Hi @mathieu-tl,

Given the explanation in the previous comment, can't this be considered
a way to fix a bug - rather than a feature?

Thank you

This change has been introduced w/ the upgrade of multipath-tools to

The test described in the bug fails in Ubuntu 14.04.2.

The following packages were tried as well: libnuma1 2.0.9~rc5-1ubuntu3
and numactl  2.0.9~rc5-1ubuntu3

In all cases the test failed. The efix for 14.04.1 provided by Thierry
Fauck worked but it was not used in 14.04.02

[Bug 1435706] debdiff for multipath-tools 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.2

2015-06-24 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment on attachment From mauri...@br.ibm.com 2015-06-23 13:14

Hi Canonical,

This patch incorporates the upstream commits in order to apply the
fibrechannel dev_loss and fast_io_fail timeout attributes from
multipath.conf into sysfs.

It targets the 14.04.x LTS series, but it should apply fine to 14.10 and
15.04 (except for debian/changelog context lines, obviously). No need
for 15.10 which should get a multipath-tools upgrade that includes the
commits.

Thanks!

With the patch applied, the fc timeout attributes correctly propagate
through multipath verbose logs, and the sysfs attributes -- verification
procedure attached.

Please provide output from the following:

cat /etc/services | egrep "netbios|microsoft|ipp"
netstat -l | egrep "netbios|microsoft|ipp"
lsof | egrep "netbios|microsoft|ipp"
ps awfux | egrep "smb[d]|nmb[d]"

I'm guessing the cups errors are benign in the log file you attached. I
see those same messages on my system (probably just because nothing is
listening on the ipp port) and I am not experiencing the problem you
see.

Are there any other interesting logs in "/var/log/samba/"? There is a
"cores" directory so please check that, and check /var/log/syslog for
evidence of a crash in smbd or nmbd. Or anything else interesting in
syslog. Do you see any errors when you restart smbd? Does restarting
it have any effect on the problem?

Also, please collect the "sosreport" and attach it to the bug. You can
"apt-get install sosreport" if not already installed.

You are using entirely the as-installed smbd configuration here, I
assume, else you would have reported otherwise? Thx.

Not sure what to suggest next except to increase the debug level of smbd and
repeat the operation.

You can edit /etc/init/smbd.conf and add "-d 10" to the "exec smbd"
cmdline.  Then:

service smbd restart
tail -f /var/log/samba/log.smbd
smbclient -L localhost -U root

That will show the operation from the server side which will hopefully
shed light on the problem.

Also: can you in fact connect from any client, or is it completely
broken? Even trying the smbclient test from a different node might give
a different result, possibly?

Hi?
We did your instructions and got the following output:

Well, I'm quickly exhausting my samba expertise here. I don't know how to
interpret all the debug messages but I'll say: your output doesn't really
contain anything different from mine, and on my system everything seems to be
working.

Because there are no apparent errors from samba I'm starting to suspect
some networking issue, for lack of better explanation. I guess Ubuntu
uses "apparmor" instead of selinux here, and I'm not as familiar with
apparmor, but it looks like you can do the following to shut it down.
Suggest running the status first to see if anything odd:

service apparmor status
service apparmor teardown

If that doesn't help I am out of ideas.

Doing a broad search on NT_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT doesn't point to anything
specific. apparently it's a common problem that pops over recent years
and most cases are either attributed to network problems or
indeterminate.

Ubuntu: really need your help here. Please get this assigned and give
us an initial read as soon as you can. thanks!

Hi Robie,

I think we have provided the steps to reproduce, and the expected vs.
actual result, and also verbose debug output from samba on the client-
side and the server-side.

I can't explain why it's not reproducible on your system; it's not
reproducible on mine, either. But I am testing with the BE builld of
Ubuntu, not the LE build, so it's possible there is some bug in the LE
version that I'm not seeing. You didn't say whether you are using BE or
LE in your tests.

I have asked the IBM team several times if this is reproducible on a
fresh system install with no changes to samba configuration, and they
tell me is. Apologies if this turns out to be a configuration issue or
some other not-a-bug, but at the moment we don't know what the problem
is, so I think we need next steps for continued debugging. If you don't
see anything suspicious in the log output provided, can you suggest some
other debug to collect or or other tests to run?

