I'm just about to implement this in our new app.

I was only checking on init and some other navigation points in the app, but
it's clear now we have to check *everytime* we call the server. because, as you
say, use can walk from his desk (wifi) to outside (drop to bad 3G) and then out
into the open (suddenly gets 3 bars LTE) and the to the café (back up with 5
bar wifi)

all in a 10 minute walk!

how do you "see if…( it is) fast enough"

is the assumption that if you get something in under 2000 milliseconds than
things should work OK, or are you tracking some packet stream?

Also why not just put a text file on the server

https://www.mydomain.com/ping.text

with the word "true"

Apple does this this… but their little static page just has the word "success"
returned.

does your script give some advantage?

I think the answer is "it will stop you getting a tsnet error (6)".
That doesn't mean it will "fix" it. Most likely (as others have said in
more detail), it's a result of flaky or intermittent network connection
somewhere, making your DNS lookups fail incompletely. Using a static IP
will simply mean that no DNS lookup is needed - so your attempt to
transfer data will get started and likely fail in some other way because
of that flaky connection.

How (whether) that shows itself to the user is unpredictable :-)

That's a problem, the app needs to be dead reliable. But see my other
note about https connections. Those appear to have something to do with
the problem, but my tester won't get back to the coffee house for a
couple of days to find out for sure.

Of course they run also as standalone on Raspi 2B+/3.
Simply compile one of these on Mac/Win/linux and run them on Raspi ...

I also made an app "ImageJIT" that uses LC as a GUI and does most of
its work with Luajit via shell. Runs faster as image processing with
pure LC Script from IDE on a 3 GHZ linux box!

There are none of them because you can't upload them.
Only .rev stacks.

I still don't understand why the 'include' and 'require' commands are

So buy the cheaper one, and save $140.99

It almost looks like StarTech bought the Plugable one,
put it’s own paintwork on it, and is reselling it at a much
higher price to make it look like a better quality product. LOL

this more useful. If I was sure enough about them, I'd just add as

then put in requests based on, or incorporating, any suggestions.

A. Currently the top level taxonomy is
Stack vs External (there are none of them) or Code sample.

That's a detail :-) I think it should be something more like

1. Example of how to use some LC feature
2. Library of useful code
3. Sample to use/show off a library in cat 2 above.
4. Useful or interesting or fun app

B. I've downloaded and used a number of useful sample stacks, and always
found it a bit of a drag dealing with the binary stack format, and then
the 'unraveling' of that to extract just the library or part that I
want. So first I'd encourage anyone offering something that (even
vaguely) resembles a library to put it into a script-only stack, and
then make a *separate* sample to show how it can be used.

C. I'd like a recommendation / convention that such samples
(at least libraries) should be explicit-variable-safe.

D. I'd like to see a better standardisation / convention on documenting
libraries and parameters. Doesn't need to be required - but if there was
a single suggested or recommended format (and perhaps associated tools)
then it would probably be an easy choice. [I do vaguely remember
something called 'revdocs' (?) - maybe from Andre - but Google couldn't
find it for me when I was looking for it. ]

E. I'd suggest a standardised, predictable naming format such that these
sample can be downloaded directly. In particular, I'd like to be able to
say in my sample stack (type 3 above), something like

   start using stack URL
(http://livecodeshare.runrev.com//mylib.livecodescript;)

so it's easy to use the sample stacks.

Though what I really want is :

F. Maybe even better if there were an automatic way to "require"
libraries, have them downloaded if needed to somewhere like ~/My
LIvecode/SampleLibraries/, etc.

G. Both the in-IDE and web version should have *much* less dependency on
screentshots. I want an efficient list of sample stacks and libraries,
not a slow-loading set of tiny pitcures that give me little idea of
whether or not it's useful or interesting to me. We don't all have fast
broadband all the time.

H. Fix the "Search" box in the IDE. I don't know what it searches - If
you select "ImageData", you get 8 results. If you then search for
"Image" you get 7 results (but not in the same order as the 8 were
before the search??). If you search for "imag" you get none. And in any
case, why is it a "type and click go" search rather than a "search as
you type" ? And - should it not "empty" the search filter when you
change category ?

I. Fix the Categories.
  Example and Examples ?
  Awesome ??
And are they in any particular order ? Or searchable ? Or could they
be grouped somehow ?

J. Rules for Tags. e.g. one sample is tagged "Android" - but the text
simply says "Not yet tested on Android - if you test it and it works,
please let me know).

OK - almost enough ranting for a Friday evening :-) One last
contentious one.

K. 'LC Approved' category or status.
It would be nice if there were some level or kind of "approved" status,
so that you could have high(er) expectations of quality, usefulness, etc.

