It doesn't click properly and the suggestion of creating a table using the Wizard vanishes. I have to confess I haven't used Libreoffice before, but my Boss suggested it for a database and showed me how to start off. I have used a database before but I really can't get on with this at the Here's a step by step test you can do : 1) Start LibreOffice 2)(a) Choose File New Database from the dropdown File menu, OR 2)(b) from the Start Center, click on the Database icon 3) The Database creation wizard should appear. 4) Choose Create a Database. 5) Click on Next. 6) The following screen allows you to choose what you want to do after the new database has been saved, leave the default settings for the time being - what happens here is that an empty (it does in fact contain certain configuration data, but that is hidden from the user) ODB database container file is created which contains no tables 7) Accept the default settings as mentioned in point 6 and click on Finish. 8) The wizard now asks you for a name to be given to the database file you are about to register and a location on the hard disk at which to save it. 9) Enter a name and then press Save. 10) The main window of your newly saved database file should now appear. By default, it should contain 4 icons in a column to the left of the window, the first icon is named Tables. These icons are clickable and give you access to the various main functions of the database application in relation to your database file. 11) Since Tables should be selected by default, in the split window that occupies most of the space, you should have an empty space in the lower pane, and three entries in the upper pane. The three entries are as follows : Create Table in Design View... Use Wizard to Create Table... Create View... 12) Click on Create Table in Design View... Let us know what happens next. [libreoffice-users] Impress issue - Number of pages in PDF or printed handouts
Hello all, I am a user of LibreOffice 3.5.2.2 under Ubuntu 10.04 (but soon moving to 12.04 :) ) I'm writing to make a suggestion for Impress, more precisely in the Printing and PDF exporting options. Background: It is currently possible to export an .ODP to .PDF (single slide). Under the Print option, it is also possible to print to a file (.PDF) with multiple slides per page (Handouts). Also under the print option, when selecting other information to print, I have the 3 following Contents choices: adding the Slide name, the Date and Hidden pages. (see Impress Documentation, Chapter 10 Printing, E-mailing, Exporting, and Saving Slide Shows, page 7) Suggestion: What I would like to suggest is to add in this Contents menu the choice Page number, so that I could add the page number on my Handout. (see Impress Documentation, Chapter 10 Printing, E-mailing, Exporting, and Saving Slide Shows, page 7) For example, I have a Handout of 2 numbered slides on one .PDF page (with Print to file option), but I cannot add the page number via Impress. Additional suggestion: Furthermore, when converting directly to .PDF (either with the Save as PDF, the Export to PDF or the PDF button of the Standard menu bar), it would be nice to add the option of a Handout there, with the same Contents menu, i.e. add the page number to the handout. [libreoffice-users] Input Needed for more LibreOffice Stories
Hi, Everyone: Some of you may have seen my recent article 12 Ways LibreOffice Writer Tops MS Word. Since the article was Slashdotted, I've been asked by my editor at Datamation to write several followups. In the interests of fairness, I thought I'd do a flipflop and talk about where LibreOffice lags behind MS Office. I also thought (although I have my own ideas) that I'd ask for input from other users. At this point, I'm not sure if I'll discuss the office suites as a whole, or just the word processors, so any and all comments will be welcome. If you have any thoughts, please send them to me by noon Pacific time on Sunday, April 22nd. Another article in the next month or so might include a comparison of Calc and Excel, so please send any comments on that topic, as well. I'd be especially interested in hearing from high-end users about how the two spreadsheets compare when doing long and complex formulae. office politics Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: database
Hi :) Office Politics. It sounds to me like Elizabeth is being played and that her boss wants to 1) 'prove' that LibreOffice doesn't work 2) get her fired or demoted by 'proving' she is incompetent How-To 'prove' that a tool doesn't work = give it to someone that 'everyone' is in awe of but has never done the type of task before and never used the tools for anything else. How-To 'prove' someone is incompetent = Step1, give them a task that could be made to sound easy, ie 'just' a list of customers for mail-merging. It helps if no-one else in the office has done the task or that anyone that has done something similar also has severe self-esteem issues or is an extremely advanced user that found the task trivial after studying the subject at college for 3 years or something. Step2, tell them what tools to use and carefully pick something that no-one in the office has any familiarity with so that there is no-one to trick into getting help from. I have seen this sort of thing happen quite often and fallen fould of it a couple of times myself. It's not always deliberately done. Sometimes the aim is to build the person up rather than being part of a campaign to destroy them and that would be used as an excuse if you confronted them or raised a complaint about them. Recently i began to learn that a good way to turn the tables is to delegate the task to someone that is likely to be able to complete the task and give them more support than you were given, ie point them to the users-list and official documentation and let them know you don't think the task is trivial at all but encourage them into believing you think they might be one of the few people you know that is up to the challenge (ie generally empower them and leave them to get on with it). Likewise, SUM(5) is correct syntax