Did your previous version of LO crash or did your computer crash while
LO was open? This message usually occurs after a crash that caused LO to
close improperly.

I just installed 3.4.5 on an older DELL with XP Home SP3 and I had
troubles and had to do a repair reinstall to get it running properly.

With each system, there are differences. Some will install and run with
no issues, while others will have issues to overcome. Of course, it did
not help that the guy had not used his anti-virus since summer of 2009
[according to the add/remove programs system to get rid of the old
anti-virus package and replace it with a new/better one].

Re: [libreoffice-users] Install extension multiuser (solve avoid StartCenter?)

2012-02-14 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I found something in the Help file! (for once! (the Help files in LibreOffice
are not usually very helpful at the moment))

Users with administrator or root privileges will see a dialogue box in which
they can choose to install extensions for all users or only for me. Normal
users without those privileges can install, remove, or modify extensions only
for their own use.
1.  A user with root or administrator privileges can install an extension as a
shared extension that is available to all users. After selecting an extension,
a dialogue box opens and asks whether to install for the current user or all
users.
2.  A user without root privileges can only install an extension for their own
use. This is called a user extension.

Usually the official documentation is far better than the help guides.  The
chapters usually appear on this wiki-page first
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications
and then appear on the official page a while later
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/documentation/

So you have to be logged into the machine as the Administrator/SuperUser in
order to avoid having to copypaste the Extension into the various different
users.
Regards from
Tom :)

Thanks for your answer Jay,

Before LO 3.5 I was using LO 3.4.5 with no problems and with no crashes
before. Besides, before sending the question, I repaired the
installation to test if the first set-up had any problems with the same
result and so, I reinstall LO 3.4.5 and it works perfectly. Do you think

resolve the problem?

Further thoughts.

I believe that the including of helper utilities in a standard LO
distribution could help to differentiate it from OOo. As an example, if LO
is invoked without any parameters, it takes considerable time to load, and
then presents a choice of its major applications. Instead of this, it could
quickly load a selection box that offered a range of simple tasks (view a
file, convert formats, email a file etc.) as well as the major apps. I use
Linux with a KDE 3.5 Desktop in which the major apps are presented
individually in the main menu. What I'd like to see in addition is a
selection page like this that loads quickly, and presents a series of simple
tasks without loading the whole shebang.

All Users of OOo and (sign of the cross) Word are automatically accustomed,
not only to the loading delay of these monster apps, but to their
(unavoidably) complex menus. If LO were to present a quick, simple interface
of the type I've described as the default invocation, it would be a paradigm
shift for Users.

[libreoffice-users] Re: LO 3.5 - Can't see page margins in Writer

2012-02-14 Thread noibs
I can understand eliminating visible margins for people who desire that...but
why not make it a preference setting? Yes, I already thought of either
using a colored background or a border around my writable area, but those
things print. That's what I'll probably do, but it's a kludge that should
be necessary.

I'm a college professor who writes his own teaching materials. Each course
features roughly a 400-page Writer document that contains a variety of
inline graphical objects created in Draw or Calc and then pasted in as a GDI
Metafile. Usually, I need to resize those images and having visible margins
REALLY helps that process.

And I thought that Apple was the only entity who was making dumb user
interface issues like that. Actually, not just Apple. I'm running Ubuntu
11.10 in a virtual machine on my Macs (for some specialized tasks)--I can't
believe how bad the user-interface is. I used to love the Ubuntu UI.

[libreoffice-users] LO 3.5 corrupts DOCX completely

2012-02-14 Thread Philip Gillißen

Hi!

I just downloaded and tested LibreOffice 3.5 on Windows 64 Bit and my
test result is depressing:
LibreOffice 3.5 corrupts my DOCX files completely, so that Microsoft
Word 2010 cannot open it anymore!

I tried it with simple documents and it failed completely. Word doesn't
even offer to recover the document, it is just unable to open it. I
think this is a huge issue for most users of LibreOffice.

On Ubuntu 64 bit, with LibreOffice 3.4, the documents were only
corrupted, so that Word had to recover it (with lots of lost
formatting...) but it could open the file.

I experienced a similar behaviour with xlsx, too.

I don't know, why the importer for docx/xlsx is getting worse. I hope,
you guys can use this information to improve LO.

