[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 776978] Re: everything on screen is garbled apart from the top bar (2 monitors, different resolutions, unity, natty)

2011-11-09 Thread René Vangsgaard
This problem is gone for me in oneiric, so I will unsubscribe. On
another note, I do have a problem when undocking with a locked screen,
the unlock dialog do not appear... but that is not relevant here.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 868516] Re: Lightdm presents a black, blank screen, unable to login in graphicly

2011-11-09 Thread AndreK
the bug remained for several days. - not sure if it got fixed till release
(don't think so)
In the end - reinstalling nvidia-common fixed it.
(sudo apt-get --reinstall install nvidia-common.)

- it's gone now, I I did't see any similar problem

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 887445] Re: I can not login

2011-11-09 Thread Gunnar
This seems to be the same problem as bug 532047.
So the problem is not really fixed?

I've done:
sudo mv /etc/init/plymouth-splash.conf /etc/init/plymouth-splash.conf.disabled

and added the line vt=7 to /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf as below.

[SeatDefaults]
greeter-session=unity-greeter
user-session=ubuntu
vt=7

The login now crashes when I press 2 (ENTER seems to crash it only some of the
times ) but ENTER crashes it if I open a terminal window in X and press ENTER
in that.
Pressing 2 after login also crashes X.

2011-11-09 Thread Anders Frisk
Can confirm that this bug is NOT present in 11.10 oneiric LiveCD.

I figured out some way to work around the original bug in Natty LiveCD,
involving turning off TV out interface and configure monitor via cli.
Unfortunately I didn't document the exact process.

2011-11-09 Thread Ghislain Bugnicourt
Hi,
I already changed the title of this bug : same problem with Oneiric, except
that Unity 3D works, but still with the vesa driver and not with intel,
resulting in poor video settings (bad ratio aspect, unknown screen, desktop
spreading out of the screen).
I'm still forced to use ubuntu 10.04.

Hi Bryce. I upgraded to Oneiric as soon as beta was released. It still
happens, but is extremely rare. However, when it does happen I have no
recourse but to force logout, resulting in data loss. It may have
happened two times since I upgraded to Oneiric beta. I have not
performed a clean install yet.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 767159] Re: udevadm trigger --action=change crashes X.Org Server

2011-11-09 Thread Michael Thayer
Just tested again. I no longer see this on bare metal (I think I did
before, but it was so long ago...) I do see it in VirtualBox (Oneiric
VM) with and without Guest Additions installed. I will take fifteen
minutes to see if I can debug it.

2011-11-09 Thread Peter T.
Hello Bryce,

Yes, I still experiencing this problem.
I also tried to load livecd of final 11.10, thinking may be it's because of
upgrade from Natty.
But it also doesn't work.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 838577] Re: GNOME Shell display problems with FGLRX

2011-11-09 Thread Daniel Mohr
I agree with David Lopez:

For me, the problem also persists when installing fonts-cantarell.
Mostly, drop-down menus and tooltips are totally corrupted. Scrolling is
worse than with the open driver. But 3D effects are far smoother. From
time to time the screen flickers completely. Overall, gnome-shell is
unusable.

Also using Ubuntu 11.10 64bit and and fglrx 2:8.881-0ubuntu4.1. I tried
the newest driver from the ATI website (11.10) and it doesn't fix the
problem. Additionally, there are module loading problems with this
version. But I think, this should be another bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 836514] Re: Big files stored on the Desktop slow down Desktop appearance after login

2011-11-09 Thread Simone Bordet
Bryce,

as I said in the second comment, please close this bug (I can't find any
way to close it myself).

The slowdown was caused by Zeitgeist, but it seems that this behavior is
much improved in Oneiric (although not completely gone yet), so for now
I am ok to wait a few seconds after logging in for the Desktop to
appear.

Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 782855] Re: missing pixels (horizontal lines) in font rendering

2011-11-09 Thread rix
In the meanwhile I've changed my laptop so I'm afraid I won't be of much
help on this. I imagine this kind of bugs are pretty complex to spot but
unfortunately push people moving to different OS's, at least for laptops
(I've moved to OS X myself, even if I'm still fully-Ubuntu on the
desktop). This is just a note and not a criticism on your great job,
guys!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 779453] Re: Display port color problem

2011-11-09 Thread Pimmetje
Thanks for the replay,

I already upgraded to 11.10. One thing i know for sure is that it is not
a hardware issue. Because the first time it worked. After a reboot i had
again the old issue. A few days ago i had also one boot that worked like
it should be i am unable to reproduce the working situation.

I sadly have no experience in debugging this kind of issues. But i have
basic unix knowhow (shell mainly).

I have to feeling that something is crashing (gui wise) at startup
because it takes 5 - 10 seconds longer to get the login screen as it
does when i do not have the external screens connected.

