I've attached a typical screenshot to demonstrate the effect.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

Cheers!

I am very interested in a solution I solved it on QT using
-graphicssystem raster, but sadly, this does not seem to work for LO.

Re: [libreoffice-users] French/English date

2011-12-01 Thread Julius Becker
 - D = Day as 2th
One issue would be that “D” should actually = *2nd*  not *2th* …
Yeah, you're right: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, ...

ie. it would be /highly/ localization/language dependent to try to indicate
an ordinal rather than just let the number stand on it's own…  if I recall
it would be 2e in French, but I think I've also seen  2me  … so it could be
quite problematic, particularly with any large selection of regions.

In French, you use the ordinal number only for the first day of a
month. For every other day, it's a normal cardinal number.

2011-12-01 Thread Julius Becker
Hi at all,

creating an extension might be a solution, but in my opinion, it isn't
a good one.

In French dates like 1er décembre 2011, the ordinal number for the
first day of a month isn't an option, it's obligatory. You cannot say
1 décembre 2011 like LO does. So, LO should offer the possibility
for ordinal numbers without a special extension.

The same for English dates. In classes of students who learn English
as a foreign language, it would be very useful to have a long form of
the English date on worksheets, including st, nd, rd and th.
Doug is right that one could simply _write_ and copy the date, but in
my opinion, fields are there to ease the work.

Since D could mean in French 1er, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, ..., it could
be introduced even for English as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, ...

Kind regards,

Julius

Hi :)
Perhaps the java issue?  Which version of java are you trying to use?  You can
see by going to

Tools - Options - Java

Anything more recent than their 6u21 gets increasingly difficult.  My guess is
that you are on 6u24.  If you can find the older 6u21 then you can install it
alongside the existing version of java.  Then go back to

Tools - Options - Java

to set which version of java LibreOffice is using.  I think web-browsers and
other prgrams keep using the highest version number.

RE: [libreoffice-users] French/English date

2011-12-01 Thread Bruce Carlson
Hi,

In reply to Julius.
I understand your explanation and it seems to me that what you are asking for
is a permanent correction or addition to an existing function in the French
localisation and I'd imagine that that would not be too difficult to do.
Although I have no real idea of how the current formats are coded but I
appreciate the frustration people using the French localisations must feel.

However your original post on this subject has sparked much interest and has
led to other possible adaptations of your original request such as:-

1. multi language ordinal functions. Imagine being able to select a range
of cells in calc and setting the format to ordinal for any number value.
2 . expanded functionality in creating custom number and date formats
including the use of ordinals to allow for people to create their own formats
from local custom not only national language.
3. and one I have introduced and that is being able to save custom formats
with a friendly name that can be, once saved, selected from the existing format
list as and when required.

You may also be correct in these ideas not being solved by an extension but by
actually modifying the LO code itself, that is, embedded directly into LO may
be a better solution.

However please don't think that these expansions of your original post detract
in any way from the importance of your original post because what you have
brought to everyone's attention is the need to correct an existing flaw, not to
introduce a new function, although in order to do what you have asked does
require the creation of some new functions and it is these new functions that
has sparked everyone's imagination as to other possible uses .

RE: [libreoffice-users] French/English date

2011-12-01 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
True.  The reason i suggested an Extension is because
1.  someone said they already had some C# coding to do at least part of this
2.  i think it's faster than getting something into the main branch and dealing
with all the politics and systems of another group (ie the devs group)
3.  Once something is tested as an Extension it seems that it's a lot easier to
pull it into the main branch

We do need more programmers/devs and doing an Extension might help someone work
their way into that group.  I think the devs are quite a welcoming bunch and
have things such as Easy Hacks and a mentoring system to help people learn
how to code for LibreOffice (and in general too).  We already have a lot of
programmers but there is always room for more.

We are usually mostly short of people in the documentation group and it's
documentation that is usually the problem with most OpenSource products but by
sheer coincidence quite a few new people have just recently joined so we can
look forward to guides for the 3.4.x branch arriving within the next few weeks.

Guides for the 3.3.x branch are at
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications
along with 3rd party documentation.  The French team have an excellent FAQ
which a couple of people are trying to translate into English although that is
where we are really short of people.

Tom :)

thanks for notifying us of this, indeed I didn't know about them. :-)

If you do so you get also an entry for OpenOffice.org with version 3.3 and 70

I did not pay attention to the list of file types as OO.o used to

the problem was that the extensions were .wp (since WP never bothered with

With that extension and specifying to LO that they're WP docs, the problem

[libreoffice-users] Is it possible to format text boxes in writer (bullets, hyperlinks etc.)?

2011-12-01 Thread floridabrits
Hi there LibreOffice fans...

Just a qq hopefully... I am using writer and I have created a text box that
covers a colored shape... I want to be able to format that text box so it
is a bulleted list and then create a hyperlink from one of the items on the
bulleted list.