Regards,
Philip

Perhaps you only need a different workflow? Do you want to align the

Or do you not use the mouse at all? Then you need only the positionsize

I first thought too, I would need that border. But then I find no
situation, where it is really needed. So please describe a goal, where
you need the border line.

[libreoffice-users] Re: LO 3.5 - Can't see page margins in Writer

2012-02-14 Thread noibs
I have no illusions that I'm going to win this argument; however, I use the
visible margins in two ways:

1. When deciding when to add a manual page break, I need to exactly how far
until the end of the main page, excluding the space occupied by the footer.
Let's say I'm getting ready to begin a third-level heading. Depending upon
the visible space near the bottom of the page, I might decide to begin that
section on the next page. Right now, I can't accurately guage that space,
especially since my footer has some blank space above the text. If I'm
beginning a Level 2 heading, I tend to start it on a new page unless there's
about 2 inches at the bottom of a page.

2. When adding any kind of graphical object to a Writer document, I
sometimes manually expand the size of the object (proportionately) to be as
large as the width of the page. I can keep enlarging the size until it's in
the margins of the page--but I won't know that with LO 3.5 because I can't
see the margins. This is a huge issue for me, because I embed many
graphical objects (usually GDI Metafile objects from spreadsheets) in Writer
documents and I often want them to be as large as the printed width of the
page. If you stop allowing expansion of graphical objects past the margins,
then this issue would be taken care of.

Just because certain individuals don't make use of certain user-interface
features in both applications and operating systems doesn't mean view that
issue in the same way.

Further, my question is still valid--why should a long-time user-interface
feature be completely eliminated as compared to making it a preference
setting? I could make the argument that was made to me (justify why I use
this)--I don't use about 70% of all preference settings in LibreOffice.
Thus, let's eliminate these unless each person can justify why they use
them. How would that be? I'm not trying to be obnoxious, but it's pretty
insulting when you've been doing serious writing for about 30 years and then
get a question like this.

Frankly, I view the elimination of visible margins as part of the dumbing
down of user interfaces that I'm seeing in Mac OS Lion, Ubuntu 11.10, and
now LO. It's the let's make it pretty to look at even if if compromises
the usefulness school of thought. Clearly, LO Writer is not as pretty to
look at with margin guides showing. But, for me, it's more useful.
C'mon--this is a View menu option if there ever was one.

[libreoffice-users] Re: LO 3.5 - Can't see page margins in Writer

2012-02-14 Thread noibs
Here's the best workaround that I've discovered so far. I have five really
large (400+) page documents that I'm constantly revising and that are only
printed once or twice a year.

First, I've set my default page style to include a very thin (0.02 pt wide)
light gray border around the entire printed area of the page. Set the
distance from the border to the text in the page to zero.

Then, shaded the background of my headers and footers to have a very light
gray background, so as to be able to distinguish the main page from the
header and footer.

It will take less than a minute to get rid of these when printing. For
draft printing, it doesn't make any difference whether these added things
print.

By the way, in Apple's Pages word processor, margins and header and footers
can be shown or made invisible via the Show Document Layout under the View
menu. Hmmmn. Wonder why they do that if it's such a useless thing?

On Windows, if you have several user accounts on one machine, EVERY time
you install an extension with the Extension Manager, you are asked if it
was to be used by that user or all the users that have an account on

[libreoffice-users] editing pdf files

2012-02-14 Thread John Bowers
Hi,

I checked the FAQs and the forum and did not find any subject lines containing
exactly editing pdf files, so I am sending this email. I have a pdf file
consisting of forms with numbers and text in various boxes. I would like to
edit some of the numbers. Do you know if this is possible using LibreOffice?
According to this entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PDF_software, it
would appear to be possible. I wanted to confirm this before downloading and
installing LibreOffice.

thanks very much,

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LO 3.5 - Can't see page margins in Writer

2012-02-14 Thread Regina Henschel

Hi noibs,

noibs schrieb:

I have no illusions that I'm going to win this argument; however, I use the
visible margins in two ways:

1. When deciding when to add a manual page break, I need to exactly how far
until the end of the main page, excluding the space occupied by the footer.
Let's say I'm getting ready to begin a third-level heading. Depending upon
the visible space near the bottom of the page, I might decide to begin that
section on the next page.

