[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 524830]

2012-03-27 Thread Jeremy Huddleston
I don't see how this could be happening in xorg-server ... my guess is
that it is kernel related.

Keith, can you comment?

Nicolo, are you still experiencing with newer kernels? Can you attach
system information:

lspci -v
dmesg
/var/log/Xorg.*.log
etc

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 524830]

2012-03-27 Thread Chris Wilson
This just sounds like silly userspace...

However, one question I can easily google:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/15520/how-can-i-tell-ubuntu-to-do-
nothing-when-i-close-my-laptop-lid

And I'd be concerned about userspace crashing like that upon resume...

For the past year, distro bugtrackers have been receiving reports that
Xephyr segfaults when it tries to map its client-facing root window:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/635523
  https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=518960
  https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=47928

The cause of the problem is that, on some 24bpp hosts, this computation:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/tree/hw/kdrive/ephyr/ephyr.c#n255

yields a value for priv-bytes_per_line which is too small.
priv-bytes_per_line is then used by Xephyr to create its host-side
image data buffer (resulting in a buffer that is too small). Then, when
Xephyr maps its root window, it segfaults by writing beyond the end of
the too-small image data buffer while filling its root window in
response to expose-event/damage processing.

As for fixes: ajax proposed one fix for this problem six months ago that
seems to have gotten lost after an unanswered request for an amendment
by keithp:

  http://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/1327/

I tested this patch against Ubuntu's xserver-xorg_2:1.9.0-0ubuntu7
package (from Maverick) and can confirm that it fixed the segfault for
me in that environment.

Still seeing this bug in Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty, not Maverick).

The definition of the KdScreenInfo data structure changed between the
time of the aforementioned patch and now, so the lines:

screen-fb[0].depth
screen-fb[0].bitsPerPixel

should be:

screen-fb.depth
screen-fb.bitsPerPixel

I believe Keith Packard wanted a more robust patch, with the settings
being obtained from the underlying XImage. But my individual need is
smaller, and Xephyr is segfaulting for me, so the patch is good enough
for me. I applied the patch (with the modifications I mentioned) and
Xephyr is now launching properly.

That seems rather premature to me.

use of Xnest, Xvfb, Xfake, and Xephyr and instead advocate use of this

If you want to officially deprecate it in 1.12 and remove it in 1.13,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 881046]

2012-03-27 Thread Chris Bagwell
I use xrandr for scaling to make a small netbook screen able to display
apps that don't fit in 1024x600 and noticed this regression over the
last year in 1.11. I finally decided to look closer since 1.12 didn't
seem to fix the issue and came across this report.

I looked at the revert commit to get idea of area that could possibly be
fixed and it seems like crtc_bounds() is probably a function that should
be returning a value related to panning/scaling.

I traced were xrandr output is querying the panning/scaling values it
displays and looks like comes from ProcRRGetCrtcInfo() and that function
makes use of RRCrtcGetScanoutSize() to scaling width/height to correct
size.  Panning uses rrGetPanning().

To test the idea, I modified crtc_bounds to handle scaling case by
adding ProcRRGetCrtcInfo() call. It does seem to work and I've not
noticed a negative in limitted testing.

I patched a source RPM so I can't offer a real patch right now but here
is my modified version of function to get an idea:

static void
crtc_bounds(RRCrtcPtr crtc, int *left, int *right, int *top, int *bottom)
{
int width, height;
RRCrtcGetScanoutSize (crtc, width, height);

*left = crtc-x;
*top = crtc-y;

switch (crtc-rotation) {
case RR_Rotate_0:
case RR_Rotate_180:
default:
   *right = crtc-x + width;
   *bottom = crtc-y + height;
   return;
case RR_Rotate_90:
case RR_Rotate_270:
   *right = crtc-x + height;
   *bottom = crtc-y + width;
   return;
}
}

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 881046]

2012-03-27 Thread Chris Bagwell
I reviewed the other patchwork patches just now. Patch 6209 in Comment
7 addresses panning part of issue in crtc_bounds() using same logic from
ProcRRGetCrtcInfo().

If you combine my modification from Comment 17 with the patch 6209 then
you'll get solution for both scaling and panning.

Not sure its the right solution and it seems a little excessive to
compute each X/Y movement... but I hope it helps move us along to final
solution.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966046] Re: Libreoffice startup (soffice) GUI glitch: side bars are not refreshed

2012-03-27 Thread fracting
Christopher, this bug affects Libreoffice 3.5.1 and Libreoffice 3.4.4.

When I try to reproduce this bug with Libreoffice 3.4.4 after install LO3.5.1,
remove LO3.5.1, reinstall LO3.4.4,
I found LO3.4.4 exit silently after displaying the splash, should it be a
separate bug?

