You're right, of course. We started talking about keys, but then
somewhere the word 'button' started getting used to refer to keys.
However Tom's reference to the 'Edit File' button to toggle between
'read only' and 'edit' was correct usage--though it may have put
'button' rather than 'key' into our heads.

Hi Alex,
Thanks for your offer! I use a 32bit architecture on Mint-Nadia. Yes, I will
gladly try out the connector you built for Maya. Please send it to
hc.stoellin...@aon.at.
I have of course used both JDBC- and ODBC-based connectors in the past. But
if I can, I avoid both of them, partly for the reason that installation
(of the ODBC-version in particular) is more work, but also because I have
found them to be buggier. I also assume that they use more resources.
Altogether I feel that a well-performing, stable connector to the widely
used relational DB-systems is a MUST for any serious application where
data structure is non-trivial and where a sizeable amount of data has to
be dealt with. So - if AOOffice can produce something which works cross-OS
then we should try to get something working also in LO.

Please, please, pretty please, sometimes I really do get the impression
you have not read anything we have exchanged in the past on this topic.

On Unix/Linux, and for LibreOffice, the native connector is dependent on :

- the OS version ;
- the bit architecture ;
- the version of libmysqlclient ;
- the version of libmysqlcppconn ;
- the version of LO.

This means that if I build a mysql connector on say PCBSD 9.1, it will
not work on Ubuntu, Suse, Redhat or Debian. Even if I build a 32bit
version of the connector on a Suse 32bit OS, the functionality on
another version of that same OS is not guaranteed if the versions of
libmysqlclient or libmysqlcppconn are different between the two
versions, notwithstanding the fact that it will not work at all on a
64bit Suse OS (different architectures).

So, the situation today is that for each Linux/Unix OS, and each major
version of that OS, the connector has to be built separately.

In addition to these niceties, the build of the connector regularly gets
screwed by devs changing things for one OS (mostly Linux), without
giving a *expletive* about the other OSes. This is currently the case at
least for Mac OSX, thanks to recent changes in the gbuild process for
mysqlc and mysqlcppconn. As I don't build on Windows (and do not intend
to), I really don't know what the situation is there currently.

The situation over at ApacheOO is different. There, the connector is
built by another volunteer, using the SDK, i.e. in theory, it produces
an OS version agnostic mysql connector. However, the differences in code
trees between LO and AOO now mean that the connector for AOO no longer
works in LO4, or at least, that is what Heinrich has reported (and
Robert too, I believe).

Ok, so that confirms that it is Linux OS bit and version dependent,
probably because the versions of the mysql libraries have changed too.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: MySQL-Connector

2013-02-16 Thread Heinrich Stoellinger

Looks like it, Alex! As I said before, I don't really want to use the Java
version, it
never worked well for me either on Linux OR on Windows. Also, isn't there a kind
of strategy to diminish the dependence on Java in LO? If so, this would be yet
another reason to avoid JDBC. ODBC on the other hand requires more effort to set
it up, especially on a variation of system platforms...
So, it seems to me that the way to go MUST be a native connector. Do you know
whether
MariaDB is doing anything in this direction?

H

Ok, so that confirms that it is Linux OS bit and version dependent,
probably because the versions of the mysql libraries have changed too.

   Regards from
   Tom :)

  Please, please, pretty please, sometimes I really do get the impression
  you have not read anything we have exchanged in the past on this topic.

  On Unix/Linux, and for LibreOffice, the native connector is dependent
 on :

  - the OS version ;
  - the bit architecture ;
  - the version of libmysqlclient ;
  - the version of libmysqlcppconn ;

 You are using Base to connect to a spreadsheet. Because of that,
you can only add, modify, nor remove data within the spreadsheet. So, if
you want to add more tables, add more sheets that each has the data for
a new table. Then save the spreadsheet, close and then reopen Base. The
new tables should show up in the database. And as you have discovered,
you will want to name each new sheet with the name you want for the table.

 I've done this several times.

Thanks Dan,

Now how do I create non-linked tables inside the same DB?

How do I link to another external spreadsheet using the same DB?

Can I link to only one spreadsheet at a time?

I have data in four different spreadsheets that I need to consolidate
into one large report. The data in those spreadsheets changes every
week. I don't want to have to copy and paste the data from those four
spreadsheets onto the appropriate tab of linked spreadsheet every week.

From your email I gather that all tables must be tabs on the one
spreadsheet that is linked. Is that a true statement? Seems pretty
inconvenient.

 More information: My laptop is 192.168.2.101 and the MySQL server
is on 192.168.2.100. The database I want to access is Budget.
 I entered Budget as the database name, Server as 192.168.2.100,
port is 3306. I then test the connection, enter the user name and
password. The error message I get is Host '192.168.2.101' is not

 I am using the MySQL JDBC driver, and when I click the Test
Class button, I get the message The JDBC Driver was loaded

 Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong?

--Dan

Sounds like the server is not configured to allow you access. Since the
IP addresses for the server and your computer are on the same LAN, I can
assume the MySQL server is on another computer on the same LAN. You
don't say if you did this in mysql:

   GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO username@hostname IDENTIFIED BY
`password` WITH GRANT OPTION;

Note that the hostname should be the IP address of your laptop, or
192.168.2.101 . Note that the IP address may need around it due to
the periods and numbers.
If not, the server will not allow you access. The laptop is not
registered as a trusted computer. You must have done this for your
other computer, but you need to do it for all computers you need access
for. Or, if you are brave, you can use % for any host:
username@%. Or, better yet, you can limit access to your LAN:
username@192.168.2.%

For further information, this can be found in the MySQL reference manual
under Access Control, Stage 1: Connection Verification.

Hope this helps.
Girvin Herr
