[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 575660] Re: Mali layout selects Malayalam layout

2012-02-22 Thread reg
Bryce,

The issue is not on Mali, the issue is on Malayalam which breaks Mali.

From a user's standpoint, after installing oneiric, if you choose any
Mali (country) or Bambara (language) layout, you will get Malayalam
(language). It is easy to distinguish as Malayalam uses a non-latin
script.

The causes I've identified in the past were a conflict of codes and filenames:
Mali (country) has an ISO3166-1 code of ML
XKB convention is that layouts are stored in per-country files named after the
ISO3166-1 code (thus ml)
Malayalam (language) has an ISO 639-1 code of ML

According to upstream the problem is not with the ml layout (to fix the
problem locally, I rename ml to mali and change its name in evdev.xml)

Looking at evdev.xml in oneiric, I am not sure how to resolve the
problem as Malayalam no longer makes reference to ML but only to MAL. I
imagine the problem still lies in code conversion but I can't check as
freedesktop website is down for me at the moment.

--
Mali country codes:
ISO 3166-1 Alpha-3MLI
ISO 3166-1 Alpha-2ML
Malayalam language codes:
ISO 639-1 ml
ISO 639-2 mal
ISO 639-3 mal
Bambara language codes:
ISO 639-1 bm
ISO 639-2 bam
ISO 639-3 bam

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 927918] Re: Frequency scaling causes whole-system micro-freezes / Lags / stutters with AMD Zambezi (Bulldozer) CPU

2012-02-22 Thread Shahar Or
Dear Bryce, Joseph,

It looks quite similar with all of the types of sessions. I've tried
both Gnome Classic (No Effects), as you requested and Gnome Classic.

I'm not sure what we're meant to test here, though.

I'll try with the latest upstream kernel as you requested, Joseph.

to /etc/rc.local . This will make all cores run at maximum rate, causing more
power consumption. Note that I have four cpu's. You might have 6 or 8 if this
occurs with other FX series processors.

  echo performance /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
  echo performance /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/scaling_governor
  echo performance /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu2/cpufreq/scaling_governor
  echo performance /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu3/cpufreq/scaling_governor

Testing with a dedicated PCI Express GPU (Radeon R300 if I remember

Here's some testing with different governors:
  performance: smoothness goodness
ondemand: the stuttering as demonstrated in the video

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 416421]

2012-02-22 Thread Simon Schubert
Created attachment 57155
reorder Bresenham error correction to avoid overshoot.

When fbBresSolid draws a line, it can happen that after the last
pixel, the Bresenham error term overflows, and fbBresSolid paints
another pixel before adjusting the error term.

However, if this happens on the last pixel (len=0), this extra pixel
might overshoot the boundary, and, in rare cases, lead to a segfault.

Fix this issue by adjusting for the Bresenham error term before
drawing the main pixel, not after.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 935630] Re: White rectangular

2012-02-22 Thread Denver Gingerich
Here's what I mentioned to Bryce about this issue in a comment on bug
#933778 (a likely unrelated bug):

I also noticed (and this is probably the topic for a new bug report),
that a particular operation in Chromium caused a new window to appear,
which is completely white, always on top, not associated with any
application, and difficult/impossible to close. I noticed that after
this happened, compiz is now consistently using exactly 24% of my CPU
according to top. The particular operation seemed to involve having the
autocomplete dropdown activated while also doing Ctrl+N, though I can't
remember exactly what combination of things were going on at that time.
I'll provide more details if it happens again, but the window is still
there if there's some diagnostics I can run to see what it is.

Since that was written, I no longer see compiz using 24% CPU; it has
fallen back to normal levels (about 2-5%).

Note that though this white window is always on top, it is not
clickable; any mouse operations affect the window behind it (for
example, I can select text in a browser window that is behind it and the
cursor changes to the text select cursor when I hover over text in a
window behind the white window).

As you can see, I was able to take screenshots of this issue. It seems
that the white window is tied to all workspaces, but not to the X
display itself (since showing the workspace switcher moves the white
window onto each of the displayed workspaces; it does not keep the white
window on top of the workspace switcher itself).

If you need any more info about this issue while it is still present,
please let me know soon. I plan to logout and log back in by the end of
today as it's impeding my workspace. The bug does not seem easy to
reproduce; I haven't seen a new white window since I managed to create
one yesterday. The steps for reproducing in the quoted section above
are the best I have.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 935630] Re: White rectangular

2012-02-22 Thread Denver Gingerich
As a follow-up to my original summary of this issue, I noticed also that
the white window appears in the lock screen as well. So it obscures the
password entry box if that box decides to show up on the monitor where
the white window is. Also, once the login screen times out (ie. goes
back to a black screen), the white window remains on the screen, overtop
of the otherwise black screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 933710] Re: Laptops with eDP panels do not suspend when lid closed

2012-02-22 Thread Seth Forshee
Upon further inquiry I've found out that the ConnectorType property that
gnome_rr_output_is_laptop() just isn't implemented for most of the video
drivers in X, and it isn't likely to be fixed in the near future.