We will endeavor to provide what you request in a timely fashion, so
would appreciate it if you can kindly change the status from
"incomplete" on the LP side. Thx.

How could we kill udev while issuing the command, please. And please
note that this problem cannot be reproduced with latest 3.2 parted.

Hi Canonical,

Can we get this assigned to someone who can look at it please?
Apparently I don't have privileges to change the status on the launchpad
side, and that's not really our role anyway. Thx.

[Bug 1473903] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2015-07-22 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From mauri...@br.ibm.com 2015-07-22 22:09 EDT---
Just to sum up with what has already been said.

parted creates the 'p1' block device, via libparted (see dm_add_partition() in
arch/linux.c, IIRC)
kpartx creates the '-part1' block device (see /lib/udev/rules.d/*-kpartx.rules).

In order to test that the '-part1' block device won't show up, you can disable
the kpartx.rules file temporarily.
Something like this:
$ sudo mv /lib/udev/rules.d/*-kpartx.rules
/lib/udev/rules.d/*-kpartx.rules.disabled
$ sudo udevadm control --reload

Another thought.
Not sure why latest parted doesn't show this problem (2 block devices for
partition #1)
If only 'p1' is created, it seems the kpartx udev rules either fail or are not
run.
If only '-part1' is created, it seems parted didn't create the partition in the
devmap.

Hi,
Ubuntu 14.04.3 is the first build for power system. I'm not sure if the early
version supports power system. Could you tell me how to install the early
version ? Thanks.

The version of samba & smbclient we tested:

The parted-3.2 NEWS file provides the info:
libparted: On multipath systems new partitions would sometimes not appear,
reporting 'device-mapper: create ioctl failed: Device or resource busy' until
the system was rebooted. Added dm_udev_wait calls to synchronize parted with
udev.
This refer to thread
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-parted/2010-09/msg7.html
pointing to a patch in libparted/arch/linux.c.
Apparently that patch could be added to current patches adding the dm-*
functionailities already available in current 2.3 version.

Could it be possible to validate the idea of just applying that
udev_sync patch makes the difference ?

That is not how LTS release works. We cannot simply ask them to upgrade
packages.

Ubuntu 14.04.3 currently has ships ipmitool version 1.8.13-1. If we want
to add any new feature, we will need to cherry-pick/backport patches to
add support for that.

Also, we are very late for 14.04.3 GA, meaning that they Canonical will
not probably not accept it for GA time-frame. This is something that
will be added after GA, IMO.

Can someone work on the cherry-pick/backport of the required patches?

Hi,
I've tried the samba version 2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2.14.04.8 and still reached

The GA is just a few days away. From the last hot bug call, Breno would
document this issue on the Canonical wiki Power page while we continue to
pursue the problem.

Hi Canonical.

Can we get this addressed with some higher priority, please? This has
been open for several weeks and all the necessary info was really
provided from the start..

It looks like the problem is reproducible on a fresh install of 14.04.03
LE and *not* reproducible on the BE of the same release, and both these
results have been reproduced on your side as well.

We've already provided detailed log output from both client and server
side, and that does not seem to show any problem. If there is more info
we can provide please let us know. But really, if its reproducible on
you side that shouldn't be necessary.

Thank you!

Hi Luciano / Ping,
Apologies for the delayed reply as I was away on vacation last few days.

I tried to apply the patch from the link in comment #20.
Few things I noticed was,
- In parted (GNU parted) 2.3 which is on Ubuntu14.04.3:
There is no _dm_remove_map_name() in libparted/arch/linux.c, hence the patch
failes to apply at this part.
Ignoring the above function and making the changes for _dm_add_partition()
according to the patch and building the package, fails with

../configure: line 32229: syntax error near unexpected token `CHECK,'
../configure: line 32229: `PKG_CHECK_MODULES(CHECK, check >= 0.9.3,
have_check=yes, have_check=no)'
make: *** [build-deb/config.status] Error 2
dpkg-buildpackage: error: debian/rules build gave error exit status 2

Can anyone help me to fix this error and help me to proceed in the
package building ?

