[Bug 286290] Re: upgrade process hangs

2009-09-20 Thread Mike
Hi Jonathan,

Thank you for the useful response. I decided to give it a try.
Unfortunately, I cannot get it back into the state where it gives me an
error. Everything seems to be working just as it is working for you.

I'm not sure what I can do now. It is no longer an issue for me and is
irreproducible. Still, if there was a way to help without investing a
significant amount of time, I'll be glad to give it a try.

Thanks again for your help,
Mike

[Bug 433556] [NEW] ethernet network connection not automatically connecting

2009-09-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The dhcp client in Karmic Alpha is not connecting automatically. This
includes both when the machine starts up before the network switch as
well as after hot plugging the ethernet cable.

The expected behavior is like in kde3.5, when the line becomes active
again, the network profile settings are tried again automatically.

What is happening is that the network stays inactive until dhclient is
run manually.

There are two ways to get that. One is to move the ethernet cable to
another subnet (on another switch). Another way is when the switch or
adsl modem is turned on after the machine with karmic has already
started to boot.

[Bug 286290] Re: upgrade process hangs

2009-09-20 Thread Jonathan Marsden
Mike,

I suspect the problem was caused by an odd/corrupt/invalid set of
answers to the configuration questions for postfix, which are normally
stored in /var/cache/debconf/config.dat .

If you happen to have a backup of that file from the time when the issue
occurred, we could look at that file for clues. You could even restore
your entire system to that state and reproduce the issue that way,
though I realize that might well be more work than you are able to spend
on this!

Otherwise, since this is no longer an issue for you, and neither of us
can reproduce it, I would like (with your consent) to just set this bug
to Invalid.

2009-09-20 Thread Jonathan Marsden
Dekar: Did you actually test this at all? Please provide some evidence
to support your claims.

You have said that you believe this issue is:

A real problem, exploitable for many people in a default
installation. Includes serious remote denial of services,
local root privilege escalations, or data loss.

The default installation, when one installs apache2 using

  sudo apt-get install apache2

uses the apache2-mpm-prefork module, not apache2-mpm-worker. The
article by LiraNuna clearly states:

I assume you are using the threaded version of Apache, else you are
not vulnerable to this type of attack.

Please justify your claims about this being a high priority issue,
affecting many people in the default installation, in the light of this.

More generally, if you believe this to be a significant issue for many
people, rather than making unfounded statements here, please do the
community a service and package the module that you wish to see included
in Ubuntu :)

Re: [Bug 432154] Re: dynamic block device attach/detach not functional with karmic KVM

2009-09-20 Thread Daniel Nurmi
Dustin, here is my progress thus far. On a install of Karmic alpha6 CD,
with qemu-kvm 0.11.0~rc2-0ubuntu4

FIRST:
---
boot VM
   ubuntu jaunty
   kernel 2.6.28-11-generic

load 'acpiphp' module in VM
   modprobe acpiphp

try 'virsh attach-device
   dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/foobar bs=1M count=64
   cat /tmp/meh
  disk type='block'driver name='phy'/source
dev='/tmp/foobar'/target dev='sdb'//disk
   virsh attach-device 1 /tmp/meh
  Connecting to uri: qemu:///system
  Device attached successfully

no dice, just see some SCSI init stuff in dmesg (see bug report), but no
actual disk devices are showing up

NEXT:
--

roll back qemu-kvm to version 0.11.0~rc2-0ubuntu2, same result

NEXT:
---

grab the 'kvm' binary from a jaunty box (1:84+dfsg-0ubuntu12.3), throw it in
/usr/bin on the karmic box, softlink /usr/share/qemu to /usr/share/kvm -
success! Somewhere between this version and 0ubuntu2, the problem cropped
up. I'm not sure if this is helpful or not. Here is the nice dmesg I get
