Netbook,
but it being an Acer One, and having looked at the way you add extra
memory to it, I cant do it. Has anybody ever added extra memory for an
Acer One. I would like to get more added, as I quite like the little
machine.

[ubuntu-uk] Joggler Remote Desktop sharing

2010-04-24 Thread Colin Law
Hi

I am trying to get remote desktop sharing working with my O2 Joggler
running Karmic UNE. I had to install vino and it works in the sense
that I can connect, see the screen, move and click the mouse and type
things, but the screen does not seem to be updating properly,
sometimes it does not update when the joggler display changes. Has
anyone successfully used vino on the joggler? I have seen freenx
mentioned as an alternative, again has anyone tried it? It seems a
little more complex to setup so I am just checking whether anyone has
already tried before I give it a go. Perhaps there is another better
alternative?

This is almost certain due to the fact that UNR has a compiz-style

As always, in case of downtimes and lack of mirror servers, the list

-- Forwarded message --
From: Steve Langasek steve.langa...@ubuntu.com
Date: 22 April 2010 17:32
Subject: Announcing the Release Candidate for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
To: ubuntu-annou...@lists.ubuntu.com

The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the Release Candidate for Ubuntu
10.04 LTS (Long-Term Support) Desktop and Server Editions and Ubuntu 10.04
LTS Server for Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC) and Amazon's EC2, as well as
Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition.  Codenamed Lucid Lynx, 10.04 LTS continues
Ubuntu's proud tradition of integrating the latest and greatest open source
technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.

We consider this release candidate to be complete, stable, and suitable for
testing by any user.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition and Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition continue
the trend of ever-faster boot speeds, with improved startup times and a
streamlined, smoother boot experience.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server Edition provides even better integration of the
Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, with its install-time cloud setup.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server for UEC and EC2 brings the power and stability of
the Ubuntu Server Edition to cloud computing, whether you're using Amazon
EC2 or your own Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud.

The Ubuntu 10.04 family of variants, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu
Studio, and Mythbuntu, also reach beta status today.

The final release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is scheduled for 29 April 2010 and
will be supported for three years on desktops and five years on servers.

Before installing or upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, please review the
instructions and caveats in the release notes:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/1004

In addition, there are a small number of known bugs in the release candidate
that will be fixed before the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS release, but warrant
highlighting for your attention:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/1004overview#Known%20issues

About The Release Candidate
---

The purpose of the Release Candidate is to solicit one last round of testing
before the final release. Here are ways that you can help:

 * Upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS or Ubuntu 9.10 to the Release Candidate by
following the instructions in the release notes referenced above.

 * Participate in installation testing using the Release Candidate CD
images, by following the testing and reporting instructions at
  http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO

Desktop features

Social from the start:  We now feature built-in integration with Twitter,
identi.ca, Facebook, and other social networks with the MeMenu in the panel.

New Design: Cleaner and faster boot, new notification area, new themes, new
icons, and new wallpaper bring a dramatically updated look and feel to
Ubuntu.

Ubuntu One: Synchronize any folder in your home directory, publish files to
share with the Internet directly from your Ubuntu desktop, manage more sync
settings with the Ubuntu One Preferences application, use Rhythmbox to
choose from millions of songs available for purchase in the Ubuntu One Music
Store.  Learn more at:

 http://one.ubuntu.com/blog

Server features
---

Cloud computing:  The Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud installer has been vastly
improved in order to support alternative installation topologies. UEC
components are now automatically discovered and registered, even when
the storage controller, cluster controller and walrus are installed on
different servers. Finally, UEC is now powered by the latest Eucalyptus
version 1.6.2.

UEC and EC2:  Ubuntu 10.04 LTS continues the tradition of official Ubuntu
Server image releases for UEC and for Amazon's EC2, giving you everything
you need for rapid deployment of Ubuntu instances in a cloud computing
environment. UEC images, and information on running Ubuntu 10.04 on EC2, are
available at:

 http://uec-images.ubuntu.com/releases/10.04/rc

Stability and security:  Ubuntu 10.04 LTS brings many improvements over
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS to keep your servers safe and secure for the next five
years, including AppArmor profiles for many key services, kernel hardening,
and an easy-to-configure firewall.

