OK, this bug is about net usershare info returning an error by default, resulting in nautilus-share spurious messages. You suggest adding usershare path = /var/lib/samba/usershares to smb.conf. However, in default installs, net usershare info returns exactly the same error with or without that parameter set: $ net usershare info net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error No such file or directory Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing. That's because the default value of usershare path happens to be /var/lib/samba/usershares already. So again, I fail to see what this change would fix. What is this uncontroversial change ? If it's Please set in smb.conf: usershare path = /var/lib/samba/usershares, I fail to see what having it in the configuration file but not created on the filesystem would change to the error message you are observing. I tried net usershare info with the usershare path explicitely defined and got the exact same error as without it. The uncontrovorsial changes are the ones I already elaborated. Please let me know if you did not understand my English and I will try to explain things once again. Obviously the bug report asking for the directory to be created on the filesystem has not been filed. I will file it shortly, unless you have beaten me to it. But do you have anything else to add to this particular issue which might be relevant? What would setting usershare path = /var/lib/samba/usershares change exactly ? I'd rather file a separate bug for each of those issues you mention - since this change should be uncontroversial, I can not see any reason to not do it. Whereas differing people might agree / disagree about whether to enable / disable usershares by default.
