Re: [libreoffice-users] Reply settings on this list have changed

2012-08-14 Thread Andrew Brager
The questions on your poll are rather leading. The items you have
selected as questions are really not the issue at all.

This list is still a list, what else could it be? You're using it right
now as you're complaining about it. So clearly, it's not private
communication at all. You simply have to make a conscious decision as
to whom you wish to reply to. Yes, you must _think_ about it for a
second or two until you get used to the new way. (And you know what?
You did it! Otherwise I wouldn't be seeing your message right now. Was
it really that hard?)

webmaster-Kracked_P_P stated exactly that. To wit: /I am so use to
pressing Reply and the next button being Reply All, that I now have
to remember to skip the Reply button and remember that the Reply All
button has been replaced with Reply List./

Seriously? We're complaining about remembering to move the mouse a hair
to the right? And it's become a major issue among the users here? I
think there's more discussion about this then there is voter turnout
(apologies to the non-voting countries).

What you're really saying is you don't want to change your habits.
That, I can understand; old habits die hard. However, with a little
effort and a little practice the new way will soon grow on you and
you'll eventually forget what it was you were so upset about.

Now I don't know what email client you're using and perhaps it's a
hassle for you in some other way. Is that the case? I'm using
Thunderbird and so I simply hit Reply List instead of Reply. Not a
big deal. It takes an extra nanosecond to make the conscious decision
to hit one button instead of another. Do you have to do more work than
that?

Back in my day, we had to hike 10 miles uphill in the snow to press a
different button and we were happy to do it ;-)

   * Libreoffice is perfect for use within university's / schools as it

   * The use of Zotero could replace the inbuilt Bibliography

[libreoffice-users] Tooltip background is half transparent

2012-08-14 Thread linuxissue
I have a problem about tooltip in LibreOffice - its background is half black
and half transparent with white words on it:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=65488 Screenshot . It makes
me difficult to see the description.

I have already filed this bug on Bugzilla as

think this problem is very rare as I can't find other users having my
problem. So, I suspect this is my problem instead of LibreOffice's problem.

Have anyone had any idea how to solve this problem? I will be very happy if
someone can answer me.

Here is my information:

My offer stands valid, let's wait for some more feedback and some more
days, and then make a final decision.

My feedback is that I don't like the change at all.
Most of the mailing lists I subscribe to nowadays (~50 lists) are on Yahoo
or Google, and none of them behaves like this, with no Reply-To field.
They all have the standard Reply-To list field.
And so do the few non-Yahoo/Google lists. LO is now the only exception,
and I actually out of old habit replied to your post as I always do to
lists (and emails), before I noticed that I was writing to your email
instead of to the list.

Please switch back!

Why not 'Reply to List' (I use the keyboard shortcut, CTRL-SHIFT-L)?

Thunderbird added this a long time ago...

That said, I agree that discussion lists (like this one) that are *not*
discussing what would be considered 'private' issues - ie, like an email

(reply to the list address)...

Anything else just greatly reduces the effectiveness of the list.

[libreoffice-users] MSO 2013 article - MSO will read/write ODF1.2 and change formatting of .docx files again

2012-08-14 Thread webmaster-Kracked_P_P

This article may be interesting to read by some of this lists users. It
seems that MSO 2013 will read/write ODF 1.2 formats and their older
OOXML formats will not be changed to Strict Open XML formats [so .docx
will change format again]. Also Excel will be using OpenFormula, it
claims. It will also be able to read/edit/save PDF files.

ODF support is great, same with OpenFormula. Yet, they seem to want to
change the internal formatting stuff within .docx files. MSO 2010 was
different than MSO 2007, and now MSO 2013 will be even more different
that either of the older two. So it looks like someone will need to
work on the MSO filters again.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Reply settings on this list have changed

2012-08-14 Thread webmaster-Kracked_P_P

3 desktops, 2 laptops, 1 tablet - currently out of storage cabinets and
setup to run whenever I need it to. More in storage.

1 Blu-ray Player with Internet content apps.

3 network printers [bw duplexing, color laser, USB
printer/copier/scanner/fax], 1 USB printer [printer/scanner/copier],
plus one USB printer in storage [just a printer]. each printer bought
for specific uses.

running 2 wireless routers, sometimes 3, [one for my network and one for
an isolated shared network for my neighbors [those I give the pass-code
to] to get access to the Internet. The secured shared network cannot
access any part of my private one's data or printers.

