Re: [ubuntu-in] regarding Java JRE versus openjdk

2014-08-02 Thread Ramnarayan.K
Hi Gora and friends

I was bugged by having to run windows and java just for one app and also
exposing my online work to the horrors on unsecured windows. So explored
the option of installing oracle / sun java - . At the same time was not
interested in purging anything from my system.

So luckily came across this literally few easy command tutorial to install
Oracle Java

http://tecadmin.net/install-oracle-java-8-jdk-8-ubuntu-via-ppa/

It did not remove the exiting openjdf installed and both seem to run side
by side, i can't see anything wrong.

Infact now the tax utility runs on the opnjdk as well :-)

Just thought that it would be good to give this information, specially to
those who have been cursing the ITD for lack of a linux solution.

regards
ram

Had the same problem, and yes the ITD software does seem to specifically
 require
Oracle Java (write once, despair of ever running anywhere). Unfortunately,
 Oracle
Java is no longer supported on Ubuntu, and the Oracle site (the link that

only has a RPM, or a tar.gz. You could try the tar.gz, but that might end
 up messing

 just gave up,

Hope all well otherwise.

Yes you are correct the ITD is very frustrating - and it seems like you and
like every year I would need to run windows inside a virtual machine as
well. Luckily the new virtual machines are quiet well integrated so it
makes life easier - I can do all my work on the linux side and simply just
feed in the data into the windows side - generate the file and its done.

Am experimenting with running windows from a USB drive - since even the
great samsung that makes android software does not have a linux based
firmware updation tool.

Meanwhile am not going to waste time with trying to make ITD stuff work -
just needed the confirmation you have provided.

If you are trying to file your return, there are various sites that provide
you with an easier experience. Some of these are free, and others charge a
small amount. You could check out http://taxspanner.com,

Just start up synaptic and check what is installed by typing the two
keywords (as you have mentioned) or try this

apt-cache policy package-name (no sudo needed).

Not installed:

:/$ apt-cache policy openjdk

if you are unsure of the name use double tab to autocomplete the name / or
check in synaptic

The WebUpd8 Java PPA downloads the tgz file from Oracle server and

Don't know, but my guess is that the ITD app is explicitly checking for
Oracle Java, as they do not want to test and support other JREs. Kind of
defeats the whole promise of Java, IMHO.
