[Bug 2069244] [NEW] Help contents file not found

2024-06-12 Thread Tim Duncan
Public bug reported:

Just installed the games-minesweeper package via apt-get and game plays
fine. However, when I go to Help > Contents then Firefox opens with a
page:

File not found
Firefox can’t find the file at /usr/share/sgt-puzzles/help/en/index.html.

And when I go to Help > Help on Mines then Firefox opens with a page:

File not found
Firefox can’t find the file at /usr/share/sgt-puzzles/help/en/mines.html.

If I browse in Files to /usr/share/sgt-puzzles/help/en and double click
either index.html or mines.html the same error page comes up. However,
if in Firefox I go to File > Open File and open index.html or mines.html
the page opens fine. Permissions on all files in the folder are: RW-R--
R--

2024-06-05 Thread Tim Richardson
the rendering problem is identical when using virt-manager with the
virtio video driver with open gl 3D accel enabled. persists even in
latest kisak fresh mesa.

workaround is

export GSK_RENDERER=gl

in ~/.profile or where ever you set your environment variables.

[Bug 2068034] Re: Installing slurm-wlm from apt gives error "adduser: The UID 64030 is already in use"

2024-06-04 Thread Tim Andrews
I eventually found a workaround:
apt install libuser
luseradd -r --shell=/bin/false -M --uid=64030 slurm

Sorry for the trouble, but it would still be good if the behavior of the
slurm-wlm installer can be updated, so that people do not run into this
issue from now on.

Thank you

[Bug 2068034] Re: Installing slurm-wlm from apt gives error "adduser: The UID 64030 is already in use"

2024-06-04 Thread Tim Andrews
Apparently my error has been around since Xenial, per
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=851103.

UID 64030 cannot be deleted. It is in LDAP, and the account is still in
use.

Is there any chance this can be fixed? Or can someone provide a
workaround?

[Bug 2061118] Re: Rendering issues in virtual machines (GTK ngl backend)

2024-05-23 Thread Tim Richardson
This affects qemu/kvm too. On vanilla 22.04 host, gtk4 apps (e.g. Files)
from 24.04 do not render properly (with 3D/openGL enabled)

via virt-manager

mesa in the 24.04 guest is 24.0.5-1

Fedora 40 guest with all updates has the same problem (open files apps and view
files in list view, for example)
Both hosts I see this on use AMD graphics. Wayland in host and guest.

[Bug 2065288] [NEW] gnome 46 camera app requires systemctl --user restart pipewire

2024-05-09 Thread Tim Richardson
Public bug reported:

In ubuntu 24.40 the camera app will not see my laptop camera until I do
this:

systemctl --user restart pipewire

this is required in every log in.

The camera problem also affects other usage, such as using the laptop camera in
google meet via firefox.
It is probably a pipewire problem.

I don't know where to report it.

[Bug 2060897] Re: Xubuntu installation failed: RuntimeError: aborting install since no mirror is usable

2024-04-16 Thread Tim Andersson
I *think* I managed to recreate this appropriately.

I did an install with the noble amd64 iso dated 15th April 2024, within
a VM and disabled my wifi from the host machine.

The VM was then "connected" to a network, but with no actual internet
access - I hope this is enough to mimic a "deadnet" network.

Anyway, my conclusion is that the install wasn't successful, please see
the log attached.

Perhaps this change hasn't made it into the image of the 15th :)

[Bug 2061816] [NEW] apache2 2.4.41-4ubuntu3.17 defaults to transfer-encoding=chunked where this is undesired

2024-04-16 Thread Tim Andersson
Public bug reported:

We (autopkgtest.ubuntu.com) had an unattended upgrade recently bump our
apache version to 2.4.41-4ubuntu3.17.

This was problematic for us - we serve static files through apache and
seemingly after this version bump, our transfer encodings are now ALWAYS
set to be "chunked".

This is an issue, as we have external services which periodically
download these static files I've mentioned, which need to check the
Content-Length header whilst downloading these files.