Let LO decide it. You format your third-level heading with the style
Heading 3. It has the setting Keep with next paragraph. So it will
never happen, that the heading is on one page and the following
paragraph on the next page. If you want that the paragraph has at least
e.g. 4 lines on the bottom of the page, than set the orphan control to
4, or more extreme use the setting do not split paragraph. With such
settings the layout remains fine, if you insert or delete something
before this third-level heading.

Right now, I can't accurately guage that space,

especially since my footer has some blank space above the text. If I'm
beginning a Level 2 heading, I tend to start it on a new page unless there's
about 2 inches at the bottom of a page.

You can see the exact space in the vertical ruler and you get a
delimiter line for the footer, when you hover the footer area with the
mouse. But as mentioned above, there is no need to insert manual page
breaks for that reason.

You find all you need in Right click graphic Picture dialog page
Type. Mark Follow textflow, Mark Keep ratio, set width to
relative and value to 100%.

My question was not intended to make you defend, but a simple question
what you do with this lines, because they are only visual and have no
function like snapping or so.

Thus, let's eliminate these unless each person can justify why they use
them. How would that be? I'm not trying to be obnoxious, but it's pretty
insulting when you've been doing serious writing for about 30 years and then
get a question like this.

30 years ago I used a typewriter with hard return at every line end ;)

Frankly, I view the elimination of visible margins as part of the dumbing
down of user interfaces that I'm seeing in Mac OS Lion, Ubuntu 11.10, and
now LO. It's the let's make it pretty to look at even if if compromises
the usefulness school of thought. Clearly, LO Writer is not as pretty to
look at with margin guides showing. But, for me, it's more useful.
C'mon--this is a View menu option if there ever was one.

Perhaps you write a feature request to get such switch and/or write to
libreoffice-ux-adv...@lists.freedesktop.org to discuss the feature with
the developers? Please, don't get me wrong. I'm not against a switch to
let the user decide, whether to show the border lines or not. But
discussing here will not make it appear.

Kind regards
Regina

[libreoffice-users] LibO 3.5.0 Writer - AutoSpellcheck doesn't work for Dutch language

2012-02-14 Thread Spiff

As I'm not sure at which list best to post, and as several lists that seem
more suitable are restricted and need a request to get access, I'll first
post to the Users list.
Please let me know if I should better post to another list.

About LibO 3.5.0 Writer - AutoSpellcheck doesn't work for Dutch language -

AutoSpellcheck checks each word as it is typed and displays a wavy red line
under any misspelled words. When the word is corrected, the red wavy line
disappears.
Today I updated to LibO 3.5.0, using the
LibO_3.5.0_Win_x86_install_multi.msi installer, and now I notice that
AutoSpellcheck doesn't work for Dutch language. When I choose English (US)
AutoSpellcheck works fine and displays a wavy red line under any misspelled
words.

Is it a bug in LibO 3.5.0, AutoSpellcheck not working for Dutch language?
(If so, at which list should I post to report that bug?)
Or is it something I can correct as user?

Best regards,
Spiff

No, you can't do anything with database data in Calc. You can not query

Once you connected a Base document to the address book you have the all the

Where do you get that idea? You can create a database using a calc document
as your data source and create queries and forms and reports as you would
with any other data source. Your only restriction is that you can't do data
entry, so any changes have to be made in Calc.

Compare this:

with this:

The Base document provides a direct link to the current TB data. You don't
need to update any intermediate files. The availlable features and

One more workaround that seems to have the least drawbacks for me is to apply
a very light shade of gray or some color to the background of the page. It
will include the main page, header and footer. Then, if you haven't already
done it, set your printing preferences in Writer to not print backgrounds.
Create a template for new documents and you are all set.

I've been trying to envision working with multiple columns and multiple
graphics images with text wrap--basic page payout. Yes, without the margin
guides you can get the job done, but I don't think it can be done as quickly
and as effortlessly.

Like I said above, this seems to be the way of the world right now and I
think most of it has been driven by Apple's change to the Mac OS Lion user
interface to make it more like iOS (and dumber as a result). Because of
Apple's mandatory autosave and versions in iWork Pages, I've now returned
100% to LibreOffice because it was driving me crazy and couldn't be turned
off. I think the Ubuntu Unity interface was created for much the same
reasons--prettier and dumber.

