Re: On-Rev File Browser Upload Dialog

Hi Jim,

All I meant was that RevServer is the relatively new kid
on the block, and I had hoped that it had the capability
within it without relying on externals code such as
java-script to get the job done in an easier way.

I understand that it is bound by browser protocols, and
that it needs to operate in accordance with the standards.

I am not sure what you mean by 'older solutions'.
RevServer is bound by the features and functions of browsers and the
standards that they follow. The newest standards are HTML5, CSS3, etc. This
is how browsers operate. Microsoft has done the experiment of deviating from
such standards, teaching us that this is not a good long term strategy.

On the desktop app/exe side, programmers are free to create their own
protocols, interfaces, and functions. In that case, the marketplace will
 choose the 'winners'.

On-Rev File Browser Upload Dialog

2010-10-20 Thread Rick Harrison
I really don't want to re-invent the wheel today.

How can I get a simple file browser upload dialog
to upload a file using an irev script located at On-Rev.

I understand that I'll probably be using
libURLftpUploadFile for this.

If this were just a stack I'd be using:

answer file Please choose the file to upload

to generate the dialog. As I understand it, 'answer'
just doesn't work for irev scripts.

This seems like such a basic need, that I can't
imagine that no one has done this before.

If you have any example code, that would be excellent.

Thanks in advance!

Looks like it will only work with a multi-part form?

Anything solution using pure irev or that's a little more simple out there?

RevServer is not like the desktop engine, there is no GUI. Actually the
whole web is like this, you communicate using stateless transactions
exchanging what is basically text. What you do is send a form to the browser
with the correct encoding and inputs and then you decode back this form.

check out a little document on the web called HTTP made really easy to
understand more about the underlining protocol and then check out w3schools
website on HTML, CSS and Javascript.

With the clear picture in mind, check out the MVC paradigm which is the one
that maps better to RevServer with HTML/CSS/JS being the View and RevServer,
 the controller

Re: Connecting Stack to Remote On-Rev MySQL Database

Hi Sarah,

So from this I'm assuming you are talking about using
a revbrowser concept to get the information into and
out of the database from within my stack?

Will this approach slow things down?

Thanks,

Rick

Hi Michael,

Yes, I'm using MySQL on the on-rev server.

I can access it fine from an irev script.

I need to access it remotely from a stack.

 Hi Matthias,

I've already seen http://samples.on-rev.com/database.irev which only

how to open a local MySQL database not a remote one.

I am specifically looking for code examples, not the

The information you provided about %.%.%.% as an ip-address

first of all you have to enable Remote Access for your

 ip-adress in Access Hosts.

 At http://samples.on-rev.com/database.irev
you find a code example how to access an MySQL database. It
is an irev example, but the sections

 #Open the database connection
 #Construct the SQL Statement
 #Close the database connection

Open Database On-Rev Examples?

2010-01-26 Thread Rick Harrison
Hi there,

Does anyone have a good example of opening a MySQL database on On-Rev
using a Rev stack on a local machine?

I've looked at the documentation thus far, and found it to not be adequate.

I just keep getting the following message, which I believe is telling me
that it just didn't connect at all in the first place.

Lost connection MySQL server during query

I don't know if this a password permissions problem or path problem or what.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

PostgreSQL/On-Rev Database Tables

2010-01-09 Thread Rick Harrison
Hi there,

I created PostgreSQL database on On-Rev
using the PostgreSQL Database Wizard which seemed
to work fine.

Then I was trying to use phpPgAdmin to create tables
for the database. It told me that I couldn't do it because
I wasn't a SuperUser which to me seemed crazy because
I was logged in as the user who created the database in the first place.

Does anyone have any ideas or has anyone ever done this
successfully on On-Rev?

I've also noticed that documentation on how to do these
things is lacking. Suggestions?

Good luck with your revisions, and remember that you can't

I imagine PostgreSQL works fine if you connect from localhost. Does the

Usually a database won't allow a user to connect from a remote server without
you explicitly telling the database to allow them to do so.

So the question still remains: Has anyone out there

I haven't tried, but if you are having trouble then I would check whether or
not you authorized the user you are connecting with to connect from outside
hosts. By default the database user is usually restricted to connecting from
localhost only (at least with MySQL).