I've manually installed 2.4.41-4ubuntu3.16 on our staging servers and
verified that this patch is indeed the root cause of the issue.

with 2.4.41-4ubuntu3.16:
```
 wget -v -d https://autopkgtest.staging.ubuntu.com/static/autopkgtest.db
...
---request begin---
GET /static/autopkgtest.db HTTP/1.1
Host: autopkgtest.staging.ubuntu.com
[expiry none] SRVNAME S0
Registered socket 3 for persistent reuse.
Length: 1434976256 (1.3G) [application/octet-stream]
Saving to: ‘autopkgtest.db’
```

with 2.4.41-4ubuntu3.17:
```
---request begin---
GET /static/autopkgtest.db HTTP/1.1
Host: autopkgtest.staging.ubuntu.com
User-Agent: Wget/1.21.3
Accept: */*
Accept-Encoding: identity
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
date: Tue, 16 Apr 2024 10:23:50 GMT
last-modified: Tue, 16 Apr 2024 10:23:27 GMT
[expiry none] SRVNAME S0
Registered socket 3 for persistent reuse.
Length: unspecified [application/octet-stream]
Saving to: ‘autopkgtest.db’
```

And you can clearly see the content length isn't reported.

Is this the intended behaviour? Are there ways I can workaround this to
not use chunked transfer encoding?

[Bug 1471380] Re: [Fujitsu Lifebook AH532] Installing Ubuntu on a USB-drive locks out firmware access

2024-04-14 Thread Tim Schumacher
The workaround has now landed in all currently supported linux-stable
branches:

linux-6.8:  6.8-rc7  (f45812cc23fb74bef62d4eb8a69fe7218f4b9f2a)
linux-6.7:  6.7.9(cbf12e716a52d260fabecdca7d5f6e7cd07aed6c)
linux-6.6:  6.6.21   (71da10e633a96593cf59af3f322a9c49a22cb71e)
linux-6.1:  6.1.81   (249d6ca4ff0022a4b51a8eb9fac6d7bff2c94d1b)
linux-5.15: 5.15.154 (9bc9c11c151ab27214cc204d954ee902e9bbe8e2)
linux-5.10: 5.10.215 (f33255ccbb0f627da76364cce72cf980d027142c)
linux-5.4:  5.4.274  (34b5d2ff9ed5cdea9f971f394c0d623761a4d357)
linux-4.19: 4.19.312 (a7bd7dbaa2ddcf8c5ed5d96df240f1442447d252)

I tested the recent Ubuntu 24.04 beta and made sure the issue is already
fixed there.

Sadly, we just about missed the time (by about two months) to get the
fix into the ISOs for Ubuntu 22.04.4.

[Bug 2060266] Re: gnome-session.service [unity-session] uses deprecated --builtin parameter

2024-04-09 Thread Tim Andersson
I've also encountered this on the latest ubuntu-unity iso:
54d180e57790c951ca736606ac9951e3ddf4c1773432ac4ed23f5c4da40acfac
*noble-desktop-amd64.iso

when trying to do a fresh install in a VM, prior to opening the
installer, I'm greeted with the attached screen.

After clicking login, I get a black, blank screen momentarily, then I'm
booted back to the attached screen.

I've discovered this as well. For me, copydown works perfectly fine for

follows:

--env=ADT_TEST_TRIGGERS=nvidia-cuda-toolkit/12.0.1-4build4 -- qemu

with failures as follows:

[Bug 2060354] Re: Segfaults and assertion failures in Xorg's render/glyph.c

2024-04-08 Thread Tim Richardson
Yeah, for me it crashed 100% of the time with no changes, and removing a
configuration file (which among other things removed my non-default
preference for grayscale antialias) completely stopped the crashing.
This is in a kvm/qemu VM. So from my perspective, and from a few others
users, it looks like the cause and a good workaround. But other people
in the set of JetBrains tickets report intermittent, unpredictable
crashing that doesn't benefit from such a settings change. I think think
upstream is talking about race conditions.

