I don't see the problem as relating to machines that LiveCode might be 
deployed on, but as machines for which 32-bit

standalones might be authored.

My highly theoretical scenario runs a bit likes this;

A number of schools in what are coyly called "third world countries" 
running old machines for content delivery; either in

schools or in, say, government offices.

An author of software for this scenario might have a 64-bit machine, but 
would need the ability to export for the target market.


As there are very many fully-functional 32-bit machines (whether Macs or 
IBM-compats) "out there" (and by "out there"
I mean outwith the slightly smug, self-satisfied circle of charmed 
countries quite incorrectly termed "Western" - Australia, western? -)
that are being put to good purpose rather than clogging up landfills and 
shafting the planet, this scenario does not seem

totally daft to me.

Admittedly, authors could use earlier versions of LiveCode that do 
produce 32-bit standalones to deliver the goods
(I still use 4.5 for stuff I run on a couple of PPC Macs), but, 
obviously, this cuts them off from new capabilities that will be built 
into newer

versions.

Far better to have BOTH possibilities checked as default.

Only if there existed a Mac which can run LiveCode but cannot run 64-bit apps - 
which is the case for LiveCode 9.x as it supports 10.9+.

Indeed it would be far better to have no possibility at all (simpler) - just 
build for 64-bit since...

64-bit support has been around since 10.6, at that time there were machines 
which could run 10.6 which were 32-bit only.

However, all macs which will run 10.7 will run 64-bit apps.

Therefore, if LiveCode only supports 10.7 and above, then LiveCode and any apps 
you build with it need only be 64-bit.

OT: Has anybody experiences with apps for VPP licenses?

Hello, I don't find adhoc the answers for my questions at apple, so I want
to ask you, if anybody has experiences, what it means to offer an app for
VPP licenses in the iOS appStore? I have an app offered in the appstore with
inApp purchases, but inApp purchases are not allowed for the VPP program, so
I have to make a second version of my same app with all inApp features
included, which I want to offer for public schools. There are a lot of
informations for customers, what they have to do to get VPP licenses, but I
don't find anything about what the developer has to do to offer VPP
licenses, perhaps it is much more easy, as I think. Perhaps I even don't
have to do anything else as for a "normal app".

Do I have to prepare or mark an app as available for VPP or is every app per
se available for VPP?

Do I have any control over the VPP discounts, or is that fixed by apple and
I just set the price per 1, as for a "normal app"?

Do I upload the "VPP app" to the appstore the same way, as a "normal app" or
is there a separate "VPP store"?

Are there any other differences or pitfalls with VPP?

If those acronyms are used in promotional materials it may be helpful to 
define them.


Most style guides suggest using the full form once, following by the 
acronym in parentheses, after which the acronym thus defined can be used 
freely.


E.g.:

   This session will discuss powerful techniques in
   LiveCode Script (LCS).  By using behaviors and
   other methods, LCS allows the scripter to define
   rich classes of objects.

In my reading of Mark's comment, it doesn't seem that's going away, 
merely tha 64-bit-only builds will become the default:


   At the very least, we'll certainly be switching the IDE to 64-bit
   (by default) and make the SB build 64-bit only (by default) in 9+.

Hmmm - we're probably heading off into the weeds here 

The script-only stack is used as a behaviour for controls within another 
stack - so it can copt hose controls without them bieng binary objects 
within the scrip-only stack.


OR

The script-only stack creates a set of objects the first time it is used 
(creating the template group).
Subsequent uses of the script (in the same context) will (at most) copy 
that template group - so yes they are being created - but with minimal 
work because it's doing a copy rather than  "create and then set lots of 
properties".


So not quite as much saving in the second case - but still less work 
than creating and setting lots of properties for the controls.

Strictly speaking your question was (essentially) "So you don't believe 
in backwards compatibility then?" and then segued into a repeat about 
your usage of PowerPC based Macs... May I suggest you make your 
questions a little clearer (and perhaps less perjorative ;)) then you 
might actually get answers to what you actually meant to ask, instead of 
what it sounded like you asked.


In terms of upping the minimum version requirement for 9.0 to 10.9 then 
using this as reference:

Intel Macs fall into four categories:

   - Those which can only run up to 10.6

   - Those which can only run up to 10.7

   - Those which can only run up to 10.11

   - Those which can run current Mac versions

Continuing to support 10.6 and 10.7 is *extremely* difficult due to both 
Cocoa APIs and C++ support. Indeed, continuing to do so would mean two 
things:


  1) Leveraging new APIs on the Mac platform would be much harder, 
meaning that will happen even slower than it has done up until now.


  2) We can't use newer versions of the C++ standard which not only 
makes writing code for the engine harder, but also means that the 
chances of bugs and vulnerabilities increase (because new methods of 
writing C++ which are available in C++11 allow you to do so in much 
'safer' ways). Basically more regressions, more bugs, slower evolution.


I'd also point out (again) that we are talking about machines which are 
now > 10 years old (the last Mac which can only run up to 10.7 was 
released in 2007).


Furthermore, as people have reiterated several times, those OSes are not 
supported by Apple and are hugely insecure in the modern climate. Whilst 
I get what you are saying about 'reusing old hardware' it does seems a 
bit 'off' for 'us' to be palming off old machines onto 'developing' 
countries which we wouldn't use ourselves for those very reasons.


Richard's repeated suggestion that such machines should be 'Linux-ised' 
still always was and continues to be an excellent suggestion. Remember 
that as as time goes by the amount of up to date software which *can* 
run on them will dwindle to nothing - for the same reason as we have had 
to look long and hard at our platform support and make changes.


