 Hi :)
So it meant that instead of discovering a bug with LibreOffice it was
a discovered problem with the 3rd party's website and their strange
way of setting up their downloads.

The question was whether reporting a bug against LibreOffice might
improve LibreOffice's handling of Xls files but the answer to that is
just "No" and that solves the problem.

Hi Tim,

Since you use Fedora Linux, maybe you can try gnumeric as a temporary
alternative.

Hope it helps and regards,

Tim:

I finally had enough free time(very rare(short leash)), with access to
Excel '03, to work with the file. I started by opening it in Excel and
truncating rows of data. I would then try to open this truncated file
with Calc (latest portable version). I started with large chunks (about
1k row). Once Calc would open the file (4k rows removed), I started
splitting the difference between 3k and 4k rows removed. I kept getting
the Data I/O failure until I had removed 3617rows from the end. I then
repeated the process by removing rows of data from the beginning of the
file. Again the file would open in Calc with 3618 rows removed from the
beginning of the file. In another block of free time, I removed rows
from the middle of the filewith similar results.

Items of note:

The original file used 7200 rows in Excel.

I neverremoved any rows from the Column labels on up.

The pass/fail for opening the file in Calc was unstable when near the
3617row removal.

When cancelling the Data I/O error message, it would take nearly the
same amount of time for the message to clearas it did to appear.

The original file structure had 191k lines. Row/cell tags were quite
often on their own line from the data.

Once opened in Excel and saved the file structure was automatically
changed to Excel Spreadsheet XML format. This seemed to have no effect
on Calc's ability to open the files.

When Calc was able to open the file, two empty rows above the column
labels were missing that were there when opened in Excel.

I did not have enough time to try truncating data using a text editor on
the original file.

It was not a matter of preferences. It was because calc could not
 open a
.XLS file. On further investigation it was found that it is not an XLS
 file hence the problem

[libreoffice-users] comments above the split line

2013-03-28 Thread John R. Sowden
When I have split a calc document to lock the titles, etc, I have a
problem inserting/editing comments for a cell if the comment text area
is above the split line. LO only accepts about 4 characters, then
ignores further entry, I have to put the mouse cursor in the comment
area and click on it to be able to continue to enter text.

Help,

John

Hi :)
Yes, i agree.  Not handling a weird sort of Xls is not necessarily a bug.
Native formats might be more of an issue.  Since it's an ultra-weird format
and not even an Xls it's definitely not an LO bug.

Btw many apols for being rude earlier.  I'm a bit of a pillock sometimes.
Sorry chap.

[libreoffice-users] Re: booklet printing problem

2013-03-28 Thread Marc Paré

Hi Jeff,

Le 28/03/13 07:21 AM, Jeff Shrowder a écrit :

Thank you for your suggestions. I've had no success.
What is the LibreOffice profile and what is its function?

I haven't found a way to change the margins when printing a booklet in
acroread. The default margins are bigger than I want.

At the rate I am going I might remove 4.0.1.2 and revert to 3.5 - but
that would be to admit defeat :-)

Cheers,

Jeff

Note: the LibreOffice profile holds your name, address, email etc and
all of the other settings that you will find in Tools->Options. It will
also store extra stuff like the extensions, clipart (that you may have
added) ... In short all that you have done to LibreOffice to customize
it for your own use.

=

It sounds like you are on a linux box. Try this:

* close ALL instances of LibreOffice
* open you main file browser -- KDE would be Dolphin
* make all of the files visible in your Home directory
* go to .config
* you will see the file folder libreoffice
* rename the folder to libreofficeOLD
* go back and start LibreOffice again, your configuration will be reset
as if this is the first time you open LibreOffice
* try your file again to see if this makes a difference. If so you may
consider keeping this configuration

NOTE
* IF there is no difference in how LibreOffice prints your handbook
* IF you liked the previous LibreOffice configuration
* close ALL instances of LibreOffice
* go back to .config
* delete the new file folder libreoffice
* rename your old configuration file libreofficeOLD to libreoffice
* this will return you to your original configuration with all of your
settings etc.

Also,

Would you consider sending your file to one of us to see? Maybe it is a
question that could be submitted as a bug.

Thanks for your patience with this.

Cheers,

Marc

Hmmm. Gives me the idea to install LO 3.5.2 (Win) in Wine on my Linux machine.