So far in the bug report (the Ubuntu one) I don't understand what the proposed
course of action is.

I think this is the upstream bug report:

for what it's worth, JetBrains bug reports find that the problem is

[Bug 2060186] [NEW] Live USB session has non-functional menu item "Redshift"

2024-04-04 Thread Tim Starling
Public bug reported:

I downloaded the Kubuntu Noble daily ISO test image version 20240328.1
from iso.qa.ubuntu.com and booted it on my laptop. I noticed that
clicking "Utilities > Redshift" in the application menu had no obvious
effect.

When I (later) ran it from the terminal, it produced the following
output (location redacted):

$ redshift-qt
"Using provider `geoclue2'."
"Solar elevations: day above 3.0, night below -6.0"
"Temperatures: 6500K at day, 4500K at night"
"Brightness: 1.00:1.00"
"Gamma (Daytime): 1.000, 1.000, 1.000"
"Gamma (Night): 1.000, 1.000, 1.000"
"Using method `randr'."
"Location: **.** S, ***.** E"
"Color temperature: 6500K"
"Brightness: 1.00"
"Status: Enabled"
"Period: Night"
"Color temperature: 4500K"
"Location: **.** S, ***.** E"

It adjusted the screen color and continued to run, it didn't exit. I
eventually noticed that it does make a notification icon. It's a daemon
with a spurious or incorrect .desktop file.

The functionality appears to duplicate and conflict with the "night
color" feature in plasma-workspace.

If I understand it correctly, the main problem is that kubuntu-desktop
recommends redshift-qt, so it gets installed in the ISO. This package
should not be installed.

[Bug 2055776] Re: After updating ubuntu, the network to which the subnet address is assigned does not become active in KVM.

2024-03-21 Thread Tim Chevalier
I found this bug report after experiencing the same problem. The error
message I got was exactly the same as the one in comment #2. The fix
suggested by Kazuhiro in comment #9 fixed the problem.

I think that since this bug affects more than one person, it's not
merely a problem with one person's local environment. I didn't have
occasion to use KVM between 2024-02-27 and today, but it was working for
me before then and I didn't manually change anything in my environment.
I don't know enough about Ubuntu networking to say whether it's a bug in
dnsmasq or another component, but surely a package upgrade shouldn't
break something like this.

[Bug 1471380] Re: [Fujitsu Lifebook AH532] Installing Ubuntu on a USB-drive locks out firmware access

2024-03-04 Thread Tim Schumacher
A workaround [1] (adapted from the respective mailing list submission
[2] with minor edits) has been submitted to mainline Linux and was just
released as part of Linux v6.8-rc7. Automatic backports into Linux 6.1,
6.6, and 6.7 are pending.

I'll submit separate linux-stable backports for 5.15, 5.10, 5.4, and
4.19 (required due to changed paths) once we get the first stable
release on 6.8, that should be ample time for figuring out whether the
approach introduces any issues.

autopkgtest.ubuntu.com - all-proposed in retries, running page and results pages

2024-02-07 Thread Tim Andersson
Hi all!

We recently made some quality of life changes to autopkgtest.ubuntu.com,
and thought we'd share them with you all.

Up until now, when requesting a test with "all-proposed=1" via the webpage,
you could never see on the results or running pages whether a test was
requested with or without "all-proposed=1" (for those wondering what this
means in practice, it just means that when installing packages on the
testbed, *all* of them are installed from the proposed pocket, rather than
just the specified triggers).

This is now amended (fixing [1]). We added a new column to the results
page, titled "env", in which you can see "all-proposed=1" if the test was
requested with this additional param (nothing will be displayed if it
wasn't).

You will also now start seeing "all-proposed: 1" on the /running page for
tests that were requested with this additional param.

Additionally to this, when retrying a test by clicking the retry button on
the results page, "all-proposed=1" is now preserved when retrying.

For those wondering why we titled the column "env" and not "all-proposed",
we intend to use this "env" column for additional features in the future.