Hi Dave, Update from bug call today we discussed on the call today with Michael
Hohnbaum that Diane has help prioritize some of the bugs. This one is on
Canonical's list but others are taking higher priority since this one is not a
regression and has been an issue on multiple releases.

Hi,
Could you tell me how to install the samba packages manually? I found that the
dependency is really complex and many packages are not in the repository(e.g.
package samba-common). If possiable, it's better to tell me how to install it
from 'trusty-proposed' because it will not involve other issue (e.g. the
dependency issue) into this bug. Thanks.

The documentation is quite complete at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed. I also told you that the
package is 4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2.14.04.9 and not 2:4.1.6+dfsg-
1ubuntu2.14.04.9. Did you looked for it?

BTW, If you provide the access information about the machine, I will get
it installed for you.

The test described in the bug fails in Ubuntu 14.04.2.

The following packages were tried as well: libnuma1 2.0.9~rc5-1ubuntu3
and numactl  2.0.9~rc5-1ubuntu3

Subject: [PATCH] libnuma.so On ppc64el, cpu number are not contigous

Commit 32075635db57c3d5efe12f8fb569af857e01ccad issuea warning message
/sys not mounted when it find a non existent cpu number, and that's the

Has this patch been accepted by maintainers? The Canonical status is fix

Looking at parted-2.3 on trusty the code for dm_udev_wait(cookie) is already
part of the installed patches, so you are right this is not related to our
issue.

[Bug 1489379] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2015-09-02 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From mauri...@br.ibm.com 2015-09-02 22:11 EDT---
Today's work on this..

This is not so simple to "fix".

libchecktur.so really requires a dynamic libgcc because it uses pthreads
(namely pthread_cancel).
it can go without a link-time dependency on libgcc *if* it's not built with
-fexceptions.

it will run, but crash when pthread_cancel() is called.
I think this is already happening w/ other pieces of the code (libmultipath,
iirc) - it's just luck it didn't crash yet.

Some testing/experiments.

$ cat test.c
#include
#include

void * loop(void *arg) {
}

int main() {
pthread_t thread;
pthread_create(&thread, NULL, &loop, NULL);
pthread_cancel(thread);  // this requires libgcc_s.so
return 0;
}

$ gcc -pthread -o test test.c

$ ./test; echo $?
0

$ ldd test
linux-vdso64.so.1 =>  (0x3fff8173)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/powerpc64le-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0
(0x3fff816e)
libc.so.6 => /lib/powerpc64le-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 (0x3fff8150)
/lib64/ld64.so.2 (0x5013)

^ notice there's no dependency on libgcc_s at link-time, it's a run-time
dlopen() in pthread_cancel_init()

$ find /lib -name libgcc_s.so.1
/lib/powerpc64le-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1

On installer:

~ # ./test
libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed for pthread_cancel to work
Aborted

~ # find /lib -name libgcc_s.so.1
~ #

To be continued.

Some developer-backed reference for this as well:

(In reply to comment #15)
> libchecktur.so really requires a dynamic libgcc because it uses pthreads
> (namely pthread_cancel).

"""
> Wonder if someone can explain why pthread_cancel_init() dlopens
> libgcc_s.so.1?

Thread cancellation requires unwinding which is implemented by
compiler helper routines.

How to reproduce with QEMU/KVM (2 arguments as "-drive
file=test.qcow2,serial=helloworld")

Force the path checker to tur:

~ # cat /etc/multipath.conf
defaults {
user_friendly_names yes
path_checker tur
}

blacklist_exceptions {
property ID_SERIAL
}

Notice the dlopen() error, and paths got no uuids, thus blacklisted:

--- Comment From mauri...@br.ibm.com 2015-09-03 11:11 EDT---
How to put libgcc_s.so.1 (from the udeb package) in the installer environment,
for testing/work-around purposes:

1) Go to https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/wily/ppc64el/libgcc1/
2) Click the latest (top-most) "Version" link (e.g., 1:5.2.1-15ubuntu5)
from the Release "Pocket" (unless you know you should use Proposed)
3) Copy the link address of the ".deb" file in the "Downloadable files" section
(e.g., http://.../libgcc1_5.2.1-15ubuntu5_ppc64el.deb)

4) On the installer, right after network configuration (username configuration
stage),
select "Go Back", and "Execute a shell"
5) Run the following commands:
~ # wget
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/215539827/libgcc1_5.2.1-15ubuntu5_ppc64el.deb
~ # ar x libgcc1_*.deb
~ # xzcat data.tar.xz | tar x ./lib/powerpc64le-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1 -C /
~ # exit

~ # ls /lib/powerpc64le-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1
/lib/powerpc64le-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1

The result with the previous test binary as well (multipath in previous
comment):

~ # ./test
~ #

Fortunately enough, the *only* ELF (binary/shared-library) in the

Okay, using a custom libchecktur.so built without -fexceptions..
It works fine in the installer environment, for its purposes.

