[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 483464] [NEW] [PM800]Bad graphics modes.
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Here is my previous unsolved bug about the problem: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video- openchrome/+bug/350330 Now I have some more information about it: xrandr shows graphics modes that are not available for my LCD matrixs (i.e matrix is up to 1024x768 , xrandr shows few modes upper than it, i.e. 1920x1440) I think ubuntu get's the highest mode by default ( IN: instalator , usplash , gdm login manager , gdm user session) Instalator: I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 seeing only upper left part of the screen (1024x768 from 1920x1440) by clicking ENTER as "next" button. usplash : I've changed /etc/usplash.conf to 1024x768 , add vga=791 to grub.conf , and made sudo update-initramfs gdm user session: I've used change resolution tool to make it 1024x768 gdm login manager: it's still 1920x1440 So, now when booting, first i can see white ubuntu logo i good resolution , then I see this brown progress screen and login manager in 1920x1440, after provide login and password it's going to proper 1024x768 (brown progress and desktop) 1) After CTRL+ALT+F1 (F2 etc) i have screen with artefacts (lines in different colors) , i'm sure its bad video mode. 2) Once CTRL+ALT+F1 got me into proper text mode, but only once and I dont know why. 3) Video card (after lspci) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 471646] Re: [K8M800]with kernel 2.6.31-14-generic my X server crashes during KDE 4.3.2 startup
Thanks for the suggestion. I have removed the "NoAccel" line and added the directive to disable DRI. I now have, in xorg.conf, Section "Device" Identifier "Configured Video Device" EndSection ... Section "Module" Disable "dri" EndSection My Xorg.0.log, after successfully starting a KDE session, is attached. This is much more performant than "NoAccel", I guess because 2D rendering still works. By the way, is there any way to test these things remotely? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 473436] Re: Primary monitor doesn't wake up out of power save mode
I can report this as well, though in my configuration it is a laptop with a Quadro FX770M chip. The laptop display will resume from a power save, the attached external display (via DisplayPort) does not. After power cycling the external display, visibility is restored, but it's extremely aggravating to have to repeatedly power-cycle that external display. I saw a note in one of the later nvidia drivers that they resolved a power-save problem with DisplayPort attached devices, though I don't know if this is related. -- Primary monitor doesn't wake up out of power save mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/473436 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 436816] Re: screen wakes up right after it has been suspended
Correct; the screen does a proper power off (as does the external monitor) followed by powering back on in response to user input for about twelve hours after the X session is started. Once the problem begins, the only way to restore the correct screen power off behaviour is to completely restart the X session (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart). I've just noticed in the last day or so that having the power management display sleep value be less than the screen saver blank period seems to delay the onset of the issue. -- screen wakes up right after it has been suspended https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/436816 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 466937] Re: computer freeze, xorg at 100% CPU
I think we can mark this as solved. Based on this article: http://magazine.redhat.com/2007/11/20/tips-and-tricks-why-does-xorgs-cpu-usage-shoot-up-when-using-nvidias-driver/ I changed my xorg.conf file by adding to the "Device" section Option "UseEvents" "true" I don't know what that option is defaulted to off. In other words, I don't know what the possible downside is to changing this option as I did, but since I made the change on the weekend I've had over 2 days uptime. I know that may not seem like much, but I never had anything over 4 hours before, so I'm pretty sure that my problem's fixed. I've attached complete xorg.conf for reference. I suspect that this fix would have closed bug #435011 as well (and possibly Bug #434416 since it's so similar) but I haven't tested. Issue seems to be the same as what is reported in bug reports 160866 and 447283. I posted in 160866, but I'll put the same thing here. I am experiencing hue shift in all my video players. The hue shift makes skin color look a slightly greenish blue, close to cyan. That which should be dark red becomes dark green. I primarily use VLC, but the same problem is in Movie Player and MPlayer. In VLC, I adjusted the hue to correct the issue, but the issue in inconsistent. When I start a video, the issue may or may not be active. If I fullscreen the video, if the issue is inactive, it then may activate, or if it is active, it may stop, or there will be no change. I also get the same result when I skip ahead in the video, forcing me to be constantly turning off and on the hue adjustment. I was thinking of doing a clean install of v9.10, but from the comments various threads, doing so won't fix the problem. Don't know if this is a contributing factor, but I am using the NVIDIA graphics driver v185. -- Invalid hue on video (video only, OpenGL is ok) on nvidia - ubuntu 9.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/472117 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

glxinfo and glxinfo -i don't work in the xterm ltsp login session. I get an error: "name of display 192.168.0.110:7.0 X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation) Major Opcode of failed request: 138 (DRI2) Minor Opcode of failed request: 1 (DRI2Connect) Serial number of failed request: 19 ..." glxinfo -i within an Xsession on the live-CD system is interesting in that it immediately kicks me out of the session to a logon screen, and corrupts the video on all the VTs. That behaviour is identical to what happens, when the netbooted ltsp client attempts to login from the ldm login screen into the server X session. Then also, the client side virtual terminals get a corrupted screen. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 464591] Re: upgrade breaks graphic drivers and x, preventing login or startx
