[ubuntu-in] Ubuntu 11.10 to be called Oneiric Ocelot

2011-03-07 Thread Manish Sinha
Hi everyone,

Mark just announced on his blog that Ubuntu 11.10 will be called
Oneiric Ocelot
http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/646

Quoted from his blog
-- Oneiric means “dreamy”, and the combination with Ocelot reminds
me of the way innovation happens: part daydream, part discipline.

Ocelot is a nocturnal wildcat of Central America and South America

PS: I guess many people will be facing problems pronouncing Oneiric

As always, it is an open event and everybody is welcome. If you something

2011-03-07 Thread Narendra Diwate
The names are Interesting an part and parcel of the marketing spiel
necessary to generate interest. No issues with that.

I consider the 6 month release cycles too fast for comfort. Once a year
should be a good time frame.
Especially in a place like India where Internet access and speeds are too
low to justify mass download and upgrade/update every few days/months. Of
course we are far from the stage where we need to seriously worry because
the base itself its too pidly. Anything that increases awareness and user
acceptance/comfort/trust is fine. Let them have more names to get people on
board.

[ubuntu-in] Membership to ubuntu-in?

2011-03-07 Thread Nitesh Mistry
While crawling the ubuntu wiki today, I stumbled upon these two[0][1] wiki
pages on ubuntu-in members and ubuntu-in promoters[2]. The crux was to
acknowledge the contribution towards local community by giving them
@ubuntu-in.org email aliases (akin to ubuntu membership). Somehow, I think
the project didn't take off as no activity is seen after late 2008.

Should the project be revived? I am inclined to say yes, as that something
extra always encourages to be more involved with the community.

If the administrator/member of that group is reading this mail, please
share your ideas/experiences if you would like to.

Bonjour ou bonsoir,

Bonjour Matt,

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX= vga=795 splash quiet

On

Sorry about the previous post - gmail went squiffy I've got an N900
too - great device - shame about the lack of future for Maemo/Meego on Nokia
handsets. There's a great community for the device though and loads of
useful apps/information.

I have to say though, that the way I sync information with Evolution is via
a MS Exchange server that we use at work. It works really well for OTA
synchronisation - and syncs pretty much all the information that you
mention,

If you want to sync gmail contacts with the phone and with Evolution, I
suspect the only way is to sync both the device and Evolution with Gmail
itself -rather than to sync the phone with the netbook.

There's an article on syncing gmail and evolution here -
http://www.linux.com/news/software/applications/8226-how-to-sync-evolution-with-googles-pim-apps

Does this help at all?

[ubuntu-uk] OT but geeky: Chuck Season 1 on Five Star

2011-03-07 Thread Rob Beard

Hi folks,

I thought this might interest some of you...

5 Star (which I gather is one of the Channel 5 spin off channels,
formally known as Fiver) is showing the US TV show Chuck starting with
the first ever episode tomorrow (8th March 2011) at 9pm.

For those who have never heard of Chuck, it's a show about a regular
computer geek who works in the Nerd Herd of his local 'Buymore' store
(think Currys/Comet). He's sent an e-mail from an old college friend
which turns out to be a classified government computer called the
'Intersect' which leaves Chuck with lots of government secrets in it
which get stuck in his head.

I've watched the show religiously since it first started and I can say
it's a great show. My wife is also a big fan and she's not very geeky
at all. It has something that appeals to everyone and it's a really
funny show with a dedicated following.

There is some great casting in the show, especially in Season 2 where it
features Chevy Chase as a kind of 'Steve Jobs' type character and Scott
Bakula as Chuck's father, and in Season 4, Timothy Dalton as Alexi
Volkoff (a Russian arms dealer) and Linda Hamilton as Chuck's mum (and
Volkoff's love interest).

So, as a long time Chuck fan, I'd say if you haven't seen it before,
you'd be well worth giving it a try. In the states they are up to
Season 4 so there's a fair few episodes to watch and hopefully if it
proves to be popular Channel Five will show all four seasons.