Ubuntu Netbook features
---

Ubuntu Netbook Edition is optimised to run on Intel atom based netbooks. It
includes a new consumer-friendly interface that allows users to quickly and
easily get on-line and use their favourite applications. This interface is
optimised for a retail sales environment.

It includes the same faster boot times and improved boot experience as
Ubuntu desktop.

Old LP's and records

2010-04-24 Thread Ferdinand Lehnard
Hi mates,

I just would like to inform you that ALDI (NSW) had last week a USB
turntable (record player) in their shops which is usable to copy your
old records onto CD. The most surprising stuff was that the software
package delivered was Audacity. Seeing this I thought, that could be
something for my UBUNTU machine and just bought it even it was no
mentioning of LINUX on the package.

Today I tried it and worked out of the box, I was not even forced to
load the Installation CD. All you need is AUDACITY. I am using still
UBUNTU 8.04 just for your info.

Ferdinand,

How did you find the device itself? My parents recently bought a device
similar to that from the catchoftheday (I realise you can get high quality
ones for hundreds of dollars, this one was 60 - 80 ish from memory).
Unfortunately the device skipped across the records so badly they threw it
out after ruining one of their records. Upon seeing it had installed
audacity I advised them it would be cheaper to purchase an RCA to 3.5mm
Stereo lead and just play it using the high quality record player they
already own using the lead to the line in on their onboard sound card. They
haven't had a chance to try this yet but I was curious to see what your
experience was like.

Re: Old LP's and records

2010-04-24 Thread Steve Thomas
Jared,

will that work? I had to connect my very old BO turntable to the hifi via a
pre-amp. I assumed I would also need a pre-amp to connect to my laptop. Did
try connecting thru the pre-amp and using LPripper, but seemed not to be
getting proper audio through.

Also, the BO has a DIN connector. But I guess I could use an adaptor.

Of course, another way to get those old vinyl tracks is to rip them from
Youtube. ;)

Steve,

As soon as both my father and I both have spare time together I'll let you
know how it goes. His turntable is connected through an amplifier to
speakers so I was thinking of taking a line out off the amplifier (as I have
been informed the turntable will probably not generate enough by itself). I
am not sure how the quality of it all will go or not but as long as it's
usable I'm sure the parents won't mind.

Hi Jared,

it's from the catch-of-the day. The quality is so far o. k.. It's
running fine and to create .ogg files good enough. I can' t say it's
jumping, yet! May in your case it's the record what is jumping. I have
two of those, they look like stormy sea. They also jump on my high end
turntable.

Of course for a price of $ 69 you can not expect too much, but I am
already happy to found a way to get my old records archived.

Hi Jared and Steve

I don't believe that it will work, as far as I know a pre-amplifier has
to be used to get something out.

Also the Aldi one has an output for audio devices - I didn't tried yet.
I just used the supplied usb cable and connected straight into my laptop
(usb 2.0) opened up Audacity and - what a surprise - the whole stuff was
just working.

  Hi,
I upgraded to Lucid 64 last night - It was nice and pretty painless, I
have almost every thing working but for a couple of things

 1. The Mouse does not display its selected icon when its over the
desktop. It renders ok over opened applications and browsers but over the
desktop its a plain white pointer.

 2. the Boot splash screen has not changed and its rendered really
horribly. The resolution is completely out of whack and no amount of
rejigging in the start up manager seems to be able to rectify this.

 Any ideas??

barra superior do Gnome !!!

 REGEDIT4

 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
 FontSmoothing=2
 FontSmoothingType=dword:0002
 FontSmoothingGamma=dword:0578
 FontSmoothingOrientation=dword:0001

Salve e depois execute no terminal :

 regedit fontes.reg

 Linux

 Cleartype do XP

Customized!

2010-04-24 Thread Night Bats

Есть KDE 4.3.2 в Kubuntu 9.10.

Desktop Theme Details.

Customized
Oxygen, gtk+, Plastique,
СDE и.т.

l8gravely Soren I expect to fix this before Lucid releases.

l8gravely Do you have a repository I could pull from for testing? Or your own

That would be great. Five days before the official Lucid release, I
could really use a working vm-builder.