Re: about Rev cgi and MySQL

2009-11-03 Thread Rick Harrison

Hi,

There are some other compromising approaches to consider as well.

Don't have the record open long at all in your processing.
If it is a form, don't use the database field for your entry, use
a variable for the entry, so the record isn't actually open.
Once the user actually submits the information, then open
your record, copy the information from the variables into
the record, and perform your update. In this way you will
use the least amount of time for your record locking technique.

Use a record locking strategy where you can use a
Date/Time stamp along with a session ID, or IP-Address,
when the record was opened for updating.
If the record isn't updated within a specified amount of time,
let it time out, send a message to the user that the update
timed out, and direct them to do it over. Close the record
so someone else can update it.

If someone else is trying to update the same record at the same
time, have the program wait for a couple of seconds and try
the update again. (You can loop this for several tries before
giving up. If it still fails at this point you can send that user a
record busy message, ask them to wait, or ask them to try
again in a minute, or to cancel their update for later.)

I hope this helps!

Rick

On Nov 3, 2009, at 8:28 AM, Jan Schenkel wrote:

This problem isn't unique to cgi-scripting - you have the same
issues with a desktop application where concurrent updates need to
be handled.

There are 3 approaches to concurrent changes:
- pessimistic locking (no one can change the record while somebody
has it locked)
- optimistic locking (essentially no locking, whoever makes the last
update wins)
- optimistic locking + versioning (again no locking, byut we use a
version number to see if anyone else made a change)

...
Hope this helped,

Re: Full screen?

2009-09-20 Thread Rick Harrison

Hi Arthur,

Use the screenRect function to find out the available screen sizes and
to scale windows to the size of the screen.

Examples from the dictionary:
the screenRect
set the rect of this stack to line 2 of the working screenRects

I also found:

Use the revChangeWindowSize command to change the size of a stack
while leaving its top left corner in place, with optional animation
effects.

Examples:

revChangeWindowSize 100,120
revChangeWindowSize the width of stack Template,200,slide
revChangeWindowSize myWidth,myHeight,snap,1 -- displays card 1
revChangeWindowSize 200,250,slide,,500 -- slides over 1/2 second

And the following I also found to be very interesting:

Use the systemWindow property to create a stack that can be used as a
systemwide utility, available in all applications.

Value:
The systemWindow property of a stack is true or false. By default, the
systemWindow of a newly created stack is set to false.

The systemWindow property makes a window float above all running
applications.

Examples:
set the systemWindow of stack Magnifier to true
set the systemWindow of the target to false

I hope this helps!

Re: [ANN] Stacks published on the Web

2009-08-02 Thread Rick Harrison

Hi there,

I think this problem is a huge mess! I found myself
feeling really paranoid about trying the stacks due
to the nasty sounding dialogs.

There has to be a better solution or people will not
adopt using the plug-in.

Just my 2 cents.

I have to agree that the generic warning is a little too scary to

An example of too many dialogs preventing adoption is Shockwave.
Even with 60% of people having Shockwave installed, clients tend not
to want to use it because installing the plugin has opt-out add-ons,
and if you access content on another valid site for the same
company, Shockwave would show that security dialog. With the latest
Shockwave version you can now check the crossdomain.xml policy file,
and so at last can get around that issue for using content on
another one of the client's sites.

Flash security is extremely tough and limiting, and manages to do
all that without having to bother the user with permission dialogs.
About 15 years of effort has gone into the thinking behind how
Shockwave and Flash security is handled, so there is a chance that
some of what they have done is a good way to work.

So, Rev stacks online for your relatives to see your work is fine,
but for real large client work it won't succeed if every user that
uses the piece has to cope with security and permissions dialogs,
because clients will tell you to use Flash instead.

Timed User Input

To work correctly the timer should still be

Perhaps if you captured the IP address at your end,

Re: On-Rev Signup

2009-05-18 Thread Rick Harrison

Hi Guys,

So, I take it that the On-Rev servers are located in the UK?

What about the delay going from the U.S. and back?
What's the latency?