This issue prevent me to reproduce the bug on LO3.4.4, in fact I found
on LO3.5.1 the bug appear on gnome classic without effects as well, so
I'm doubting my previous reported result.

A few days ago there was a NVIDIA driver update. At that time I backed
down from the version-current updates and to the version-current
[recommended] driver.

That has resolved ALL my issues.

After that I find the original bug can reproduce on gnome classic

Occasionally, compiz crashes after opening a new X window and it ends up
calling intelSetTexBuffer2, like in the attached stacktrace.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966163] Crash report cannot be processed

2012-03-27 Thread Apport retracing service
Thank you for your report!

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate a useful symbolic stack trace). This
might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system
at the time of the report:

libglib2.0-0 version 2.31.22-0ubuntu1 required, but 2.32.0-0ubuntu1 is
available

Please upgrade your system to the latest package versions. If you still
encounter the crash, please file a new report.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 965003] Re: dell mini 10v touchpad dragging stopped working

2012-03-27 Thread Chase Douglas
I'm stumped. I don't see any bad values in your xinput props. Was it
working before and then it stopped?

Please record the events from your trackpad using the instructions here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Multitouch/Testing/uTouchEvEmu#Debugging

Perform a simple click and drag with two fingers. I'll then replay it
here to see if I get the same result.

Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966352] [NEW] Dual-Monitor not working with fglrx in 12.04

2012-03-27 Thread joni
Public bug reported:

A few weeks ago I upgraded to 12.04 because I wanted to test it. I did
the update in 2 parts because my computer crashed the first time. A
few days ago i updated a few packages with apt-get (about 20 packages I
think).

Suddenly my dual-monitor setup did not work any longer (same bug as
written below), I decided to reinstall Ubuntu to get a clean OS.

Installing fglrx-updates with jockey didn't work so i installed it
through the terminal.

Then i set up up my screens in amdcccle (multi-desktop). That way it worked
perfectly in 11.10.
Now the only thing i got is a white primary screen and a working secondary
screen. If my mouse enters the left screen, the cursor changes to an X. I can
right click on the blank screen and the menu opens, but i can not have any
windows on the screen. I can change which monitor works either my left or my
right screen by editing xorg.conf.

If I activate Xinerama in amdcccl both screens work, but i only get
Unity2D automatically at login and everything feels really slow. In
11.10 both screens worked without Xinerama (i had Xinerama turned off
because i have the top-bar of unity on both screen, which i don't like)

My graphics card is an AMD Sapphire 6850.

Edit: I can't remember exactly and i can't test it right now but I think
with open source drivers it worked.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966399] [NEW] Mesa related GPU hangs on Sandybridge and Ivybridge systems

2012-03-27 Thread Robert Hooker
Public bug reported:

During QA testing of 11.10 on unreleased Ivybridge systems, we have
encountered quite a few GPU hang bugs in mesa that take out the desktop
that have been fixed in the stable mesa-7.11 branch after 11.10
released. Given that 7.11.2 is quite large and different than 7.11.0
that is in oneiric, I've backported just the fixes for the issues we
have found and they are all included in 12.04.

These include:

GPU reset loop leading to a hard hang of the system when these apps are run on
Ivybridge: qgears2, openarena, unigine heaven, trine, minecraft
Hard hang of the system when these apps are run on Sandybridge: trine, oilrush
Wrong colors rendered in lightsmark on Ivybridge

To verify, install phoronix test suite on an Ivybridge system, and run
the qgears2 benchmark

TEST CASE:
1. log in to desktop on an Ivybridge system
2. install phoronix-test-suite (sudo apt-get install phoronix-test-suite)
3. run lightsmark or qgears2 test (phoronix-test suite run lightsmark)

If it fails, dmesg will be flooded with these errors and the desktop
will be unusable

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 962773] Re: [VM800] Xorg freezes when a player plays a video

2012-03-27 Thread realmagnum
Why include [VM800] in my summary?

My lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. CN700/P4M800
Pro/P4M800 CE/VN800 Graphics [S3 UniChrome Pro] (rev 01)

The correct should be [VN800], or I understood it wrong?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966663] [NEW] display driver crashes - black screen

2012-03-27 Thread ray
Public bug reported:

sometimes when i am watching a video with vlc or something uses the
video driver (most programs do in a way..) my ubuntu oneiric, running on
a x40, the screen turns black and all display output is gone until i
reboot. no tty. nothing. (i know of some blogs telling about the driver
situation - no support because opengl does not work (?) - but hey - 2
friends have notebooks with the same graphics chipset. i think this
driver still is relevant.)

some info - as described - only vlc running and suddenly all black
again:
