Chris Wilson, thank you for following up on this. The Description data was 
obtained in an Xubuntu Live CD Environment:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/12.04/alpha-2/

I am not terribly familiar with compositing, which OS has which backend,
etc.

However, the problem was not reproducible in a Ubuntu 11.04 Live CD
Environment (link is long gone as it's all Live DVD now :( ). I think
11.04 uses Metacity with compositing disabled by default?! I've CC'ed
Bryce Harrington on this bug so please correct me if I'm mistaken.

minimum set of packages for xfce to work. So it's not default Ubuntu

upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag.  This can be 
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the 
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

your crash report is missing. Please follow these instructions to have apport 
report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic 
retracer. One may execute at the Terminal:
sudo apt-get -y install xserver-xorg-core-dbg libgl1-mesa-dri-dbg 
xserver-xorg-video-mach64-dbg xserver-xorg-video-r128-dbg 
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau-dbg xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg 
xserver-xorg-video-ivtv-dbg xserver-xorg-video-geode-dbg 
xserver-xorg-video-amd-dbg xserver-xorg-video-radeon-dbg 
xserver-xorg-video-ati-dbg xserver-xorg-video-openchrome-dbg  sudo service 
apport start force_start=1

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now reproduce the crash, then open your file manager, navigate to your 
/var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is 
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed 
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug 
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more

hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is
still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of
Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a
Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically
gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
results.

could be caused by any number of things, and you need to take some
additional steps to provide a complete report.

When did you upgrade to this version of Ubuntu? When did you first
notice the freezes occurring?

How frequently do the freezes occur? How many per day would you say you
experience?

List the applications you typically have open at the time of the freeze.

Think back to the last few times it froze. What activities were you
doing in each of those times?

Do you have compiz enabled? Does the issue go away if you disable it?

If your system is a laptop, do you suspend/resume it? Had you resumed at
some point prior to the freezes?

Finally, and most importantly, please collect a GPU dump after reproducing the 
bug. Packages to install and directions for doing this are available at:

Darxus, this could be a non-kernel related driver issue. I'll set the
package to xorg, which will get this looked at by the appropriate driver
maintainer, so they may better judge this.

  I've used Feisty and Gutsy but this problem has started happening only
  recently.  Here are the steps to reproduce:
  
  1. Open a document in oowriter.
  
  2. Put the laptop to sleep.
  
  3. Resume the laptop.
  
  Here are the symptoms:
  
  1. Scrolling in the openoffice document is jerky.  Basically, if I hit
  page up or page down, oowriter freezes for a few seconds and compiz
  grays the oowriter window (to show that the app is not responding),
  eventually oowriter unfreezes, refreshes its screen and is responsive
  again.  If I try to scroll again, the same freeze repeats.
  
  2. Sometimes oowriter seems to also cause other applications to
  temporarily be unresponsive.  The symptom here is that compiz grays
  *all* the windows on the screen for a few seconds until oowriter becomes
  reponsive again.
  
  3. No other application freezes like that after resume.  Note that
  symptom 2 above happens *only* when oowriter is running.
  
  WORKAROUND: Restart OOo/LO.
  
  WORKAROUND: Turn off compiz.

+ Could you please execute the following at the Terminal:
apport-collect -p nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 185600
+ Does this issue occur in Precise?
+ Does this issue occur with the nouveau driver?
+ After resuming from a suspend, could you reproduce the problem then attach 
the following files to this report:
/var/log/kern.log
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
