[libreoffice-users] diff of 2 docx files

2014-02-04 Thread berenger . morel

Hello.

Is it possible to have a diff between 2 .docx files in libreoffice? Or
with any other tool, I do not really mind...
I am not fond of office suites, but at my work they sent me an outdated
document describing what I have to do, and when I asked about some
details ( or errors, in fact ) in it, they sent me a different ( but
still with errors... ) version of the same document.
With a simple text file, I could have made a diff ( lot of tools for
that ) but I have no idea about how to do it with docx files. I have
obviously tried to unzip them, and use diff and meld on resulting files,
but those files are so messy, that I thought that, maybe, they are
encrypted of whatever!
Now that I think about it, I could do a diff of files made through a
copy/paste of the text... but that would be quite dirty.

Thanks for any suggestions.

PS: I did not registered to this list, so please add me in CC.

If you write the files out as .fodt (Flat XML) files from within LO, you
will have straight XML files to compare.

Beyond that, you could get the tika-app.jar from the Apache Tika
project, which will let you extract plain text from the .fodt files and
directly from the .odt files.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Removing Index Markers from Writer: a How-To

Hi Frank,

This script works on OS X, to the extent that does the conversions and
creates new filtered odt files. The only questions are whether it works
in Linux, and whether the filter does the right thing with the index
markers.

I haven't created any files with such index-markers, so maybe you can
run it against your files to see how it goes.

http://pbw.id.au/src/sh/strip-odt-index-markers

It's a shell script, using soffice and perl.

BUT: my sed command only removed the markers from the fodt. As I mentioned I
was unable to convert the odt to an fodt (essentially uncompressing the odt
to readable xml) using the unzip capability of my OS (as I'm pretty sure
could be done with earlier open office documents).

Since LO can easily write and read fodt files, though, it really wasn't
necessary to do any file format conversion, and I didn't bother spending the
time to figure out how to do everything in one shot.

This might be connected with the fact that the print menu does not
display a thumbnail of the current page you are on, in the print
dialog [4.1.4 Ubuntu]. This is not the case with other packages, and I
do not remember if this was the case with the 4.0.6 version.

So if the thumbnail in the print dialog defaults to page 1 and not the
current page, that may be connected to which page is bookmarked in the
system to go back to when done with printing.

You use to be able to, for Ubuntu, choose from two print dialog menus,
standard and LO. I had to choose LO's dialog to fix some duplex
printing issues for an earlier version. Now you only had a choice
whether or not you want to use the standard or the LO dialogs for the
load/save options. That printing dialog choice was on Ubuntu, but not
Windows.

Hopefully, this bug will be fixed in the later 4.1.x versions and the
print menu display would show the current page with the 4.2.x line.
That would be ideal for me. I am waiting for a later version of 4.2.x
before I upgrade to it from the 4.1.x line. I went from 4.0.6 to 4.1.4
and jumped over the earlier 4.1.x versions. This is my habit to wait
with the current line's .4 to .7 till the new line gets to .4 or .5,
most time that is.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Removing Index Markers from Writer: a How-To

2014-02-04 Thread CVAlkan
Peter:

The actual perl command should be changed slightly to:
perl -pi'orig_*' -e 's/text:alphabetical-index-mark
text:string-value=[[:alpha:]]*\///g' Index_Experiment.fodt

After [[:alpha:]]* the \/ needs to be added to remove the / ending of
the XML tag - otherwise it seems to work fine.

The full blown shell script you sent me (I don't see it here on the forum
for some reason) needs to be modified in the same way of course.

I used [A-Za-z] instead of the [:alpha:] that you used because some systems
don't respect that substitution syntax (I can't remember what it's called),
which limits things just a bit, but a comment might be added to take care of
that - the [:alpha:] syntax, again, is probably a little easier to
understand for those not familiar with grep, sed and their relatives.

You should post the shell script, as it is probably easier to use (?) for
some folks than my simple sed command, since it takes care of hand-holding,
locating the right directories and so forth.

Of course, I hope some of the LibreOffice developers will incorporate the
option and capability to remove old markers when an index is regenerated,
and fix the generator so that it doesn't add additional markers to the
same word when updating takes place. (It doesn't always do that, but I
haven't figured out the exact conditions when it does).

So - good work.