as well. The question is general because a general understanding is required! The example concerns only integers, e.g. where a1=1 and b2=2, the results are correct, but the question is about learning the correct syntax so that formula entered in a calc spreadsheet will not be lost or corrupted when the spreadsheet is opened in another odf compliant software, e.g. gnumeric. I don't want to use a sum syntax such as (a1+b2), which gives the correct result, but if opened in another program, the formula is lost or gives an incorrect answer. All spreadsheet software I know of are accepting the syntax above. Of course, the syntax to use is preferably SUM(A1:A10), ie using a cell range rather than discrete cell references, but the latter can be useful (see 3. below). So the following are all syntactically correct: 1. SUM(A1:A10) - returns the sum of the numerical values within the range. Non-numeric values are ignored. 2. SUM(A1:A10;Z1:Z10) - like 1, with multiple ranges. 3. SUM(A1;B2;Z15) - returns the sum of several cells. Non-numeric values are ignored, opposite to what A1+B2+Z15 would return (see Regina's answer). ...and any combination of the previous. Hi :) You might find it easier to search through previous posts by using Nabble. Errr, well MS looks prettier on the surface and successfully makes people feel they have to buy the newest one all the time for 'greater interoperability'. It easily slips into different style settings so that bullet-points and fonts can easily switch around and look very different throughout a document without even trying. If using non-'American'-English the language settings for spelling and grammar slip easily back into American-English. MS Office is also sexily vulnerable to malware and stable enough that updates to reduce vulnerabilities don't appear too hastily. What happens in your example, is that a1 and a2 are first calculated and then sent to the function SUM, which then doesn't have very much more to do than just returning its input value. So if a1=5 and a2=7, then SUM's argument is 12. So SUM calculates the sum of 12 in this case, which is very unnecessary. On the other hand, with syntax ”=SUM(a1;a2₎”, a1 and a2 are sent to SUM, and SUM calculates and returns the sum. However in calc the function: =a1+b2 still produces a correct result. Isn't the logical behaviour for the second function to return an error, for non-compliance with the standard. No. ”=a1+a2” has nothing to do with the SUM function at all. This is being asked for learning if it is better to use the official syntax or accept that these short-cuts exist. It's not a short-cut, since it has nothing to do with the SUM function, see above. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: database
Hi :) Brilliant! Thanks Larry! Apparently Oracle have started working on Java 7_4 already and Java 7_3 still hasn't been released. The 6_29 on Mac was widely reported as helping a nearly 1% of Macs world-wide to get infected or compromised with some sort of malware. That doesn't mean that later versions are safer, just that problems haven't been widely reported yet. Windows users are familiar with dealing with infections and antivirus companies tend to claim that around 20% of Windows machines are infected at any 1 time and there are thousands of viruses and trojans and such adding up to hundreds of thousands of threats. Mac has 1 or 2 every few years and each time that gets blown-up out of all proportion by the press that wouldn't bother to report similar incidents on Windows. For Windows and GnuLinux it's fairly easy to install a JRE (Java Run-time Environment) 7 even though they haven't been officially released yet. I don't know if it's easy to get the 7_4 yet but the 7_3 is fairly easy to get from Java.com. Not so easy for Macs tho! This is about all i got from a google search http://www.vineetmanohar.com/2011/03/installing-java-7-on-mac-os-x/ NOT trivial! Mostly LibreOffice doesn't need java at all so you can switch it off Tools - Options - Java just untick the box at the top. It's only needed for some Extensions/Add-ons, Wizards, Base (if you use the embedded back-end or HSqlDb as an external back-end instead of something like Sqllite). Generally if you can switch it off and then see if LO grumbles about not having it then you are very unlikely to lose any data. If it grumbles then you can just switch java on again, or reinstall it and then switch it on again. Personally i think the whole scaremongering thing is being hyped up waaay out of proportion. Almost like a film just before it gets released. has a major antivirus company recently released a new product for Mac? Is one about to be released in the next couple of months? Vector images - think signs and graphic artwork creation use Draw, or an Inkscape type of package The people who decided what was needed, and not needed, for the TDF/LO office suite package did not want to reinvent the wheel if there was a good open source option available. Some people asked about having an email client with OOo/AOO, and now LO, to replace MS Outlook. There are many good free or open source email clients out there, so the efforts of the developers did not feel we should go and try to make one as good or better. OOo had a good vector graphics drawing package, so LO continued to work with that to make better and better. But a vector graphics package does not do pixel related drawing and image editing. GIMP has been the standard for open source pixel-based image editing package, as far as I can tell. So why spend manpower to create a better one for this package. An office suite needs to deal with a word processor, a spreadsheet package, a presentation package, a database package. Then there are the extras. Math will deal with the creation of formula text for the documents, and then Draw to add the basic graphics creation package for signs and other vector graphics needs of a business. The average office worker, or student, does not need to do photo and bitmap editing. If they do, they need some very specific, and maybe high end, needs that take a lot of manpower to develop and text to get