If you run into any issues regarding this feature or any others, please
contact us on IRC in the #ubuntu-quality channel.

Regards,
Tim

Re: Regarding How to disable on screen keyboard on ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2023-09-06 Thread Tim Andersson
Hi Koutilya,

Thanks very much for taking the time to report this bug!

Please could you re-create the issue on your system, press alt+f2 and then
enter `ubuntu-bug gnome-shell` after doing so. This'll take you through the
steps to file a bug on launchpad, and upload all the necessary logs
automatically. It'll then be much easier to get that bug in the right hands
for you and get a fix on the way.

For more information about the bug reporting process, you can read this
wiki page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/report-ubuntu-bug.html.en

There is also this wiki page which covers more or less the same topic but
in a much more verbose manner, you can consult it if anything is unclear
from the previous wiki page:

Re: Duplicate Requests in autopkgtest-cloud

2023-08-09 Thread Tim Andersson
Hey Utkarsh,

Thanks for reporting this! Yeah we've recently become aware of this. It
takes a few seconds for a request to hit the queue, so if you spam refresh
or re-queue you can queue multiple times. Not really sure how to amend this
just yet, but we'll look to amend it in the future.

Thanks,
Tim

Hi Steve,

This is something I missed in the initial implementation, but there's now
an MP for a fix ready to go into master. Right now, however, I've hotfixed
prod so that if you pass `all-proposed`, the duplicate request check is
disabled. I made this quick change to unblock ginggs

Duplicate Requests in autopkgtest-cloud

2023-07-27 Thread Tim Andersson
Hi all,

In the Ubuntu QA team we recently made and deployed a change which now
makes it impossible to queue duplicate requests.

If a request is currently in the queue, or is currently running, and you
request the same test, you will be taken to an error page which tells you
the test details and whether it is currently queued or currently running.
It looks like this:
```
You submitted an invalid request:
Test already queued:
release: lunar
pkg: gzip
arch: arm64
triggers: gzip/1.12-1ubuntu1
```
This is to try and ease the load on autopkgtest-cloud.

If you experience any bugs or unexpected functionality, please file a bug
against `autopkgtest-cloud` and let us know. We expect it to work
seamlessly but always expect the unexpected right :)

Thanks,
Ubuntu QA

Timestamps added to logs in autopkgtest and autopkgtest-cloud

2023-06-14 Thread Tim Andersson
Hey there,

Recently in Canonical Ubuntu QA we made some changes to autopkgtest which
went into both upstream and ubuntu-devel which preprends timestamps to the
logs.

The timestamps are in seconds and are measured since the beginning of all
the tests when you run autopkgtest against a package. We hope that this can
make it easier to extract valuable information from log files when reading
logs from the autopkgtest-cloud environment. It can help with determining
where tests are hanging, for instance.

