I don't use Ubuntu all the time at the moment, but I just specifically
re-tested the two scenarios I mentioned above on a fully patched 11.04
system, and neither causes the crash now.

For me, this occurs when using the guest session and logging out or
switching back to the original user session. It doesn't obviously cause
any other problems apart from the error report - and the loss of the
power status icon.

[Bug 387841] [NEW] Local sources/sinks not enumerated

2009-06-16 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
Public bug reported:

If you go to Configure Local Sound Server, and set Enable network
access to local sound devices and Make discoverable network sound
devices available locally then when you go to the Default Source or
Default Sink menus you get a nice list of local devices, e.g. :-

joh...@liberator: Nvidia CK804 - Nvidia CK804
joh...@liberator: Audigy 4 [SB0610] - ADC Capture/Standard PCM

Normally, you just get Default and Other. If you choose Other,
you get a plain text box. God knows what you need to put in there! If
the system is capable of discovering devices on a remote machine, and on
the local machine via a network loopback, why can a list of devices not
be provided instead of a plain text box? You shouldn't need to use this
network loopback trick just to change a default sound sink.

[Bug 328993] [NEW] synergys aborts on client connection

2009-02-13 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synergy

Client is running Arch Linux, but is also using synergyc 1.3.1.

I set up the Ubuntu machine as a server and start the client and the
synergys immediately exits. A backtrace was not much help because I
have no symbols but hopefully the assert message will give a clue as to
what the problem might be?

[Bug 254468] Re: momentary video garbage upon drawing new objects

2009-01-04 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
@Michael Chang: I've always had and still have this problem on a machine
with an nVidia 7900GTO (currently on 8.04) in Compiz and xcompmgr. My
Intel-based laptop didn't have this problem in Compiz in 8.04, but it
has appeared after my 8.10 upgrade. (I also tried out Arch Linux + KDE4
on that same laptop which has a similarly new Xorg server to 8.10 and
saw the same problem).

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/290849

I'm not sure if the two bugs are related - maybe there are multiple
causes of this issue. I've picked up some other display problems in
8.10 on Intel so maybe there are different things going on. But this
issue seems to span across distros and different graphics hardware and
come and go with time which makes it hard to pin down.

2008-12-23 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
Sorry, no luck with the 9.04 Alpha CD. I can't get a login. I get some
interesting screen junk and then I'm back to the greeter. I tried a bit
of fiddling but I couldn't find a quick resolution. It appears to be X
server related. It's probably OT for this discussion, for now.

I installed Arch with KDE 4.1 on this Intel-based machine too, and saw
the same effect in KDE. This makes me think the problem is most likely
in the xserver or the intel driver.

[Bug 285098] Re: intel 965 + compiz + suspend - corrupt alt-tab icons

2008-11-28 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
Came here via 282234. I have Intel hardware and suffer the Alt-Tab
switcher problem, with both the icons and the previews becoming
corrupted. I've had the screensaver cause X server crashes and at one
point a total lockup/kernel panic. Switching to a non-GL screensaver
seems to help, although I've gone for blank screen for now!

[Bug 290673] Re: fusesmb mount disappears - libsmbclient segfaults

2008-11-04 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
More info - using banshee etc. is not 100% stable. It will go for long
periods without a problem, then I will get it so it only lasts a minute
or two each time. Not sure what the trigger is. Sometimes fusesmb is
eating 100% CPU and has to be kill -9'd as nothing else will make it go
away. All client apps (e.g. music players) are hung until fusesmb is
killed.

[Bug 290673] Re: fusesmb mount disappears - libsmbclient segfaults

2008-11-02 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
To add some more information, it doesn't always write something the logs
when it fails. Sometimes the only way you know is because the
directories suddenly appear empty and you start to get Transport
endpoint not connected errors.

Secondly, the problem seems to occur always when you use Nautilus to
view the fuse mounted files directories. I find I can run bansee on
fusesmb mounted music for long periods of time with no problem, but if I
fire up fusesmb and then nautilus, I can make it fail instantly.