I can't seem to find a straightforward way to do this... and not even sure
if it's possible...

Does anyone know how I can achieve this please?

Many thanks in advance...

Good trick to remember, check to make sure the extension is wpd not wp.

With that extension and specifying to LO that they're WP docs, the

Paul, I am running Debian on a desktop computer. I generally have LibreOffice
running with one or more documents open. I also use a number of scripts that
take advantage of a separate headless isntance of LibreOffice to convert files
to pdf and other formats.

What I did was to make a copy of the ~/.libreoffice directory, calling it
something line ~/.libreoffice-cli. The normal working instance of LibreOffice
will use the ~/.libreoffice environment. The script will use the
~/.libreoffice-cli environment with the following system call:

soffice --headless -env:UserInstallation=file:///home/[USER]/.libreoffice-cli/
-convert-to pdf -outdir /tmp [FILENAME]

I don't know if there is a better way, but this works flawlessly for me. I
hope
it helps you.

Do you have a special reason to use a text box? In Writer you can use a
frame. Frames have nearly all capabilities of normal texts, including
list styles and text-hyperlinks.

[libreoffice-users] Unwanted horizontal white hairline rules in PDF in Mac Preview

2011-12-01 Thread bh
I just switched from NeoOffice to LibreOffice on my Mac. LibreOffice is much
more reliable! I was getting mysterious
disappearances of pictures in NeoOffice and have had no such problems since
the switch.

But one new problem is that when I export a PDF and then view it in Preview
(in MacOS 10.6.8), there are full-width
hairline white horizontal rules aligned with the top edge of some JPGs in
the document. These rules don't appear when
I view the document in Adobe Reader, but they do seem to appear when I
/print/ even from Adobe Reader. So I'm
guessing the exported PDF has some not-quite-standard feature that isn't
working in MacOS.

An example is at http://cs.berkeley.edu/~bh/bug.pdf

Thanks!

Re: [libreoffice-users] Localization of macros

Hi Andrew,
I can see that you have another approach to the problem so far. My idea
has been to use the already existing localization files to also localize
other things than dialogs.

More comments inline to spare you a lot of time (I solved the most
important problem).

extension - I'm sure.

For others who might be interested: Is this public available somewhere?
I can recommend to every macro programmer to have a look.

My idea is also to use it in an extension.

Problems so faris:

- When I read the DialogStrings_xx_YY.properties ... - problem
solved ;-)

- Effectiveness. I'm not sure this is the most effective way and I'm
affraid that with many strings it will run slow. I haven't tried
with more

than these very few strings.

Ahhh, I can perhaps take a look, but it is already 3:00 AM and I must
be up early for work.

Hey its no hurry.
in the meantime I asked a colleague for help and we found a solution for
the UTF8 problem. New version here:

http://blog.magenta-aps.dk/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Review.oxt

But I still would like your opinion.

For the record: If anyone can use it, its free software (LGPL/GPL or
something) ;-)

Missing work to be done (not problems)

- Error handling
- Better way to load only relevant strings (only partly
implemented so

far)
- Default language should be from DialogString_xx_YY.default and not
hardcoded
- Script to generate Addons.xcu and /Office/UI/XYZWindowState.xcu

Feel free to tell me what you think of my solution.

Cheers,

Re: [libreoffice-users] Unwanted horizontal white hairline rules in PDF in Mac Preview

2011-12-01 Thread webmaster for Kracked Press Productions

do you have a PDF printer to try?
Ubuntu and other Linux have CUPS-PDF and there is a Windows one called
doPDF.
I find that it is good to try both the Export to PDF and a PDF Printer
to compare each output.

Sometimes it works better with CUPS, while other times it is better with
the Exporting.

To my, you PDF sample looks like it has ruled lines as part of the
background texture. The more I zoom in for the viewing, the less ruled
lines keep in the image. At 300% there is hairlines with only the
photo, the BITS logo next to it and the National Science Foundation
logo. All other images do not seem to have one. I do not see any on
the second page.

I wonder why there was only 3 images that had the hairline associated
with them. Seems weird. I use to have problems with Adobe's
Pagemaker. It placed a small black box on part of the first page of a 8
page newsletter. No one could figure why it happened. IT never
happened with any other document. So I ended up using a different
package for a pit till I quite doing newsletters.

So it could be just a gremlin in the document.

Have you created a different document, adding the same background and
some images? Did the hairline show up with that new document? If it
does, then there is a recurring issue. IF not, then it could be
something with that document that caused the gremlin to appear.

Try a second document. Simple one with a little text and images, using
the same background. We need to know if it is a problem that can be
reproduced.