When I upgraded to Karmic I noticed that the resolutions and refresh rates were lower than in Jaunty. So I wrote higher values into the Xorg.conf and rebooted. After reboot I got the same flickering problems as the others. I used the recovery CD to delete these values, at one time even deleting the Xorg.conf file, and OS booted fine. Karmic does not write to an Xorg.conf file, it creates its own values, and I do not know were it stores this configuration, if at all. The Xorg.log shows you how it does this. The mechanism and video drivers work different in Karmic, then in Jaunty. Xorg.conf is not even needed under Karmic, but if it is present, it will read the values, and if higher then the Karmic prober, it will fail to boot and display properly. So if one leaves the Xorg.conf file alone or even deletes it, Karmic will be all-right. My concern is, that, I want the higher resolutions & refresh rates that Jaunty gave me. Karmic refuses to give the video card and monitor the maximum values that they are capable of. I filed 3 bugs: 450055, 458624, 458625, on: restrictive & unalterable resolutions & low refresh rates - xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) - Undecided Confirmed - under Karmic, to get the developers attention. also bug # 428477 Display configuration: a new version of displayconfig-gtk is necessary - gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) - WishlistNew - I really wished, I had a more direct line to the developers, to encourage them to fix these annoyances. Perhaps, a new way of approaching bugs is necessary, to quickly resolve problems, before going on to the next Ubuntu version?! [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 462249] Re: Right ALT key does not work
I hit this problem after installing a second keyboard layout. I was able to reenable the right Alt key by going to the Keyboard Preferences -> Layouts -> Layout Options -> Key(s) to Change Layout and unchecking "Both Alt keys together". Go figure. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 12301] Re: monitor off at boot causes bad resolution
@Bryce Harrington: I switched back to the regular OSS driver, and the problem persists. This is *not* an nvidia driver issue (or at least is not limited to the nvidia driver). Also note that many people, with different configurations from the original reporter, *have* filed their own reports, but they keep getting closed as being duplicates of this issue. So apparently neither a new bug report nor reopening the original is correct, so I'm not sure what I'm truly expected to do, keep taking the run-around until I give up and pretend the problem doesn't exist? Additionally, rc3's workaround does not work for me with either the OSS driver or the nvidia one. ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Released => New -- monitor off at boot causes bad resolution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/12301 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is a direct subscriber. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: evolution I received a meeting request, to which I tried to reply. This worked correctly by showing a new message dialogue with the sender filled in and the quoted original meeting request text (the .ics). When trying to add a MS Word .doc file as an attachment (both by drag/drop from nautilus and using the add attachment button), the X-server crashed resulting in GDM being restarted. After login, this behaviour is reproducible. Exchange was configured as the evolution back-end. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 483832] Re: AMD64x2, Nvidia, Gnome and KDE, no virtual ttys, and shell in konsole or gnome terminal dies
Well, I reinstalled the laptop, and virtual ttys worked normally. I then used the Hardware Drivers applet, which offered the Broadcomm B43 wireless driver and the Nvidia "185" driver. I have left out the Broadcomm for now, but when I installed the Nvidia and rebooted, virtual consoles were again a dysfunctional black screen. I should have guessed before filing the bug report, but on the other hand it is many years since I have had a Nvidia bug, and that was before Ubuntu existed. I am going to do the desktop machine as well, just to confirm this. but it will be at least 24 hours. I will also bring my best machine, a quad core with ATI graphics, up to 9.10 to see what happens there, just in case it is more complex than it seems. I guess that when I have gathered more data, the only thing that will be possible is to feed the bug report upstream to Nvidia, and hope that they fix it. This is not the place for a rant about closed source drivers, but I have an opinion, and it is not good! One more thing to do tonight. I have 20 minutes or so, so I will try the Nvidia "173" driver. Don't know if it will work with my hardware, but worth a try. -- AMD64x2, Nvidia, Gnome and KDE, no virtual ttys, and shell in konsole or gnome terminal dies https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/483832 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Thanks. For the future, please attach the logs instead of pasting them into the comments. You are using the -openchrome driver (with the "via" 3D driver) so it is certainly not a radeon issue here. Tried the GDM fix with no success. After removing xserver-xorg-video-intel, I get X working and usable (except screen resolutions that are not complete). So the problem is really related to this package. ** Package changed: linux (Ubuntu) => xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) -- [i915][Karmic-RC] gdm crashes in a loop after fresh install https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/460315 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 460315] [NEW] [i915][Karmic-RC] gdm crashes in a loop after fresh install