I run my own servers already, and I'd like to put together
my own Rev Server too. Should I wait for version 4.0
of Rev to do this so that the bugs are out of the system,
and there are good instructions available?

Thank you for your thoughts.

Re: Sucking the Marrow from Macintosh Apps

2009-01-23 Thread Rick Harrison

Hi there,

You realize of course that sucking resources from any application
that isn't yours, and for which you do not have permission to take
such resources to claim for your own, is a violation of copyright law,
and usually is also a violation of the software license agreement for
that application.

It is always best, and safest to create your own content. Then one
is never at risk for any lawsuits whatsoever. Or, get permission
in writing from the owners of the software to use those resources.

If someone were sucking resources from your software application
which you worked very hard on for many weeks to enrich themselves
at your expense, I think you would not be a happy programmer.

This is just a cautionary reminder for everyone.

Thanks,

Rick

Hi Paul,

I think you are trying to take your software too far. You won't be
able to guard
against the use of internet cell phones especially for exams which are
unsupervised.

An unsupervised exam also allows students to communicate with each other
about the test so they can still get answers even without access to
the internet.

That is why important exams are always monitored by a teacher. Your
software
will never be able to take over the important role of the Monitor in
the room.

Sometimes, teachers make exams so long that the students will not have
enough time to answer all of the questions. I once had an open book
exam
where there were so many questions that you didn't have the time to
open the
book at all. One just had to know all of the material to be able to
answer the

questions.

Have you built a timer into your exam software so that when the time
is up

the student can no longer work on it?

Good luck with your project!

Re: Who owns old icons?

2008-08-04 Thread Rick Harrison

Unless Apple, Inc. has put all of HyperCard into the public domain,
the HyperCard icons are still owned by Apple, Inc.

According to www.wikipedia.org:

The Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA) of 1998 – alternatively known
as the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act, Sonny Bono Act, or
pejoratively as the Mickey Mouse Protection Act – extended copyright
terms in the United States by 20 years. Before the Act (under the
Copyright Act of 1976), copyright would last for the life of the
author plus 50 years, or 75 years for a work of corporate authorship;
the Act extended these terms to life of the author plus 70 years and
for works of corporate authorship to 120 years after creation or 95
years after publication, whichever endpoint is earlier.[1] The Act
also affected copyright terms for copyrighted works published prior to
January 1, 1978, also increasing their term of protection by 20 years,
to a total of 95 years from publication.

Unless you can either confirm that Apple, Inc. has put
HyperCard into the public domain, or you have obtained
permission from the Apple, Inc. legal department, you
cannot do what you want with those icons.

Yes, I know it seems terrible, but if you were Apple, Inc.
I'm sure you would want to protect your under used icons too.
After all Apple might want to consider using them for some
different application in the future.

wikipedia.org has a lot more information about copyright,
and I suggest that anyone who is interested to check it out.

Why not just use a wireless USB keyboard with a wireless mouse?

They may even have remotes too.

You can always custom tailor your Revolution on screen controls to

Alternatively, you could try:

FrogPad Bluetooth Right-handed - Keyboard - wireless - Bluetooth

It takes up just 1/2 the keyboard space.

Have fun!

Re: copyright infringement question

Hi there,

It sounds to me like your company is looking for a lawsuit to come
your direction soon.

You should try to create something original, not steal someone else's
ideas,

and try to make them look like your own.

Look at your ethics first, and say to yourself; If that had been my
idea would I want
someone else to copy-cat my idea, and not give me anything for it in
return?
If you found someone infringing on your idea, would you sue to protect
your idea?

I think if you look at things this way, you will have your answer.

Just because something is out on the internet, doesn't make it free
for you to

exploit. This is why we have copyrights, and patents.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: Revolution, MySQL vs FileMaker

2006-09-28 Thread Rick Harrison

Hi there,

Postgres is FREE. MySQL is not. If you read the license
carefully this becomes very clear.

I would never recommend giving some other company
control of my company's database. You have no idea
what they might do with the information, and you
can't say for sure that you are really protecting your
customers' data or privacy.

In my opinion, If you can get Rev to work with Postgres,
that would be the best, and least expensive solution.