Nah, not serious really 8-) But I did have such a setup several years ago. Can't
remember why, but my recollection is that it worked/played OK.

Hi Jeff,

Another problem I have with LO (ver. 4.0.1.2) is that when I try to
print a booklet - let's say a 4 page A5 booklet - on A4 it prints pages
1 and 4 in landscape across the portrait-oriented A4 page rather than
along it. Pages 2 and 3 are similarly affected.

The settings I use are the same as for LO 3.5. The layout image in the
Print dialogue box is the same as in 3.5 so, everything being equal, I
should get the right result. But I don't.

"Same setting" does not help us, because we do not know your setting.Booklet
printing
works for me, so perhaps I describe my way and you can compare it to
your way.

Precondition: You document is written in A5. Your printer can duplex printing.
1. In normal view use LO print dialog via File > Print.
2. Click on printer properties to get the dialog of your printer driver. Set
your
printer to use DIN A4 paper. In finishing set the orientation to landscape, and
enable duplex printing on printer. OK.
3. In LO print dialog click on tab 'Page Layout' and there on option 'brochure'.
4. OK to print

If your printer cannot duplex printing you need to turn the sheets manually. The
printer manual should have a guide for that. For me it would be in addition to
the
settings above:
Step 1: Set 'front page' in drop down 'Includes' on the tab 'Page Layout'.
Print.
Step 2: Put the sheets back into the tray.
Step 3: Set 'back page' in drop down 'Includes' on the tab 'Page Layout' and
mark 'In
reverse page order' on tab 'General'. Print.

Thank you for trying to help me solve this problem.
My printer cannot do duplex. I have for many years (with OO and more recently LO)
successfully used the print method you describe above. I use it with my recently
installed LO 4.0.1.2 and have this terrible problem.

I just gave it a test and it seems to work as well — better in some
ways, not as well in others. (The document from which I wanted to copy
styles had special paragraph, character, and page styles and I really
didn't want to have to go through manually creating them again.)

Thanks to all for the help.

Re: [libreoffice-users] --convert-to always fails silently on Ubuntu

2013-03-28 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
There is not much point in fixing a problem when you don't know what the
problem is or where it is if there is one.  That's a bit like "pin the tail on
the donkey" but without anyone looking to see how close you got.  What if, as
it turned out, that the file/folder permissions were not the issue?  You can
chown all you want but now you don't know whether the problem has been solved
or not.

One trouble-shooting technique is to try su or sudo and if it had no effect
then you can rule out a whole bunch of stuff.  As has happened in this case.

As Graham says, what would be really nice is to find a log-file or generate
one.  Almost all commands have a "verbose" tag that does the job.  How can we
get more info about what is going wrong?

Tom :)

When I want to copy styles from one Writer document to another I
have a few steps that I do after opening the document whose styles I
want to change:

1) Open the Styles and Formatting window (F11).
2) Click the "New Style from Selection" and click "Load Styles"
3) Check all of the checkboxes: Text through Overwrite.
4) Click "From File".
5) Browse to the file and select it.
6) Click the Open button.

I have been doing this since OOo2.0 or perhaps before. Today it
worked for LO 4.0.1.2. Just now it worked for 4.02.2 as well.

 Has anyone else tried this?

Brilliant!

I figured it was in the Organise Templates, but I did not know one
could double-click on 'Styles' to get to individual styles (only knew
the first double-click to get to 'Styles' of the document). Doing it
with 'Styles and Formatting' window open (F11) and set to show
'Applied Styles' made it easy to know which styles to copy.

I've bookmarked your page for future reference.

Many thanks.

[libreoffice-users] Re: --convert-to always fails silently on Ubuntu

2013-03-28 Thread Graham Glass
The folder is owned by the same user that is executing the command, so I
don't think that's an issue. It would be ideal if there was a way to find
out what the actual permissions error is. Is there a log file or a verbose
option to get this information? Trying lots of things without knowing the
details of the issue is quite inefficient.

Hi Tim,

Since you use Fedora Linux, maybe you can try gnumeric as a temporary
alternative.

Hope it helps and regards,

Yes, there is. Go to the File-->Templates-->Organize. Open the document
you want to copy from in one window, and then the document/Template you
want to copy to in the other, and click and drag. I explain it with

Re: [libreoffice-users] --convert-to always fails silently on Ubuntu

2013-03-28 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think you should NOT be using trying to run as SuperUser by su or sudo or
anything.  It should work without that but i agree it was a good idea to give
it a go to see what happens.