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Just installed Karmic from RC desktop CD. Install goes fine, the live CD boots and X works with no issues in the install process. Once the install is finished, we go for first reboot. All seems normal until GDM tries to load. At this point in time, I get the mouse cursor and sometimes de loading icon, and the screen looses signal and the same thing starts over again in an infinie loop. At a guess, I'd say xorg crashes when launched by GDM. Immediate consequence is that I can not finish the install of Karmic on this machine (that's using ubuntu since years) so it's critical. If I trigger it just before gdm tries to load, I can get into a terminal. I've tried successfully to run 'startx', there Gnome loads up. All attempts to restart GDM result into the same infinite loop. Since the i915 module doesn't seem to be correctly loaded, I tried Insmod like this : insmod -f /lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko. Returns error "-1 Unknown symbol in module". modprobe i915 returns a Fatal error : "Error inserting i915 (/lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko): No such device. My guess is that there is something wrong in that package. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Confirmed ** Tags: crash -- [i915][Karmic-RC] gdm crashes in a loop after fresh install https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/460315 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver
@jackmetal: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LTS I think we need to bring more attention to this bug - and according to the Ubuntu Forums post referenced by Josh ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg- server/+bug/353126/comments/152 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1270527 ) one way to accomplish this would be to get more people to mark themselves as affected by it. Since this bug seems to affect everyone running Ubuntu post 8.10 with Compiz enabled, getting hordes of people to mark themselves as affected should be pretty easy. By-the-way: specifying XSERVER as vesa leaves all screens black. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 370292] Re: [i855] X freezing on intel 855GM
Hello, I experiment a similar problem with my ASUS S5N (Graphic card intel 92852/855GM) Since I upgraded my laptop to 9.10 from 9.04 I experiment random freeze on GDM sessions. Sometimes I can move the mose but nothing else can be done. I didn't tried SSH because I never installed this on my computers (I think I wil try) But it is clearly link to XOrg or GDM as I didn't have problems when I quickly switch to console tty1 (CTRL+ALT+F1) I suspect an interaction with kernel. When I boot on "normal" 2.6.31-15-generic kernel My computer freezes. When I boot on "Old" 2.6.28-16-generic kernel My computer does not freeze but I don't see mouse cursor and my touchpad is deactivated. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 305301] Re: [RC410] Xpress 200M hangs when resuming from suspend with DRI (needs KMS)
Yes, we still need KMS to get this fixed, but KMS needs fixing too :) It is pretty clear (from upstream) that this will never be fixed in the old non-KMS path. I can only recommend that you confirm in the freedesktop bug that -rc7 does not help. Ubuntu 10.04 will probably use KMS by default on radeon, so it is good that you test it and help iron out bugs. The upstream developers do not care so much about non-KMS bugs any longer, and Ubuntu can not do this on its own. -- [RC410] Xpress 200M hangs when resuming from suspend with DRI (needs KMS) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/305301 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 483832] Re: AMD64x2, Nvidia, Gnome and KDE, no virtual ttys, and shell in konsole or gnome terminal dies
WeatherGod, Thanks for your quick response. I am not using Compiz, and have now uninstalled it, and I can't yet tell if it started after a particular update. As I always use separate /home partitions for my data, it should be fairly easy to start again with a fresh install, and add the few drivers and updates, one at a time, until it breaks. I will report back when I have done that. I will start without the Nvidia driver, as it has to be one of the suspects. Also I will do it on the Gnome installation, to avoid confusion with KDE4 bugs, of which there still are more than a few.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 484412] [NEW] Xorg freezes after short time (i855GM)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Affected system: Maxdata Pro 600i Graphic Chip: Intel 855GM Behaviour: System gets locally inresponsitive after a short time when Xorg started. Mouse cursor is still moveable, but system doesn't react on mouse click, keyboard clicks or even Ctrl-Alt F2 for console. However, system is fully available using openssh-server. System had been upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10, but bug also exists when using Karmic Live-CD. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 465470] Re: KDE doesn't start after 9.10 update. Radeon? KDM?
I've got a workaround which I can live! Problem is: Every poweron will start ubuntu in low graphics mode. Sadly I get never ever a chance to work in that mode, cause it drives my Monitor with 125kHz V-Sync and 280Hz H-Sync. Every reboot didn't help. BUT: If I bootup for only one time in recovery mode and use "resume normal bootup" (or so...), ubuntu starts in textmode without X. Now I login normally and type "xinit" on the console. The X-Server will startup normal in correct resolution and a xterm window waits for input. I end the session with Ctrl-D and reboot. Now it works fine and every reboot till the next power down. My notebook is a Dell inspiron 6400 with an internal intel graphics 945GM. Hope it helps... Rainer -- KDE doesn't start after 9.10 update. Radeon? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 219950] Re: Font size on login screen is too big with nvidia-glx-new
This bug affects me on Karmic with nvidia-graphics-drivers-185 and also affected me with Jaunty. In my case I have a 720p widescreen LCD TV connected through HDMI via an amplifier. The funny thing is if I first launch the nvidia app and choose the correct resolution the display is perfect, but if I then save xorg.conf and restart x the screen fonts are too big. I have not yet had a chance to try the selected fix. Importantly, (and admittedly this is OT for this bug report) with HDMI the default screen size on the Karmic installer makes usability during install very difficult ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => New ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- Font size on login screen is too big with nvidia-glx-new https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/219950 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 305301] Re: [RC410] Xpress 200M hangs when resuming from suspend with DRI (needs KMS)
Tormod, should we change "needs KMS"? Although, kms is a great feature and everyone needs it, it does not help solving our problem even with the patch provided by Dave.