So remember to tune in at 9pm...

Freeview channel 30
Sky channel 176
or Virgin channel 151

Re: Website Testing Files

2011-03-07 Thread ailo
I set up this on my own server. Feel free to check it out at (bad
bandwidth, just so you know):

http://mousike.dyndns.org/ubuntustudio/

My opinions so far:

I think the text Ubuntu Studio for creative humans is taking too much
vertical space.
(It feels strange that this text is not integrated with the
banner-thing, but that may change if the proportions are changed, perhaps.)

The buttons on the banner, though cool, are not instantly caught by the
eye. Perhaps giving them a little color would fix that.

Adding a new color somewhere might make the whole page a bit more vivid.

On one of my monitors i get maximum 1024x768 resolution. Using firefox,
not all of the banner fits in my window, while there's quite a lot of
room left on the width.
I think the width should be expanded while the main stuff should be
shrunk vertically.

Otherwise, nice work!

FWIW, 'dch -r debcommit -r' is a bit of black magic that doesn't seem

Maybe it would be more discoverable as 'bzr release' instead of 'bzr

Maybe 'bzr debrelease', to avoid polluting the namespace too much?

This should be implemented on top of 'dch' and support the -D option to
specify an upload target; we definitely shouldn't have bzr-builddeb encoding
its own notion of the default upload target, it's bad enough to have *one*
package that doesn't get updated for this as part of the release. :)

=== Actions from previous meeting ===

No action was required from the previous meeting.

=== Natty Development ===

Last week alpha3 was released. Blueprints work items should be marked
as postponed if they were completed. Everyone should have been doing
ISO testing last week as well.

[ACTION] Everybody should be doing ISO testing.

=== Ubuntu Server Team Events ===

No new events, but UDS is coming up pretty quickly.

=== Weekly Updates and Questions from the QA Team (hggdh) ===

Hggdh mentioned that he would need help in Alpha 3 testing and some
baremetal installs would help.

=== Weekly Updates and Questions fromt the kernel team (smb) ===

Smb mentioned there was some EC2 testing fallout, some xfs
regresssions, and nome nasty Lucid behavior in net name space (Bug
#720095, Bug #725089, Bug #692848)

=== Weekly Updates from the Server Community team (kim0) ===

Ubuntu cloud days is coming soon
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuCloudDays) which is basically similar to
UDW but focus on the cloud.

=== Open Discussion ===

I mentioned that we want to add lxc containers support to the UEC

Fwd: scripts with and without free fonts

2011-03-07 Thread David Planella
Hi translators,

There is a new question on the Ubuntu Translations forum, in case
someone might want to help there:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1700706

Is anyone familiar with a comprehensive list of different writing
systems which says which scripts have a complete freely-licensed font
and which scripts don't have such a font?

Regards,
David.

P.S. I perhaps should promote it more, but we've had a Translations
forum for a while now (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=391).
You can subscribe to it
(http://ubuntuforums.org/subscription.php?do=addsubscriptionf=391) or
add new questions. There is also the

If I type the thing about jack, it comes out like this:

Hello. I hope I'm doing it properly...

I just got this US122 (used) and I can't get it working. Googling
around and trying for days, I haven't been able to solve the issue.

Let's start from the beginning: I have got Lucid, and I used an
italian guide to set the kernel rt and the programs. Then I proceded,
using a guide on the web, to set up the card. It wasn't hard to
succeed in make it blink (the usb light), and make the system
recognize it (in the audio preferences I actually can see it, although
it sometimes has input/output and sometimes only input...)

The problem: as soon as I select it as output, I hear no sound. Say,
in the audio player, if I select the card as output and then I press
play, it doesn't play (not only is it silent, but it stands still).

As input, the sound recorder doesn't start, and I get no input level.