Every now and then ossers (open source people) get a bee in their bonnet
about something. Top-posting is one of those somethings. The most popular
email clients default to top-posting. There's a reason for that. On a
list, if you are interested in a particular topic, you will have been
following along as it developed, generally pretty quickly. You know what
the context is, and you just want to see what the latest contributor is
saying. If you need to check the context, you scroll down. So top-posting
satisfies the vast majority of use cases, and bottom-posting is a pain in
 the vast majority. Easy.

The majority of humans on this planet have never seen a computer.

Stephan (and others),

Thanks again for your reply. With your help here and from the bug
report referenced earlier I have been able to successfully create an
.oxt that will set our preferred settings. As it is a shared
extension it sits between the system settings (which are overridden on
new version upgrade) and the user settings. So, a user can still
override these settings should they wish.

Sorry, my DevGuide URL was wrong, it should be
 https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/DevGuide/Extensions/Extensions.

Unfortunately this seems offline today, as it is just displaying an
empty page. I got it from Google Cache, however, and with your other
example links was able to put something together. I would hope that
somehow http://extensions.libreoffice.org would link to a how to make
extensions for beginners guide, which could be the AOO docs for now as
a minimum.

 For an example configuration-only extension,
 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=69609#c3 has a link to
 http://www.linuxtag.org/2012/fileadmin/www.linuxtag.org/slides/Thorsten%20Behrens%20-%20LibreOffice%20configuration%20management%20-%20Tools_%20approaches%20and%20best%20practices.p331.pdf
which in turn has a link to
 http://users.freedesktop.org/~thorsten/extensions/config_only_sample.oxt.

For anyone interested, here then is my first stab at creating an
extension which will set our required system wide defaults. It is
installed with unopkg add --shared ssg-defaults.oxt

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0WVXg1DL6duNkE2WUFZWGFETEE

For first timers (this was me until yesterday), the .oxt source can be
viewed the same as a .zip archive (can even change the extension to .zip
if you like: they are interchangeable but you want it as an .oxt in the
finished form)

For some of the settings, they aren't correctly seen by the user until
after we remove the user's pre-existing registrymodifications.xcu
(even if we didn't intentionally have any of those values overridden).
It is my guess that is because there are some of the keys listed in the
default generated registrymodifications.xcu that conflict -- if it was
generated BEFORE the installation of this newly created extension.

Thanks again,

iveand

[Btw, your reply mail looked really garbled, see above. Could it be
you're using a mail client that only produces poorly formatted plaintext
 alongside an HTML alternative?]

I noticed that too, so thanks for the warning: I think it is the
thunderbird always html extension, which I have now disabled.
Unfortunate bug it seems in thunderbird which will revert things to text
only email even if they were intended as html otherwise. Another
discussion for another list, however! So, we'll see how this one turns
out, and if people can follow it clearly or not.

It looks like a bug is already filed:
  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60415
I've just signed up for an account on the bug tracker, so will add more
info to that report when I can get in. In the meantime...

I can confirm this in LibreOffice Writer 4.0.4.2, copying from Mozilla
SeaMonkey 2.23, on Windows Vista. Copying static images from a couple of
other websites was no problem, so it seems to be partly to do with the
way Google Images search works.

Copying from other websites into Writer, I first see a placeholder which
is then replaced with the image. The time it takes to show the image
increased with image size, so looks like LibreOffice gets a link to the
image, then downloads it itself. However, the URL copied from Google
isn't a link to an image on a web server (it begins data: rather than
http:) - I guess the image data is obtained via JavaScript or JSON or
something in the web browser, but that link won't then work for another
application. Not good that it crashes LibreOffice Writer though!

I'm not sure about Linux, but on Windows a copy operation can put data
on the clipboard in several formats, and the paste operation can then
use any one of those (usually a default, with paste special giving the
user a choice). Copying an image from the web browser appears to place
data on the clipboard in HTML and bitmap formats, where the HTML
includes a link to the image as well as alt text etc.

It looks like Writer uses the HTML by default and attempts to download
the image data itself, while Draw and Impress use the image data from
the clipboard. Presumably Writer does something useful with the other
HTML attributes which Draw and Impress don't, but looks like it needs to
handle data: links more gracefully.

As you've found, a workaround is to use Paste Special Bitmap (this
tells writer to use the bitmap data from the clipboard rather than the
HTML) - but that doesn't exactly help when you automatically hit default
Paste and Writer hangs!