[Bug 290673] [NEW] fusesmb mount disappears - libsmbclient segfaults

2008-10-29 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libsmbclient

In latest 8.10, I find that when using a filesystem mounted with
fusesmb, the filesystem will suddenly disappear. This is very
repeatable and does seem to be load related although more experimenting
will be needed to find the exact cause.

Each time it happens, I get a line in my log:

Oct 29 10:02:57 gort kernel: [69797.713426] fusesmb[16090]: segfault at 4 ip
b7c03590 sp b5514dc0 error 4 in libsmbclient.so.0[b7b88000+386000]

b7cc9590 sp b55dadc0 error 4 in libsmbclient.so.0[b7c4e000+386000]

I've tried to get a backtrace with gdb, having installed fusesmb-dbgsym
and libsmbclient-dbgsym but I can't seem to get it to attach properly.
I'm a total noob with gdb, but I've tried set follow-fork-mode child
and set debug lin-lwp 1 but nothing seems to do the trick. I've asked
around but to no avail, so if any deb could tell me how to supply a
backtrace (or any other info you need) I'll be glad to oblige.

By the way, should apport pick this crash up, or not?

Note that I always found fusesmb very stable when used in exactly the
same way on 8.04.

[Bug 290849] [NEW] Compiz performance degraded in 8.10 on Intel 915GM/GMS/910GML

2008-10-29 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
Public bug reported:

On my desktop with nvidia hardware, running xcompmgr with openbox I
always noticed that when windows first appear (especially complex ones
like Firefox/Thunderbird) you get a moment of either garbage or some old
framebuffer after the wm brings the window up and before the app fills
it. I'd always noticed by contrast that my much less powerful Intel-
based laptop running 8.04 with Compiz was as smooth as butter. I saw
this effect very occasionally, but generally performance was good.

Having upgraded to the latest 8.10 on that laptop, I really notice that
when opening Firefox or Thunderbird I get that same effect almost every
time in quite a pronounced way.

I tried to capture with xvidcap without success, but managed to grab
photos of the effect, which are attached.

2008-10-26 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
I have the same in intrepid. It generally worked OK in 8.04 (although I
did see this bug once or twice in 8.04 but it was a very rare thing). I
8.10 it is grey after every reboot, although it is still working as the
menus respond and so on. Removing and re-adding it to the panel fixes
the problem - until the next boot.

[Bug 280115] [NEW] Proper info files for tar should be included

2008-10-08 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tar

Debian does not include the proper info documentation for tar because of
licensing issues.

Quoting from tar(1):

The GNU folks, in general, abhor man pages, and create info documents
instead. Unfortunately, the info document describing tar is licensed
under the GFDL with invariant cover texts, which violates the Debian
Free Software Guidelines. As a result, the info documentation for tar
is not included in the Debian package.

If you want to read the complete documentation for GNU tar, please
refer to the online version at

 http://www.gnu.org/software/tar/manual/index.html

This man page was created for the Debian distribution. It does not
describe all of the functionality of tar, and it is often out of date.

My understanding is that Ubuntu has a less restrictive licensing policy
(e.g. the inclusion of Firefox, restricted drivers..). Could this minor
annoyance be relieved by including to proper info docs from GNU in
Ubuntu?

[Bug 220750] [NEW] xdg-open breaks on spaces in paths when using generic open method

2008-04-22 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xdg-utils

xdg-utils 1.0.1-2 on Ubuntu Gutsy

xdg-open tries to detect the desktop environment and falls back to a
generic method using run-mailcap. There is a bug in this function that
means if the path contains a space, the method fails.

e.g.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xdg-open Fire\ stockists.txt
local: 438: stockists.txt: bad variable name
Warning: unknown mime-type for Fire -- using application/*
Error: no such file Fire

There are some missing quotes in the code. I have submitted a patch

[Bug 220769] [NEW] xdg-open generic mechanism should allow quoted file urls

2008-04-22 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xdg-utils

xdg-utils 1.0.1-2 on Ubuntu Gutsy

the open_generic() function should support file URL's with encoded
characters, e.g. file://home/user/foo%20bar

gnome-open supports this format so it would make sense to try and match
it since the above is a valid URL. If not, the docs should be updated
to specifically say that this may not be supported by xdg-open,
depending on the environment.