So for precise something along the lines of the patch I've attached is
going to be required. Federico Mena-Quintero commented on the upstream
bug report that the patch makes sense. Is that enough to move forward
with it? This really ought to be fixed for precise, or else the code in
g-s-d that using this function to leave the machine running when the lid
is closed ought to be removed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 938746] [NEW] Double-tap to drag requires an extra tap to stop dragging

2012-02-22 Thread Christopher Kyle Horton
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 934770 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/934770

Public bug reported:

For me, this is a very annoying regression that has occurred in Precise
in comparison to 11.10.

Whenever I double-click to drag something on my laptop, such as
moving/resizing windows, the dragging continues until I give an extra
tap to stop it, instead of when I take my finger off the trackpad. As
such, it is easy to forget to make this extra tap, leading to unintended
interactions, and it also impedes my workflow.

This behavior is also inconsistent with my physical trackpad buttons,
which stop dragging once released.

Even worse, spin boxes / other UI elements that let you normally hold
down a mouse button for continued effect and stop once released don't
stop until this extra tap is done. This results in a significant loss of
precision, since in many of these cases the continuation of the effect
occurs too quickly with relation to the extra time needed to register an
extra tap.

2012-02-22 Thread Pat McGowan
synclient LockedDrags=0 restores the previous behavior but this of
course resets each boot. Previous behavior being the selection ends when
the finger is raised.

I do not see selections start in a single tap when LockedDrags is
enabled. A double tap is required to begin, and a single tap or timeout
to release.

Sorry I was thinking to a something much more little: I want to know if with
the bug in action, as Bryce suggest, pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2 ( to enter in tty
mode) this window disappear and you have a black screen like the terminal.
Press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to restore it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 935630] Re: White rectangular

2012-02-22 Thread Bryce Harrington
Interesting, thanks for the pictures Denver. So, this is starting to
look much like a compositing issue of some sort. Let's check a couple
things to be sure:

First, try logging in to Unity2D and see if you can reproduce it there.
If so, then also try Gnome Classic (No Effects) - install the 'gnome-
panel' package and that should add this option to your login session.

If you find it only occurs in Unity, then it may be a mesa issue. I
have a PPA with a mesa update we're currently testing, which fixes some
random bugs on -intel. I suspect it won't fix this bug, but it's
probably worth testing. Please install this PPA and see if it makes any
difference: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/mesa-8.0.1/

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 934770] Re: Trackpad behavior change causes tap-and-drag to lock

2012-02-22 Thread Christopher Kyle Horton
I should probably also note that, at least on my laptop, dragging things
isn't the only activity adversely affected by this. Trying to hold down
spinbox buttons, for example, causes them to continue to
increase/decrease at a high rate until an extra tap is used to stop it,
which is slower than just releasing the trackpad. So at least in the
case of spinboxes, this change makes them much more difficult to use
when trying to quickly spin up/down to a certain value, especially at
times when the extra needed click occasionally doesn't register and you
end up rocketing all the way to the maximum/minimum allowed value.

Hi Bryce,

I can't reproduce this bug reliably at all so I'd prefer to try things
with the existing white window that hasn't disappeared yet (but that I
will be getting rid of this evening sometime, as it's getting in my

reproduces itself.

This is sometimes triggered by a fast user switch. But not every time, and
most of the time by other things.
I've added the xorg-edgers ppa now to see if it still happens.
I guess the bug is in userspace, it sends a bad command stream or something?

+ Broken Behavior:
+ Fixed Behavior:
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ fill me in with a discussion of likelihood and potential severity of
regressions and how users could get inadvertently affected.
+
+ [Original Report]
  Repro steps:
  * Run Xvfb -ac :99 in a terminal
  * Run DISPLAY=:99 xinput list in a second terminal

  Expected:
List of input devices appears (XTest, core). Xvfb continues to run.

  Actual:
  Xvfb segfaults in first terminal.

This problem affects any user of Xvfb who tries to run a client that
uses the XInput extension. For example, a user runs a new desktop
session, and a session program tries to enumerate the XInput devices (or
the user has a startup script containing any xinput commands).

There is an upstream patch which I've verified fixes the problem:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/hw/vfb/InitInput.c?id=0e7703f9b1927328954a2fc87aac6be244819329
The version of Xorg/Xvfb in Precise has this patch (from inspection of the
source tarball for xvfb package).

We'd like this to be backported to Lucid

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 934770] Re: Trackpad behavior change causes tap-and-drag to lock

2012-02-22 Thread Doug McMahon
This bug wasn't initially just about locked drags nor intended user
actions. It was and still should be considering the poor behavior that
the current settings will produce for common users like myself who have
a basic synaptics touchpad

In that case there are continual unintended highlighting, grabbing of text or
files and temp loss of the left click. Myself others like me shouldn't have
to be figuring out the synclient parameters running commands to gain the
expected full use of our touchpads.
So there should be a visible option to return to that, in System Settings, a
Start up option, whatever.

