[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 776772] Re: Fatal Error: No screens found in xorg.o.log

2011-05-19 Thread cjcolella
I'm having the exact same problem on a laptop with an Intel Mobile 4
Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller. Random X crashes all the
time with 11.04, and I cannot discern a cause. Whatever was changed in
the new Update driver, it had no effect.

After logging back in (after it kicks me the login screen) I can no
longer connect to any network until I reboot.

It's a very serious problem, as it makes 11.04 unstable.

2011-05-19 Thread Joe Merten
It also affects to me.
Kubuntu 11.04 (continously upgraded since 9.04).
Kernel 2.6.38-8 generic (PAE won't work with nVidia proprietary driver)
NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M (rev a1)
Driver: 270.41.06
X Server 1.10.1
Disabling Compiz won't help.
konsole --notransparency helps

nVidia Driver: 173.14.30 work, but at terrible performance.
Nouveau could be a solution but it seems not work with DisplayPort.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 785044] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2011-05-19 Thread Campbell Boyd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

The problem is between power up and login, the screen goes into standby
and disk activity drops to a low level/ceases. The first instance of
this I could not recover from and even booting in safe mode gave me
nothing. I then installed a completely fresh 11.04, on a different
partition. All went well for a few days and then this morning, the
freeze recurred. This time, however, the safe mode boot worked and, on
choosing the basic graphics options, everything went ok and the system
is back up and running. I haven't rebooted sincejust in case.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727620] Re: [Radeon HD 5650 and 5470] Kernel BUG during recovery boot and in normal boot (Hybrid graphics)

2011-05-19 Thread Ap. Syvertsen
I have a Dell Aspire Timeline X 4820TG with Radeon HD5650 and integrated
intel graphics.

This bug used to bugger me about every second boot, but after installing
tons of different kernels it's actually been more sporadic. I don't know
whether that is because I spend more time in the GRUB-menu, clicking to
Previous versions and then choosing 2.6.38-8.

Anyways, I added the drm.debug=0x0e for all kernels and kept booting
till I got some good and bad boots. Chronologically I had 1 good, 3 bad
and 1 good boot, but in the attached kern.log it only shows 1 good, 1
bad, 1 good. In all the bad boots it stopped with a completely black
screen (no backlight) but I was able to switch xserver (or something) by
pressing Alt+F1, Alt+F2 and Alt+F7. The system did not respond to Ctrl-
Alt-Del but printed some SAK line when pressing AltGr+SysRq+K without
doing anything.

The last line in one terminal on all bad boots was this:
[drm:intel_prepare_page_flip], preparing flip with no unpin work?

The last thing in the other terminal was the call trace ending with this:
[ 27.218815] RIP [a0569b16] evergreen_cp_start+0x56/0xc80 [radeon]

Hope this helps, let me know if you need more info.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 713864] Re: Black screen with nouveau on a GeForce 8600M GT, either LiveCD or fresh install

2011-05-19 Thread Gabe Gorelick
I can confirm this on natty with 2.6.38-8-generic-pae (Dell XPS M1530,
GeFore 8600M GT). The proprietary driver works fine. Incidentally this
made the upgrade process from maverick to natty very difficult, as for
some reason it tried to enable nouveau even though I had the proprietary
drivers installed.

These patches are vast, that makes them a trick proposition for us to

they are being discussed for inclusion in mainline yet?

Yes, same here.

Although I wrote it is fixed for me, I had experienced one login when
icon theme was set wrong ... and the login took several times longer
than usually.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 785088] [NEW] remote eclipse crashes local xorg while running java program

2011-05-19 Thread Jan Grobecker
Public bug reported:

I'm running a remote eclipse 3.3.2 via nomachine's nx-client and nx-
server on a dual-head ubuntu natty (remote: ubuntu hardy). With xserver-
xorg-video-intel I can reproduce a crash when starting a certain java
application from the workspace. This doesn't happen neither when I start
it via webstart from firefox nor when I'm using xserver-xorg-video-vesa
(with low resolution and single monitor only) instead.