[Bug 569394] [NEW] Can't use kvm -curses with virtual or ec2 kernels

2010-04-24 Thread Loïc Minier
Public bug reported:

Hi

I'd like to run kvm -kernel kernel file -hda UEC image -append
/proc/cmdline stuff but this fails badly with both the EC2 and Virtual
kernels.

With the files from:
http://uec-images.ubuntu.com/lucid/current/unpacked/

Trying to run:
kvm -kernel lucid-server-uec-amd64-vmlinuz-ec2 -hda lucid-server-uec-amd64.img
-curses -append root=/dev/sda
or:
kvm -kernel lucid-server-uec-amd64-vmlinuz-virtual -hda
lucid-server-uec-amd64.img -curses -append root=/dev/sda

Fails awfully.

I tried all combinations of nomodeset, vga=none, modeset=0,
vga.nomodeset, vga.modeset=0, vga=ask and what not, but all failed.

During the early kernel init, the VGA adapter emulated by kvm switches to
graphics mode after:
[...]
[1.073901] EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
[1.074640] VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly on device 8:0.
[1.075983] devtmpfs: mounted
[1.076955] Freeing unused kernel memory: 796k freed
[1.093995] Write protecting the kernel read-only data: 7788k

I just get 640 x 480 Graphic mode filling my whole remote terminal,
and can't interact with the curses vm anymore.

the -ec2 kernels in particular give some spectacularly corrupted output.

Thanks,

[Bug 562146] Re: Integrate nagios users with system ones

2010-04-24 Thread Philipp Kern
I was sure that libpam to acces shadow uses some suid helper program.
So i was wrong about it...

There is a suid helper program in pam_unix, called unix_chkpwd. But for
obvious reasons it only allows to check the password of the current
user, which is in turn used by programs like gnome-screensaver to verify
the password. It does not work for brute-forcing or checking any other
user's password.

[Bug 566792] Re: UEC guests sometimes fail on consuming user data (metadata service isn't ready)

2010-04-24 Thread Scott Moser
more testing has led me to the following:
a.) I cannot reproduce the 200 OK response with empty metadata that we see in
the data center rig on my own hardware. That is still an issue.
b.) It appears that in all my tests the metadata service eventually *does* come
up. On average in my tests (hundreds if not thousands), the metadata service
is up after less than 10 seconds. However, in cases where it is not it doesn't
seem to come up until something around 2 minutes.

The solution to 'b' from the instances perspective is to simply retry
for much longer than we initially were (which was ~ 30 seconds).

this is quite problematic for any sort of automated testing, because you
essentially cannot call a system failed for several minutes. Both my
tests and mathias' tests give up after less than a minute of
unreachability and call the instance failed.

We may have to redesign tets to accomodate this.

I will also say, though, that I've not seen a single case of metadata
service not available on ec2 in the past 9 months. They seem to have
fixed that issue that was present previously.

I plan on putting some better code in the wait for metadata service,
complete with waiting (indefinitely) for a non-empty value in instance-
id (which would work around the 200-OK failure, and give us a chance to
catch it an debug when it does fail).

[Bug 569394] Re: Can't use kvm -curses with virtual or ec2 kernels

2010-04-24 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Loic-

Try adding fb=0 on your kernel line (or it might be fb=false).

I used to be able to hack the ISO itself with:

 * sed -i s/initrd.gz quiet --/initrd.gz fb=0 -- / hardy.iso

I just tried it with current Lucid ISOs and this doesn't work any more
since we've moved to the world of Plymouth on servers too.

I also just tried:

kvm -kernel lucid-server-uec-amd64-vmlinuz-virtual -hda lucid-server-
uec-amd64.img -curses -append root=/dev/sda fb=0

This, too, works, until we go into graphic mode. Plymouth, I suppose?

I'll mark confirmed, as I can reproduce this.

However, this bug isn't in qemu-kvm itself. It's in Ubuntu's userspace,
with whatever is not detecting and respecting the fb=0 and vga-off
parameters. Scott, do you know what this would be, and how to disable
it properly?
