 Hiya,

I'm based near Manchester and though I've never been to a ManLUG
meeting, I know a load of people who do and hangout on #manlug on
irc.oftc.net (I'm tdobson - feel free to say hi)

There is actually quite a broad spectrum of tech groups in the northwest.

Thanks for that excellent summary Tim, I really should have remembered
Manchester Free Software! To the OP, don't be put off by the name,
there are plenty of people running Ubuntu in the group (as well as
gnewsense). I would strongly recommend joining both the manlug [1] and
MFS [2] mailing lists to keep up with events in the area. As Tim said,
the drupal talk in February should be really interesting. Also, if
you're interested in the more social side of things, then I would
strongly recommend the monthly #manlug currybeer on 6th February.

There is actually quite a broad spectrum of tech groups in the northwest.

In Manchester;
There is ManLUG[1] - a traditional LUG focused (as far as I know) around
technological things one can achieve with Linux and software for Linux,
sometimes has presentations

There is Manchester Free Software Group[2] - a group to compliment
Manchester's other tech groups which focuses more on the ideological
side of things but frequently has talks concentrating on things that can
be achieved with free software (or the ideology) for anyone who is
interested. These sometimes focus on aspects of GNU/Linux but cover a
wide range of areas - the next talk is on Drupal for instance.
(Probably not the best people to ask how to get Adobe Flash 10 running.)

[3] Manchester BSD User Group - a friendly group of '*BSD Users' who
meet up regularly but in my experience are prone to use Darwin (OS X)
and talk about everything except BSD, but if you wanted to know anything
about BSD, they'd be the bunch.

There are plenty more tech orientated groups in Manchester, focusing on
various different things, Geekup[4], DFEY-NW[5] and Manchester Geek Girl
Dinners[6] being just a few.

Hope this helps,

Tim

Where do MANlug hold their meetings?
IIRC it's in the University somewhere but I'm not sure.

The 'how to find us' page has more information [1]. The meetings are
held in the Kilburn building on Oxford Rd, which is a short bus ride
or walk from town (I think a few buses from Stockport stop nearby too,
otherwise you can catch the train to Oxford Rd Station).

[1] http://www.manlug.org/content/view/146/1/

I would be interested to hear what the turnout is like for the group. I
normally live in Stockport but am currently living in Mountain View,
California and while I've been out here I've been to the local LUGs and want
to continue with MANlug when I get back.

Turnout is usually pretty good. They used to have a regular talks but
haven't had one in a while, so it tends to be an informal chat and
play with the computers at the Uni. I don't go often enough to get an
accurate idea of numbers but I'd guess between 10 to 20.

Also, don't forget the #manlug group [2] who meet up for their
currybeer evening once a month. See http://www.manlug.org.uk/ for
details.

[2] Mostly manlug members who also hang out on IRC (see the website
for server details).

 Hi,

Having asked around members of the Ubuntu UK community there has been
quite a luke warm response to the idea of a bug jam (global one
scheduled for 8th-10th August). I thought there might be something
like 30-50 people interested in attending a physical event, but after
discussion it seems that 10 is a more realistic figure.

10 people can be manageable, more so than 30 (looking on the bright side).
I'm up for such an event.

August is also a tricky month. Many people are on holiday, kids are
off school, and generally people have their minds on other things.
Traditionally many LUGs have lower turnouts at meetings in August
 than
 other months.

Could leave it til September, after the holiday season.

If a LUG is having a meet on that day then it might be good to turn
up to that, and do the bug jamming there.

The other option that is worth considering is the Pembury pub in London.
 We
could go there on either Sat or Sun or both during the day. They have
 Wifi

and plenty of space to set out laptops and jam.

Local to me so I'll vote for the Pembury. Friendly, free software
users, good beer. Very happy to check all their barrels for bugs. Am
wondering if the good burghers of Hackney will be doing Sunday lunch
though; Saturday during the day might be better.