At least here this is what returns my touchpad to being useful
prevents ALL the unintended nonsense from occurring

synclient LockedDrags=0 TapButton1=1 TapButton2=3 TapButton3=2

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup

2012-02-22 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Hello Alkis,
in what sense does this bug no longer affect ltsp? I still have massive GPU
lockups with the intel driver on our ltsp clients. This is a huge problem for
us.
Lockups do happen in almost every session, markedly when scrolling windows. The
session freezes for some seconds, then windows contents appear scrambled with
old content not erased and new content printed over it.

This problem does not seem to occur on a standalone system, but it does
in ltsp sessions.

So please: this DOES affect ltsp.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 934770] Re: [MASTER] Trackpad behavior change causes tap-and-drag to lock

2012-02-22 Thread Bryce Harrington
@Chase, unless you plan to revert this soon, please make sure this is
mentioned in the beta1 release notes.

** Summary changed:

- Trackpad behavior change causes tap-and-drag to lock
+ [MASTER] Trackpad behavior change causes tap-and-drag to lock

** Description changed:

  Since xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.5.0+git20120210-0ubuntu2, tap-and-
drag locking has been enabled by default. This is a behavior change.
When a tap-and-drag is started, it will continue until a tap ends it
(effectively depressing the left mouse button). The change is an effort
to provide an alternative click-and-drag method for clickpads, where
dragging farther than the size of the trackpad is not possible.

This bug is for collating feedback. If the change is adversely affecting
you, please note it by clicking the green link at the top of this page
This bug affects x people. Does this bug affect you? Please do not add
  extra comments unless absolutely necessary.

- Original bug description
-
+ [Workaround]
+ At least here this is what returns my touchpad to being useful prevents ALL
the unintended nonsense from occurring

+ synclient LockedDrags=0 TapButton1=1 TapButton2=3 TapButton3=2
+
+ [Original bug description]
Not sure if proper source, wasn't the utouch libs

Recently here with others the left click 'select' has been 'randomly'
getting stuck on, causing the cursor to select everything in it's path
otherwise be unresponsive, ie. nothing can be clicked on.

At least here the effect lasts for about 20 -30 sec's, when it happens
if stopping all activity the cursor control return in that time frame

It is also seen on occasion as a 'stuck' grab, same deal, nothing can be
done till something releases. Additionally I've a few instances where
suddenly the left click is non-functional, again control returns within
  20 -30 sec's

With a little practice have been able to cause this to happen within a few
attempts, basically moving the cursor with left button depressed (highlight)
combined with a small tap.
So will attach 2 video's with short descriptions

Disabling 'tap to click' has prevented this from happening inadvertently
  over a day long test

have it when you looked?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 938653] Re: applications fail to redraw

2012-02-22 Thread Bryce Harrington
Looking at graphics-related packages that got updated on your system the
past couple of days:

 upgrade glib2.02012-02-21 15:04:18
2.31.16-0ubuntu2 2.31.18-0ubuntu1
upgrade glibmm2.4 2012-02-22 07:43:13

 upgrade gnome-control-center 2012-02-21 15:04:22

  upgrade gnome-control-center 2012-02-21 22:52:06
1:3.3.5-0ubuntu4 1:3.3.90-0ubuntu1
   upgrade gnome-control-center 2012-02-21 22:52:11
1:3.3.5-0ubuntu4 1:3.3.5-0ubuntu5
 upgrade mesa 2012-02-22 10:13:05
8.0~rc2-0ubuntu5 8.0.0~git20120216+8.0.e3943cf1-0ubuntu0sarvatt
 upgrade qt4-x112012-02-21 22:49:39
4:4.8.0-1ubuntu5 4:4.8.0-1ubuntu6
upgrade xorg-server2012-02-22 07:44:01
2:1.11.4-0ubuntu3 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu4

The xserver change was RAOF's pointer barrier stuff, so not graphical.
The glib2.0 update is pretty big, but doesn't typically have much to do with
graphics rendering.
Similarly with g-c-c.

That seems to leave mesa 8.0.1 as the most likely candidate. Why don't
you go ahead and ppa-purge the mesa-8.0.1 ppa and verify that the issue
goes away. Then I'll forward this bug report upstream to Intel.

2012-02-22 Thread Bryce Harrington
Please attach a screenshot or photo of the screen that shows the issue.

I gather you uninstalled -nvidia and tested that it still happens
without that?

In any case probably should be investigated as a unity issue first since
you are seeing it after updating to 5.4

I also noticed that it breaks the touchpad as soon as I try and open a
Nautilus window via keyboard shortcut. So, not only entering text within
a text field, but using any combined keyboard input seems to cause this
issue to appear.