All Macs which can run 10.8 can also run 10.9 - which is the new minimum 
version for 9. So, yes, there is a set of Intel Macs released between 
2005 and 2007 which will not be able to run 9; but the number of Macs 
which fall outside of this group is many many times larger and will, of 
course, continue to grow year on year.

livecode connect framework

hey everyone, I just learned about the livecode connect framework . it
sounds great... my question is whether there is any chance on god's
green earth that the framework is also for the community version? i have
next to no hope for that, unless they dual license it, which they don't do
as far as i know.

Thanks.  Glad to find there isn't some mysterious wormhole I'd never 
conceived of in which a script-only stack can contain things beyond a 
script.


But also disappointed. There are a few cases where such a thing may be 
useful.


I'll leave wormholes to theoretical physics, and just stick to my 
script-only stacks and NIB-like UI stacks for now.

There's another aspect of this worth considering as well:

One of the things Richmond noted, which we've all experienced, is that 
as GUI apps and OSes evolve their hardware requirement grow along with 
them.  Over enough time, GUIs can become sluggish.


These days much of the computing we use is done on servers, machines 
that have no GUI constraints since they need no GUI at all.


I've been meeting a lot of educators here in CA who've had great success 
teaching server admin and even security skills to learners at the high 
school level, and sometimes even in middle school.


Given that the role of servers is expected to only increase, and that 
networking in general is now a ubiquitous part of most app development, 
teaching these sorts of skills will only become ever more important 
going forward.


Right now Linux sys admin positions are plentiful and pay well.

And those with security certifications can earn six figures by their 
second year out of school.  Right now there are some 300,000 infosec 
jobs for US SMBs alone that can't be filled because of a shortage of 
qualified candidates.  We need more white hats in the field.


One of my friends organized a "capture the flag" competition at the 
SoCal Linux Expo, and we see similar infosec exercises becoming popular 
in a wide range of EDU contexts.


Best of all, these don't require great hardware.  Unencumbered by GUI 
requirements, servers really don't need much CPU power at all, and can 
operate with a fraction of the RAM modern GUIs need.


For older machines, server applications can make an ideal role for 
extending the useful life of older machines.


The cloud will only become an ever more pervasive part of our computing 
world, and nearly all of the best software needed to learn and create 
cloud systems is entirely free and open.


Server admin may not be for all learners, but for the "Computer Club" 
types it's a natural extension to also learning client-side development.

thanks. Believe me, i would do it for installation by myself if i would know 
how to do it.;)


Another thing i noticed is that i cannot save the stack when the widget is 
placed onto the stack.
I get the following error message:
“Can´t save stack … due to an error: Error writing stack (disk full?)"

I have over 2 TB space left on the disk and i have no problems with any other 
widget. Just with yours. Is there something i am missing?

At times, I wonder about what would happened if I asked SuperCard for an
upgrade . . . to my version 1.5 disks . . .

And if SuperCard had leaked that the PC version was coming, I wouldn't have
abandoned my project 25 years ago, and would probably be the largest player

Apologies, I did not try to save a stack with the widget. Should have done 
that, I see the same error in DP6 and 8.1.4 and 8.1.2

But I can not find what I did wrong in onSave. Still searching.

Check that all the vars which are saved into the props array have been 
assigned, and that the getRadiusAndCenterPoint() can't throw an error in 
that case.


I can't see anything wrong with your code either. File a bug if you 
don't get very far and I'll take a look on Monday to see what's going on 
in the engine :)

Authentication is a key part of using web services, so I can safely say it will 
be touched upon.

If you can go into a bit more detail about what you'd like to know I can chat 
to Michael about potentially including something on that topic in his database 
/ cloud series of talks - he might have more time to cover oauth specifically. 
(He also knows much more about it than I do - which helps!).

For others hunting for this here's the description:

Web-based APIs using the REST model have become the lingua-franca
for interacting with cloud-based services and the web – indeed, all
the most popular services we use today use this modal, including
Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google and Amazon Web Services.

In this talk Mark will be introducing ‘LiveCode Connect’. A new tool
which allows almost immediate access to any web API which has joined
the army of services moving to an abstract description of themselves
based on the emerging OpenAPI standard.

He will show how the tool takes the hard work out of interacting
with popular web platforms; allowing them to be accessed via simple
commands and functions in a safe, correct and reliable way.

This new LiveCode feature will be made available to all attendees
free.

Sounds very exciting, a great way for LC to show its stuff against JS 
and Python based tools.


Since "all attendees" includes many who use the GPL-governed Community 
Edition, I'm assuming any distributable libraries or code will be 
dual-licensed, yes?

if the only hint is that its available to all attendees of the conference,
we can't be sure i guess we will find out...what a great feature for LC
and its bright future.  In a way i am indifferent, since I can build my own
handlers to talk to any api i want and i do want livecode inc to
prosper ALOT, so if they decide its a non-community feature thats ok with
me.

Bernd,
The problem with your OnSave / OnLoad handlers are that Point and Color are
types defined in the canvas module that the array-saving code does not know
about. These need to be converted to a core type, eg string or list.

thanks Mark for looking into this.

The problem was that onSave did not appreciate saving a variable of type Color, 
I had to do string conversions. Then it works.

The problem with saving has been solved and a new version of the Gauge widget 
has been uploaded to the edited first post.

this version also adds a SVG icon to the widget.

I had this issue a while back and Ali set me 
right:

“You can’t serialise a non-primitive type in your OnSave code. If you try to 
put a canvas type (for example Color) in the properties array, there will be 
issues when saving. You need to convert to String beforehand.”

I bought my first CD drive when apple started shipping on them instead of
floppies.  $700, less 50% for being a developer, iirc.

And I think it was more like half-speed than single-speed.

I don't recall if it was on the floppies, but I'm pretty sure I gave up or
reuused those decades ago . . .

Back then, it was $600 year to be a developer, but they probably paid close
to that in printing, pressing, and shipping.
