Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Specifying a directory in Ubuntu

2007-07-09 Thread daveaphillips

Thank you so much all,

I followed the wiki with no problems, everything worked exactly as
described. It's so nice to know a complete Ubuntu novice can follow
your guides and get results.

Couldn't have done it without your help!!

Cheers,

Dave

Since you are running Ubuntu however, I suggest you edit your
/etc/fstab file with gedit, which should already be installed:

In Kubuntu I edit the fstab or other root owned files by highlighting
the file and then right click, Actions, edit as root.

Ubuntu might be the same.

Nice, but Ubuntu 6.10 LTS (at least) doesn't offer that in its file
browser. :-(

I've updated the wiki to suggest gedit; no references to vi now.

[SlimDevices: Unix] Specifying a directory in Ubuntu

2007-07-05 Thread daveaphillips

Sorry to be a pain, but I've decided to try out ubuntu for the first
time (I've only used windows before) and need a little bit of help.
I've got slim server installed and running fine (6.5.2 i think) on
7.04, but because I'm new to the OS I'm not sure how the directory
paths work... My music is on a USB HDD that I can open and play in the
media player, but I don;t know how to add the path in SS settings so
slim server can scan my library. Can anyone help?

Cheers,

Dave

Try /media/USB or something (don't have Ubuntu to test with). Verify with
your file manager (Nautilus) to be sure.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Specifying a directory in Ubuntu

2007-07-05 Thread NigelC

Hi Dave
I'm in exactly the same position- Im trying Ubuntu for the first time,
after years of Windows. Ive downloaded Slimserver 6.5.3, which is
running (I can see the web interface). I can't persuade SS to scan my
files, wich are located on an external USB drive. The first problem was
getting the case correct, /media/My Book is not the same as /media/my
book

Having fixed that, and checked the SS logs , there is now an access
permissions issue.

Anyone know how to give SS the right permissions?

Regards
Nigel

For permissions issues, you'd need to change the access using the chmod
command. There's probably a way to do this through the Gnome
environment but I am not familiar with that.

Nigel (and others!!)

Have managed to find the USB drive, thanks for the pointer, but it
won't let me specify a directory on the HDD, regardless of
case-sensitive attempts... I am scanning my library now - fingers
crossed!!

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Specifying a directory in Ubuntu

2007-07-05 Thread mudlark

I would guess that mounting the usb drive to a directory within your
login will do the job. If you create the directory in your desktop then
mount the usb to that directory i think that will have the permissions
OK.

If not then chmod command will do the job on the usb directory.such as

sudo chmod 777 /media/store/

With the above a secondary hdd is mounted as store. In my machine this
is an internal sata HDD.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Specifying a directory in Ubuntu

2007-07-05 Thread Ron F .

davephillips,

I think you want to change how Ubuntu is mounting the drive - I assume
you are going to leave the drive attached permanently? If so, then you
want to edit your fstab file.

The problem is that Ubuntu is mounting the files with a umask of 077,
and so the files are not visible by the Slimserver daemon. If you
dismount the drive, using the umount command, and remount using
something like:
mount /dev/sdf1 /media/disk -t vfat -o
rw,nosuid,nodev,shortname=mixed,uid=1000,utf8=true,umask=000

If you use a uid of 1000, then the disk will mount as if it is owned by
the account you logged in as at the console. Otherwise, the files should
show as being owned by root.

Either way you will be able to set your music directory in Slimserver,
and scan it.

The ultimate solution of course is to edit your fstab file to mount the
file system properly everytime Ubuntu boots up. An fstab entry would
look something like:
/dev/sdf1 /media/disk vfat defaults,utf8,umask=000,gid=46 0 1

I hope this helps.

I've just created a wiki page for this -- please edit as you feel
appropriate. Caveat: I'm a long-time Linux user, but don't use an
external drive like this on my SlimServer system.

davephillips,

The new wiki page that peterw created explains what you need to do
quite well. Since you are running Ubuntu however, I suggest you edit
your /etc/fstab file with gedit, which should already be installed:
sudo gedit /etc/fstab

Vi would be a nasty introduction to Linux or Unix:)