After 3 strokes and a debilitating back injury, I no longer work. My
life is based on pain and stress management. So I read [or listen to
books], watch TV, do some work on fixing friends' computers, deal with
these lists, and help out several local not-for-profit groups and
associations.

I have setup specific computers to do specific functions.

My Dell laptop came with Vista, but I also use it as a test bed for the
newest Ubuntu versions. I still use Ubuntu 10.04 on my default desktop
[typing on it now], but I use the laptop to see how the newest versions
of Ubuntu are working. I found out that for Ubuntu 12.04, I prefer
using MATE desktop environment over any other d.e. available for 12.04.
I found out that 12.04/MATE will allow the Epson Artisan 810
printer/scanner/copier/fax to work with XSane, while 10.04 cannot get
the printer and XSane scanner software to work together.

I have a Ubuntu 10.04 desktop - Dell Optiplex - attached to my flat
screen TV to access streaming content that my Blu-ray player cannot
access or cannot do it easily. My older HP laptop has a better wifi
antenna so it can pick up hot-spots - or my private network - from a
greater distance, and more bars, than my Dell laptop.

My living room is filled with computers, printers, books, DVDs and audio
discs, paper supply drawers, plus a bit of this and that, besides a nice
comfy chair and my TV and blu-ray systems. Also I have my walker and
wheelchair in their places to fill the rest of the room. The only thing
in the bedroom that is electronic is the CRT-TV and DVD/VCR player.

is in the LibreO - Users Global folder and the website list uses LibreO

I have been using Thunderbird for many years. The only problem I have is
I cannot save the message filters. When I have a system crash [when using
Windows] and had to reinstall Windows, I had no ability to reload the
message filters as I can with the saved emails and address-book. When I
went from Windows to Ubuntu for my default system, I had to rebuild the
Message Filtering that had several years of growth that I had to rebuild
from scratch.

-- off topic ---

I currently read my emails from only one computer - my Ubuntu 10.04
desktop. If I need to deal with emails on a different computer, I use my
domain/email hosting system's web-mail system. Since I use the Ubuntu
desktop, a Dell laptop running Ubuntu 12.04/MATE and Vista, HP laptop
running XP/pro, an Android tablet, a Ubuntu 10.04 desktop attached to my
HD-TV set for the types of Internet audio/video that my Blu-ray player
cannot do, and a few more desktops running Ubuntu or XP that are spares or
will be given to others who need them and cannot afford to buy one
themselves.

With this mix of system being used for various tasks, I would have a mess
if I tried to read emails on more than one system, even if I could get a
sync system to work properly between the various Windows and Ubuntu systems.

I currently use a 1 TB and a 2 TB USB external hard drive[s] for backing
up my main Ubuntu desktop [it has the two drives - 1 TB and 2 TB -
installed]. Then I can use these external drives to play AVI and MPG/MP4
files on my TV via the Blu-ray player or listen to audio books with the
ability to deal with the volume and play/pause controls of the Blu-ray
player and not having to get up out of my comfy chair to do so with my
computer. The down side of this is the USB drives must be Windows
formatted and it takes a long time to defrag/optimize the 2 TB drive. With
324 GB free space on that drive, it has been over 26 hours running the
Auslogics Disk Defrag

Not writing ODF 1.1 is a good thing, given how badly it was implemented

See zotero.org
You will find a few videos
It is what you might think of as a bibliographic tool. I recommend it to all my

less prone to spatting and more cohesive, and that would be my only heartburn

would appear to be either that the product is SO buggy we have

that we are going to ignore all bug reports Thank you, Florian, for
the vote of confidence.

If I had the time I would go through and re-open every one of these

 Dear bug submitter!
Due to the fact, that there are a lot of NEEDINFO bugs with no answer within
the last six months, we close all of these bugs.

Thanks for understanding and hopefully updating your bug, so that everything
 is
prepared for developers to fix your problem.

Today I got 16 such mails.

LibreOffice is out of control. Everybody is free to fix things that are
not broken. Like the supporters on this list, the QA testers do not
know the software, let alone any new features added without
specification nor investigation on side effects. Some of the QA people
are not even able to run a macro to check out an issue.

I'm going to upgrade all our production systems to AOO 3.4.1 which works
as expected with all the features I need.

Hello Marc,

I feel the same as you. some of these bugs are not closed because they
need info but because we need developers. We can't do much about that,
but we should not behave like this to our polite bug reporters. This is
not a serious way to embrace community members.

I can understand that the developers and QA team needs a better overview

better communication or something else could help, but not this
approach, please.