I also have this problem using the VirtualBox video driver (Ubuntu guest
machine.) The title bars are frozen somehow. No prelight/hover effect on
the buttons in gtk-window-decorator or emerald. If I disable compiz I
can get a hover effect in metacity.

Can't seem to find any pattern. Display randomly crashes and restarts
with login screen. I have found that it seems to crash less often with
the 2.6.35 kernel and so far it hasn't crashed at all if I use Ubuntu-
classic session with the 2.6.35 kernel. Using 2.6.38 kernel it crashes
whether I use Unity or Ubuntu-Classic, but Unity seems to crash more
  quickly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 764700] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in utouch_frame_sync()

2011-05-19 Thread Timo Kluck
Hi Chase,

Thanks for taking a look. I still have occasional X crashes ( every 3 -
4 days) with the utouch and utouch-unstable repositories enabled (in
particular, I am using the wacom-dkms module from unstable, and I
uninstalled xserver-xorg-input-wacom). I have no way of telling whether
these are all this same bug, especially since the bug reporting tool
usually doesn't catch it.

If you can point me to some info about what to do next time a crash
occurs, so that I can get some information you can work with, please let
me know.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507305] Re: Unable to slow mouse sufficiently

2011-05-19 Thread octavio bernal quiroz
Hi, just to let you know, finally I resolve slow mouse problem, this
solution applies in Kubuntu 10.04 LTS version 32 and 64 bits, also
applies to ubuntu 10.04 and 11.04.

For my Dell computer: Dell Inspiron 15 (C15P32_225LCO), AMD Athlon II
Dual-Core Mobile P340 (2.2 GHz), Mem 2GB DDR3, 250GB HD. video ATI
Mobility Radeon HD4250. You just need to download from ATI web site the
latest drivers. selecting the drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon HD4250 you
will get a .sh file ati-...sh, to avoid problems you can reboot
your computer and enter as ubuntu (failsafe) then enter as a root to the
console, and run the .sh file. Reboot your computer and you will get the
mouse working correctly and video working smoothly

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 681904] Re: [arrandale] Samsung QX310/QX410/QX510/SF310/SF410/SF510/NF210/RF410/RF510/RF710 trackpad/touchpad not recognized

2011-05-19 Thread Daniel Manrique
Hi Andy,

The patch appears to still be quite experimental, that may be why it
hasn't been proposed for integration upstream. Neither the bug
discussion on kernel.org nor the mailing list for the involved kernel
subsystem (see here: http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-input/) seem to
have anything definite about this, so there seems to be no public
discussion to that effect.

Maybe some of the people involved (Tom Lin, for instance, the author of
the original patch) could be discussing this privately, but if so,
there's no indication to it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780648] Re: Fail to repaint screen when external monitor attached while sleeping

2011-05-19 Thread Lightnin
Done some more looking into this. Turns out it only happens when:
System is booted without external monitor connected, then made to sleep,
connected to external monitor while sleeping, then woken.

If the system is originally booted while connected to the external
monitor, then it can be connected to an external monitor while sleeping,
and this problem will not occur.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 752157] Re: [RS880] graphical corruption in launcher (Solid grey rectangles over icon text and window borders)

2011-05-19 Thread Schmankerl
Same on ATI Mobility HD3650 with open source radeon driver. White
stripes appears sometimes near the ubuntu lauchner icon and other
icons... and sometimes the complete top panel is nearly white instead of
dark gray (black). In a few cases my unity did not start up and I had to
shutdown via power button. I don`t want to use fglrx driver :-(

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727620] Re: [Radeon HD 5650 and 5470] Kernel BUG during recovery boot and in normal boot (Hybrid graphics)

2011-05-19 Thread Zentai Andras
Dear All,

I experienced the same problem with an other switchable graphics configuration:
ATI Radeon HD 3650 discrete and some Intel card. (Lenovo Thinkpad T500)

Boot hangs and I got the same error message, just the pci id was different:
udevd-work[86]: '/sbin/modprobe -bv unexpected exit with status 0x0009

Disabling the switchable graphics option in BIOS resulted good boot
either using Radeor or Intel video cards.

