I'll admit it myself, I once messed up like this. However I quickly
sent out an apology mail to all the mailing lists, and promised never
to repeat such behaviour. Mir, I expect you to learn your lesson.

Here are a couple of points I'll try to devote time to by this weekend:

1. I'll be upgrading Mediawiki, and enabling captcha.

2. I'll install Drupal on mekong (the server on which ubuntu-in.org is
hosted). Vivek and Pratul will have full admin rights to this
installation. We'll see how the combined Drupal and MediaWiki layout
works out. If it clicks, that's great. If it doesn't, we'll go back to
the MediaWiki site.

Please keep in mind that this possibly involves a PHP version upgrade,
and since mekong is a shared server, we'll have to have a chat with
the sysadmins of the other LoCo Teams hosted on mekong to resolve
this. So I cannot guarantee that this work will be completed by this
weekend.

Soumyadip, I think healthy flaming(which definitely does not include
personal/racial remarks, lewd language etc) should not be discouraged.
It's always a part of some heated discussions involving personal
preferences. Apart from being fun, these sometimes bring up some
 interesting points

Hey chill !!! :) The idea of the ListAdmin warning is to remind
people to watch what they speak/write. Just a friendly reminder. And
uhh incidentally, heated discussions are just that, discussions.
Flamewars is something that happens when people start using some of
the tricks of the trade that you mention between parenthesis

There is nothing wrong with your configuration. The problem is that since
RAM is low (256 MB isn't much to run a liveCD, especially if you don't
already have an existing swap partition) there is a lot of swapping going on
in the RAM. If you can, please download the alternate install iso from here
: http://releases.ubuntu.com/feisty/ubuntu-7.04-alternate-i386.iso It will
not have the graphical installer, but will be faster for you.

Umm... any reason why Mark Shuttleworth wouldn't be running some
derivative of Ubuntu on his desktop ??

Here is a tip. There is no point posting news articles (etc.) on the
list. Startup a new section called news on the wiki and start posting
there. Ask the admins to try some way of displaying the 5 most recent
news articles on the main page.

 Hi all,
  I was looking at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archivemirrors
was sad to see that the IITM mirror is one week behind. Does anybody
the reason for the mirror being behind so much?
  Cheers!

That is an archive mirror, so one would assume it archives the
repository. :) Besides, anyone who mirrors repositories would know
there is nearly 20GB of data per architecture that has to be synced.
It takes time.

Does anyone know who is administering the mirror ? Maybe someone could
drop a mail to the person concerned about the launchpad stat.

 Hi all,
I would say it would be cool if you guys go with moinmoin some
of the things going with it are :-

 1. GPL software
 2. Graphical toolbar for editing
 3. Ability to render as docbook as when one needs them.
 4. Ability to remove pages spam with one click
 5. Robust roadmap ahead
http://moinmoin.wikiwikiweb.de/MoinMoinTodo/Release_1.6.0
 6. Most importantly, Ubuntu uses it

 http://test.wikiwikiweb.de/
 http://moinmoin.wikiwikiweb.de/WikiSandBox

Not in any way connected with the project but seems pretty cool what
 they are upto.

When the initial website was setup, it was decided via a poll open to
all members of the Ubuntu India LoCo team, to base the site on
Mediawiki. I don't remember any issues that cropped up as a result of
using Mediawiki, so suggesting that we throw the current site away and
start afresh with MoinMoin is counter-productive IMHO

Overall we guys need to start off working. Its been just OK and we
need to pull ourselves and get going.

Nice response all of you, but my original query hasn't still been
addressed. Actions are great, but we need content submissions. Of
course, writing up local Ubuntu specifc events is a good start. +1 to
all of you who did help. But the bottomline remains that there is not
enough work going on with the website.

Let's start at the basics. Who is the resident Istanbul expert around
here ? I want a number of screencasts on the absolute basics of using
Ubuntu. Configuring network/Internet connections, installing programs,
installing security updates. I need one other person to come forward
and write down a running commentary sort-of-thing with pictures for
people who cannot view screencasts. There needs to be a new section on
the website : Getting started where we'll be hosting these
screencasts and write-ups.

Re: elections, Gaurav, if you think someone in the ubuntu-in community
deserves to be given more responsibility and elected as Council
Member, why don't you propose that person for election. Then I believe
we can all decide on a convenient time to have a vote on IRC.

W.R.T. registering ubuntu-in as a registered body in India, there are
a lot of legal issues involved. IMHO one of the major things that need
to be cleared up is how does Canonical, as the prime sponsor for the
website and mailing list, feel about the process. Then there are other
logistical issues, including where to have offices, how to arrange for
General Meetings (which is a must IIRC, for registered societies).
Linux-India, the largest FLOSS organisation in India has decided not
to operate as a registered society. We need to discuss the pros and
cons of a registered society, especially for a pan-India organisation
like ubuntu-in.

Yes. How-to get Beryl Installed with screencasts will be fun :-)

Screencasts will be good and istanbul is the best tool for it. I would
suggest Theora/Ogg format using strictly (istanbul uses same). Topics
can be decided on wiki and anyone interested can take the
responsibility. But the main question is 'where to upload?'

How big are the files actually ? I'm assuming you record at 256x192
resolution at maybe 1 frame per second (fast enough IMHO). I don't
think they'll be too big to be hosted on the website itself.
http://www.ubuntu-in.org/wiki/Special:Upload let's you upload files
easily enough :)

I'd recommend the Fedora Screencasting Howto for guidance.

So how it is? Search in your regions, it will show a large list of
people there, but finding their profile, you will come with that the
profile is not well informative, and the date of profile creation and
last editing is same today for most of members. Also, they use same
photo for many members. What the heck, dont know why they doing so. It
wont make the community real without real people. Maybe, they want to
earn some thru advertisements. Also, please dont access your Y! and
Google address book from Yaari, that will add those contacts for
immediate invitation email, adn so called spams.

But there is one thing. Once registred, you can send SMS to any friends
in India, and it works better.

[Bug 55191] Possible error in postrm script

2006-08-04 Thread Soumyadip Modak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: language-support-en

While removing language-support-en (I know it is highly unlikely someone
would do this, but still) I get the following when the postrm runs :

Removing language-support-en ...
dpkg: error processing language-support-en (--remove):
cannot remove file `/usr/share/doc/language-support-en/changelog.gz': Not a

This usually results in the package not being removed totally and has to
be manually cleaned up. apt-get -f install doesn't solve the problem.