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Writer printing problem

2014-02-04 Thread null

Hello,
LibreOffice 4.1.4 is considered a stable version of LibreOffice.
4.1 has been around for a while, and 4.1.4 is the most recent minor
update. LibreOffice 4.2 is considered a fresh version. It was
recently released, and the first version of its kind. Believe it or
not, there is also LibreOffce 4.3 alpha, a version in development.
There is a possibility that the bug has been fixed in those builds. I
was unable to confirm the bug on Windows 8, so maybe the issue is
operating system-specific. Are you able to confirm the bug in any of
these versions?
To get LibreOffice 4.2, go to:
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/?type=win-x86lang=en-USversion=4.2.0
(You do *not* need the help pack if you don't want it. All you need is
the main installer.)
WARNING: This *will* override your current installation of LibreOffice
4.1.4!
To get LibreOffice 4.3 (development version), download the following
file by clicking the link:
http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/master/Win-x86@47-TDF/current/master~2014-01-30_14.53.08_LibreOfficeDev_4.3.0.0.alpha0_Win_x86.msi
http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/master/Win-x86@47-TDF/current/master%7E2014-01-30_14.53.08_LibreOfficeDev_4.3.0.0.alpha0_Win_x86.msi
Because it is a development build, this *will not* override your current
installation. It will install as LibreOfficeDev.

Simply double a downloaded file to open the installer.

I hope this helps!

I see that happening in 4.1.4 [Ubuntu 64-bit], since I checked. I was on
page 4 of a 40+ page document. I had to type in page 4 for the page to
print [no print current page command]. That page printed and then the

I do not remember this happening with 4.0.6. I went from that to 4.1.4.

YES, that is a major problem for people editing specific pages of a
large document and having to go back to the page they are working on
from page one. It would bother me big time.

It would be nice to see print current page as an option, like the
other packages do - say like the PDF file viewers do on Ubuntu. I have
not checked this out on Windows though since Ubuntu and Windows options
can be a little different.

'Are you saying you are on page 5 and you print page 5, but then LO moves
you to viewing page 1?'
Yes, that is exactly the case.

'Which version of LO are you using? 4.1.4? 4.2.0?'

I am using version 4.1.4.2. I am not aware of a version 4.2.0.
Perhaps that is a version for other than Windows O.S.?

But I am glad that somebody confirms this problem in Writer.
On the LO forum of the LO site: no response

Hello,
For some reason, on my Windows PC, the libreoffice command is not
present. So, if you choose to use the command terminal, and
libreoffice is not recognized, the following command should work:

soffice --convert-to fodt path\to\file.docx
path\to\file.docx would be the path to the docx file. The path may use
/ instead of \ depending on the operating system.
The command libreoffice might work for you, though. I guess it
depends on the installation, operating system, PATH variable
configuration, or some other factor.

[libreoffice-users] Importing HTML in LO 4.2

2014-02-04 Thread Keith Bates

Has anyone experienced this new problem (or is it a feature?) in 4.2?

In previous versions of LO, opening an html file would give you the file
as would be seen on a web browser.

In 4.2 it is the actual html code that is displayed. This behaviour
happens when opening any html document or inserting an html file into an
open LO document.

Does anyone know of a way around this?

I use moneydance to track finances, and it allows reports to be saved in
html. Producing printed reports used to be a matter of simply opening
the Income and Expenses report in LO, inserting the Account Balances at
the end of the report, then edit titles, styles etc at will.

I have discovered that I can open the html files in Firefox, then copy
and paste into LO, but that does seem unnecessarily complicated, when it
used to just work in a single step.

In LibreOffice 4.2, there is an option under the View menu in

D'uh!

Thanks Frank. I've updated the script with that change.

Attachments aren't accepted by this list, are they? What did you mean by
post the shell script?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Importing HTML in LO 4.2

2014-02-04 Thread Keith Bates

Hi,

No, I made sure that the HTML source item was not selected. I've tried
a few different files generated by different sources. Generally they
behave as I described, although I did find one that opened correctly. I
have no idea what the difference is between those that work and those
that don't.

Opening them from a blank html document makes no difference. In fact the
title bar just says LO Writer not Writer/Web.

If I start with a blank html document and use Insert-File it shows up as
the source.

I'm using the linux version of LO. Are you using Windows or Linux?