In any case thank u all for our time in making ubuntu better :)
If there is any way i can assist please let me know.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 449208] Re: touchpad tap-to-click response delayed .5 seconds

2011-11-09 Thread nfsd
If you're using a synaptics touchpad, I actually worked around this by
adjusting the completely insane default settings that X is set up with.
Here's the config I run when I log into a new X session:

syn RightEdge 911
syn BottomEdge 670
syn MaxTapTime 250
syn BMaxTapMove 10
syn SingleTapTimeout 300
syn ClickTime 100
syn MaxDoubleTapTime 500
syn HorizEdgeScroll 0
syn SHMConfig true
syn AccelFactor .5
syn MinSpeed 0.8
syn MaxSpeed 0.8
syn ScrollButtonRepeat 50

This gives me right-side scrolling, a very responsive click, somewhat
sensitive touchpad movement, and a lower acceleration factor than I
recall X coming with. All in all it cleaned up the absolutely atrocious
default synaptic behavior into something that's somewhat liveable.
Please try this if you have a synaptics touchpad and see if it cures
your click woes.

If it does, please post that it does, and perhaps we can entice the
troll under the linux synaptics bridge to change the defaults.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 449208] Re: touchpad tap-to-click response delayed .5 seconds

2011-11-09 Thread nfsd
Oh, yeah, and I use zsh, and this is the definition for syn:

Feel free to adjust it for what you want. It's more a function to clean
up the CLI behavior of the synaptics utility by being able to blow off
all the mixed capitalization (POOR FORM, GUY) in the variable names, and
search for names if you don't know the exact right thing. I got tired
of typing | fgrep whatever.

syn () {
local -a argArray
local blob
blob=$(synclient -l)
[ -n $1 ] || {
echo $blob
return
}
while [ $argv[1] ]
do
argArray[1]=$argv[1]
argArray[2]=$argv[2]
argv[1]=()
if [ ! $argArray[2] ]
then
echo $blob | fgrep -i $argArray[1]
else
argv[1]=()
argArray[1]=$(echo $blob | grep -iP
\s${argArray[1]}\s \
| awk '{print $1}')

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 847928] Re: Xephyr in fullscreen mode uses :0 always

2011-11-09 Thread Miklos Espak
Hi Bryce,

thank you for dealing with this.

Meanwhile I upgraded to oneiric. The behaviour is different now.

The fullscreen mode works, but it completely discards the specified display
number. The remote desktop appears on the same display from which I started
Xephyr. If I press Ctrl-Alt then I can switch between the local windows by
Alt-Tab. That is fine.

So it is usable now, since it does not move the local desktop to another
display.

It would be nice, however, to put the remote desktop to the display that is
specified by the :display argument. But it is not much important. Or, if
this is the intended behaviour then it could be enough to document it in
the manual page.

I used this command:

$ Xephyr :3 -fullscreen -query miles

Best,
Miklos

 Hey espakm,

You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric
is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade
and re-test if this issue is still present there.

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
 close it.)

If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.

2011-11-09 Thread Guy Taylor
This 'freeze' has not been seen recently.

Currently running: Linux version 3.0.0-14-generic (buildd@seaborgium)
(gcc version 4.6.1 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.1-9ubuntu3) )
#22~pre20070400-Ubuntu SMP Mon Nov 7 09:42:48 UTC 2011 so ether the
bug has been fixed in the later kernel or its was a sporadic hardware
bug.

I am happy for the bug to be closed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 838577] Re: GNOME Shell display problems with FGLRX

2011-11-09 Thread axeoth
Sorry for being confrontational, but I found the proposal to close down
the bug report a bit unbearable. Besides the original poster there are
many others which are confronted with this problem, as the thread shows
it. The idea is not to close the bug reports (maybe a wonder happened
and now there is no longer the need to work on it), but to solve those
bug reports. If wonders are expected, migrating to another
distribution may be one... Oneiric has many problems per sé, dismissing
its users is the worst choice, as they are already quite dissapointed.

Danach musst du deinen Rechner bitte neu starten (bitte sei etwas

Linuxhelfer

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 887993] [NEW] desktop sluggish after resume from suspend

2011-11-09 Thread Pavel Rojtberg
Public bug reported:

after resuming from suspend unity/ compiz feels like it renders much less
frames per second. Moving windows around is very jerky as are the animations of
the sidebar.
While moving around a window the Xorg CPU utilization spikes to 48%, so its
eating up one of my 2 cores.

logging out and logging in again solves the problem. Switching to VTs
however does not.

furthermore I got this on my kernel log:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 767159] Re: udevadm trigger --action=change crashes X.Org Server

2011-11-09 Thread Michael Thayer
My first instinct would be to try the following patch. Looking at the
server source code I don't think that read_input will be called in a
loop if it returns without doing anything, and I would assume that the
server will get notification from udev on a separate path to trigger
device removal even if this path is not taken. I would definitely ask
on xorg-devel first though.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 726033] Re: does not display icons until hovered

2011-11-09 Thread Pavel Rojtberg
this bug was worked around in nux for natty already. As far as I recall the
problem was that mesa or better the gallium drivers did not respect a glScissor
of 0x0px size(dont paint at all) so it was increased to 1x1px.
So basically it is fixed for unity, but I dont know wheter glScissor is fixed
in mesa..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 858916] Re: [nouveau?] Graphic card 108°C in Ubuntu 11.10

2011-11-09 Thread RobinJ
The computer still gets rather hot (and really hot when forcing Unity on), but
it's not a 110°C anymore.
Now the hottest it gets (using Unity 2D) is around 90 to 100°C.