When I did a lot of VB work in late 90s and early 2000s there was a site

They had full sample utilities and event just small 20-100 line code
examples. Plus they had a great way of searching, presenting and
commenting on the code. They even have a contest who contributed the best
code and it was voted on by the community.

If we want to grow our community we need something like this. LiveCode just
does not have sufficient examples for people starting out. So they quit.

Sounds great Todd, looking forward to seeing the release.

Re sharing stacks/code.

The LiveCode IDE has Sample Stacks available from Help>Sample Stacks this is
also available in a more limited way from the LiveCode website
http://livecodeshare.runrev.com/ found via https://livecode.com/resources/
and then Sample Stacks.

There is via the IDE version the option to add stacks and code snippets. The
latter is very under utilized.

The whole User Samples or is it LiveCode Share needs an overhaul. For
example in the code snippets the code is not displayed but has to be
downloaded to be viewed.

The User Samples is a great resource (if you know how to find it) but is
needing some TLC.

The question of where sample stacks and code snippets comes up every now and
again with various promoted solutions, but why not use the facility we have.
I am just about to add some enhancement requests to the quality center on
this subject and I will add the numbers here when completed.

J,

I have run into many network issues on mobile. The chance that the user
might have a weak cell/wifi signal, move from cellular==>wifi or
wifi==>cellular is higher than one would think. This would be my first
guess. I always ask the user if Safari/Chrome is serving up pages. 99% of
the time network funnies are caused by weak/changing network access. The
amount of error checking and combinations thereof has been very challenging.
The first thing I do before any network access is to ping my server with a
https request to a LC backend server script that returns "OK". I set the
timeout for 2 seconds. If the returned data is not "OK" or take more than 2
seconds then I put the app into off-line mode. I try to ping the server
every time the users does "x" or the user's action again need network access
and see if the network is back online or fast enough.

I think there needs to be a single common place for this, and it needs

Having the official blessing of the mothership on this would also go a

Re: TSNet error 6

2017-09-01 Thread Bob Sneidar via use-livecode
That is a DNS error. If referring to a host, you can use the NetBIOS name
locally, the FQDN locally or remotely, or the IP number (which might change so
that is always a bad idea).

Now if the host name is NetBIOS, a number of things can go wrong in a
non-domain environment. With a domain server acting as your local DNS, it will
resolve NetBIOS names to their FQDN equivalents via the WINS service. Barring
that, NetBIOS name resolution falls back on an election process, where some
windows computer is elected as the Master Browser, which is then responsible
for tracing all devices on the network and their current IP addresses.

If it happens to be a regular workstation, and it is set to go to sleep after a
certain amount of time, well another device has to become the master browser,
and it won't know about the server in question until it requests the current
master browser and it might not do that for some time. See the problem?

So there are a couple ways around that. First you can configure the local
router with a static DNS entry, and make sure the primary DNS server listed is
that router. Alternately you can edit the hosts file on each workstatino and
make a static entry there. The latter is probably going to be the most
reliable, but starting with windows 7 I think that file is locked, so it
requires elevated privileges.

Sucks huh? The best thing is to have a real DNS server locally (every router
these days does this but not everyone configures their routers correctly) and
then via the command line you *should* be able to register with the DNS server,
but I'm not sure how.

Hope that is not too much.

When I did a lot of VB work in late 90s and early 2000s there was a site
Planet Source Code:

They had full sample utilities and event just small 20-100 line code

commenting on the code. They even have a contest who contributed the best
code and it was voted on by the community.

If we want to grow our community we need something like this. LiveCode just

who, cook? I know. I was screaming about it when Jobs was still alive,
and all he's done is prove me right.
Yes on SSD's - we don't order anything without them. They make such a
gigantic difference in a machine's lifespan, and seem to improve
performance much more than a stronger processor or memory. This 2011 MBA
is a perfect example of that, but that's also why I'm sort-of ambivalent
about replacing it. Most of the work I do developing is editing code, not
doing layouts (which is part of the reason why Levure is so interesting
- layouts tend to be fairly static, at least compared to code).
The question on screen real estate was more to do with retina vs non. If a
13" MBP with a retina screen doesn't give me a lot of extra working room
vs. a 13" MBA then that is less attractive. I think I've ruled out the MB
because it only comes with a 12" screen, which I'm betting won't help me
UNLESS I also get a 13" ipad pro and use airDisplay to use it as a second,
portable monitor.
I'm one of those "gaming is for consoles" people, so I don't game on my
computers.

I would recommend that you buy the latest model of the MacBook so that
you then have to go and spend lots more money on peripherals . . .

Recently I took my MacBook Pro (cast-off of one of my sons) to Britain
to visit my Mum and Dad,
and the thing "developed" a self-assigned IP address, further
complicated that its internal WiFi does not
work (one of several reasons why my younger boy checked it at me) and
was working with a USB WiFi dongle.

