[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2009785] [NEW] WLAN functionality cannot be controlled any more

2023-03-08 Thread Wolfgang Laun
Public bug reported:

After the latest upgrade and a reboot, the WLAN connectivity features
have disappeared from the menu on the upper right hand side menu, and
the system does not connect to the local WLAN at my home; in short: WLAN
DOES NOT WORK ANY MORE (Luckily, Ethernet connectivity is still
available so I can send this using USB tethering.) New, however is
Bluetooth connectivity control. Turning this off, turns on airplane
mode; turning airplane mode off returns the Bluetooth control menu
entry.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1574364] [NEW] Mouse disappears after suspend and unsuspend

2016-04-24 Thread Wolfgang Noichl
Public bug reported:

When the computer is suspended (from within xfce), and then woken up again, the
mouse cursor disappears.
CTRL+ALT+F1 CTRL+ALT+F2 makes it appear again.

The machine has not been installed from scratch, but rather updated from
15.10.

This doesn't seem to be hardware-specific; I have the same issue both on
a rather recent desktop box and an eight year old notebook. Both have
Intel graphics, though.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1525878] [NEW] Wacom serial pen stops working in kernel 4.2.0-19

2015-12-14 Thread Wolfgang Noichl
Public bug reported:

The pen (on a Fujitsu T5010) completely stopped working when using Kernel
4.2.0-19.
When booting 4.2.0-18, it works again, so I suspect it's somehow kernel related.

When booting 4.2.0-19, xsetwacom --list devices is completely empty.
When booting 4.2.0-18, see output below.

xsetwacom --list devices
Serial Wacom Tablet FUJ02e5 stylus id: 17 type: STYLUS
Serial Wacom Tablet FUJ02e5 eraser id: 18 type: ERASER

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1430888] Re: DRI_PRIME with radeon/intel windows do not draw

2015-04-08 Thread Wolfgang Wallner
In my case, starting steam causes the text 'reporting 9 5 33 271' to be added
to /var/log/Xorg.0.log three times.
It's always printed twice in a row and again a few seconds later.
For example these are two starts of steam:

[ 17002.853] reporting 9 5 33 271
[ 17002.878] reporting 9 5 33 271
[ 17006.628] reporting 9 5 33 271
[ 17021.267] reporting 9 5 33 271
[ 17021.297] reporting 9 5 33 271
[ 17025.236] reporting 9 5 33 271

But this does happen with and without DRI_PRIME=1, so I don't know if it
is related to this bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1430888] Re: DRI_PRIME with radeon/intel windows do not draw

2015-04-08 Thread Wolfgang Wallner
This bug is already present in 14.10.

My system is a HP Pavilion laptop with a muxless Intel/AMD combination
(Intel Sandybridge HD graphics and AMD Radeon HD6770).

A Workaround that works most of the time is to press Win+D again and again to
switch between desktop and game application.
After a few iterations the problem is usually gone: once a game (or steam)
starts drawing, everything works fine.

The problem is also independent of multi-monitor configurations.
I use a dual monitor setup, and it happens regardless if both monitors are
activated or just one of them.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1430888] Re: DRI_PRIME with radeon/intel windows do not draw

2015-04-08 Thread Wolfgang Wallner
I tried to reproduce the problem with glxgears.
It can happen, but it is harder to reproduce than with steam.
For steam it happens every time, for glxgears it only happened twice out of ~15
tries.

But when it happens in glxgears, no reporting 9 5 33 271 lines are
added to Xorg.0.log, so I think these are two different issues.

The compositing-enable trick also works for glx_gears.

As far as I can tell the problem only happens with certain programs.
I think it depends on whether or not OpenGL is used for drawing.
For me it happens for

*) Steam
*) Games (both Steam and others like e.g. supertuxkart)
*) glxgears

It does not happen for typical office programs that use GUI toolkits
like Qt or GTK, e.g. okular, gedit, etc.

According to [1] Steam uses a custom toolkit called VGUI, which is also uses by
their Source engine.
Thus I would guess that it is also drawn using OpenGL.

valve-use-for-steam

2015-04-08 Thread Wolfgang Wallner
Additional note regarding compositing:

*) The problem happens regardless if compositing is enabled or disabled.
*) Enabling compositing fixes the problem (as far as I can tell always).