FileMaker is good for making quick interfaces
and for ease of use, but they keep wanting to
charge users more and more money for a product
that seems to get slower with each release. I don't
believe in companies who trick you into using their
product, and then raise the cost of using their product
once you've married yourself to them.

I'll probably get flamed for this one! lol

Re: Game Developers -- Call

2006-07-15 Thread Rick Harrison
.

I've seen a lot of shareware and small no budget projects go
completely to waste, and never earn any money to speak of. The big
bucks ones
are usually the rare exceptions. I was not referring to the subject
matter of their game at all in my comments, just candidate
expectations and pay.

Perhaps I've just seen too many examples of programmers who took a
lot of abuse from managers that they never should have in the past
and that
has colored my view of the programming world. I've met more people
in my line of work who think that programmers should just give them
hours and hours of blood, sweat, and tears without ever compensating
them properly. There are also a lot of managers that have never
programmed one line of code, but yet believe that code should just
magically appear in front of them after 2 minutes of programming time
has elapsed. They suffer from the Is it done yet? syndrome. I've
met others who think that because you work with computers, it means
that you must therefore know everything there is to know about all
computers, and all software programs that exist in the entire world.

I really believe in the hard work that programmers do with Revolution
and other computer languages. I also believe strongly that they
should be
adequately compensated for their efforts with at least fair market
value pay for their respective areas of the world. Programming
authors who have written
20 games know all about Versiontracker, Tucows, and other
distribution points for their software. They are probably so
successful at that level
that it would be highly unlikely for them to want to work on a game
which promises little pay for their efforts.

Oh, and just to state some of my other beliefs a little more clearly,
Music is not free just because one can download it and duplicate it.
Likewise software is not free just because one can download it and
duplicate it. These things are only free if the author or creator
of the work states specifically that the work is free. Otherwise,
you must pay for these creations.

Don't mistake them for amateurs, they were coding and doing
computer projects and dtp since a very long time. They may be naive
about game markets, but if they trully want to make this game, I am
sure it will reach far.

I was trying to get them to pull back on their extra high
expectations. Anyone who has 20 games out on the market with all of
the rest of the
qualifications listed will not work for them for peanuts. I was not
trying to discourage them on their project.

PS: ... the side effect of working with Monks who are also a
publishing house is that you learn much, not only talking to them
but reading them, nothing beats walking besides Sivakatirswami
listening him explaining what is karma!

On the upside, Google does provide an API for developers to use for
such purposes:

http://www.google.com/apis/

--
 Richard Gaskin

I just went to this link to check it out. You are only allowed 1000
queries per day, and the API is only for Non-Commercial use only.

Those pictures of the dogs may have their own copyright issues too.
Just because google list them doesn't mean the owners gave up their
copyright on the material.

In many cases the owners of the pictures posted may not even know that
google has indexed them, and included them in their database.

I know of people who have set up small websites to show off pictures
of their kids to Grandma, but since they didn't tell the web spiders
to not index in their meta tags or supply a robots.txt file, google
has now indexed those pictures. Those parents were not happy
when they discovered their family pictures all over google!

I suppose you might find some other search engine other than
google to do your tests with. There are tons of them out there
some of which may not have such tight controls.

Good luck!

Re: Additive Images

2005-06-24 Thread Rick Harrison

Chipp Alejandro,

Thanks so much for the quick help. I'm not sure I explained
well enough what it is that I'm looking to do.

I'm not talking about one opaque image on top of another so
that parts of the third image overlays the second, and the second
one overlays part of the first.

I'm also don't think I'm talking about blending the three images so
much either.

Let's say for example that the pixel at 20,19 on the first image is
red with a brightness
of 26, and the second image contains the same shade of red at a
brightness of 24 at
pixel 20,19, and the third image contains blue at pixel 20,19 at a
brightness of 34.

Adding the data of the first two red pixels should give me a
brightness of 50 red and
then adding in the blue pixel should make the resulting pixel
somewhat purple red
with a brightness of 84. At least that's how I'm thinking it would
work. Additive images.

I still have to look into the stacks more in depth you've provided
for me.

Thanks again!

