Penn wants to dump Wendell Lewis in preperation for another pushto establish Penntaxation authority, BID. They want a new perky face to appeal to the homeowner gangs. The recession and budget cuts create the perfect circumstances to use fear mongering upon selfish and unprincipled "anointed" leaders. (Penn appeals to the civic gangs for BID supportby promising that homeowners won't be taxed initially, only greedy landlords.)
Wendell Lewis's gag order certainly has him leaving under mysterious circumstances while voicing support for BID.
After this usualdelay when Penn temporarily backs off its powerplay, we should expect that the BID will be portrayed as enormously popular. The minimum objection period and minimum publicdisclosure will be attempted since Wendell Lewis has already "educated" the neighborhood about thedistrict consumers dependence on UCD and BID.
Paul Levy explained that Penn has been planningto tax us with BIDsince the mid '90s. They never stopped plotting.
Isuspect that they have manipulated the housing unit numbers in such a manner that they have the needed numbers under one calculation method allowed under the state law. Last time, they tried to pushBID between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The tming suggests a similar push for Thanksgiving of '09 with some perky new face promoting it..
A thoughtful post on the commoner's list,
Glenn

Apparently, some people in the area have not heard that Wendell Lewis is leaving UCD (and the neighborhood) when the current term of his contract expires in June 2009. Do you think:

He was worried that the Campus Inn would go through and lower the value of his house even more than the recession, so he thought he'd better get out while the getting was still good.
The string pullersat Penn finally realized that all the non-core activities at UCD were not only wastes of money but among the chief reasons why the organization is so unpopular and why the NID attempt failed so badly, so they decided to rebuild the organization in a "leaner, meaner" form with a real operations guy to manage "clean and safe" cost-effectively instead of an empire builder to install expensive flags on poles along Baltimore Avenue.
Wendell really wants to move back to New York and live in his condo, like he was quoted as saying in The UCReview, so his children could get the benefit of a better private school than he could find in Philadelphia.
He can make more money as a consultant (maybe team up with Omar Blaik, who undoubtedly has more work than he can handle teaching other urban universities all about the Penn Model... whether as something to follow or something to avoid is not known).
Other.
All of the above.

Now to move on to something critical - celebrating in the Bowl a doggie

Regarding new taxing initiatives, don't worry about them; Barak sees they

Absolutely! As a polytheist and Buddhist, I begin the new year on the solstice renewing my vows to struggle for world peace and forgivenessthroughout the new year.

I have already forgiven the barking cheese gang for its years of incivility and transgressions against our community. With great pity, I pray for their enlightenment and an end to their goal of censorship and oppression over others.

I truly hope that they may one day feel connected to their six billion brothers and sisters and also their neighbors in little Mantua.

May everyone on earth have a spiritual solstice free of materialism, oppression, war, and pride!

[UC] Museum researchers speak out against firings

I basically gave my whole life to discovering where humans came
from, said another researcher. What you're doing is erasing the
entire historic memory of the museum - they say they need it to
balance the budget, but maybe someone else can take a pay cut with
very low pain, like Amy Gutmann.

[UC] NBW movie as Scribe's Community Visions screening

2008-12-04 Thread Neighborhood Bike Works

Dear Friends,

As many of you know, the young people who attend the Neighborhood Bike
Works shop at 60^th and Vine Streets have been working on a video about
their program. The movie has been produced because of the amazing
Community Visions program of Scribe Video Center which gives people the
opportunity to use expert trainers and professional equipment to make a
high quality video. Over the past year, youth led by Mustafa Abdul
Rashid have worked with our two facilitators to produce the video which
will be shown on Monday. Details are shown below. We would be honored if
you and any interested members of your organizations could attend the
screening which is free of charge. The screening will also include
videos made by The Jubilee School and Shaw Middle School

If you can’t make it, please feel free to call me any time about having
a screening of the movie somewhere else. We are always open to
suggestions about where to show the movie.

Thank you for your interest in NBW,

Yours sincerely,

Andrew Dyson
