Hi :)
Probably best to start by renaming your User Profile
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/UserProfile

That tends to be the best and fastest fix for anything weird, especially things
that suddenly started behaving weirdly for no readily apparent reason and which
did work properly previously.  Also does sometimes fix odd things in fresh new
installs.

In the old days or with older style programs you would get back to factory
defaults by doing a complete reinstall but that is not the case with
OpenSource software and some proprietary software seems to be learning the
trick too now.  So, nowadays when you do a reinstall programs tend to pick-up
on your old settings and keeps your galleries, templates, Extensions and all
the rest intact.  To get back to factory defaults you just rename the folder
that all those settings and configurations are in.  That is the User Profile.

By renaming instead of deleting you keep all your old stuff but have just
effectively hidden it so that LO is forced to generate a new one.  Later you
can copypaste chunks from your old profile into your new one to regain some of
your old stuff.  If weirdnesses have occured then the most likely cause is
apparently 3rd party Extensions so you can probably get almost all your old
stuff back.

[libreoffice-users] [Writer/Draw] How to insert fields into graphic?

2012-12-04 Thread gordom

Hallo everyone.
I'm preparing a software manual with dozens of print screens. Each of
them consist of several additional rectangle frames. These frames are
placed to mark out some regions of the print screens (windows elements,
menus, etc.). Frames are numbered and these numbers refer to certain
parts of text. So far I was inserting them manually but it becomes quite
difficult to control them. Is there any way to do so more less
automatically? Is it possible to insert fields with numbers into
graphics and have them linked to text? Thank you very much in advance
for all your help.

Kind regards,

gordom

Thank you very much for your advice. Unfortunately I'm facing some
problem with captions. I don't want to have any text shown except
numbers. Therefore I choose no category. Problem is that automatic
numbering doesn't work in this circumstances. I tried leaving this field
blank (putting a space there) but it didn't work neither.

My goal is to get something like that:

   __printscreen__
  | |
  |  || 1 |
  |  ||   |
  | _ |
  || ||
  || | 2  |
  ||_||
  | |
  | __ |

Any clues? Kind regards,

[libreoffice-users] Re: Pdf import. Was: Fw: Wiki quick guide page - see if this is a good format. . .

2012-12-04 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
It is usually best to start a new question by starting a new email thread
rather than replying to an existing thread and then just editing it.
Forwarding an email and then copypasting the address back in also
works but just Reply to .. and then editing the subject-line doesn't.

OpenOffice Extensions still tend to work on LibreOffice just as easily as they
do
on OpenOffice and vice-versa.  However i thought PDF import had been
pulled into the main branch of LO?  Can you just open the Pdf in LO?

Although a lot of programs can now write Pdfs they seldom allow you to edit the
text as freely as you would edit an Odt or Doc.  They do sometimes allow you to
crop and rotate pages and do some fairly rough work like that.
Depending on which Operating System you are using and what type of
editing you want to do people might have suggestions for other
OpenSource programs that might suit you better.  I used to use Gimp a
lot but it wouldn't let me write back as a Pdf (a double plus for my
needs at that time).  When i need to save back as Pdf i use Draw or
nowadays PdfShuffler (on a GnuLinux).  So, are you using Windows and do you
need to save as Pdf or will an image format do?
Also do you need to edit the text part of the document?

When i create Pdfs i keep an original in Odt so that i can go back to that
if i really need to edit anything.  I've found other people are usually
quite willing to give me an editable format (usually Doc or DocX) if
they have started by only providing a Pdf.  Not always but quite often.

It's a very good start.

I would ask listers to e-mail you privately on this topic because I
think this conversation may be getting lost for some people who might
be willing to help even if it's just contributing solutions.

Speaking of Libre Writer...

Do you know if there is any Libre extension
 which allows one to import
a PDF into Libre Writer?

There is one for Open Office but when I perused the official LIbre Web
site I did not find a download for an extension or plug-in that would
allow that.

Maybe I missed it?

Thanks so much for all your help.

It would be nice to fill in the items with descriptions on what
 checking/unchecking those boxes do.

The image was from my Ubuntu system, but I wonder if I should do all my
screen-clip images from a Windows computer.  Do you think I should
reference the image by saying what version and OS the clip was from?
I will be redoing them for the 3.6.x version, if they appear different.

 ALSO
when uploading a image, where is the file name compared with?
It is specific for that Wiki page or the entire Wiki system?  I do not
want to have to keep changing the file name for the screen-clips.

Also, I know that the Wiki page can hold more information than the space

would have, but I do want to
consider how it might be presented on such a guide sheet[s].

Tom asked about how I did the table-of-contents.  I answered him but I
think I missed his question.  If he meant the use of the box with the
dot border, that was done by placing some spaced before each line.  If
you add a spacing between lines [not with the new line character],
then each block of lines would have their own bordered box.

Now, I have to figure out how the informational text for each check
box items will be shown as part of that sub section of the page and
not a new item to be looked at. I replaced the * character, after I
used the bullet list option for the text, with the ? [box character
shown here, hopefully] That way the text was still properly indented for
the page.  I wonder if I can
indent at another level - i.e. indent a
 text inside an indented text.

 But this is a start.

What would be the best format for the Supported Document file formats
and is there a better name for that section?  Should I list all of the
formats in alpha order and then have a column for load/save information
 - maybe in a table format?  Or should it be listed in some other order.

