ASF Community Survey 2022

2022-08-25 Thread Pranay Pandey
Hello everyone,

The 2022 ASF Community Survey is looking to gather scientific data that
allows us to understand our community better, both in its demographic
composition, and also in collaboration styles and preferences. We want to
find areas where we can continue to do great work, and others where we need
to provide more support so that our projects can keep growing healthy and
diverse.

If you have an apache.org email, you should have received an email with an
invitation to take the 2022 ASF Community Survey. Please take 15 minutes to
complete it.

If you do not have an apache.org email address or you didn’t receive a
link, please follow this link to the survey:

https://edi-asf.limesurvey.net/912832?lang=en

You can find information about privacy on the survey’s Confluence page.
<https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/EDI/Survey+-+Launch+Plan> The
last surveys of this kind were implemented in 2016 and 2020, which means we
are finally in a position to see trends over time.

Your participation is paramount to the success of this project! Please
consider filling out the survey, and share this news with your fellow
Apache contributors. As individuals form the Apache community, your opinion
matters: we want to hear your voice.

If you have any questions about the survey or otherwise, please reach out
to us!

Best regards,

Pranay Pandey

User Stories - Interviews with users

2021-01-01 Thread Pranay Pandey
Hello Everyone,

With the thought to bring real user first-hand experience to the evaluators
who come and validate OFBiz, we started a new playlist on OFBiz YouTube
channel named "User Stories - From the people who have put Apache OFBiz in
action".

Our first guest on this journey is Nicola Mazzoni - who was also a speaker
at ApacheCon 2019. Thank you so much Nicola for sparing time and sharing
your experience with the community. I am sure it will be very fruitful for
anyone willing to learn more about OFBiz.

Here is the first episode on this list: https://youtu.be/PLesfdlhrH4

Requesting all to take a look and put your suggestions and feedback.

kind regards,
Pranay Pandey

OFBiz as Open Source Order Management System

2020-08-25 Thread Pranay Pandey
Hello Devs,

In connection to the proposal that Arpit Mor has initiated on the thread
"Headless Commerce Plugin for OFBiz", I wanted to request your thoughts on
the topic "OFBiz as Order Management System". Here is a draft for your
review and feedback [1].

The thought is to consider OFBiz as an Open Source alternative for
Omnichannel Order Management System. Based on experience from the last
decade, it's found that now the arena has changed and specialization is the
key. Looking at the current scenario, businesses are looking for
cloud-native, cost-effective specialized solutions, and positioning OFBiz
in that space can help a wide user community. It will help us spread the
word as well.

Please take a look at the document and put your thoughts on it.

Re: Update on Business Process Documention

2017-08-28 Thread Pranay Pandey
Thanks Shivangi, Humera, Sonal and Priya.

These business process documents with activity diagrams are coming along
nicely.

I would like to request community members to review and provide their
feedback mainly on the content being added in Business Process overview
documents.

JIRA ticket OFBIZ-9596 <https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OFBIZ-9596> and
sub tickets for more details on the plan being executed here. I am pretty
sure together we'll build so much of good asset for OFBiz.

Kind regards,

2017-08-27 Thread Pranay Pandey
Thanks Rajes for this detailed feedback. Looking great.

The community is in process of fine tuning this document and all the
children. As of now, the current focus is on building good documents and
then continue refining structure so that it's obvious for the reader. Your
feedback will help here greatly. If you are interested in owning any of the
business process document then please refer this JIRA and it's sub-taks for

Can we enable Draw.io addon for Confluence?

There are some business process activity diagrams that I have created using

help me in doing this contribution easily.

Re: Updating 10 year old version of entity engine and service engine.

2017-07-18 Thread Pranay Pandey
Hi Mark,

Yes, you are absolutely right that in past 10 years OFBiz has seen many
changes. Along with the updates to entity and service engine you are
looking for, there are other important updates you can consider. I have
been here since last 10 years and using OFBiz as the main framework to
deliver ERP solutions.

Some more background details-
There are improvements done for better performance in high traffic
environment along with support to ease of use for the OFBiz developers.

There are Security Vulnerability fixes which should also be considered for
the upgrade for sure. Here <https://ofbiz.apache.org/download.html>you can
find more details at the bottom of the page under the heading "Security
Vulnerability".