That's all... i tried a lot of things. I'm in contact with a Casey (

:) ) who says that he is working with it, and I'm waiting for his

response. I already tried to uninstall and reinstall alsa packages.
  Now I'm writing here...

p.s.: it works with another O.S., something ugly with some strange
  name like Windows (seven...).

 Hi Giuliano,

 Is this yours?

  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1700445

Supposing the TASCAM keeps on being scheda:2, take a look at

 alsamixer -c2

 and/or post the output of

 amixer -c2

I don't know if this card has an internal mixer that you can access from
alsamixer though, just trying to guess.

 Try:

 speaker-test -Dfront:USX2Y -c2

 You should hear pink noise.

Another thing, have you tried with jack? Try for example:

 jackd -dalsa -dhw:USX2Y -n3

(This is in a terminal, as a test. There is a gui frontend called
qjackctl or Jack Control. This command means, more or less: Use the alsa
driver on the card hw:USX2Y in realtime mode, with 3 periods per buffer,
48000 kHz, 1024 frames per period).

If jackd starts, install aqualung (a jack-aware audio player) and try
 playing a song.

Many of us use jack to capture / playback audio. Actually, Linux DAWs
depend on jack. Gnome sound preferences is a pulseaudio frontend. I
don't know if pulseaudio works with your card or not, but you should use
Jack if you want to record music.

Note that both pulseaudio and jack use the alsa driver.

 Cheers, Pablo

Hello Giuliano!

(I have written this mail some 3 hours ago before your last reply and saved it
for further editing. Nevertheless I send it now in case there is something
that can help you. :) )

Eventhough I have only very little experience with ubuntu studio applications
(just last week I set up my realtime kernel and system and it works perfectly
with a very cheap usb audio interface of 12€!), I want to share it with you.

You should work with Jack! Install it (as Pablo said, it's gui is called
qjackctl), and make a good setup for your system. (I used this for
reference:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToJACKConfiguration
and maybe this for the whole system set up:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudioPreparation)

In the case that there is no problem with your audio card drivers (I can't
help you here!) and Jack is configured properly, then you should hear sound
form your card. In other words and since as you said you card is recognized
from your system, if the sound isn't working, then you haven't configured Jack
properly. In the setup menu of qjackctl , at the Settings tab you should try
all possible settings, especially play with the driver, interface, input
device and output device, in order to make the right configuration of your
system.

Normally, you will see your audio interface's name at the interface and
input and output device options. Play with these, save your settings and hit
start at the main window of Qjackctl to start the engine.

Alright, I suppose mine is one of the cheapest one's! :)

This is it and it worked out of the box in a minute!

As far as the sound quality is concerned, I do not have the appropriate
knowledge and experience with other cards to tell. Anyway, it probably is a
low quality device in relation to its cost.

I am using it since last week and I have to say that in terms of it's easiness
and cost, it is a value-for-money device for quick recording of my guitar!

A música fica pulando e o cd trava. Nem o Mplayer, nem
 o VLC
e nem o Rhythmbox tocam as músicas do cd. O formato é WAV. Mas quando eu
 ripo o
cd para o pc aí toca perfeitamente. Se alguém puder me ajudar. Ah, DVDs com
filmes e outros tipos de cd rodam perfeitamente.

 grande abraço

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] LVM - Quais os Prós e Contras ?

2011-03-07 Thread Welington Rodrigues Braga

pacote system-config-lvm.

profissional.

Se quiser experimentar:

sudo apt-get install blender

momento.

ubuntu só me permite ligar no número *99#. Qual é a diferença destes dois
números? O primeiro é exclusivo para redes 3g (UMTS) o segundo usa tanto UMTS
quanto EDGE.

rodrigo

? specific to Compaq CL1850R; Debian 6 installs, but Ubuntu 10.10 11.02 alpha 2 hang early

2011-03-07 Thread Larry Vaden
Hello Ubuntu-Installer folks,

This question is specific to the Compaq CL1850R with cpqarray (Smart2-DH).

