Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu DVD Packaging Artwork
Ok, here's the deal. @Thirukumaran K - I'm not sure that some organic shapes would fit nicely in a design of this kind, with minimalistic and /as sleek as it could be/ approach. I was experimenting with a lot of patterns, textures, and different shapes to fill the background with, but I didn't like how it turned out to be, every time. :/ But I will continue my work on Ubuntu DVD covering, that's for sure. We want a perfect Ubuntu DVD cover, right? :) @Angus - I guess you don't like this cover at all, right? :) Just kidding. Well, maybe the Gnome and the Linux kernel logos are not that relevant to just Ubuntu concretely, but they are very relevant as Linux iconography, and probably they are most known and recognised Linux related logos. So considering fact that I tried to make universal DVD cover, I wanted to add some visual identity of Linux itself, not just Ubuntu. And for many people, especially ones not that involved in Linux world, Ubuntu = Linux. And being honest, Ubuntu actually IS the most relevant Linux represent today, so why not adding some Linux iconography on Ubuntu cover. As for the visualy identity with Ubuntu webside... I never wanted my covers to look like part of some Canonical DVD Cover Contest, but I'm trying to keep my work within official Cannonical/Ubuntu color palette at least, and ofcourse official logos, and font. But yes, I was trying to do something more similar to Ubuntu website, just before I finished this last one. But I'm not satisfied, and it needs more polishing. It's a great concept. I think you need something that's more definitively Ubuntu, though. And the design should be as timeless as the cover itself. @Tulio - I have it in psd format only, cause I'm still using Photoshop, and I will upload it on SpreadUbuntu so I will send you a link. @Angus - It is quite hard to achieve timeless design, that will look fresh and actual, today, and after x years. That's why I said before that if we're gonna make timeless cover, we should avoid current Ubuntu visual identity, like official website look or actual artwork (official Ubuntu CD sleeves). Cause it will change over years for sure. Color palette and Ubuntu font are the only things I think we should stick with. A lot of offtopic posts here... :) Someone said that at least colours should be changed from release to release. I agree, but I'm more familiar with idea to create a special, different cover, for each LTS release, and to keep cover for rolling releases, with maybe just some color palette adjusments. Considering this Ps vs GIMP topic that you started, I'm using Photoshop for almost 10 years, and I really want to master GIMP with all of it's powers, but I'm still not even close to what can I achieve with Photoshop. Maybe I just can't get used to new workspace, and different rules. But to be honest, it's hard to believe that GIMP will ever beat Ps, and it should not beat it at all. many people will be satisfied with what GIMP could do. And you can not compare Ps with Inkscape, it's not same category of software, but somebody already said that. Hi A few weeks back we started teaching young people how to access and use a computer. we have 2 Ubuntu Machines and one OLPC The OLPC is good to allow people a feel of a computer, its got some nice features and it can be played around with. Team Meeting Tomorrow Night
Good evening Ubuntu-AU'ers, Just a quick reminder that tomorrow night we have our February Team meeting. All the agenda items so far are listed at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam/Meetings and please feel free to contribute your own. If you are unable to make the meeting but want to have your say on an issue please contact list so you can be heard. Please note that as discussed at the previous meeting we have moved this meeting an hour forward to try and be more accommodating to those living in daylight savings areas so it's now on at 8pm in Qld, 9pm in NSW/ACT/VIC/TAS, 830pm in SA 6pm in WA. At least I think that's correct, I really really despise multiple time zones. Please come along and feel free to contribute your ideas and thoughts or even just have a look in to see how it all works (it's not that secret or complicated, honest!). Point #2 is the most compelling argument for me so far, but your other points are good ones too. I do plan to run my analysis over universe, but as it takes a fairly long time just for main, I haven't started that yet. Now that Squeeze is out, Piotr is planning on enabling 2.7 in testing, though I think he needs to wait for Matthias to upload a new python-defaults. I'm also going to start going through the known Python 2.7 related bugs in Debian and see which ones have already been fixed in Ubuntu, submitting those fixes where appropriate. The major benefit associated with removal is getting a little CD space back. Since all the ISOs are down to where they fit without this, I think we shouldn't worry about it so much for this cycle. I'm all for dropping it early (like during the toolchain phase) of Natty +1, but I don't see much in the way of benefit with removal now while I do see significant risks. This sounds like the most reasonable approach to me. It also gives us another two cycles to fix more things before 12.04 LTS is out. -Barry signature.asc Description: PGP signature -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel
Re: Analysis of Python 2.7 support in Natty