it working right. To be honest, one thing I hate about Microsoft's and Adobe's mindset is the fact that they want to have their packages do EVERYTHING they can think of. That is not a good way to make a good working, and non bloated package. The figures I have seen over the years is that 90% of the things that MS office can do is used by less that 3 to 5 percent of its users. I knew people that had been working with Word since Word 95 and they were the expert in that business for Word. I borrowed a Word reference and started to read off things that Word does and this expert never heard of these things and could not figure out why you would want to do something like that in a word processor package. In the software industry, companies try to meet all your needs, but end up not doing a good job. LibreOffice is not like that. If you want an office suite package, LibreOffice does it well. If you want a photo and bitmap editing package, that should not be a part of an office suite, and LO did not include one. If you want an email and calendar client to replace Outlook [another bloated package] there are open source clients out there that has years of development that LO could never match with its limited manpower. I do not think LO should go the route of MS and Adobe and make their software so bloated it takes 1 to 2 GB of drive space just to install it, and then not use most of what those companies thought we need, when 90% or more did not need it. LO seems to have become the best office suite out there in the free and/or open source market. One day it will be a true 100% replacement to MSO for most business users. In my opinion, it fills the needs for at least 80% of business users. But it will not get there if it offered a bloated package that included photos editing, email and calendar clients, a web browser, and full HTML editing client. There are some good to great free and/or open source out there that covers all not non-office-suite package needs. TDF/LO took the office suite market away from Oracle/OOo when dropped the ball in that market. But TDF will not go and make the mistake of some other companies and try to create a package that includes everything a computer user might want to do on their machine. That is one of MSO's mistakes, so let them spend the money and manpower dealing with that mistake. Let TDF/LO deal with the needs of the average office suite user. It makes a better product that way. -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Re: [libreoffice-users] drawing
Hi :) There is official documentation for LibreOffice here http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications#LibreOffice_Draw_Guide Inkscape is more specialist vector graphics package http://inkscape.org/ It sounds like you really need Gimp http://www.gimp.org/ Someone said something about a replacement for MS OutLook http://projects.gnome.org/evolution/ Evolution is good but it might be better to use a separate email client such as Thunderbird or something tiny, light-weight and fast such as Claws or something packed with features such as The Bat (not OpenSource but still quite amazing) and then an appropriate calendar depending on whether you need it just to quickly look-up the date or as a project-management tool for a major project or somewhere in the middle. You can crop the image to the section, but that will be rectangle. Make sure you have set the correct scale for the image. Select the cropped image. Then use File Export. Mark 'Selection' and choose the desired format, likely png or jpg, and save the section as new image. Afterwards you can insert the new image. Cropping itself does not really cut the parts of the picture, but only hides them. Another way for several sections is this: Insert the image several times (which will result in 1 image stored) and crop each of it to the desired section. If you want a not-rectangle section, there exists a complicate way to use a combined drawing object, to hide the not needed parts. But I recommend to use an application specialized for bitmaps. But if there is a problem, it is a good idea to examine the configuration at Tools Options Java. The box for “Use a Java runtime environment” should be checked. The section below that shows the installed Java runtime environments (JRE) that were detected, along with radio buttons to select the JRE to use. The Help button provides documentation on this and the other Java configuration options in LibO. I think the above syntax was developed for Lotus 123 in the early 80's(?) and everyone else implemented the rules/syntax to be compatible with Lotus. By the mid 80's this syntax was standard for all spreadsheets. The only real change from Lotus is that (using 1) is in Lotus formulas were enter +SUM(A1:A10) while the IMHO the more logical =SUM(A1:A10) was introduced later by the mid 80's. Mark Stanton One small step for mankind... Hello Mark, Yes, it would be useful to have more import options that actually work when importing a pseudo-database (mostly spreadsheet lists) into a true database or into HSQLDB at least: [X] Use first column as column name [X] Create primary key [Name Box] [ ] Create primary key as auto-ID And another exclusive option: [o] Use existing column list box as auto-ID [ ] Use existing column(s) multi-select list box as primary key When importing from a true database into another true database, these options should be preset according to the situation in the source table but still modifyable. Sometimes you want to import with no constraints at all. My above statement ... never creates any auto-ID fields. is not entirely correct. At least a copypaste between 2 HSQLDBs creates the integer PK as auto-ID. It creates an exact copy of the table. Some level of detection seems to be implemented already. Copying from HSQLDB to H2 (a similar Java DB) does creates an integer PK but not as an auto-ID field. I think it can be very hard to implement for all types of connectable database engines. There are UNO interfaces to detect the capabilities and idiosyncrasies of some database driver. May be this can be utilized, may be not.