My personal opinion is that it would be best to get to the source of
this heat production, as I've had this problem on another computer as
well running Ubuntu 11.10. The final decision is up to you of course.
Only thing I can say is that I'm not going to risk this again, so I've
switched to another distro for the time being, until this issue gets a
permanent fix.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 887933] [NEW] KDE taskbar (the bottom panel) doesn't respond occasionally

2011-11-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After upgrade from Kubuntu 11.04 to 11.10 the bottom panel started to
freeze every now and then. It stops working for about 1 or 2 minutes.
During this time I can't switch windows (but ALT+TAB works), can't
switch workspaces (but CTRL+F1 - F4 works), I'm unable to start the
launcher (but ALT+F2 works) or the calendar or anything else. The whole
bottom panel is out of order for some time. After a while it works again
and I can see that all previous clicks are quickly processed.

The problem repeats several times a day but I haven't found any
regularity or a reason why it happens.

I upgraded KDE to 4.7.3 from ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa, but it didn't help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 776322] Re: Switch to dual monitor causes second screen to show garbage.

2011-11-09 Thread rew
Hi Bryce,

I switched to Oneiric on two of my systems. I have not seen the bug. But
then again I don't think I booted into the live CD mode of the DVD.

It seems to be my home system that I reported this on.

On both systems I had trouble getting the system to run in dual screen
mode. On one system I had to go and hack configuration files to get the
dual screen mode to stay. (I must confess that I use an old window
manager (sawfish) as that is able to do some things (that I use!) that
modern window managers cannot. )

The system that this happened on has already been upgraded. I'll see if
I can boot into a live CD later on.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 816899] Re: X crashes with segmentation fault

2011-11-09 Thread Chris Thompson
Thanks for the comment. I have not experienced this particular failure
mode for some time now (but then again I have not been using LibreOffice
intensively recently). So it may have been incidentally fixed as a
result of a natty upgrade.

Given that I can upgrade to oneiric, and that it probably has been fixed
in natty, I think it reasonable that it should be closed (so, at least,
you have one less bug to worry about).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 820918] Re: The screen gets garbled after a few hours of use

2011-11-09 Thread Mynk
In post #3 I mentioned I was on 11.10 beta. Now I am synced to the
latest on Oneiric (11.10) and I still see the issue. I notice that the
problem shows up earlier on a resource intensive desktop. I have now
moved to stumpwm and I am finding the problem show much slower. But the
problem is not gone.

I wish I could provide more useful info to crack the problem. But do
keep the bug open - hoping to see it closed sometime! :)

thx,

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 771788] Re: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk

2011-11-09 Thread Linuxexperte
hi Alessandro,

you can install it via your own system and then it will be in the language
of your system. This is controlled through the control-center
of your own system. You don't need to download it from the internet!!!

Just use your control-center in Ubuntu or in your derivate, if you use
another Ubuntu-derivate.
So you have it easy, to install this driver.

Or if it doesn't work via your control-center, then just open your
synaptic, search for these packages:

nvidia-current

nvidia-settings

Install them, close synaptic and restart your machine, that's just it.

Greetings
Linuxexperte

 Hey t-papillard,

Hi Brice,
Thank's to had a look on my pb :

I've installed oneiric version, and this bug is now by passed : when i
try to use my aditional screen on full resolution : ubuntu oneiric
displays a warning. When i translate the french message it in english
thats looks like this :
You can't use this resolution because it is over the square of
2048*2048 allowed : please take a lower resolution or restart un 2D mode
After restarting my oneiric unity in 2d mode, i'm able to select full
resolution on aditional screen (1280*1024).

In conclusion, it work's fine now and as i haven't my natty version
installed anymore, i think you should close this bug if you have some
tasks more usefull to do.

Thank's again.

Alex

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 784523] Re: [i915] 'flashing screen' after update to natty

2011-11-09 Thread Moriz
After updating the system to oneiric, the problem still exists -- flickering on
the netbook display, but not on external display, but changed:
-- the flickering wouldn't occure anymore spontaneously;
-- the flickering occures, when I click on Display in the System Settings
(behaviour similar as described for Bug #775088, worse than described for Bug
#844235) or when I use the encrease/decrease brightness keys of the keyboard
-- I can't stop the flickering anymore (neither through right-click, Alt+Tab or
Alt+Ctrl+Del nor through the Win-key [as described in Bug #844235 comment #5],
Alt+Ctrl+F2 Alt+Ctrl+F7 [as described in Bug #775088 -- at least this has a
little effect, the flashing is pausing or slowing down for a second])

In /etc/default/grub, I added acpi_backlight=vendor to the
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT parameters as described in comment #45 of Bug
#810093, this didn't change anything.

Using the samsung-backlight package from
https://launchpad.net/~voria/+archive/ppa as described in comment #26 of
Bug #810093 helped: no flickering anymore, I can use System Settings
Display as well as the brightness keys to change backlight brightness
just as I like. Thanks to Voria.