This should be OK as there's no multipathd (which exercises the path checkers
more) running in the installer.
I'll formalize/support this in another comment.

The only places that pthread_cancel() is called in libchecktur.so (tur.c +
libsg.c) are 2 functions in tur.c:
1) libcheck_free()
2) libcheck_check()

And their calls to pthread_cancel() are /not/ exercised when /not/ in daemon
mode
(i.e., running as multipath, not multipathd; as in the installer).

It's only in daemon mode that the checker goes into async mode -- via
get_state() -> checker_set_async().
- And it's only in async mode that libcheck_check() might call pthread_cancel(),
- And it's only in async mode that libcheck_check() might set 'holders' to a
value
for which libcheck_free() might call pthread_cancel() (holders > 1).

file libmultipath/discovery.c:

get_state (struct path * pp, int daemon)
{
...
condlog(3, "%s: get_state", pp->dev);

if (!checker_selected(c)) {
...
select_checker(pp);
if (!checker_selected(c)) {
condlog(3, "%s: No checker selected", pp->dev);
return PATH_UNCHECKED;
}
...
if (daemon)
checker_set_async(c);

file libmultipath/checkers.c:

void checker_set_async (struct checker * c)
{
if (!c)
return;
c->sync = 0;
}

file libmultipath/checkers/tur.c:

extern int
libcheck_check (struct checker * c)
{
...
if (c->sync)
return tur_check(c->fd, c->timeout, c->message);

/*
* Async mode
*/
...
if (ct->running) {
...
if (tur_check_async_timeout(c)) {
condlog(3, "%d:%d: tur checker timeout",
TUR_DEVT(ct));
pthread_cancel(ct->thread);
...
/* Start new TUR checker */
...
ct->holders++;

int libcheck_init (struct checker * c)
{
...
ct->holders = 1;
...

void libcheck_free (struct checker * c)
...
ct->holders--;
...
if (holders)
pthread_cancel(thread);
...

With the patch applied, the fc timeout attributes correctly propagate
through multipath verbose logs, and the sysfs attributes -- verification

[Bug 1435706] debdiff for multipath-tools 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.2

Hi Canonical,

This patch incorporates the upstream commits in order to apply the
fibrechannel dev_loss and fast_io_fail timeout attributes from
multipath.conf into sysfs.

It targets the 14.04.x LTS series, but it should apply fine to 14.10 and
15.04 (except for debian/changelog context lines, obviously). No need
for 15.10 which should get a multipath-tools upgrade that includes the
commits.

Thanks!

David and his team are having a look after Pavaman's latest test.
There's at least a problem with all component trying to be updated whereas only
one was asked to ("component 1" passed and component 0,1 trying to be upgraded).
In ipmitool-1.8.15-cvs there's no such issue.

This blocks testing with IPR controllers, as paths cannot be discovered.

Thanks

The following packages were tried as well: libnuma1 2.0.9~rc5-1ubuntu3

In all cases the test failed. The efix for 14.04.1 provided by Thierry

Lowering priority.
We're already customizing multipath.conf anyway, and this shouldn't get in the

and numactl  2.0.9~rc5-1ubuntu3

In all cases the test failed. The efix for 14.04.1 provided by Thierry
Fauck worked but it was not used in 14.04.02

Subject: [PATCH] libnuma.so On ppc64el, cpu number are not contigous

Commit 32075635db57c3d5efe12f8fb569af857e01ccad issuea warning message
/sys not mounted when it find a non existent cpu number, and that's the

Has this patch been accepted by maintainers? The Canonical status is fix
released. Is there a fix that should be pulled and tested?