On Feb 04, 2011, at 01:24 AM, Krzysztof Klimonda wrote: From your experience with main, were there many issues with backward-incompatible changes in Python 2.7? Not too many, but here are a few I've seen: * Some packages just aren't prepared to be buildable against multiple versions of Python. In all cases I've seen, enabling one or the other worked fine. In these cases debian/rules or other build-related files needed fixing. These aren't incompatibilities in the package itself, just naivete in the packaging. * There have been a few run-time or byte-compile-time incompatibilities. A recent example was assignment to __debug__ as an attribute of an object. This was illegal in 2.6 also, but not enforced by the interpreter. It's enforced in 2.7. * C extensions. There was a case or two where a package used an internal (i.e. not public) Python C API that changed between 2.6 and 2.7. It was not too difficult to port the code and wrap it in a #if test of the C API version number. * Changed module APIs. I know Bazaar hit one in a standard library module, though I forget the details. (urlopen perhaps?) * Other oddities. An example is the subversion package where a handful of tests simply fail for difficult to debug reasons. Fedora and Debian have hit the same thing, and it's definitely a bug in upstream. My emails to upstream have been met with silence though, and all distros I know of just disable the offending tests (it's harder for Debian/Ubuntu because we only want to disable the tests for 2.7, while Fedora doesn't support multiple versions of supported Pythons). The second issue is of a different matter - I just don't feel that we should bless PPAs as official, as long as there is no way to distinguish them from the unofficial ones in the Launchpad interface. This is true - I wish PPAs could be designated official, and I know the issue is on the LP team's radar, though I have no inside information about ETA of that. Still, I think if we clearly document the PPA's location on LP's dev wiki, that would be enough. LP developers are going to have to deal with this sooner than the data centers, since Canonicalites are required to update their desktops to the latest version of Ubuntu when it hits beta. If 11.04 were the LTS, I'd most likely be against dropping Python 2.6 from the archive, but I don't know if we can actually carry 2.6 all the way to the next LTS. We may end up having the same discussion in 6 months, when we run out of space on CD and can't cut anything else off. If it's the alternative then dropping 2.6 now leaves us with more time to work on any unexpected issues. I like Scott's suggestion. Keep 2.6 for Natty and drop it asap during toolchain updates for Natty+1. That should give us time to work out more kinks before the next LTS. -Barry signature.asc Description: PGP signature -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel
Release Targeting and Milestones
I've recently been reviewing bug reports that are targeted for a release of Ubuntu or have a milestone set. From what I've observed there is a disparity between https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RCBugTargetting and what really happens. Examples of the disparity I've found include: Bug tasks having a milestone set which are release critical sometimes are not targeted to the release. The wiki page indicates that these should have a release task. I believe the error here is not with the wiki page but with not targeting the bug to the release. Bug tasks being targeted to the release (e.g. having a Natty task) and not being assigned to anyone. The wiki page indicates that the tasks should have an assignee. It is important for bugs to be on release team's radar especially if they don't have an assignee so I think the wiki page should be modified in this case. -- Brian Murray Ubuntu Bug Master signature.asc Description: Digital signature -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel

We'd like to release new language packs for it, although we're getting a bit too close to the deadline, and the Ubuntu Release Team will make the ultimate decision whether we'll be releasing them or not. Because of this, we'll try to strike a compromise. So here's the plan: 1. Lucid translations will be exported from Launchpad today, at 22:00 UTC. Until that time, you'll have time to do translations that will be included in the next Lucid language pack. 2. There is an Ubuntu Release Team meeting today at 16:00. There, it will be discussed whether we can release the language packs or not (i.e. if the schedule is too tight). 3. I'll follow up with an e-mail after that meeting, letting you know about the outcome (i.e. if Lucid language packs will be released or not). That will give you confirmation whether you can continue doing the translations or not. I just thought I'd give you a heads up early enough, so that if you've got any critical Lucid translations you'd like to fix or complete you have at least a few hours until 22:00 UTC. But remember that the confirmation whether these translations will be part of the 10.04.2 release will not come until this afternoon after the Release Team meeting. I apologise for the short notice. Regards, David. [1] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidReleaseSchedule Ok, so this is just a short e-mail to confirm that we're going to release language packs for Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS (Lucid). I'll give you more detailed information on Monday when we've built the language packs and start testing, but here's the rundown: * You can translate Lucid until today, at 22:00 UTC * The language packs for testing will be generated during the weekend, and they will be uploaded to lucid-updates * They will need to be tested as usual before being released. Assuming the weekend build works fine, the testing period will begin on Monday and finish on Thursday. More details will follow on Monday. * We'll need to test them quick, as the schedule is tight, so if you could provide the testing feedback before Thursday, that'd be awesome: the sooner the better. Thanks. Regards, David. Hi translators, It seems that there have been some problems building the Firefox translations in the Lucid language packs, so they are not still available for testing yet. We'll see if they can be built tomorrow. In any case, even if they can't and we miss the 10.04.2 release window, we'll update the language packs immediately after. I'll keep you posted.
