Re: Live translation

2020-02-20 Thread Jwtiyar ali
Hello Dear Gunnar
I did sent email to you before but didn't get answer.
The last time we discussed addition of kurdish(sorani) to ubuntu but we
were missing ckb_IQ in glibc upstream this problem is fixed and its
available and approved from 1 february with latest master version of glibc
2.31 .
Another problem we faced was lack of kurdish(sorani) translation and it was
0.6% nowadays we are growing it fast today is %2.2 approximately and you
told us that time may be you can make an exception for our kurdish(sorani)
language to be available in ubuntu if reached %2 now we did reach it
already.
Can you please make an connection to see what we can do about that?
Your help really appreciated.

That sounds promising indeed. There are a couple of more things I'd like
to mention.

Ubuntu is a distro, which means that most of the packages are best
translated upstream. An example: Assuming that it's standard Ubuntu with
GNOME you are focused on, it would be better if you translated the GNOME
packages via the GNOME interface at first hand:

https://l10n.gnome.org/

That way the translations would benefit other Linux users, and not only
Ubuntu users.

I'm not sure that is possible currently, though. The reason is that the
ckb_IQ locale is currently only known in Ubuntu.

To fix that, we'd need to get the ckb_IQ locale approved in glibc
upstream. There is already a bug for the purpose:

https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=9809

But in the latest comment one of the developers asked a few questions.
It would be very good if you or someone else in the Kurdish (Sorani)
team could answer those questions.

In any case I wish you all luck with establishing Kurdish (Sorani) as a
new language in Ubuntu!

Hello, and sorry for a bit late reply

For languages which have language packs in Ubuntu, those language packs
are updated weekly in the development version a few months before each
release. So for those, the translators have to wait for the next
language pack update to see the result of recently translated strings.

However, language packs are not created for all languages. A threshold
is applied so language packs are created only for languages where at
least 5% of the strings have been translated. As regards Kurdish
(Sorani), and if I do the math correctly, only 0.6% of the strings are
translated currently.

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/eoan/+lang/ckb

Almost 13000 more strings need to be translated into Kurdish (Sorani) to
reach 5%.

Until that has happened, and thus until the creation of the ckb language
packs has started, I don't really see a practicable way to study the
result of the translations.

Now, that 5% threshold is not a natural law. I can think of asking for
an exception in order to make it easier to establish Kurdish (Sorani) as
one of the supported languages in Ubuntu, i.e. with ckb language packs.
But before I try that, I'd like to see a substantial increase of the
number of translated strings. Say approximately 4000 more translations
to reach ~2%.

It's not doable to explain all aspects of Ubuntu in a reply like this.
Please feel welcome to ask for clarifications.