As it has an ethernet port I just jacked it into M's modem with a LAN
cable . . .

Apple are doing a fine job painting themselves into an expensive corner;
bijoux toys methinks.

With NO standard ports Apple are selling something that will be useless
just as soon as something fails

(I'm booting off an external USB disk as the internal SATA connexion is
dead)

so, having spent your thousands of dollars you'll have to start saving
right away for its replacement.

This IS the voice of personal experience speaking: having just saved a
serviceable laptop from the trash BECAUSE

it has 2 standard USB ports.

Tim Cook needs a lot of people to shout "Universal System Bus" at him!

Not sure about an advantage, but I will say that apps need to be retina aware.
Parallels for instance changed the scale of things inside Windows. The GPU
essentially has 4 times the work to do. You need to upgrade to resolve that
issue.

> Do I get more working space if I don't go to a 15" display?

This doesn't make sense. Is your old screen bigger/smaller? It's not much more
real estate over a 13" anyway that would make you go "WOW!"

The speed gain is the SSD drive. More memory helps especially for having lots
of processes running simultaneously. And if you are building fairly large apps,
I do notice a speed gain when creating standalones. And don't rule out gaming!
:-)

How often do you use your Air away from home? Can you see yourself doing
without it, maybe using a mobile device instead? If so, then obviously the iMac
is going to be the better choice *IF* it has an SSD drive. I have an SSD in my
laptop for work, and a 27" iMac at home. Once you are used to the SSD

Re: Does exporting a snapshot from a rect work on mobile?

2017-09-01 Thread Jonathan Lynch via use-livecode
KeyboardActivated is working. However, getting the effective working screenrect
is not producing a result different from the screenrect, meaning it does reveal
the available space after the keyboard pops up.

Re: Does exporting a snapshot from a rect work on mobile?

2017-09-01 Thread Roger Eller via use-livecode
Well, since the bug report indicates that keyboardActivated/keyboardDeactivated
messages were added to Android, if they are not working please report it.
If you want to just use a general rule for a 'safe zone', then prompting at
the top of the screen should work fine.

Re: Does exporting a snapshot from a rect work on mobile?

2017-09-01 Thread Jonathan Lynch via use-livecode
Hi Roger - yup, this problem affects other development environments too. Many
have complained about it online. I currently force the input into the top half
of the screen. Do you think I should force it even higher?

I could just make the input go to the very top when a user enters it.

 I tried the follow script:

 on mouseUp

 create field "test height"

 select after field "test height"

send getEWSR to me in 1 second

 end mouseUp

 on getEWSR

 answer the effective working screenrect

 delete field "test height"

 end getEWSR

it still returns the same screenrect that I get without using "effect
working", which is the screenrect of the device.

 Any other ideas?

Re: Does exporting a snapshot from a rect work on mobile?

2017-09-01 Thread Roger Eller via use-livecode
This appears to be an old problem (2012). I don't know if there was ever a
solution. A best practice was to position any input fields in the top
third of the screen. I agree with the consensus that it should be handled
automatically, but it is not, obviously.

Re: Does exporting a snapshot from a rect work on mobile?

2017-09-01 Thread Jonathan Lynch via use-livecode
Hi Jacqueline,

Sadly, that did not help. It received the KeyboardActivated message, and I had
it check the effective working screenrect both at that point and again in a
handler set to trigger a second later. They all return results as if the
keyboard is not there.

This is on a galaxy tab E, with the OS from 2015, so it might just be that this
tablet is not very good. However, I need the app to work on most android
devices.

When I get a more powerful machine, I might test a few of these things again. I
can make it do different things depending whether a particular OS resource is
available.

Thanks!

J

Hi Todd,

I share on LiveCode share and a few things on the forum. Will that do?

They are not organized like Git Hub, but easy enough for my needs.

Subject: Re: LC and OneSignal

2017-09-01 Thread Todd Fabacher via use-livecode
Hello LiveCoders,

Good News!!! The team of Digital Pomegranate did a project with onesignal push
notification last year. We are actually in the progress of upgrading the
lib now. So if someone is interested in it, please contact me and I will
make arrangements to get you a version.

Also as an added side note. We are upgrading our WordPress Rest API to
tsNet for Async communications and upgrading to the new WP + Woo Commerce
changes.

We are looking to put all of the work we do in LiveCode on the internet.
Most will be open source [as much as we can because some we have NDAs on
and we can release code] and we are thinking that we can put in a section
on our website. But LiveCode could use the LiveCode.org to create a
section that lists open source projects and where to download the code.

There needs to be a better way for all of us to share projects and
code snippets.
Any suggestions We can build and host something if there is a good
idea. For all of our benefits, we should grow the community by 10,000. They
will take efforts from EVERYONE.