I'm the first to agree that LO Writer documents look way nicer without the
layout guides. Because of that, it may attract more novice users. Why
knows. But a requirement and an option are two completely different things.
Given that the code for the layout guides already exists, I seriously
question the wisdom of those who decided to make the change mandatory and
not an option. What they are essentially saying is that they know what's
best for me. Take it or leave it. When I find a better option, I'll leave
it.

I'm know I'm probably violating whatever the rules of this forum are in
terms of editorializing, so this will be it.

Telling things is better that shutting up.

What bothers me the more on the users lists (FR is the same for that
matter) is the recurring motto Regina sang: discussing here will not
make it appear.
To tell the truth, this is a shoking answer. Users may not wish to
register to some strange or hidden list for a one-shot message,
non-english speaking users might feel they are set aside. As the users
lists are frequently visited by members of TDF, it would seem important
these knowledgeable people report to the devs, if the devs themselves
don't lurk round here (which is a shame development-wise).

Hi :)
No worries.  We often argue and disagree with each other.  It's amazing the
things that people get passionate about!  At least this one is relevant and
on-topic!

It's worth posting a feature-request.  As you point out it surely isn't too
tough although it's a bit of a mystery why it isn't already being given as
one.  Just post a bug-report and use the drop-downs to make it a
feature-request.  This guide might help
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport

In the mean-time it's well worth trying Regina's advice.
Good luck and regards from

It just might be that English is listed as the Default. If so, can you

AutoSpellcheck checks each word as it is typed and displays a wavy red line

disappears.
Today I updated to LibO 3.5.0, using the

AutoSpellcheck doesn't work for Dutch language. When I choose English (US)
AutoSpellcheck works fine and displays a wavy red line under any misspelled

Is it a bug in LibO 3.5.0, AutoSpellcheck not working for Dutch language?
(If so, at which list should I post to report that bug?)
Or is it something I can correct as user?

No, you can't do anything with database data in Calc. You can not query

export to csv is completely pointless.
Once you connected a Base document to the address book you have the all the

If you anchor an object to a character, your object will be treated as a
character. That's why there are large white space on the line of your
object due to its height.
Instead, anchor it to a paragraph. Then you have freedom to move your

[libreoffice-users] more problems with LO 3.5

2012-02-14 Thread Dan Lewis
I wonder if 3.5 is really ready. I checked my templates in the
splash screen: none there. I also check what was contained in my
template folder as listed in the Template Path [Tools Options
LibreOffice Paths]. There were all of my templates I have been using
since 3.3.4. I have not had this problem before, not even with version
3.5 Beta (RC2).
This along with some of the other posts, 3.5 is not getting better,
just different.
The quickest way for me to get things how I want them is to follow
my own earlier advice: I grouped my templates into folders. Then with
administrative privileges, I copied my templates to the template path in
my installed LO folder. Sure enough, LO lists them by folders when I
click Templates in the LO Splash Screen.
Strange behavior, and not a pleasant thought for people who use
quite a few templates.

The problem is not with the changed path for the templates unless
they missed a link when they changed the location. Placing one or more
templates into the folder listed in the new path does not make them visible
for use as it always has.
One more point that also seems a little strange: I installed 3.5 from
LO website on Ubuntu 11.10 that did contained no LO nor OOo folders. When I
looked at the new path which ends with /3/user/template, there was no
template folder in the user folder.

All,
I would like to do the same however, as I wrote on 29-12-2012 in LO
3.4.5 on Ubuntu 10.04 it is impossible to link with the TB address-book
although the choice is given (see the referenced mail). Or is this
feature finally implemented in 3.5.

Perhaps they just have it off by default? Seems silly to re-program

Create a native odf document in LO. Open that odf document using m$o.
Write to m$ and tell them that m$ is unable to open odf files. Tell us

Hmm. That's strange you are having this problem. I run Windows 7 Home 64
bit and just created a docx file in MS Word 2007 - then modified it in LO
3.5. Afterwords, I was able to open it in Word with no problems.

Could this be a problem possible unique to MS Word 2010?

Looking at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46060 and
the comments, one explanation could be:

You saved the document as ODT but named it DOCX. Are you sure, you
didn´t do that?

Office 2010 has a compatibility mode for files .docx created with Word
2007. Office 2007 can interoperate with Office 2010 correctly if service
pack 2 is installed. Have you saved the file in compatibility mode or
not? MS change its standard at every release...