It seems that MSO 2013 will read/write ODF 1.2 formats and their
older OOXML formats will not be changed to Strict Open XML formats
[so .docx will change format again]. Also Excel will be using
OpenFormula, it claims. It will also be able to read/edit/save PDF
files.

Not writing ODF 1.1 is a good thing, given how badly it was
implemented in MS Office. Also, I understand that Strict Open XML
means getting rid of the proprietary stuff that made it difficult for
other office suites to implement.

Yes not saving to 1.1 will be good in the long run for people who wish
to get businesses to use ODF instead of MSO's XML formats.

Still, the move to make their XML formats use Strict Open XML will make
MSO 2013 not readable with MSO 2007 and 2010 package, or as least I have
read before. Hopefully it does remove the undocumented proprietary
stuff from within their XML formats so it would be easier to create
the needed filters to read/write MSO 2013's XML files. We still need to
keep 2010 and 2007 XML file filters updated for those users.

OpenFormula may make it easier to use Excel '13 files with Calc. Calc
does support OpenFormula, right?

Actually I did not know that MSO 2010 saved files as PDF, but the
article states that 2007 and 2010 both do. Still I would keep a PDF
print driver to be able to create PDFs from the non-office documents
[neither MSO or LO documents]. CUPS-PDF for Linux [on Ubuntu for me]
and the free doPDF software-printer for Windows [on XP and Vista for
me] work fine for that.

Yes there has been a mistake - all mails has been send four times.

The guy made a mistake and he apologized for that and I'm pretty sure he
won't do that mistake next time. Mistakes happen no matter what project you
are working with - open source or commercial. Thats not the point.

The point is that these bugs has been closed just because nobody picked
them up. Thats not fair and it will be de-motivating if this procedure is
accepted. If the project don't care about me spending time reporting a
bug, then I don't care about filling a bug report next time.

2012-08-14 Thread Marc Grober
Leif,

First, I may be inconsequential, but I did not see any apology.
Perhaps it only went out on the dev list.
Second, I am not concerned about receiving multiple iterations of the
bug closing, but as you suggest, by the closing of a bug simply because
it was too much trouble to address.
Third, the bug in question in my case was not only clearly identified,
but a solution proposed months ago.
Fourth, the bug was reclassified in March because the bug tracker was
redone, requiring me to reconfirm
Fifth, then a few weeks later (end of March 2012) I was asked again to
reconfirm and I did.

While I agree that whining here is not the answer, I am at a loss as to
what else we can do other than to identify the bug, identify the code
needed, and identify the source of the needed code.

I understand that my little issue is NOT a show stopper, but I am
horrified just thinking about what other bugs were simply marked
resolved that may be the result of even more effort than we put in on
the little item I was involved with.

I have had my little rant, for what it is worth, and I hope that there
are some devs on this list that may take the message to heart, and that
is that.

Apologies to all.

Removing (or renaming) the directory extensions in your LibreOffice

...

Odd. I have: Version 3.6.0.4 (Build ID: 932b512) (linux .deb) and it
certainly still happens on all of my installations.

@Don: if that bug bothers you, you'll really enjoy these related bugs:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46073
[ Page Layout Guides (margins, headers, footers) No Longer Visible]
Not to worry... with 3.6 just go to Tools|Options|LibreOffice
Writer|Formatting Aids: and untick everything ticked under 'Display
of'... Now go back and turn on: View|Nonprinting Characters and you have
layout guides again!

Of course your blue header/footer line feature will still be available,
but you'll no longer be able to view:
- Paragraph end
- Custom hyphens
- Spaces
- Non-breaking spaces
- Tabs
- Breaks
- Hidden text
- Fields: Hidden text
- Fields: Hidden paragraphs
But hey, you'll be able to see page guides again (including column
guides). Cool huh?
My bug report was marked as a dupe of 46073 (twice actually). However I
think attachments are worth a look.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46518
[ UI: Header, footer and page break indicators in multipage view]

Have you looked at the Artha Thesaurus/Dictionary? It's free, runs on
Linux, does not invoke Bing or any other junk like that. Try it.

Thanks, but that really doesn't replace the embedded thesaurus that
used to be in LO. If I have to go external, I usually use
thesaurus.com.

[libreoffice-users] What happened to LO 3.6's place memory?

2012-08-14 Thread MR ZenWiz
I just noticed also that when I close a document, then reopen it, LO
3.6 no longer remembers where I was. This was a really nice feature
that has been in LO at least since 3.0, but now it appears to be gone.

Can we have it back? Soon?

Thanks.

MR