[libreoffice-users] automatic formatting, turn off

2011-12-01 Thread 20rdj04
Hello,

I am trying to copy a contract that I purchased at the stationary store. On
the left margin, the contract starts with 1. Parties: Everything between
the quotes is BOLD and underlined. Initially, I had no problem with this.
But then I put a RETURN into the text that followed and suddenly I had a
2. in the middle of the text, and the text was indented. The entire
contract, with 17 numbers and headings, are in the style that I was taught
55 years ago as block. The number and heading is in the first line of each
paragraph. And the second line is on the left margin under the number.

I went into LibreOffice Help, Changing the Default Template. In To Create
a Default Template, the first line reads, 1. Create a document and the
content and formatting styles that you want. I THOUGHT that was what I was
doing!

What I want is an OPEN style, wherein I tell the computer what I want, NOT
have the computer tell me! I don't want automatic indenting, or numbering,
or bullets, or almost any of those other bells and whistles.

As usual, I have not ASKED any questions. Perhaps I should erase these 3
paragraphs and simply ask, How do I convert my LibreOffice to a typewriter?

Thank you.

They look like grid/guidelines. Did you do your document in Draw ?
If so, did you activate the grid and use guidelines for positioning your

I suspect this might be an option you can turn off in the relevant

Hi :)
OpenJDK is also run by Oracle and suffers about the same.  I'm not sure about
the best version numbers numbers for that either.  I don't know if the
community that work hard on that are able to free it from Oracle in the way
that TDF freed LibreOffice from them.

I don't know if it is still possible to get a copy of the older version of java
from the Oracle website.  You used to have to register at their site to get
them.

Java dependence is being written out but you still notice slow-downs in
wizards, some Extensions, the embedded database (best to use a separate
back-end such as Postgresql) and when starting-up LibreOffice

[libreoffice-users] Table of Contents with clickable links

2011-12-01 Thread Dag Wieers

Hi,

For my asciidoc-odf project I am looking for a way to have a Table of
Contents with clickable links to bring you automatically to the content.
This is how most of the PDFs ought to work, but I cannot make this work in
LibreOffice and as a result it doesn't work in the generated PDF.

Can someone explain me how to do this in Libreoffice ?

The Index/Table dialog has a button Hyperlink, which doesn't seem to have
any effect, but it might be something I do not understand in this regard.

Thanks in advance !

Ok, thanks. I came across that one before, but failed to make it work.
Thanks to your reply I persevered and found what I was doing wrong.

I can now generate a Table of Contents with working links by default !

One remark, the dialog where you edit the Index/Table where you have the
E# and E buttons. Those buttons are too small so you can not see in fact
what they state. For example, the LS and LE buttons do not properly show
the text either. That makes it hard to understand what is going on.

This is using LibreOffice 3.4.4 on a RHEL6 using Gnome.

Cannot comment on this poster, but, I have seen a very similar issue on
both OOo and LO. I see this on Linux, not on Windows. I had the problem
with Fedora 15 and also Fedora 16. Both are 64-bit versions. I use the
KMod drivers for NVidia installed from the repositories. I see the
issues with other applications as well, but the primary offenders are
OOo and QT.

More comments inline to spare you a lot of time (I solved the most
important problem).

Wow.
This is certainly a bunch of gold. I will use this to compile the
final extension - I'm sure.

For others who might be interested: Is this public available
somewhere? I can recommend to every macro programmer to have a look.

My idea is also to use it in an extension.

Problems so faris:

- When I read the DialogStrings_xx_YY.properties ... - problem
solved ;-)
- Effectiveness. I'm not sure this is the most effective way and
I'm
affraid that with many strings it will run slow. I haven't tried
with more

than these very few strings.

Ahhh, I can perhaps take a look, but it is already 3:00 AM and I must
be up early for work.

Hey its no hurry.
in the meantime I asked a colleague for help and we found a solution
for the UTF8 problem. New version here:

http://blog.magenta-aps.dk/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Review.oxt

But I still would like your opinion.

For the record: If anyone can use it, its free software (LGPL/GPL or
something) ;-)

Missing work to be done (not problems)

- Error handling
- Better way to load only relevant strings (only partly
implemented so

far)
- Default language should be from DialogString_xx_YY.default and
not

hardcoded
- Script to generate Addons.xcu and /Office/UI/XYZWindowState.xcu

Feel free to tell me what you think of my solution.

Cheers,

Here are the details.

I'm currently running LO version 3.4.4 OOO340m1 from the Debian sid
(unstable) repository. The Debian revision number is 1:3.4.4-2.

My OS is Debian/sid.

The video driver is from the package
xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-legacy-71xx revision 71.86.15-1 with kernel
module built using nvidia-kernel-legacy-71xx-dkms revision 71.86.15-1

My kernel is 3.1.0-1-686-pae

My video card is a dual-head GoForce something - sorry I can't seem to
find the model number in /var/log/Xorg.0.log though it does mention
Chipset: NVIDIA NV34

My xorg.conf is cut-and-paste below.

For what it's worth, I have never had any trouble with QT apps, as some
other repliers to this thread have. Only with OOo and LO.

Cheers, Jonathan
