[Bug 303059] [NEW] Samba segfaults four-five times a day on Ubuntu Server (both hardy and intrepid)

2008-11-28 Thread Matteo Settenvini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

I receive a lot of these emails daily:

Message 3:
From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Nov 28 08:46:44 2008
X-Original-To: root
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Panic or segfault in Samba
Date: Thu, 27 Nov 2008 14:51:35 +0100 (CET)
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (root)

The Samba 'panic action' script, /usr/share/samba/panic-action,
was called for PID 8346 (/usr/sbin/smbd).

This means there was a problem with the program, such as a segfault.
Below is a backtrace for this process generated with gdb, which shows
the state of the program at the time the error occurred. The Samba log
files may contain additional information about the problem.

If the problem persists, you are encouraged to first install the
samba-dbg package, which contains the debugging symbols for the Samba
binaries. Then submit the provided information as a bug report to
Ubuntu by visiting this link:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+filebug

input not from terminal]

This was happening on Ubuntu Hardy server and continues happening in
Intrepid after an upgrade.

samba and winbind are at version 2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3.1.

Any sensible way to have a full bt?

[Bug 303059] Re: Samba segfaults four-five times a day on Ubuntu Server (both hardy and intrepid)

2008-11-28 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

2008/11/25 Chuck Short [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
 Hi Arnaud,

I had a look at this and it seems to be still broken for the newer
version. The debdiff below looks to be the correct fix but I rather have
the fix upstream in debian first before us.

I've just uploaded -10 to Sid...
you have still the few remaining Ub. things like:
- Orig maintainer
- *samples in /etc/nut
- nut in the dialout group

iirc, that's all. thanks to Morten. The Ubuntu sync should be fine by
tomorrow, once buildd has run all the platforms.

thanks again to Morten for his excellent contrib there ^_^

cheers,
Arnaud (/me forgot to close the bugs in the changelog, while
multiplexing packages builds and uploads!!!)

[Bug 303114] [NEW] package update-manager 1:0.93.34 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: SystemError in cache.commit(): E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

2008-11-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I was upgrading my Ubuntu system from Hardy to Intrepid. At the end of
the upgrade, the system reported that update-manager had not been
successfully upgraded, even though it did not report what the failure
was.

This may have had something to do with the fact that my samba-common
upgrade failed because I chose the experimental three-way-merge feature
to update the smb.conf configuration file but leaving my own changes in
there too. This fails due to a conflict while merging. I fixed it by
hand later on.

The system seems to have been upgraded correctly, though, so I'm not
sure why I got the update-manager package upgrade failure in the first
place.

[Bug 302914] Re: tomcat6-examples stops tomcat6 during installation - auto-deployement should be used instead

2008-11-28 Thread Thierry Carrez
Now that autodeployment works, yes ! For applications outside appBase,
it's possible to just drop the XML context file into
/etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost... and Tomcat should notice them in the
next 10 seconds. Undeploy works the same. This is valid for all three
webapps (-examples, -admin and -docs).

Could you try purging samba samba-common and libpam-smbpass:
$ sudo apt-get purge samba libpam-smbpass samba-common

Then reinstall:

If it succeeeds, then something must have been wrong with existing

I did it and it works (I don't have to modify the pam config file to log
in). The strange thing is that I didn't even know that samba was
installed on my system.

Here is the dpkg.log entry when I installed/upgraded to that version. It
did not fix the problem (and I must say I have spent a lot of time