Can you try adding the tag

-v

or

--verbose

to see if it gives you more output to explain what is going wrong?  Perhaps
something like

/opt/libreoffice4.0/program/soffice --headless -v --convert-to pdf sample.ppt

I'm not sure if position matters but i think it doesn't.  If it does then i've
probably put it in the wrong place.  You can find out more about the tags that
can be used in Gnu&Linux by just using the tag

-h

or

--help

Btw the double - and full word seems to be the newer way but not everyone has
caught up yet so sometimes programs still need the shorter tag or are happy
with either.  Its getting less messy like that now but it takes time for an
evolution like that to ripple outwards.  Machines in remote places might be
worth holding back from radical upgrades just in case something does go wrong.
No-one wants to go for a long hike in space just to plug a keyboard in and sit
doing coding work.
Regards from
Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] --convert-to always fails silently on Ubuntu

2013-03-28 Thread Kieran Peckett
How would that make a difference? Isn't that what he means when he
said it wouldn't work as SU? - either that or he ran "sudo su" before
running the command, so I doubt that that is th problem.

Re: [libreoffice-users] booklet printing problem

2013-03-28 Thread John King

along it. Pages 2 and 3 are similarly affected.

The settings I use are the same as for LO 3.5. The layout image in the
Print dialogue box is the same as in 3.5 so, everything being equal, I
should get the right result. But I don't.

"Same setting" does not help us, because we do not know your setting.
Booklet printing works for me, so perhaps I describe my way and you
can compare it to your way.

Precondition: You document is written in A5. Your printer can duplex
printing.

That's interesting. I've always prepared my documents in A4 (since some
of my collaborators want an A4 rather than a A5 booklet) and then
printed in brochure format, which gives me 2 A5 on a landscape A4.

1. In normal view use LO print dialog via File > Print.
2. Click on printer properties to get the dialog of your printer
driver. Set your printer to use DIN A4 paper. In finishing set the
orientation to landscape, and enable duplex printing on printer. OK.
There's also a setting in my printer properties to choose short-edge' or
'long-edge' binding for duplex. Short edge works for me.

3. In LO print dialog click on tab 'Page Layout' and there on option
'brochure'.

4. OK to print

If your printer cannot duplex printing you need to turn the sheets
manually. The printer manual should have a guide for that. For me it
would be in addition to the settings above:
Step 1: Set 'front page' in drop down 'Includes' on the tab 'Page
Layout'. Print.

Step 2: Put the sheets back into the tray.
Step 3: Set 'back page' in drop down 'Includes' on the tab 'Page
Layout' and mark 'In reverse page order' on tab 'General'. Print.

Kind regards
Regina

Other than the above A4 difference, this has worked in LO 3.6 and LO 4

John

I tried to print a series of test pages (8 pages in length) and then

I tried to replicate this again, but I could not do it. I tried

but again, could not reproduce it.

One explanation could be that the LibreOffice profile may have
something to do with
this (maybe erasing it or forcing a new one by re-labelling your
profile with another

name). I am not sure.

BTW ... I installed the v.4.0.2.1 build of LibreOffice as I am also
testing it for
bugs. This is the version I test tried my file. I am not sure if this
would correct

the problem.

Marc,

Thank you for your suggestions. I've had no success.
What is the LibreOffice profile and what is its function?

I haven't found a way to change the margins when printing a booklet in
acroread. The default margins are bigger than I want.

At the rate I am going I might remove 4.0.1.2 and revert to 3.5 - but
that would be to admit defeat :-)

Cheers,

Jeff

The Margins issue might be part of the "page scale" option - i.e.
"shrink to page size" and "fit to page size" type of options. I have
the same problem with brochures if I do not turn that option off.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: booklet printing problem

2013-03-28 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Perhaps a compromise?
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_in_parallel

Have both! :)  Then when the 3.5.6 comes out you will be ready to test-drive it
straight away! :)  The 4.0.2 comes out soon too so it might be possible to find
an alpha-test version if you help with QA for a bit which might also be a good
way of getting something done about your problem more quickly.

Congrats and thanks for posting the answer back into the thread.

I think that is a fairly perfect way to deal with a problem;
2.  post a question
3.  start looking into documentation and searches more deeply
4. race against everyone else on the list to get your answer up there first.

Thanks, congrats and regards from