If I start with compositing on, I need to toggle it for the problem to be gone.
If I start with compositing off, I just need to enable it.

-- Something that is done when compositing is turned on fixes the
problem.

(I use KDE and use Shift+Alt+F12 to enable/disable compositing)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1306897] Re: xbmc with vdpau crashes on stop

2014-04-14 Thread Wolfgang Schupp
@mlankhorst: If I'm interpreting your comment correctly, this bug will not be
fixed for trusty final?
This would be a real bummer and make trusty unusable for htpc users on AMD
hardware, while it otherwise provides a nearly perfect basis.

I noticed this problem using Eclipse. I got a workaround - if I switch

the time. Tested with KDE

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work

2011-10-03 Thread Wolfgang Schnerring
Just another voice of confirmation: Dell Latitude E6410, couldn't
configure squat about the touchpad, installed psmouse-alps-
dkms_0.9_all.deb (from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/550625/comments/466).
Configuring the Touchpad now works fine, and the Trackpoint scrolling
function also kept working (which it didn't with 0.3 or thereabouts).
Thanks so much, Seth, for fixing this!

Quick aside question: is it possible to adjust the sensitivity of the
trackpoint stick?

That' the idea. If you feel it's too difficult then don't do it. Those

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 776306] Re: nouveau causing system freeze on suspend, natty, hp dv6

2011-05-05 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
Thanks for finding that out.

There is a ppa for cutting edge graphics if you want to see whether the bug is
already fixed in newer versions:
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
Not sure though how much newer than the stock natty nouveau they currently are.

A method to unload the nouveau module:
http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/KernelModeSetting#unload
It shouldn't freeze if it isn't loaded. Unless it freezes on unloading.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 773471] Re: No brightness on LCD monitor (Acer Aspire 5732Z)

2011-05-03 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
Things people use on black screens:
external monitor
blind typing of sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=a1 (a1 is just an example
hex value for the brightness) on a terminal window called up with
ctrl+alt+T
flashlight
just plain hard staring under certain lighting conditions

So now it boots up with a bright display but still no hotkeys with
Kamal's kernel?

2011-05-02 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
By the other you mean the 2.6.39 kernel? That was only good for
testing whether the bug still exists in the newest kernel version. Yes,
you can uninstall it.

So the patched one works for you? I think I did misunderstand your
comment about the mouse move. Please clarify: It comes up bright when
you boot? Then it goes black when you move the mouse? You then use the
hotkeys to make it brighter again and now it stays that way even if you
move the mouse? The hotkeys still work even after a suspend?

Sounds like my situation (bug 518002) except that mine still comes up

Have you tried Kamal's patched kernel (see comment 9)? The patched
kernel also comes for 10.10 so you can try it there, too.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 773471] Re: No brightness on LCD monitor (Acer Aspire 5732Z)

2011-05-01 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
I have just found a fix for my system. Add this ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~kamalmostafa/+archive/linux-kamal-mjgbacklight
to your sources e.g. with:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:kamalmostafa/linux-kamal-mjgbacklight
then reload the package information and upgrade your system (e.g. with synaptic)

This should give you a new kernel and gnome-power-manager. Shut down and
boot.

For my system this kernel gives me full hotkey backlight control. I hope
it works for you too. Let me know how it goes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 773471] Re: No brightness on LCD monitor (Acer Aspire 5732Z)

2011-05-01 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
I just found out myself that the patched kernel comes with a nasty
drawback. My backlight comes up fine and I can control the brightness
just fine until I close the lid. After reopening it stays black no
matter what I do, including setpci.

Your symptoms sound different, however. How long does it work with the patched
kernel? Till the first mouse move? Do the backlight hotkeys work till then?
When it goes black can you bring it back on with setpci?
output from uname -a and ls /sys/class/backlight?
Does the command: xset dpms force off
switch it off and does it come back on when you press a key or at least with
setpci?
What happens after you close the lid?

I am hoping that by providing enough details the author of the patch
will be able to fix this.