I was thinking that I would work on that part of the page, at

Probably best to start by renaming your User Profile

That tends to be the best and fastest fix for anything weird, especially
things that suddenly started behaving weirdly for no readily apparent
reason and which did work properly previously.  Also does sometimes fix odd
 things in fresh new installs.

In the old days or with older style programs you would get back to
factory defaults by doing a complete reinstall but that is not the case
with OpenSource software and some proprietary software seems to be learning
the trick too now.  So, nowadays when you do a reinstall programs tend to
pick-up on your old settings and keeps your galleries, templates,
Extensions and all the rest intact.  To get back to factory defaults you
just rename the folder that all those settings and configurations are in.
 That is the User Profile.

By renaming instead of deleting you keep all your old stuff but have just
effectively hidden it so that LO is forced to generate a new one.  Later
you can copypaste chunks from your old profile into your new one to regain
some of your old stuff.  If weirdnesses have occurred then the most likely
cause is apparently 3rd party Extensions so you can probably get almost all
 your old stuff back.

Re: [libreoffice-users] [Writer/Draw] How to insert fields into graphic?

2012-12-04 Thread Regina Henschel

Hi Gordom,

gordom schrieb:

Thank you very much for your advice. Unfortunately I'm facing some
problem with captions. I don't want to have any text shown except
numbers. Therefore I choose no category. Problem is that automatic
numbering doesn't work in this circumstances. I tried leaving this field
blank (putting a space there) but it didn't work neither.

Do not use the Caption wizard, but set the field manually.

My goal is to get something like that:

__printscreen__
   | |
   |  || 1 |
   |  ||   |
   | _ |
   || ||
   || | 2  |
   ||_||
   | |
   | __ |
   | | | |
   | | | 3 |
   | |__| |
   | |
   |___|

Any clues?

If your pictures are inside a frame, you can only use a Number Range,
if you will reference them later on using the number. Another kind of
reference will not work. When you do not use the Caption-feature, then
you insert a Number Range by Insert Fields Other... Tab
Variables. Choose Number Range left, and Illustration in the
middle. Insert. Close.

To insert the reference in you text use Insert Fields Other... Tab
Cross References. There you find Illustration left, and in the
middle the number you want to refer to. Choose Numbering from the
bottom list.

For arranging your pictures you can use several methods, for example
- Anchor as character and aligning by using tabstops.
- Anchoring to paragraph and wrap setting after and first paragraph,
use the spacing in the wrap settings in dialog page Wrap and the
position from the dialog page Type.

- Using a invisible layout table which gives you a grid for arranging.

Kind regards
Regina

Hi :)
Once you get to the Roaming folder it should be pretty easy to figure out.
Most OpenSource programs will have their UserProfiles in there, just pick the
one that is relevant = in this case the LibreOffice one.  From then on there is
only about 1 folder in each folder until you get to the right place.

'syn'+'chronos' as in 'synchronize'.

sometimes the spelling of words, like the syntax of directory paths,

it's a utility for transferring files, especially backing them up. so
I do a frequent backup of certain directories I have on a server to my
home computer. rsync is fast and will only make copies of stuff that's
not already at the destination (if you set it to work that way).

I think the 'r' stands for 'remote' but I don't know; the source
doesn't need to be 'remote' though. I just backed up one older
external drive I have (was making funny noises) to another newer one.

'sink'; one is germanic, the other is greek.

'syn'+'chronos' as in 'synchronize'.

sometimes the spelling of words, like the syntax of directory paths,
matters.

(and 'syntax' has nothing to do with 'sin' or 'taxes'!)

'rsync' is a great utility; I assume it's available for Windows but I
don't know but there's certainly equivalent stuff.

Although a lot of programs can now write Pdfs they seldom allow you to edit the
text as freely as you would edit an Odt or Doc. They do sometimes allow you to crop and rotate pages and do some fairly rough work like that.

In the last 6 months or so, I had the task of completing two PDF forms
that organizations sent me to fill out. I decided to try the LO PDF
import and use LO to fill out the forms. In both cases, PDF import
created a Draw file of pages conforming to each page of the PDF file.
With the first PDF form, I was not able to modify any text or objects in
the form. It was if the original format was a picture. However, I was
able to add text boxes over the picture and get the form filled out.
With the second PDF form, I was not only able to add text boxes as
before, but I was also able to edit the original form text! What was
different between the two PDFs? I haven't a clue.
So, it looks like PDF file editability in LO Draw depends on the
particular PDF you are trying to edit.

some pdfs are nothing really but image files with some other code
'identifying' them as 'pdf'.

I notice one cannot see one's own posts; is it possible to switch
this on?

it's a utility for transferring files, especially backing them up. so I do
a frequent backup of certain directories I have on a server to my home
computer. rsync is fast and will only make copies of stuff that's not
already at the destination (if you set it to work that way).

I think the 'r' stands for 'remote' but I don't know; the source doesn't
need to be 'remote' though. I just backed up one older external drive I
have (was making funny noises) to another newer one.

Your problem is not with the LibreOffice list, but with your mail
provider Gmail - which has a bug^H^H^H feature which suppresses
copies distributed to you of your own messages to the list.

Google says:
When you send mail to any group or mailing list you subscribe to,
Gmail automatically skips your inbox and archives the message to
save you time and prevent clutter. The message will appear in your
inbox if someone responds to it or if there is an error delivering
the message. If you'd like to view your message, you can find it in
Sent Mail or All Mail.

It can be argued that this practice is unhelpful.

I trust this helps.