Here is a list of OFBiz releases done after 2009.
Stable releases which are not supported by the community as of now-
10.04 (2010)
11.04 (2011)
12.04 (2012)
13.07 (2013)

Branches which are not officially released because of external JARs
licensing conflicts. Still available for download to support service
providers and developers around the world-
14.12 (2014), 15.12 (2015)

Latest stable releases- (with given URLs more details about a release can
be accessed)
16.11.01 <https://ofbiz.apache.org/release-notes-16.11.01.html> (2016),
16.11.02 <https://ofbiz.apache.org/release-notes-16.11.02.html> (2016),
16.11.03 <https://ofbiz.apache.org/release-notes-16.11.03.html> (2016)

More details - OFBiz Release History <https://www.apache.org/dist/ofbiz/>

I know this is a very high-level information, but I hope it will be
helpful. Personally, I would recommend to analyze and learn the code and
patterns followed in latest OFBiz release and then do a gap analysis with
the implementation you want to upgrade. The gap analysis will help you
estimate the effort and plan it accordingly.

The reference given by Paul can also be helpful if you want to upgrade to
12.04 which was released in the Year 2012. There will surely be challenges
but you can put your questions on user mailing and move forward.

HTH.

Pranay Pandey

Re: eCommerce PayPal Integration

2017-07-13 Thread Pranay Pandey
Hi Giulio,

Glad to know that the solution reference worked for you.
Some more details on available integration-

PayPal integration services implemented in OFBiz and available in 13.07.
You can refer services_paypal.xml for services already available for PayPal
and supports all the required methods-
Express Checkout, capture, void and refund. Implementation of these
services is done in PayPalServices.java.

HTH.

Re: plugin and hotdeploy

2017-04-25 Thread Pranay Pandey
Good discussion for sure.

IMO, no one would like to use Trunk for an ongoing development of custom
apps. Choosing an official release helps here.

OFBiz is going through a major phase of improvements and all of these are
being done only in trunk, which is perfectly fine.

If you are subscribed to OFBiz Wiki(Confluence) Daily Updates, you will
observe there are ongoing changes to the documentation being taken care of.

I agree that there will be some effort required to keep it up to date and
to make it ready for future releases.

We should define a documentation framework as well, that can be maintained
along with the code in trunk, which is available to users when a specific
release is announced.

When one application is to upgraded to any of the latest releases of OFBiz,
there are definitely a bunch of changes you have to take care of, this time
it would require some changes to the placement of custom applications,
which is not going to be a big effort.

In the software world, making a small change is a big deal when it has many
users, but sometimes you have to take the risks because it's going to
benefit users in future. I personally have witnessed long email threads on
dev list before making these changes in directory structures or replacement
of tools like from ant to gradle.

So yes IMHO, change is always not that easy.

Re: Error Migrating Ofbiz from derby to mysql

2017-04-20 Thread Pranay Pandey
Hi Muhammad Adeel,

I tried connecting MySQL DB with OFBiz 16.11 and it worked without any
issues.
While copying and pasting details from the mentioned document, please be
careful that group name has been updated in 16.11, not a major change but
addition of apache. So it changed as:

org.ofbiz ==> org.apache.ofbiz

*org.ofbiz.olap ==> org.apache*.ofbiz.olap

*org.ofbiz.tenant ==> org.apache*.ofbiz.tenant

Here is a tutorial video on OFBiz YouTube channel that can help you
with this setup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lzmv0DCC5N4

Regarding adding connector jar, follow the instructions about adding
build dependency mentioned in the video. You can also add db jar
dependency in your OFBiz build.xml file, In video it has been
demonstrated by adding this dependency in custom component build.xml.

Please let us know how it goes.

We must give it a try. We know that there are plenty of OFBiz users out

Hi Stimits,

We are planning to make these updates to Tutorial for latest release and
trunk very soon. In the meantime, you can refer README.md file. It contains
all the details you are going to need.

For sure there will be some changes in the way new component/plugin will be
handled, related to directory and file location. For setting up a new
plugin in release 16.11 you can refer this tutorial video -

There are some new videos uploaded to our OFBiz YouTube channel

Currently, I am working on some more tutorial videos, all these are going
to be based on 16.11 and trunk. To get regular updates from YouTube, please
subscribe to the channel.
Video information can also be found here on OFBiz Wiki

OFBiz Tutorial for Beginners Updated and Ready for Reference

2017-01-03 Thread Pranay Pandey
Hi Everyone,

Here is the overhauled OFBiz Tutorial for your reference -
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/x/cQFk
The tutorial has been restructured considering R15.12 branch, I am going to
make updates for trunk as well. I would love to hear back from you for any
feedback you have or any improvements you see is needed. Thanks so much
Swapnil M Mane for all your hard work and support in completing this new
version of OFBiz tutorial for beginners.

This time based on my experience that I have while giving training to
developers on Apache OFBiz, I have tried to cover almost all those details
that a beginner developer expects at one place such as-
- Introduction to OFBiz
- Service entity-auto, Java, and Groovy
- Services Vs Events
- UI Customization with Decorator Screens
and much more.