2011-05-01 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
Can you confirm (e.g. with uname -a on a terminal) that you really
booted into the patched kernel 2.6.38-9.43+kamal~mjgbacklight4. If you
did not select the kernel at boot time (hold shift to get a grub menu
to select) you might have booted into the 2.6.39 kernel from the
previous test.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 773471] Re: No brightness on LCD monitor (Acer Aspire 5732Z)

2011-04-30 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
Anyway, please test whether it is fixed in the newest kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.39-rc4-natty/ . You
need the 2 *i386.deb and the *all.deb. Download and install with sudo
dpkg -i ... from a terminal.

Also, I wonder why your attached BootDmesg.txt shows you running Linux
version 2.6.35-22-generic. Natty comes with a 2.6.38 kernel. What kernel
are you running when the bug appears? Check that e.g. by typing uname -a
in a terminal.

Ok. So it works with the 2.6.35 kernel from maverick but not with the

The screen does update very reluctantly unless I move the mouse. This
can be seen very well e.g. in sytem monitor resources. The graphs move
smoothly as long as I wiggle the mouse, if I stop the graphs only update
in fits and bounds. This does not happen always, but the system has
gotten into this state rather regularly for as long as I have been
trying maverick afair. The system also leaves this buggy state by
itself. Often within a couple of minutes. CPU and IO load are normal at
  all times.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 633424] Re: maverick screen does not update except when mouse moves or key is held down

2010-10-04 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
On maverick with the newest mainline kernel 2.6.36-999-generic
#201010021408 SMP Sat Oct 2 14:11:40 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux and xorg-
edger I have so far not seen this bug. I saw this bug with stock kernel
and xorg-edgers, so it seems the kernel makes the difference.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 538648] Re: [Intel GM45] Irregular sync flashes on 8086:2a42 (Needs i915.powersave quirk)

2010-09-22 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
** Description changed:

+ [Status]
+ Fixed in maverick
+ Not fixed in lucid (bug still seen on 2010-09-22 with kernel 2.6.32-25)
+
  [Workaround 1]
Install Andy Whitcroft's test kernel from
http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp538648-lucid/ (see comment #88).

  [Workaround 2]
As workaround add the option i915.powersave=0 to the kernel command line in
the grub config (for GRUB 2: edit /etc/default/grub and add i915.powersave=0
to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX, then run sudo update-grub; for GRUB 1: edit
/boot/grub/menu.lst and add i915.powersave=0 to the end of the line beginning
with # kopt=, then run sudo update-grub).

  [Report]
  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

When I first installed Lucid on my T500 I believe everything seemd to be
fine with the display. Recently though the screen has started giving
flashes -- as though there was some form of sync problem for the
display. The flashes are of irregular frequency and occurrence. I
haven't yet seen any pattern to the behaviour. They are however
  exceptionally annoying.

I believe I am using the Intel chipset graphics device -- I am not
actually aware of how to switch to using the alternate graphics
hardware, but I am told it is not worth bothering with, so I haven't.

I am using the Compiz window manager so I guess the problem could be
  there rather than with Xorg.

There is no xorg.conf file so there is no overide of the default
  behaviour.

I am not sure what programs to run to give useful output for this problem. I
have attached the current Xorg log file.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 633424] Re: maverick screen does not update except when mouse moves or key is held down

2010-09-19 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
Happened again with a current live maverick usb stick booted via loopmount.
Details:
It happened when I plugged in the usb umts modem. I had done not much more than
open the resources tab of system monitor (which makes the bug easy to see).
Continuously moving the mouse makes graphics update smooth again. Pressing a
key like shift does not make it quite as smooth.

FWIW I have seen apport-gpu-error-intel.py close unexpectedly more
than once.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 640749] [NEW] [xorg-edgers] openarena graphics freezes

2010-09-16 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

With xorg-edgers drivers (but not with stock drivers) openarena graphics always
freezes after at most a few minutes of gameplay. Judging from the audio the
game goes on, but I only see the frozen screen. I can go to ctrl+alt+f1 and
kill -9 openarena but the frozen screen stays.
Unfortunately apport-cli -f -p openarena does not seem to have collected any
really interesting stuff. If you need more please tell me what I should do.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 633424] [NEW] maverick screen does not update except when mouse moves