In 4.2 it is the actual html code that is displayed. This behaviour
happens when opening any html document or inserting an html file into
an open LO document.

Does anyone know of a way around this?

I use moneydance to track finances, and it allows reports to be saved
in html. Producing printed reports used to be a matter of simply
opening the Income and Expenses report in LO, inserting the Account
Balances at the end of the report, then edit titles, styles etc at will.

I have discovered that I can open the html files in Firefox, then
copy and paste into LO, but that does seem unnecessarily complicated,
when it used to just work in a single step.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Writer printing problem

2014-02-04 Thread Owen Genat
Joe Alders wrote
After a very disappointing experience using the LibreOffice Forum at the
'ask' part of the LibreOffice site, I will try this forum for help.

This is the related AskLO thread:
http://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/28581/document-in-writer-always-jumps-to-first-page-after-printing-command/

I sympathise with your plight Joe, but it is incredibly difficult to
troubleshoot printing problems as there is a lot more than just LO involved.
It is important when asking questions on AskLO to provide as much detail as
possible i.e., for a printing-related issue, the printer make/model, the
driver being used, whether the printer is local or on a network (and if
network, the protocol), the printer language (PDF or PostScript), and so on.
This helps others attempt to reproduce / narrow down the issue.

I can't reproduce the issue here under Debian v7.3.0 x86_64 using v4.1.4.2
Build ID: 0a0440ccc0227ad9829de5f46be37cfb6edcf72 when printing to a HP
LaserJet 4050TN via CUPS v1.5.3 (IPP connection) using Printer Language Type
of either PDF or PostScript (from driver). There are reports in this thread
of it working as expected for MacOS+LOv4204, WinXPSP3+LOv4142, and in the
AskLO thread for Win7x64+LOv4152, but nothing exactly matching your setup of
Win7x64+LOv4142 (and no printer details are offered by anyone). The report
in this thread of a similar issue for Ubuntu+LOv4142 does not indicate the
source of LO, but it is possibly PPA, so difficult to reconcile with
behaviour of website-sourced copies.

Best wishes, Owen.

I've produced a document that doesn't work with LO. It is at

Strangely it does open in Abiword.

Earlier documents produced by moneydance as recently as last month open
fine in LO. I have not upgraded moneydance in that time.

Having quickly opened about 20 html's the problem is limited to those
produced lately by moneydance.

I haven't had time to look closely at the html source. I suppose it's
possible that LO is now being more strict in its interpretation.

The work around in the short term might be to use Abiword.

This might prove a useful starting point:

https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74t=28765start=0

Why are people still sending others to the OpenOffice.org web site for
information about LibreOffice?

For this posted need, I remember hearing about deployment of LO on a
LO web page. Although LO was a fork of OOo from several years ago, it
is grown past those roots now. If we do not have the needed
documentation now, we should really make it a priority to set up a web
site/page to talk about IT management deployment of LO, including
network based.

The current AOO/OOo web site should not be the place where people go to
get information about LO. From a marketing aspect, this could lead
business users to think we are not the package to use, but AOO is. That
is wrong way of doing business.

SO, just from the marketing aspect to businesses, this needs to be
resolved. From the typical user, this could be an issue as well.

I stopped using OOo when LO came out. I do not want to have to explain
to users that LO's documentation site[s] is not the place to find the
needed information to migrate/deploy LO to their systems.

Would you tell the UK tech advisors to not consider LO for the open
source option to using the mandated ODF file format requirements, but to
go with AOO/OOo since we do not have the needed documentation? We would
be saying this if we tell them to go to the OOo web site for the
deployment information.

I see too many of these postings telling users to go to the OOo site[s]
for the needed information or extension/template download. Yes, there
may be something there that LO currently does not have, but it should
not be the first option. LO needs to rely on LO's sites to give the
user the help and support they need.

I do not use Nabble, but I would think that there must be a forum there
about business migration and deployment. IF not, then there should be.

Am I alone in this opinion?

Googled for a solution.
Found an interesting thread.
Thought it could be useful to the OP.
Posted it.

I don't get what all this whining is about.

Is there LO-specific information around, or some tutorial that doesn't
involve OO? Fine, somebody is goind to come up with it (you didn't, by
the way. Just sayin')
As an example, V Stuart Foote provided a more general solution to the OP
problem in this same thread.