A log snippet can be seen below:
```
It does not prepend the timestamp to stdout, just to the log file itself.
You will soon start seeing this in all logs in autopkgtest-cloud soon. Let
us know if you run into any issues. If you use autopkgtest from source
(both ubuntu-devel and from debian) and update your master branch, you will
also start to see this in your log files.
Hi Erik,
I spoke with members of Canonical who work closely with gaming on desktop,
and they said their preferred platform for community member communication
is https://discourse.ubuntu.com/
For anything related to desktop gaming, please use discourse. Any queries
Disable 'download-installer' using pre-seed
2022-10-14 Thread Tim Duncan
Hi Everybody,
My name is Tim and I work as a Senior Systems Engineer for Servers
Australia, a large server hosting provider.
We run a LOT of preseeded Ubuntu installations and have noticed that in
newer versions of Ubuntu, it's hanging for around 5 minutes before
proceeding with the installation. Before the hang, we can see console
output showing "menu item 'download-installer' selected".
I cannot find how to change this option, however.
I've gone through all the output of  'debconf-get-selections --installer'
however, there is nothing in here mentioning the 'download-installer' menu
item.
I also noticed that when installing ubuntu manually from an ISO, it does
pop up asking if we want to update the installer before proceeding. I'm
only assuming this is the same menu item, however, perhaps I'm missing
something as I can see the 'download-installer' component is part of the
netboot iso as per: https://d-i.debian.org/doc/internals/ch02.html
So my question is, what do we need to add to the preseed file to tell
Ubuntu to NOT update the installer, and just install the system with the
current version of the installer? Or is this not what's happening, and
perhaps the reason for our installation hanging is related to something
else?
Thanks!!
[Bug 1977753] [NEW] Azure 5.4: vDSO broken with 5.4.0-1075-azure
2022-06-06 Thread Tim Gardner
Public bug reported:
SRU Justification
[Impact]
vDSO works with the 5.4.0-1074-azure kernel, but is broken in 5.4.0-1075-azure
and newer due to this commit
https://git.launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux-azure/+git/bionic/commit/?h=Ubuntu-azure-5.4-5.4.0-1075.78_18.04.1=5c899e1bcda02c755a5327353ed66f0768771644
Please revert the commit 5c899e1bcda02c755a5327353ed66f0768771644.
How to verify vDSO is working: "strace date 2>&1 | grep time" should not show
the time related syscalls, e.g. clock_gettime()
With 5.4.0-1075-azure and newer, I see the time related syscalls.
More info:
The buggy commit 5c899e1bcda02c755a5327353ed66f0768771644 was backported from
the mainline commit:
e4ab4658f1cf ("clocksource/drivers/hyper-v: Handle vDSO differences inline")
but due to the differences between the mainline kernel and the 5.4.0-107x-azure
kernel, we actually should not simply remove hv_set_clocksource_vdso().
FWIW, the mainline commit is actually buggy and is fixed by this later
mainline path:
commit 3486d2c9be652a31033363bdd50391b0c8a8fe21
clocksource/drivers/hyper-v: Re-enable VDSO_CLOCKMODE_HVCLOCK on X86
Mohammed reports (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213029)
the commit e4ab4658f1cf ("clocksource/drivers/hyper-v: Handle vDSO
differences inline") broke vDSO on x86. The problem appears to be that
VDSO_CLOCKMODE_HVCLOCK is an enum value in 'enum vdso_clock_mode' and
'#ifdef VDSO_CLOCKMODE_HVCLOCK' branch evaluates to false (it is not
a define).
Use a dedicated HAVE_VDSO_CLOCKMODE_HVCLOCK define instead.
Fixes: e4ab4658f1cf ("clocksource/drivers/hyper-v: Handle vDSO differences
inline")
PS, Ubunt 20.04’s 5.13.0-1026-azure is not affected.
After some discussion it was decided that the revert is the best
solution.
[Test Case]
strace date 2>&1 | grep time
also Microsoft tested
[Where things could go wrong]
vDSO entry point could stop working altogether
[Bug 1976399] [NEW] focal/azure: The console log of ARM64 Ubuntu 18.04 has duplicate output
2022-05-31 Thread Tim Gardner
Public bug reported:
SRU Justification
[Impact]
There is duplicate output on the console . LSG team identify the root
cause and suggested to apply two patches below.
What we are hitting is exactly in the second commit's log. Ubuntu kernel
also needs the following diff:
Please include the March-2022 fix: “Drivers: hv: vmbus: Fix initialization of
device object in vmbus_device_register()”
(https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=3a5469582c241abca22500f36a9cb8e9331969cf)
BTW, this call-trace should be harmless to a non-CVM VM.
[Bug 1970090] Re: Backintime not launching because of python error
2022-05-24 Thread Tim Nolte
Thanks for providing this fix via the BIT PPA. I've had so many problems
with my system since the upgrade to Ubuntu 22.04, this was just one more
issue I had to spend time attempting to fix. Pretty disappointing that
Ubuntu, and thus derivatives, are now shipping with a bunch of broken
software and backup software is the worst thing to ship broken.