Debian 6 i386 business card installs.

Ubuntu 10.10 i386 server and 11.04 Alpha 2 i386 server do not.

Is this likely an installer difference or could the matter likely be
resolved by including parms at boot time?

If so, what parms?

If you need additional information, please ask.

We have a number of these clusters and RH is dropping support for the
cpqarray effective RHEL6, so we're interested in Debian/Ubuntu but
would prefer Ubuntu over Debian.

Kind regards/ldv

Now, if a user specifies -1 as a value for the -c option, the server

given a warning that he will have to kill the server manually.

I have attached the patch.

[Bug 724601] Re: UEC images should disable udev persistent net rules

2011-03-07 Thread Alex Bligh
No, these are different bugs I think, though they relate to the same
sort of issue.

Bug 726635 says that even on conventional (non-UEC) images, MAC
addresses ranges used by Virtualbox should be ignored in the persistent
udev rules. That's fair enough, though I note Xen and KVM were treated
differently last time I looked (Xen is triggered by subsystem, which
fails to match HVM emulated net devices but matches PV on HVM devices).

This bug says that on a UEC image, then by definition ANY udev
persistent net rules handling is unnecessary and can only cause
problems. The net interfaces are ALWAYS virtual, and may do things which
are unexpected and undesirable in certain environments. An example is
where the image comes up with a different MAC address when booted on a
different compute node/cluster that provides a different MAC range; this
is just about guaranteed to happen if you move an image with a
persistent boot disk between one cloud and another. Another example of
it causing problems is running on older Xen (see above). So on the UEC
image persistent interface naming should always be disabled,
irrespective of MAC address whitelist and subsystem checking (which is
not reliable). I believe Scott Moser at Canonical has had problems too
(I'm not sure precisely what); he encouraged me to report this so he may
be able to add detail.

A less drastic alternative to completely disabling it would be to look
at something in /etc/defaults which could then be used by people running
non-UEC images on virtual systems too. I'm not sufficiently familiar
with udev language to know how that could be incorporated into
lib/udev/rules.d/75-persistent-net-generator.rules

[Bug 724601] Re: UEC images should disable udev persistent net rules

2011-03-07 Thread Alex Bligh
From the manpage of udev: Rule files are required to have a unique
name, duplicate file names are ignored. Files in /etc/udev/rules.d/ have
precedence over files with the same name in /lib/udev/rules.d/. This can
be used to ignore a default rules file if needed..

Untested, but perhaps on UEC images, creating an /etc/udev/rules.d/75
-persistent-net-generator.rules (NOT 70-persistent-net.rules) which
essentially empty would do the trick.

[Bug 724601] Re: UEC images should disable udev persistent net rules

2011-03-07 Thread Alex Bligh
Further example of why this is needed: see my comment on Bug 726635.
VirtualBox appears to use a borrowed MAC range, rather than an
officiant assignment. That means it's probably not a great idea to use
that MAC address range as a basis for black/whitelisting.

[Bug 730620] [NEW] After disabling ipv6 port forwarding does not work anymore

2011-03-07 Thread inode77
Public bug reported:

After having disabled ipv6 (sysctl) local port forwarding does not work
anymore.

debug1: Local connections to LOCALHOST:8080 forwarded to remote address
127.0.0.1:80
debug1: Local forwarding listening on 127.0.0.1 port 8080.
debug1: channel 0: new [port listener]
debug1: Local forwarding listening on ::1 port 8080.

This is not a behaviour I expected and it went away when I reenabled ipv6.

Re: [Bug 730336] Re: [NOT A BUG] Include a dependency in SAMBA package

Hello Jelmer Vernooij,

So... How can I solve the red herring problem? I don't know if this
problem was exactly caused by the lack of installation of the package
libpam-smbpass, but what I know is that after I installed the package
libpam-smbpass this issue was solved

Thanks for your help,