This tutorial is absolutely built for the beginners, for any of the
advanced topics we'll create child pages to it. E.g.
1. Ajax Requests
2. OFBiz as API Server
3. OFBiz Developer Tools (web tools)
4. Extending an Existing OFBiz Application
and so on

As a next step, now I am going to first create videos for each of the
headings in this tutorial, as uploaded on OFBiz YouTube channel, will link
these with it. Definitely, the plan for videos is going to be the same for
any of the advanced tutorials as well.

Also planning to have one parent document for Advanced OFBiz Tutorials
which will give developers an easy access to advanced tutorials.

Please let me know your feedback for any required improvements you see or
anything that you have in your wishlist as a user/developer that you would
like to add to the tutorial. Let's work together and make it very easy for
any new developer to start working with Apache OFBiz.

Re: How to integrate Ofbiz with Cassandra Database?

2016-06-03 Thread Pranay Pandey
Hi Naveeno,

The answer to the question-
Can OFBiz use CASSANDRA as Database?
will be Yes, but based on my understanding as of now there is no direct
configuration settings available in OOTB OFBiz for the same. It may require
some work to get it working with Cassandra.

Let's wait and see what other community members have to say about it.

Re: [MARKETING] Draft Pages for New OFBiz Website

2016-05-23 Thread Pranay Pandey
I am quite sure, it must have already been discussed. Sorry if I am
repeating it.

We shoudl think of one option to upgrade our support to provide the option
to navigate to the latest release i.e. at least 14.12 if 15.12 not possible.

13.07 looks too old if someone wants to traverse through the latest one.

Re: Calendar and Ofbiz

2016-03-14 Thread Pranay Pandey
Hi Tom,

Yes you can setup calendar view without authentication required and is
having read-only access on public facing website. Some customizations will
be needed.

Are you comfortable in doing custom development in OFBiz? Updation existing
eCommerce application shouldn't be done, instead create your own component
in hot-deploy directory.

Also this website is going to be only used for Information purpose or you
also want to setup product catalog for sell. or you are simply going to
allow people to register to your website for accessing certain information.

Re: Calendar and Ofbiz

2016-03-13 Thread Pranay Pandey
Hi Tom,

Great to know that you are going to use it for a church community, and
surely the application purpose you are mentioning here can be well served
with OFBiz.

Instead of modifying OOTB eCommerce app for your public facing website, it
is recommended to build a custom app having features required.

You can surely use Release 14.12 as will be the latest one. For calendar
features, I OFBiz do have support for calendar. You can refer Work Effort
Manager as an example here
<http://demo-stable-ofbiz.apache.org/workeffort/control/calendar?period=month>
.

For handling customisations in OFBiz you can follow these
<https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OFBIZ/Addressing+Custom+Requirements+In+OFBiz>
best practices.

Wiki is a good place to put user stories/testimonials but shouldn't we have

Re: OFBiz Hackathon for Apachecon US?

2015-01-14 Thread Pranay Pandey
Thanks Sharan.

How about these dates each quarter-

Q1 - Saturday March 21 2015

Q2 - Saturday June 20 2015

Q3 - Saturday September 19 2015

Q4 - Saturday December 19 2015

If community shows interest we can publish news on OFBiz site for the same.
On start of each quarter we can announce the dates and reminders for the
same in the beginning/middle every month. Reminders are needed so that
interested parties can plan their availability accordingly.

We can call vote for the same, this way we will be able to know if
community is interested in participating in such events.

There will be definitely time zone issue we will face but IMO we should
discuss possibilities. The date and the day is important irrespective of
the time zone. Different groups can be active on the same date and we'll
definitely achieve something.

As one community member dedicates a full day of work around 8 hours he may
work on-
1. Documentation Updates
2. Bug Fixes
3. Improvements
4. New Features
5. Testing a component and creating automated tests (JUnit, Selenium)

In general anything is done for the project on the dedicated day and we'll
be able take community
interaction and spirit to next level.

Thoughts?

Re: OFBiz Hackathon for Apachecon US?

2015-01-12 Thread Pranay Pandey
Hi Sharan,

Its a great idea for sure.

Why not calling a day Community Day for OFBiz every quarter of the year?
Usually it can be in the 3rd week of the month, lets say Saturday.
This way we will be able to organize 4 big community day every year.

On this day every community member is invited to solely work on OFBiz bugs,
improvements, new features and testing for whole day together. It will be
completely optional to participate.

It should be possible to come together and work with all the available
tools around us for managing OFBiz i.e. mailing lists, JIRA, Confluence.

Just an idea I got, so thought to put it here as I read your email.
