Include actual kernel

2006-08-24 Thread Benjamin Zeller
we introduced unattended at a large customer's site and are very very happy
with it.

We also managed a bunch of unsolved problems, like booting and installing from
DVD, building menus for different keyboard layouts and for deciding whether
to load USB and PCMCIA-Support or not, as there are some machines, which only
work without loading one or both of the supports mentioned above.

Now my question:

ATM, we are working with 4.7. Is there any howto available, on how to build a
kernel image with a newer kernel, especially on how to include the fitting
initrd?

I would be very pleased, If you could help me to get further, as the customer
always has got quite new hardware which needs a newer kernel for support.

Kindly regards from germany

Did you have a look at the unattended and unattended-devel mailing
list archives? There are lot's of posts regarding the wiki page

http://ubertechnique.com/unattended/NTLDRNotFound

there this is described.

Best wishes from Leipzig/Germany and good luck with your new

Looks quite good. But what I don't get yet:

Where do I have to place which kernel? And how do I compile it, to fit
unattended.
Or is it just downloading e.g. linux-2.6.17.11.tar.bz2 from kernel.org and
putting it in place? Kindof step-by-step might be useful :-)

I hope, that this will be the result :-) Updating dosemu and parted n stuff
like that would be nice too, as I don't see that the project will release any
further files.

Yes. Did you try what's written on the page under "compiling
unattended from cvs"?

> Kindof step-by-step might be useful :-)
I mean, it's on the page, isn't it:

-
cd unattended/linuxboot
copy Makefile in there (available for download on this site)
make download (in case of error, retry, can take some while until
you got everything)
cat misc/nail-floppy.txt | sed s/2.6.15.6/2.6.16.20/g >
misc/nail-floppy.txt
replace "2.6.16.20" with the version of the kernel you are
really using in Makefile
make tftpboot (users wanting to have the ISO instead of the TFTP
boot have to enter make iso here and copy the ISO instead of the
TFTP boot files later on)
when the Kernel configuration runs, press Enter for using default values
...
-

If you like to use kernel 2.6.17.11, then change this in Makefile
and in misc/nail-floppy.txt. Don't change other versions, e.g.
busybox, since newer versions sometimes don't work, or a patch is
needed - see other mails in this list. Perhaps you can copy your own
.config to the kernel directory and/or adjust it.

Updateing parted isn't a good idea, too - that's why the
"NTLDRnotfound" page exist's ...

Just "make download", each package is downloaded to /tmp (AFAIK),
unpacked to the unattended/linuxboot dir, package in /tmp deleted
and so on. If you want to unpack it yourself, just read
unattended/linuxboot/README.txt

OK, tried to use Kernel 2.6.17.11
Edited Makefile (had to substitute some more filenames, as these version don't
exist anymore).

Result of "make tftpboot":

Sometimes you must have the corresponding -dev packages installed on
your linux system, I remember that I had to install some, but not
which. Here is what I have on my system where I build unattended:

falko:~$ apt-show-versions |grep "\-dev"
libc6-dev/stable uptodate 2.3.2.ds1-22sarge3
dpkg-dev/stable uptodate 1.10.28
libexpat1-dev/stable uptodate 1.95.8-3
uuid-dev/stable uptodate 1.2-1.37-2sarge1
libdb2-dev/stable uptodate 2:2.7.7.0-9
zlib1g-dev/stable uptodate 1:1.2.2-4.sarge.2
libncurses5-dev/stable uptodate 5.4-4
libssl-dev/stable uptodate 0.9.7e-3sarge1
libstdc++5-3.3-dev/stable uptodate 1:3.3.5-13

Hope this helps

Looks like the problem was version of glibc. Altered Makefile to version 2.3.6
and didn't have the error above. But as s pity, I ran into an error during
compilation of busybox.
After some research it looks like, that there's a problem with my gcc4. I just
started all over on another system with gcc3, I'll let you know, if this did
the trick if this is wanted.

No, it should be created in ../install/linuxaux from the linuxboot directory.

OK, these won't boot. Initrd and bzImage seem to get rather small and when
booting via PXE, not root-fs is found.

bzImage and initrd residing in "tftpboot" after "make tftpboot" should be what
I need, shouldn't they?

I used the sed-command from the wiki, but this resulted in an empty

I'll try it again with vi-replacement