I suggest to include the HD 3650 model to the topic of the bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 368518] [GM45, 945] Unable to mirror to external monitor

2011-05-19 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or
feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an
issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May
you please test with that version and comment back if you're still
having or not the issue? Please have a look at
http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that
version.Thanks in advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 556782] Re: [rs690m] Graphics corruption with ati x1200

2011-05-19 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, looks like this bug has stalled.

First thing, for those looking for workarounds, you should be able to
install the classic (non-gallium) driver and still use the disable-KMS
workaround to get back to working 3D. If you haven't located the
classic drivers, look in /usr/lib/dri-alternates. You can use the
environment variable to set the path, ala:

 LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/lib/dri-alternates glxgears-info

If that works, you can set that option globally. You guys may need to
experiment a bit to get an optimal workaround.

Sometimes I'm tempted to just shout Help, help!, but I know it's just more
noise. ..if *anyone* knows who to mail that:
1) can move this bug along, and
2) whom it wouldn't be rude to email about this, and
3) preferably actually *wants* to see this fixed,
please let me know!

Here is a course of action I'd suggest. I agree it's unfortunate the
upstream bug report got closed without actually being fixed. Part of
the trouble is I think this bug report is a bit creakily old and has
conglomerated a few different issues which perhaps makes the issue
unclear to the developers. So, I would first suggest breaking out a
separate bug report from this one, and keep it discrete to a specific,
reproducible problem; be very clear in your description, include a
reference to this bug report, and identify specific error messages,
screenshots, and so on that clearly define the problem. Here's a good
way to start filing it:

 $ ubuntu-bug mesa

(In the dialog that pops up, pick the yes, I was directed here
option.)

Next, it looks to me like upstream wants this tested against current git
versions of things; they don't put much priority on issues reported
against released versions in distros typically. Fortunately we provide
packaged versions of all the upstream stuff you need to test. Here's
the links you need:

  * xorg-edgers:  https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa  -
this will give git versions of mesa, -ati, etc.

  * http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ - includes drm-next
and .39 backports to natty

For this bug I doubt you need to install and test a newer kernel, I
think the newer mesa is the more important thing to test. However, many
of these kinds of bugs do depend on stuff in the kernel, so if the new
mesa doesn't resolve the issue it would be wise to also test either the
drm-next kernel or a .39 kernel (like v2.6.39-rc4-natty). For mesa,
make sure to only use natty builds. For the kernel, either the oneiric
or natty kernels should work on natty, but the natty builds are more
likely to work properly. You may need to experiment a bit. Take good
notes.

In the case that you *do* find that the newer git builds work properly,
upstream will consider the issue solved, so no use bothering them
further. However, if you think the issue still should be fixed in
natty, there's some additional testing work to do. You can use a git
bisection procedure to narrow in on what patch fixed it. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection or
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/BisectingMesa or
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bisecting as appropriate.

In the case that you *don't* find any success from the newer git builds,
then upstream should care. Forward the bug upstream to
bugs.freedesktop.org and file it against mesa (DRI/radeon). Then link
it to your ubuntu bug report to the upstream bug via the Also affects
project link. Upstream may give patches or request testing other
options or things; if you have the bug linked, we can keep an eye out
for you and give you a helping hand with package builds or whatnot if we
have time.

Anyway, hope this helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727620] Re: [Radeon HD 5650 and 5470] Kernel BUG during recovery boot and in normal boot (Hybrid graphics)

2011-05-19 Thread Jean Demange
Hey,
After seven failed boots, I've managed to have a good boot : during this good
boot, the disk checking had started.
When the boot was unsuccessful unsuccessful, I couldn't access to a tty but the
magic keys worked.