2010-09-08 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

The screen does update very reluctantly unless I move the mouse. This
can be seen very well e.g. in sytem monitor resources. The graphs move
smoothly as long as I wiggle the mouse, if I stop the graphs only update
in fits and bounds. This does not happen always, but the system has
gotten into this state rather regularly for as long as I have been
trying maverick afair. The system also leaves this buggy state by
itself. Often within a couple of minutes. CPU and IO load are normal at
all times.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 432024] Re: Keyboard layout initialization

2010-08-20 Thread Wolfgang
Fabio,

This was reported on 8.04.3 and persisted on all Hardy upgrades. I've
moved on to 10.04 and the problem no longer exists. I never ran Karmic
or Lucid and don't have an easy way to go back. Since the problem was
related to maintaining state, it probably can't be checked with a live CD.

Regards,

-wp

 Hello Wolfgang

Can you verify if this problem is present with the latest updated Karmic
 or Lucid's packages?

If it still exist, please run in a terminal:

 Thanks
 Fabio

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 538648] Re: [Intel GM45] Irregular sync flashes on 8086:2a42 (Needs i915.powersave quirk)

2010-05-28 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
** Description changed:

- [Workaround]
+ [Workaround 1]
+ Install Andy Whitcroft's test kernel from
http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp538648-lucid/ (see comment #88).
+
+ [Workaround 2]

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 546578] Re: black screen after a few user switches

2010-05-26 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
Should I install all the packages from that repo?
Not necessary . The package gnome-screensaver is supposed to fix this by
itself. If you still have a problem chances are you have a different bug. You
should file a separate bug report with a detailed description of your problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 583425] [NEW] neomagic driver does not support custom mouse pointers

2010-05-20 Thread Wolfgang Eder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-neomagic

i use ubuntu 10.04 on my sony vaio z600.
when i use an application that changes the mouse pointer
(i tried fontforge and squeak), there either is no cursor
at all, or a garbled cursor that looks like barcodes.

disabling the hardware cursor support and using
software cursor works around the problem

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 529882] Re: black screen when switching between multiple X session

2010-05-16 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 546578 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/546578

Hi zvaral

First of all thank you for reporting this bug.

I saw that the two reports were about the same bug and made the decision to
mark them duplicates this way around for purely practical reasons:
afaik a bug which has duplicates can not be made a duplicate itself without
unduping all those duplicates. bug 546578 already had 4 duplicates.
bug 546578 had the upstream link (and as far as I can see those bug header
entries are not inherited from duplicates)
bug 546578 already had a header entry for xorg-server which has been suggested
as the culprit in the upstream comments (the bug shows on both ati and intel)
it also had an even higher affects count
it had the workaround in the bug description before bug 529882
So all in all this seemed to be the better (more convenient, more useful) way
to mark them duplicates.

Best regards
Wolfgang Kufner

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 538648] Re: [Intel GM45] Irregular sync flashes (Lenovo T500, Dell Insp. 1545)

2010-05-03 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
** Description changed:

+ [Workaround]
+ As workaround add the option i915.powersave=0 to the kernel command line in
the grub config (for GRUB 2: edit /etc/default/grub and add i915.powersave=0
to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX, then run sudo update-grub; for GRUB 1: edit
/boot/grub/menu.lst and add i915.powersave=0 to the end of the line beginning
with # kopt=, then run sudo update-grub).
+
+ [Report]

OK, I've to recall one of the statements I made above, apparently the
BIOS change for the ATI radeon GPU from PCI to PCIe didn't fix the issue
of the misplaced litte hints / status windows for that PC, only seems
they show up less frequently..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 451518] Re: [i945g] karmic: INFO: task i915/* blocked for more than 120 seconds.

2010-03-13 Thread Wolfgang Griech
I'm seeing this problem too, since I moved from Kubuntu 8.04 to 9.10.
HW: Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook E4010D and a intel 955 GPU, all the latest
patches for xorg and kde loaded, also from PPA. Kernel 2.6.31-20, but
same problems from on -14. KDE 4.4.1, xserver-xorg-video-intel -
2:2.9.01-1. Basically 3 types of graphics errors with different severity
and effects:

the little tabs or hints with detailed info from the task bar don't
always show up at the right place, and don't always get removed right. A
bit annoying, but not too serious. One way to reproduce: left click on
the network manager icon after bootup, the info shows up in the top left
corner of the screen. Right click on the icon, info directly next to it,
left click from from on then on the same. Every other effects alike are
random, couldn't find a way to reproduce.