Additive Images

2005-06-23 Thread Rick Harrison

Hi there,

I'm trying to create an overlay of three images so that it looks like
a triple exposure.
Or even possibly an unlimited amount up to the point I want to stop
adding. Probably
would use a slider control for this to adjust levels, number of
images etc.

I was thinking that Rev just might be the perfect tool for this. I
thought I'd use a video camera
to capture the images and then somehow add the value of pixels
together. Does anyone

have a clue as to how I might go about this?

This seems like a path that others may have gone down in the past
with Revolution, so I
thought perhaps one of your image processing minds might have some
good tips or pointers.

Thanks in advance!

Brian,
Ok, that makes sense.
mod_ssl is simply the Apache module (i.e. plugin). Apache SSL is a
separately maintained product, and will require a lot more work if you
aren't comfortable on the command-line. If you already have Apple's
Apache installed, you'll want to enable mod_ssl, _not_ try to replace
Apache with Apache SSL. Personally, I would use mod_ssl regardless as
it'll always work with a vanilla Apache installation.
That's good to know too.
See this quote
Apache-SSL is not mod_ssl
There appears to be some confusion regarding Apache-SSL and mod_ssl.
To set the record straight: mod_ssl is not a replacement for
Apache-SSL - it is an alternative, in the same way that Apache is an
alternative to Netscape/Microsoft servers, or Linux is an alternative
to FreeBSD. It is a matter of personal choice as to which you run.
mod_ssl is what is known as a 'split' - i.e. it was originally
derived from Apache-SSL, but has been extensively redeveloped so the
code now bears little relation to the original.

Apache-SSL continues to be developed and maintained, our main focus
being on reliability, security and performance, rather than features
and bells and whistles. I hope this makes things clear. (Adam
Laurie).
This is the exact quote I was looking at before when I was referring to
confusion about mod_ssl vs. Apache SSL.
I saw it sometime about a month and a half ago but didn't find it today
when I was looking for it.

Hope that helps- I know it doesn't solve your problem of creating a
stack, but you may have more success with the mod_ssl link that was
posted than what you were using, especially if you're not on MacOS X
Server. If it goes smoothly, you could probably hatch the shell
commands together into a Rev stack without too much trouble...

- Brian
That helps a bunch Brian, because it tells me for sure which direction
I need to proceed. Mod_ssl it is!!!

URL download and Cache problems

2004-12-15 Thread Rick Harrison
Hi there,
I'm getting some Revolution weirdness when trying to download
files from the internet.
I'm using:
put into field CachedURLSListField1 of card 1
put into field ClearedCacheList1 of card 1
put 1 into N2
repeat while N2 4
load URL field JPEGURL of card 1 with message downloadComplete
--(Which sends this message to the stack which I handle by updating a
field with Status - Download completed)

export image JpegImage of card 2 to file field ImageFileName1 of
card 1 as JPEG -- Gets entire image
put field CachedURLSListField1 of card 1 the cachedURLs into
field CachedURLSListField1 of card 1

--to list what files are in my cache
--then I supposedly delete the cache with
unload URL field JPEGURL of card 1
--and to check if the file was deleted out of the cache
put field ClearedCacheList1 of card 1 the cachedURLs into field
ClearedCacheList1 of card 1
add 1 to N2
end repeat

The problems I'm running into are the following:
1. The program doesn't wait until the first download is complete
before moving on to the second download.
2. The cache isn't getting cleared
3. It's like Revolution is executing just too fast.

If I simply put
answer N2 = N2
-- before the end repeat everything downloads - but unfortunately,
-- I have to be around to press the stupid button everytime to
-- let the program move on, and I don't want to have to do that.

Any ideas as to what is going on, and as to what I need to do to fix
things?

Thanks in advance.

Well, there is no native way to do this, but what you can do is
this...

1. Put the text you want into a fld.

3. figure out where in the imageData of the main image that you want
to insert the imageData from the snapshot.

That method will take a VERY long time as you have to parse the main
image pixel by pixel. The other method is this, but if the image is
larger than the stack then it will get cut off.

1. Put the text you want into a fld.
2. Place the fld where you want it to appear over the image.
3. Take a snapshot of the image.

Derek,
The latter method is probably the easiest.
I tried taking a snapshot after getting the rectangle