I attach the the success part of the kern.log, followed by the bad part
and I attach too the entire kern.log because I'm not really sure of my
cuts.

The option “drm.debug=0x0e” was activated.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 785280] [NEW] Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a42] transparency problem on ltsp

2011-05-19 Thread Marc Gariépy

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a42]
transparency problem on ltsp in natty

When using LTSP the transparency doesn't work.

the easiest way to reproduce the bug is using the edubuntu live and
starting the ltsp server. see the following link for more info:
http://edubuntu.org/documentation/ltsp-live and boot a laptop or a thin
client with the same graphic card.

when using xorg-edgers driver the problem is still present but then
isntalling the pacakge from maverick it's working

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 785308] [NEW] Crash while working within Unity or Mumble

Not sure if Unity/Compiz is pushing the driver to its limits or whether Mumble

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 772207] Re: version 173.14.30 is buggy for GeForce FX 5200

2011-05-19 Thread Paulo
The reason that Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 will not work on Unity is because it's
blacklisted by nux-tools, wich verifies if your graphics card is supported. All
Nvidia FX models are blacklisted and some other Nvidia models too. To see if
your graphics card is blacklisted just run in a Terminal window:
$ /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p
The output will be something like this
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce FX 5200/AGP/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 2.1.2 NVIDIA 173.14.30

Not software rendered:yes
Not blacklisted: no
GLX fbconfig: yes
GLX texture from pixmap: yes
GL npot or rect textures: yes
GL vertex program:yes
GL fragment program: yes
GL vertex buffer object: yes
GL framebuffer object:yes
GL version is 1.4+: yes

Unity supported: no

I've commented out the section that blacklist FX cards and recompiled nux-tools
and managed to load Unity. But the icons on Dash are invisible, thats why the
FX cards were blacklisted, I think.
The problem is the unity_support_test also prevents that Compiz works in the
Classic mode. Long history short, the blacklist should prevent only the not
supported cards to load Unity, not Compiz.
By the way, even removing the restriction to load Compiz, Jockey still reports
that the nvidia-173 driver is not in use.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 757475] Re: Xorg freeze

2011-05-19 Thread Subramanian S
Hi,
I am running Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop, Inspiron 1525.
I also face this problem while in Linux. I did not have this problem in 10.04
or 10.10 releases.

In my case, I have enabled the screensaver, and have also asked it to
lock the screen if idle for 5 min.

When I return back after sometime, the screensaver would have frozen, but my
Keyboard and Mouse would still work.
I will then move the mouse to find where the password field is, and enter the
password to unlock the screen and press enter (Actually I cannot see anything
but the frozen screensaver).
I assume the desktop has come, I press the power button (I have assigned it the
shutdown dialog) and press Alt+S.
Only once has it shutdown this way. Other times I have powered it off.

Is there a program that I can run in background that can record a log so that I
can submit that here?
I cannot manually run anything after the display is frozen, as I cannot see
anything but the frozen screensaver.

Thank you.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-05-19 Thread paercebal
I guess Hurry up! comments won't help.

If there are only a handful of people in the world suffering from this
bug, I guess its priority will remain low, no matter how much we will
complain (or cry... or break furniture...). I guess there must be some
way to pay canonical for the support of the nvidia-96 driver, but this
problem happened twice in a row, meaning it is quite probable the next
version will have the same issue *again*: Won't our money better spent
by buying a supported nvidia or ATI (or whatever) board?