[Bug 220765] [NEW] xdg-open should use xdg-mime instead of run-mailcap when no DE detected

2008-04-22 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xdg-utils

xdg-utils 1.0.1-2 on Ubuntu Gutsy

When no desktop environment is detected, xdg-open falls back to a
generic mechanism based on run-mailcap. This is rather limited as it
depends on file extensions. It would seem better to use file or
probably xdg-mime to choose how to open the file.

The mime type could be fetched with:

file --mime $1

and extracted from the output and prepended to the filename before
passing to run-mailcap.

However, it looks to me like a better option would be to use xdg-mime,
since xdg-mime query default $1 will give you the default application
to open the file.

[Bug 220774] [NEW] xdg-open should allow user to force desktop environment detection

2008-04-22 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xdg-utils

The xdg-open code attempts to detect a desktop environment (GNOME, KDE,
XFCE4, other) and choose a way of opening files accordingly.

Users of Fluxbox, Openbox and other WM's may have gnome-open or the
corresponding KDE or XFCE components installed and may wish xdg-open to
use them.

detectDE() could have code added to check for a variable - say
XDG_OPEN_FORCE_DE - and use that value (kde, gnome, xfce, generic)
instead of attemtpting a detection if it is present.

[Bug 150277] Re: curlftpfs-0.9.1 + libcurl/7.16.4 segfaults on removing files

Just been bitten by the same bug, and it does indeed render curlftpfs
unusable for me. I agree, a fix needs to be released for Gutsy since
it's still the supported release.

[Bug 24776] Re: ipw2100 - Fatal interrupt. Scheduling firmware restart.

2008-03-12 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
I mailed the driver contact at Intel with a link to this page and to
their bugzilla link I gave above, just saying that a lot of people had
problems and were keen to contribute to a fix if we could.

I got a mail back saying:-

A community member recently backported a fix for RX overrruns in the ipw2200
driver. I assume the same problem may exist in the ipw2100
driver. If you are interested you can try to backport the fix to the ipw2100
driver ... details are here:
http://marc.info/?l=linux-wirelessm=120302948521611w=2

This is beyond my skills but might be useful to someone?

2008-01-06 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
This seems to be reported:

I have the same problem on Gutsy with a Sony Vaio using WPA. Have not
tried WEP or plain yet for comparison. Card seems to fail when
large(ish) amounts of data are transferred and only a reboot will cure
it.

[Bug 177443] photoprint should recommend or require icc-profiles package

2007-12-19 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
Public bug reported:

As the title says, the application sets up paths and has a dialog to
select colour profiles, but by default show errors on each entry because
it cannot find the colour profile files. Installing the icc-profiles
package corrects this. While the application does appear to function
without this package, part of its functionality is evidently disabled or
restricted, and it does show potentially confusing warning/error
messages to the user.

[Bug 174012] digikam crashes when using light table

2007-12-04 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: digikam

This seems fairly reproducible using digikam 0.9.2 on Ubuntu 7.10
(running under GNOME). I just add about three images to the light
table, and the first thing I notice is that the wrong images appear in
the panels when an image is selected in the top row. If you click
around, selecting images and moving between panels, digikam will
eventually crash.

[Bug 131382] [apport] gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in strcmp()

[Bug 116787] Re: [apport] gs-esp crashed with SIGSEGV in gdev_x_map_rgb_color()

2007-06-22 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
Having logged out and logged back in, I re-intalled the .debs for gs-
gpl. I can't remove gs-esp without causing a real headache in the
package manager. I then fired up kghostview and in the options changed
the setting for the interpreter from gs to gs-gpl. kghostview
renders the file as normal, and when I switch to Greyscale in the
settings, I get a crash from gs-gpl.

I hope this was the right thing to do, but since this is now a different
package, I've submitted the apport bug report as #116787.