video from a webcam (Logitech C300) on skype or cheese never worked for
me on 9.10. No streaming of any video data in anyone of the 2 apps, but
mplayer worked fine! I almost gave up on this, but the latest xorg intel
driver update around the frame buffer alignment bug made it happen, and
everything perfectly works now, thx!

the third bug is about the one mentioned everywhere above, a complete
lockup of the screen, randomly, maybe 2 days in a row fine, then 3 times
a day. Always in conjunction with some heavier graphics activities, like
opening some new windows, selecting a bigger text etc., and only a
complete shutdown helps. I'm still not that deep into all the tools, but
after such a lockup we still can get onto the laptop with ssh, and I
think it was ksysguard showing the i915_gem_retire_work_handler status
for the i915 driver. This bug is extremely annoying, and I've lost quite
some work due to it already..

OK, a few days ago I found just by coincidence the 100% killer for my
system, it's Google Earth, the latest downloadable version. Just start,
and within a few seconds my laptop graphics is dead. Perfectly works on
another system with all the same os and graphics versions as on my
laptop, but with a ATI radeon GPU, could verify this today, so it's not
like I thought a bug in Google Earth, but apparently in the graphics
driver.

this other PC also doesn't experience the lockups, and never did so. But
it had this hints location problem too, which disappeared since we've
changed in the BIOS (!!!) the default settings for the graphics card
from PCI to PCIe, which it really is.

sorry if I messed up a little bit here and maybe put too many things
into this thread, but I think most or all of the bugs are clearly
related and come down just to the intel i915 xorg driver.

could anybody with more linux knowledge than me please verify the Google
Earth i915 killer, and publish the appropriate info, or tell me what
exactly to do in order to provide the necessary info.

TIA

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 439188] Re: [GM45] blender rotate (xrandr) on external monitor freezes, logouts, corruptions

2010-02-16 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
I just did some testing on this bug with lucid 20100216 desktop iso
64bit loopback mounted from hd via grub2.

with current lucid graphics drivers:
stock blender (2.49): freeze on the second rotate back after also rotating the
cube in blenders 3D window. no ctrl+alt+F1, but sysrq+K works. Furthermore, the
left rotated blender fullscreen window takes only about the upper half of the
screen.
blender 2.5alpha0: same freeze.

with current xorg-edgers drivers (mesa7.8.0 git20100211):
no freezes with either blender version.
Some small visual problems appear that then go away completely:
sometimes blender first expands over both screens and on first click in blender
scales back to fullscreen on the big screen (as it should have been from the
start)
once or twice there were strange redraw problems. e.g. the configure display
settings menue appeared bit by bit only on mouseover.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502153] Re: Acer 5635Z no internal display after bootup - external monitor working

2010-01-08 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 425165 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/425165

Thanks for trying to make ubuntu better.

As you have pointed out this report is a duplicate of bug 425165 so I am
marking it as such.

As I have said in several comments of bug 425165, this has already been
fixed in lucid. So the future looks bright for us owners of the 5635Z
:-) .

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 472687] Re: blender 2.5 regression - cpu flatlines at 100% on default scene

2009-11-18 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
hypothesis: karmic's version of openal is the problem

workaround 1: echo 'drivers = alsa,oss,solaris,dsound,winmm,port,wave'
 ~/.alsoftrc
(back up your old .alsoftrc if you have one)
restart

workaround 2:
compile blender with WITH_BF_OPENAL = 'false'

I have only tried workaround 1. So far no more 100% CPU. But
since I never could dependably reproduce it all this needs further
testing.

happens both on this notebook with xorg-edgers and on an extensa 5635Z
with stock karmic.

was able to reproduce one time out of three with LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1
on the stock karmic system.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 378554] Re: [G45] (UXA) openarena crashes after 1-20 min of play

2009-10-01 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
Hi Olaf

Do you still see the bug, especially with karmic or karmic+xorg-edgers?
I had the openarena-benchmark from phoronix running last week. That ran just
fine on comparable hardware and it takes about 10 to 20 minutes to complete, I
guess. That was with current karmic development version + xorg-edgers iirc.