Still, I would like some questions answered by the maintainers (or
whatever people are handling this case) :

 - 1. Will the nvidia-96 issue be corrected for the current version
 - 2. Is there a way to upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 while still keeping the 10.10
X.Org/nvidia-96/whatever?
 - 3. Is the nvidia-96 driver considered obsolete, which would mean the
middle/long term solution would be to upgrade our graphic card ? (suggestions
are welcome)
 - 4. Is it possible to enhance the Ubuntu Upgrade process to tell the user
about drivers obsolescence ? (being surprised by having one's system break down
after the upgrade is NOT cool).

Thanks,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 776772] Re: Fatal Error: No screens found in xorg.o.log

2011-05-19 Thread Eric Hu
@cjcolella One solution I've seen is to select Ubuntu Classic at login.
You won't be using Unity anymore, but it *should* fix the crashes. I
haven't tested it myself since I'd like to gather some more data on this
bug and hopefully see it fixed.

I agree with you though that it makes 11.04 unstable. Sticking with
this easily takes 20 minutes out of the beginning of my workday as I
wait to crash the system.

Do you see the network issues 100% of the time with your crashes? I
would estimate that only about 10% of my crashes result in network
issues. I've had a 100% 1-crash-per-boot rate since I upgraded to
11.04, though.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 785370] [NEW] nvidia-settings won't save configuration

2011-05-19 Thread GDR!
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

I'm running nvidia-settings via sudo, so it has the permissions to save
the file.

When I click Save to X Configuration File, a popup saying Failed to
parse existing X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'! appears. At the same
time, the following error appears in console:

VALIDATION ERROR: Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Device section Default Device must have a Driver line.

When I click OK in the dialog box, it gives me an option to save anyway.
Also, it's worth noting that Apply button does it job and applies
changes.

The problem started after upgrade to Natty. I'm running Kubuntu x64.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 696232] Re: Incomplete support for Apple Aluminium Keyboard

2011-05-19 Thread Damien Ciabrini
Hi Joss,

I'm running Maverick with package xkb-data from Natty (2.1-1ubuntu3) as you.
I can run the keyboard without apparent troubles. xprop gives the following XKB
settings:

_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = evdev, applealu_iso, us, ,
apple:alupckeys,lv3:ralt_switch
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = evdev, applealu_iso, us, ,
apple:alupckeys,lv3:ralt_switch

Maybe your troubles come from the fact that you specified a variant
mac for the gb kayout. Could you try to remove it? It seems it
doesn't come from GNOME, so maybe it's in your /etc/default/console-
setup. Change it with:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup

If things still don't work, could you please attach the result of:

setxkbmap -print | xkbcomp -xkb - -

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 785420] [NEW] 11.04 After Login desktop mouse continues to clock.......The Desktop never displays

2011-05-19 Thread Stephen Burrows
Public bug reported:

Recently, updated to 11.04. Yesterday I booted the system and found that
after I login my Desktop does not come up.. The mouse indicator just
continues to spins. I have observed if I wait about 5 minutes my
screensaver will kick in. My setting is for 5 minutes. Once I cancel the
screensaver Iḿ back to the mouse indicator circling continuosly. At that
point all I am able to do is restart and try again. None of the keyboard
shortcuts seem to work when that situation exist.

Your help is appeciated.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 765223] Re: Pavilion dv4-1313dx touchpad does not work after login

2011-05-19 Thread Eric Moyer
I wiped everything and tried straight Debian Squeeze. The touchpad
works in the live-cd but not once you have installed it.

I then tried Xubuntu 11.04 (though my sound-card stopped working, that
is much less important to me). So the touchpad works under Xubuntu but
not under Gnome-Ubuntu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 754799] Re: [arrandale] external VGA output doesn't output anything (i686)

2011-05-19 Thread Joachim R.
I experiences a different bug that may be linked to this one : when I plug my
TV on external VGA display, gnome monitors settings shows only 640x480,
800x600, 1024x768 as possible dimensions for my TV.
It is a regression, because under Maverick, I can set 1366x768 and other 16/9
dimensions. A workaround is using xrandr commands to force a new mode.

Does this interrest you ?
