[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 589485] Re: Ignores physical display size and calculates based on 96DPI
Fair point. Unfortunately from what I can see the xorg developers are not interested in fixing this and believe that the current behaviour is both correct and acceptable. Some of them seem to be suggesting that it is the job of the window manager/desktop environment to pass the desired settings to xrandr after receiving the monitor config from xrandr. When and if they change their mind we might be able to close this bug. In the meantime I thought I might pass on some more info... Ubuntu developers are planning HiDPI support for the Ubuntu Linux boot experience - when dealing with GRUB2's boot-loader menu and the Plymouth boot splash screen. They are also investigating HiDPI support for Linux virtual consoles. Specifically, Developers at this week's vUDS session will be working on a 2x version of the GRUB2 font for basic HiDPI support by just appearing twice as big, working on GRUB2 support for returning a display's physical dimensions, work out support for a scaling factor within Ubuntu's Plymouth theme, and support for a scaling factor within the console-setup font configuration. There is also bug #1292218 which is described as The lockscreen has correct Panel HiDPI support, but the prompt doesn't scale right now. Some of this work might be ready for Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr but it is unlikely that all of the HiDPI improvements will be ready for that release. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/589485 Title: Ignores physical display size and calculates based on 96DPI To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xorg-server/+bug/589485/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1293425] [NEW] [Dell Vostro 3550] Display resolution keeps switching with external monitor connected
Public bug reported: My laptop is DELL Vostro 3550. BIOS A11. If I use external monitor and extend my desktop to both the built-in laptop display and the external LCD, the display settings are auto-changed by the system. This may include: - Resetting to mirrored displays at 1024x768 - Resetting to a single display on the laptop panel - Resetting to a single display on the external monitor I am finding though that the issue is worse by far if I use AMD GPU than if I use Intel GPU. I switch between them with AMD CCC, however the issue is present even if I never install AMD drivers and just use Intel GPU out-of-the-box. So, if I use AMD GPU my monitors keep switching between resolutions, mirroring switches on and off very frequently - like more times every minute. If I use Intel GPU I can go a day without spontaneous switching of resolutions and/or mirroring displays, sometimes it happens like 2 or 3 times per day. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1279412] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in xdl_xs115_atiddxPixmapIsTypeOf()
For me this bug causes Skype to crash X (mentioned in linked bug 1286039). System worked fine on 13.04 and 13.10 (over-eager upgrade to 14.04 to get 5.1 HDMI sound working!). This can be worked around by unplugging the USB webcam and then changing the Skype settings to not use a camera - then the webcam can be safely reattached. I guess this would be more difficult for someone with a built in webcam. Obviously this workaround does nothing to alleviate the earache I am getting from my mother-in-law about no longer being able to see her grandson, so if there is any further information I can provide to help with fixing this, please let me know! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1279412 Title: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in xdl_xs115_atiddxPixmapIsTypeOf() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1279412/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1244778] [NEW] Xorg should be way more resilient or at least print detailed information in presence of errors in configuration files
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Basically the real issue is that whenever there's an error in some xorg configruation file, xorg fails to start, instead of trying to fallback to some minimal working settings and/or printing debuggable information about the error. It's too fragile. By doing something wrong with some xorg configuration file, you may end up with a system that won't even boot and allow you to fix the error. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1293314] Re: Severe performance regression with xserver 1.15
Updates from 3/17 Xorg benchmarking: On 3-17-2014, I updated X to the latest Trusty packages (xserver-xorg- core=xserver-xorg-core_2%3a1.15.0-1ubuntu7_amd64.deb) and retested. The Critter benchmark may not be of any great importance as it is a 2d game in Opengl that runs very fast, but the regression is on the order of a 49% drop in framerate. This is absolutely repeatable (on two different machines) by leaving only one opponent on the screens and intentionally permitting all shields to be destroyed. The Scorched3d benchmark gave inconsistant results. With the previous X server, I was getting 50-70fps, with the new version I sometimes got 25-35fps, but sometimes got right back to the 50-70fps range, though the highest speeds did not appear as often as with the older version of X. Scorched3d can be a bit difficult to benchmark as which map appears cannot be controlled. In February I got nearly unplayable results in Scorched3d (11-25fps), though some of that was a since-resolved hardware issue and some was the hyper-Z issue with the first versions of Mesa 10.2 installed at that time. No change at all in Critter on Radeon, don't know if these results will translate into regressions on openGL loads I do not have or not. On my Intel Atom netbook, by comparsion, Critter is barely playable due to dropped frames. When the new xserver came out, it was worse, I remember just over 60fps but with worse framedropping than ever. Now about 110 fps on the netbook with fewer dropped frames. My conclusion is that some progress might be being made somewhere, but I don't know what changes in what package are helping if any. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1293314 Title: Severe performance regression with xserver 1.15 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1293314/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1293314] Re: Severe performance regression with xserver 1.15
Further tests with today's Mesa 10.2 (3-17-2014) Getting hard to reliably benchmark Scorched3d due to varying loads, but seemed to run a little faster than earlier test today. Still a bit inconsistant with some screens showing 25-30fps, but more of the screens now at 50-70, and saw 70fps a bit more. Critter was interesting: little change in MAXIMUM framerate, but minimum framerate is now at 75% of maximum, with few drops below 300fps from 360, wich is 83% of minimim. Used to be maximum of 690fps with big drops under load to about (sometimes below) 400fps-all faster than now but much less steady with minumum at 55% or less of maximum. Again, this is not much of a benchmark due to high framerates on a 2d game, but still interesting.
